TECRA M2 3-7 Getting Started W indows XP setup When you first turn on the power , the compu ter’ s initial screen is the Microsoft Windows XP Professional Startup Screen Logo. Follow the on-screen dir ections. T u rning off the power The power can be turned off in one of the following modes: Shut down (Boot), Hibernation or Standby mode.
TECRA M2 3-8 Getting Started ■ Y ou can r eturn to your previous working envir onment immediately when you turn on the computer . ■ Saves power by shutting down the system when the computer receives no input or hardware access for the du ration set by the System hibernate feature.
TECRA M2 3-9 Getting Started Standby mode If you have to interrupt your work, yo u can turn off the power without exiting from your softwar e. Data is maintain ed in the computer ’ s main memo ry . When you turn on the power again, you can continue workin g right where you left off.
TECRA M2 3-10 Getting Started Executing standby Y ou can enter standby mode in one of thr ee ways: 1. Click Start , click Tu r n O f f C o m p u t e r and click Stand by . 2. Close the display panel. This feat ure must be enabled. Refer to the Setup Action tab in TOSHIBA Power Saver Utility described in the Control Panel.
TECRA M2 3-11 Getting Started Restoring the preinstalled softwar e If preinstalled files are damaged, use the Product Recovery disk or the TOSHIBA T ools & Utilities CD-ROM to restore them. Restoring the complete system T o re store the operating system and a ll preinstalled softwar e, follow the steps below .

TECRA M2 4-2 Operating B asics Using the T o uch pad T o use th e T ouch pad, simply touc h and move your fingertip acr oss it in the direction you want the on-screen pointer to go. T wo buttons below the T ouch pad are used like the buttons on a mouse pointer .
TECRA M2 4-3 Operating Basi cs Replacing the cap The AccuPoint cap is an expendable item that should be replaced after prolonged use. 1. T o remove the AccuPoint cap, firmly pi nch the cap and pull it straight up. Removing the AccuPoint cap 2. Position a new cap on the peg and press it into place.
TECRA M2 4-4 Operating B asics Disconnecting 3 1/2" floppy disk drive When you have finished using the floppy disk drive, follow the procedures below to disconnect it: 1. W ait for the indicator light to go out to make sure all diskette activity has stopped.
TECRA M2 4-5 Operating Basi cs 4. Make sure the scr ew in the Slim Select Bay lock is set in the hole for the unlock position. 5. Slide the Slim Select Bay latch to the unlock position. 6. Grasp the DVD-ROM drive and slide it out. Removing the DVD-ROM drive Inserting a module Insert the Slim Select Bay HD D adaptor as described below .
TECRA M2 4-6 Operating B asics Using optical media drives The text and illustrations in this sectio n refer primarily to the DVD-RO M drive. However , operation is the same for oth er optical drive in the Slim Select Bay . The full-size drive provide s high-performance execution of CD/DVD-ROM - based programs.
TECRA M2 4-7 Operating Basi cs b. Pressing the eject button will not open the drawer when the DVD-ROM drive’ s power is off. If th e power is off, you can open the drawer by inserting a slender obje ct (about 15 mm) such as a straightened paper clip into the eject hole just to the right of th e eject button.
TECRA M2 4-8 Operating B asics 4. Press gently at the center of the CD/DVD until you feel it click into place. The CD/DVD should lie below the to p of the spindle, flush with the spindle base. 5. Push the center of the drawer to close it. Press gently until it locks into place.
TECRA M2 4-9 Operating Basi cs Removing discs T o remove the CD/DVD, follow the steps below and refer to the next figure. 1. T o pop the drawer partially open, pr ess the eject button. Gently pull the drawer out until it is fully opened. 2. The CD/DVD extends slightly over the sides of the drawer s o you can hold it.
TECRA M2 4-10 Operating B asics W riting CDs on CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive Depending on the type of drive installed, you may be able to write CDs. The CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive lets you write as well as re ad CD-ROMs. Observe the prec autions in this section to en sur e the best performance for writing CDs.

TECRA M2 4-12 Operating B asics W riting CD/DVDs on DVD±R/±RW drive (DVD Dual drive) Y ou can use the DVD±R/±RW drive to write data to either CD-R/RW or DVD-R/-RW/+R/+R W discs. The following applications for writing are supplied on CD-ROM: Drag'n Drop CD+DVD, licensed by Easy Systems Japan Ltd.

TECRA M2 4-14 Operating B asics ■ If the disc is poor in quality , dirty or damaged, writing or rewriting errors may occur . Be careful to check the di sc for dirt or damage before you use it. ■ The actual nu mber of rewrites to CD-RW , DVD-RW or DVD+RW is affected by the quality of the disc and the way it is used.

TECRA M2 4-19 Operating Basi cs Sound System Using the microphone Y our computer has a built-in microphone that can be used to recor d monaural sounds into your applications. It can also be used to issue voice commands to applications th at support such functions.
TECRA M2 4-20 Operating B asics If you want to a more ef fect for the power management, you can select another mode, the High Power Savings which can save the power than the Normal Power Savings. T o sele ct it, follow the steps below . 1. Clicked the Power Management tab.
TECRA M2 4-21 Operating Basi cs Modem This section describes how to connect and disconnect the internal modem to and from a telephone jack. Region selection T elecommunication regulations vary from one r egion to another , so you will need to make sure the internal modem’ s settings are correct for the region in which it will be u sed.

Y ou cannot use the built-in Bl uetooth functions and an op tional Bluetooth SD card 2 simultaneously .

If you used the T ask Bar to disable W-LAN, restart the compu ter or follow the procedur es below to enable the system to recognize W-LAN.
TECRA M2 4-27 Operating Basi cs LAN The computer has built-in support for Ethernet LAN (10 megabits per second, 10BASE-T), Fast Ether net LAN (100 megabits per second, 100BASE-Tx) and Gigabit Ether net LAN (1 000 megabits per second, 1000BASE-T). Some models are equi pped with a Gigabit Ethr net LAN.

TECRA M2 5-2 The Keyboar d F1 … F12 function keys The function keys (not to be confused with Fn ) are the 12 keys at the top of your keyboard. These keys functi on differ ently from other keys. F1 through F12 ar e called function keys because the y execute programmed functions when pressed.
