8 Users with hearing aids should note that when using the handset radio signals may interfere with the hearing aid and, if strong enough , may cause an unpleasant humming sound. Installing the base station Your phone has been produced for use under normal conditions.
9 Connecting the phone To start up your phone you must first plug in the phone connecting cord and the power cord. Only use the SNG 11 ea power pack with your base station! ➀ Phone connecting cord Your phone is delivered with different connecting cords.
10 Functions with elmeg/funkwerk PABX systems Note the following when connecting your DECT80 to an elmeg/funkwerk PABX system: • Check whether “Automatic access to exchange line" or “Manual access to exchange line” is pro- grammed in the PABX system.
SMS with PABX-systems Your DECT80 is connected to a PABX system. Sending of SMS messages is possible from any handset. Sending and receiving SMS-messages Sending and receiving of SMS messages is only .
12 Starting up the handset Your handset is not operational until the batteries have charged completely for the first time. Only then can calls be accepted, or calls placed with this handset. Installing the batteries The battery compartment for accommodating two AAA batteries (microcells) is located on the bottom of the handset.
13 Charging the batteries The batteries have not been charged when you first unpack the unit. Place the handset in the base station to charge the batteries. The animated charging icon on the handset indicates that charging is in progress. Full charging of the batteries takes about 14 hours.
14 When the battery status reaches the lower limit, the battery icon begins flashing ( ) in the display and a low battery acoustic signal is issued (if acoustic signals are activated). You then have about 10 minutes talking time remaining. Register handset The handset provided with the unit has already been registered at the base station.
15 Display indicators, keys, icons Display indicators The display provides you with information about the current status of your phone and prompts you through the use of your unit. Significance of display icons: This icon lights up permanently when there is a connection with the base station.

17 Keys on the Handset Softkeys, left and right, whose functions are shown in the display. Info: direct access to "Info" menu (Calls log, SMS, extra VIP phone book with 10 phone numbers that you can freely program. Hands-free calling key, activates/deactivates the phone speaker (key lights up/goes out).
18 Number keys for manually entering phone numbers and names. 0 key: Holding this key creates a pause in dialing. Rhombus key for entering the “Number” character. Holding this key when the phone is idle activates/deactivates the key guard function.
19 The Main Menu When you press the Menu softkey, the main menu is displayed. The display shows the menu as dif- ferent icons. The following menu items can be selected: SMS Info Display Sound Settings The corresponding name is shown on the top line of display (e.
20 Switching KeyGuard on/off Activate the KeyGuard if you carry your handset in a handbag. This prevents any number from being dialed inadvertently. When you receive a call the keys will be released for the duration of that call. Switching KeyGuard on Hold the rhombus key down for about 2 seconds.
21 Paging: Search for a “misplaced” handset If you have misplaced your handset(s) you can call it(them) from the base station. All handsets regis- tered at the base station and within the coverage radius will ring for 60 seconds. Paging call (group call) from the base station: Press the Paging key at the base station.
22 Making Calls Calling internal and external numbers You can log up to five handsets in to your base station; these can then be called using internal phone numbers. Dialing an internal extension number Press Int and use the navigation key to move to and select the internal party you wish to call.
23 Accepting a call Calls are signaled acoustically at the handset and at the base station. They are also shown in the handset display. • The caller’s number is shown in the display when this performance feature is available at your connection. • The number is not displayed when the party is anonymous, i.
24 Setting the handset volume / speaker volume You can adjust the handset and speaker volume (when hands-free calling is activated) during an ongoing call in five stages.
25 Redialing The last 20 previously dialed numbers (max. 24 characters) are stored in the Redial list. Every num- ber that is dialed after that overwrites the oldest entry in the list. You can check, edit and delete phone numbers. Dialing from the Redial list Press the Call key (this loads the Redial list).
26 Deleting the redial list Press the Call key (this loads the Redial list). Press Options , select and then press OK to confirm. Press OK once again to confirm the confirmation prompt. Telephone directory You can save frequently dialed phone numbers, along with the name for the numbers.
27 Enter the new number and press OK to confirm. Enter the desired name and press Save to confirm. You can also store the functions for the * and # keys. You can enter a break in dialing by holding the “0” key down. This is shown as a P in the display.
28 Changing telephone directory entries Press the navigation key . The first entry will be shown. Select entry. Press Options , select and then press OK . Edit the entry as appropriate and the press Save . Deleting telephone directory entries Press the navigation key .
29 The VIP Memory Use the colored keys under the display to move to a special phone book – the VIP memory. You can save ten (10) entries in this list. Creating a new entry in the VIP memory Press the VIP key, select and then press OK . Press Options , select and then press OK .
30 “Info“ menu General New messages are identified in the display by means of text or icons: •S M S • Calls log . When you receive several new messages of different types, "New messages" with the corresponding icons then appears in the display.
31 Caller List If the CLIP feature (Caller ID) is available at your connection, the callers’ phone numbers will be saved to the Calls Log. The Calls log contains a maximum of 20 entries. When the Calls log is full and further calls are made, the oldest entry will be deleted and the new entry put at the front of the list.
32 Displaying details Open the calls log and select the desired entry. Press Options , select and press OK . You are shown the date and the time of the call. Importing an entry into the telephone book Open the calls log and select the desired entry. Press Options , select and press OK .
33 SMS-Service (text messages) SMS service is qualified in this form for use in Germany – consult your network provider about using this service in other countries. Your DECT80 is an SMS-compatible phone that can receive, save and send SMS text messages.
34 Consult your service provider for further details: • about the costs charged for sending and, in some cases for receiving SMS messages • about the mobile service providers you can use to send and receive SMS messages • about the functions offered by your SMS Service Center.
35 Send SMS The as-delivered default setting for SMS Center 1 is the SMS Center of Deutsche Telekom (number: 0193010). This means that you can send SMS messages directly (without any further preparation).
36 Entering and editing SMS Center numbers You can edit the SMS Center numbers. Before changing the set number inquire about any special features and the services offered by the new SMS service provider. Press Menu , select SMS and press OK . Select and press OK .
37 SMS alarm You can set whether a signal tone is to notify you of a new incoming SMS message. Press Menu , select SMS and press OK . Select and press OK .
38 You can send and receive SMS messages as soon as you receive an SMS confirming your registration. Log-out If you want to cancel your registration at the SMS Center, send the command ABMELD as an SMS to the toll-free number 8888 (for SMS Center of Deutsche Telekom).
39 Writing, sending an storing SMS-messages An SMS message may not be longer than 612 characters. SMS messages are saved automatically only if there is an interruption when sending! If you have drafted an important SMS and wish to save it, you must do this before sending it (see instructions on this page).
40 SMS messages that can not be sent, because, for example, the connection was interrupted during transmitting, are flagged with an error status and saved to Outgoing (see page 43). Note that some service providers charge a fee for setting up a connection to the SMS Center.
41 Inbox All SMS messages that are received are saved to the Inbox (SMS Inbox). Reading new SMS messages New incoming SMS messages are signaled in the display. The date and time (from the SMS Center) are indicated for each new SMS. SMS messages are sort- ed by their arrival time.
42 Press Options , select the menu item and press OK . I After responding to the question of whether you wish to use the received text for writing or not, you are switched to the Write mode. The number of the party sending the SMS is accepted automatically and can then be edited where required.
43 Outgoing All SMS messages are displayed in Outgoing - that you have specifically stored ( ), - that have been saved automatically because a problem occurred while they were being sent. These messages are flagged with Error . SMS messages that have been sent successfully are deleted.
44 Using the Navigation key you can return to the sender data. You can then scroll to other SMS messages, or leave the menu using the navigation key . Press Options , select the menu item and press OK . I Use this option to send selected SMS messages.
45 Error when sending or receiving an SMS Failed SMS SMS messages can not be sent or received if the SMS Center number is not available, or an incor- rect number has been saved. The SMS Center number is given in your Calls log; be sure to delete this number.
46 SMS with PABX-systems SMS messages with ISDN PABX systems Your DECT80 is linked to an ISDN PABX system. Sending of SMS messages is possible from any handset.
47 Conducting calls with several subscribers This phone offers you the option of calling a second party during an ongoing call (Inquiry call), of talk- ing alternately with two parties (Broker’s call), or of talking to the two parties at the same time (Con- ference call), all without having to have two phone connections.
48 Instead of manually entering the number for the second external party, you can also use a number stored in the phone book, from the redial list, or from the Calls log.
49 Forwarding an external call to an internal party You have taken an external call and wish to transfer it. H You are conducting an external call. Forwarding to a further handset registered at the same base station: Press Int and use the navigation key to move to and select the internal party you wish to call.
50 Conducting two calls at once while switching between the calls (broker's call). During an ongoing external call you have accepted a second external call, or have called a further party (see page 47). You can now switch back and forth between two external callers.
51 Talking with two parties simultaneously (three-party conference call) Initiating a three-party conference call H You are conducting an external call, with a second external call "on hold" Press Conf (erence call); you are then in a three-party conference call.
52 Safety Inherent security The base station and your handset are linked via a radio channel when you make calls,with the base station acting as the switchboard between the phone system and your handset.
53 System-PIN The PIN is a four-digit “secret” number used for protecting the system and the handsets against unauthorized access. You must enter the system PIN to make system settings at the base station. Change PIN The factory default system PIN is “0000”.
54 Telephone set-up Display language Different languages can be selected as the display language. The default setting is German (Deutsch). Press Menu , select Settings and press OK . Select and press OK . Select and press OK . The current language is marked with “ ■ “.
55 You can also activate/deactivate the ringer for the handset by holding the asterisk key down. This appears in the display when the ringer is deactivated . Setting the ringer for the base station Press Menu , select Settings and press OK . Select and press OK .
56 Select the desired storage position and press OK . Enter the number to call and press OK . Activating/Deactivating notice signals Notice signals notify you that ... -… you have pressed a key (key tone) - ... the radio connection to the base station is becoming weaker and may fade out completely (Range) - .
57 Registering/Deregistering handsets The handset delivered with your DECT80 is already registered. You can use up to 5 handsets at up to 4 different base stations.
58 Select the handset to be deleted, for example , and press OK . Press OK to confirm the confirmation prompt. The handset having that inter- nal number is then deleted.
59 Selecting a base station If your handset is registered at more than one base station you can select the base station from which you wish to use your handset. The currently active base is identified by “ ■ “. Press Menu , select Settings and press OK .
60 Setting the dialing method You can set the dialing method in accordance with your connection settings/conditions. Press Menu , select Settings and press OK . Select and press OK . Select and press OK . Select one of the menu items and press OK to confirm.
61 Enter exchange code If your base station is connected to a PABX system you may have to dial an exchange code as a prefix code for placing external calls.
62 Changing the handset name Press Menu , select Display and press OK . Select and press OK . You can then enter/edit the name (max. 15 characters). Refer to page 71 / Editor for more details. Press OK to confirm the change. Setting the contrast Press Menu , select Display and press OK .
63 Select and press OK . Select or and press OK . Setting the dim mode Illumination for the display is either de-activated or dimmed, depending on your settings, 30 seconds after you press OK. Off: The illuminated display is deactivated. Always On: Display brightness is dimmed.
64 Restoring factory default settings You can use this procedure to cancel any individual settings or changes you have made and restore the handset and the base station to their factory default settings. See the appendix for the default (as- delivered) state, page 65.
65 Appendix As-delivered state The default settings for this unit have been set for general use so that you can use the phone directly after connecting the base station and charging the handset batteries. You can change these settings later to match your personal tastes and connection conditions.

67 Notes regarding the use of batteries 1. Only use nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries with the handset! The handset standby/talk times and charging times apply only for the specified minimum battery capacity (750 mAh) (see "Technical Data", page 74).
68 Returning and recycling of batteries and cells This device contains batteries or rechargeable batteries required for proper operation of the device, or for enabling certain functions. Batteries that contain hazardous substances are marked by the symbol indicated here.
69 Troubleshooting guide If your system should not "behave" as it is supposed to, refer first to the following table to attempt to resolve the problem yourself.
70 Contact our hotline if this problem should persist. The DECT80 phone is not provided with the grounding function required for controlling older PABX systems, nor does it offer pulse dialing! Some system functions may therefore be impaired with connections to such a PABX system.
