Read this rst Be sure to follow the important tips given her e t o get the most use and enjoyment out of your computer . F ailure t o do so might lead to discomfort or injury, or cause your computer t o fail. Protect yourself from the heat that your computer generates.
Protect your comput er and data when moving it. Before moving a comput er equipped with a hard disk drive, do one of the following, and ensure that the power button is off or is blinking: • T urn it off. • P ut it in sleep mode. This will help to prevent damage to the computer , and possible loss of data.
Conditions that requir e immediate action Products can become damaged due to misuse or neglect. Some pr oduct damage is serious enough that the product should not be used again until it has been inspected and, if necessary, repaired by an authorized servicer .

Extension cords and relat ed devices Ensure that e xtension cor ds, surge prot ectors, uninterruptible power supplies, and power strips that you use are rat ed to handle the electrical requir ements of the pr oduct. Never overload these devices. If power strips are used, the load should not e xceed the power strip input r ating.
External devices CA UTION: Do not connect or disconnect any external device cables other than USB cable while the computer power is on; otherwise, you might damage your computer . T o avoid possible damage to attached devices, wait at least ve seconds aft er the computer is shut down to disconnect e xternal devices.

Chapter 1. Pr oduct overview This chapter pr ovides information about the locations of connectors, locations of important product labels, computer featur es, specications, oper ating envir onment, and the pr einstalled Lenovo pr ograms.

Active Prot ection System ™ The Active P rotection System pr ogram prot ects your hard disk drive when the shock sensor inside your computer detects a condition that could damage the drive, such as system tilt, e xcessive vibr ation, or shock. The har d disk drive is less vulner able to damage when it is not oper ating.
Chapter 2. Using your computer This chapter provides information on using some of the computer components. This chapter contains the following topics: • “Registering your computer” on page 13 .
• T o achieve the best balance between performance and power saving, see “Managing the power plans” on page 26. Concerned about security or need t o securely dispose of data stored on your hard .
T o use your comput er in tablet mode, do the following: 1. Open the comput er display slowly, holding the upper left and right sides of the comput er display with both hands. Y our comput er is now in notebook mode . 2. Open the computer display by at least 45 degrees, pr eferably by 90 degr ees.
4. Y our computer is now in tablet mode . T o switch your computer from tablet mode t o not ebook mode, do the following: 1. Open the display by at least 45 degrees, prefer ably by 90 degr ees. 2. Rotat e the display slowly count er-clockwise until the fr ont of the display is facing the k eyboard.
• T o allow fr ee ventilation, do not place any obstacle, such as a thick-piled carpet or a soft cushion, in front of the fan. • When you use the computer in picture fr ame mode, hold the display with one hand and use the T ablet Digitizer P en.
– Display a list of recently opened pr ograms. Swipe in fr om the left edge of your scr een without lifting your nger , and then dr ag the progr am back t o the left edge. Then a list of r ecently opened pr ograms is displayed. – Close a pr ogram.
Using the tablet buttons On the display bezel near the scr een is a r ow of buttons with which you can control your comput er in tablet mode, without the use of the keyboar d. 1 Screen Rotation button : Press it to lock the screen r otation function. 2 P ower button : P ress it to turn on the comput er .
1 F unction k eys V olume and mut e k eys • F1: Mutes or unmutes the speakers. If you mute the sound and turn off your computer , the sound will r emain muted when you turn on your computer again. T o turn on the sound, press F2 or F3. • F2: Decr eases the speaker volume.
• Fn+P: Has the same function as the P ause key . • Fn+S: Has the same function as the SysRq key . • Fn+K: Has the same function as the ScrLK key . Y ou can toggle the ThinkP ad F1-F12 key functionality to use the keys in default mode or in legacy mode.
Using the T r ackP oint pointing device The T r ackP oint pointing device consists of a pointing stick 1 on the keyboar d and thr ee click buttons at the bottom of the keyboar d.
Note: If you r eplace the keyboar d, a new keyboard is shipped with the default cap. If you wish, you can keep the cap from your old keyboard and use it on the new one. Using the t ouch pad The touch pad is a pad 1 below the T r ackP oint buttons at the bott om of the keyboar d.
1. Open the Mouse P roperties window . See “Changing the Ultr aNav pointing device settings” on page 21. 2. T o disable the T r ackP oint pointing device or t ouch pad, clear the check box for Enable T r ackPoint or Enable T ouchP ad . 3. Click OK .
Charging the battery When you nd that the per centage of power remaining is low , for e xample, the battery alarm goes off, you need to char ge your battery by connecting your comput er t o ac power . The batt ery will be fully charged in about six hours.
Managing the power plans Y ou can manage your power plans t o achieve the best balance between performance and power saving. T o change the power plan, do the following: 1. Click the battery status icon in the Windows notication area. 2. Click Mor e power options .
Ethernet connections Y ou can connect t o a local network or a broadband connection by using the built-in Ethernet feature of your computer . DANGER Y our computer has an E thernet connector . T o avoid the risk of electrical shock, do not connect the telephone cable to the E thernet connector .
Attention: If you want to use your computer on an airplane, check the wir eless services with the airline before boar ding. • If you carry your computer with the wireless featur e int o an airplane, check the services with the airline before boar ding the airplane.
3. Select the display you want t o congur e. F ollow the instructions on the screen to change the display settings. Using an e xternal display If an ext ernal monit or is connect ed t o your comput er , you can switch the display of your comput er output between the computer display and the e xternal monitor .
Setting the monitor type T o set your monitor type, do the following: 1. Right-click on the deskt op, and click Screen resolution . Note: If your computer cannot det ect the e xternal monitor , click the Detect butt on. 2. Click the icon for the desired monitor .

screen clean and set the brightness to levels that enable you to see the scr een clearly . Pr ess F5 or F6 to adjust display brightness. Head position : Keep your head and neck in a comfortable and neutr al (vertical, or upright) position. Chair : Use a chair that gives you good back support and seat height adjustment.
Assistive technologies Some accessibility t echnologies are available thr ough the Accessibility Options progr am. Depending on your oper ating system, the number of accessibility options available varies. In general, accessibility options enhance the way users with hearing, vision, or mobility limitations navigate and use their computer .

2. T ype the master har d disk passwor d. Note: T o r eturn to the icon , press F1 again. If this icon is displayed, type a supervisor passwor d. Note: P ress the Backspace key if you enter a wr ong passwor d while you ar e typing your passwor d.
The master password can be set and used only by a system administr ator . Like a mast er key, it enables the administrat or to get access to any har d disk drive in a syst em.
10. P ress Fn+F10. The Setup Conrmation window opens. Select Y es to save congur ation changes and e xit. The next time you turn on your comput er , you will have to type the user or master hard disk passwor d in order to start your computer and get access to your oper ating syst em.
• The system administr ator can use the supervisor passwor d t o get access t o a comput er even if the user of that computer has set a power -on passwor d.
b. In the Conrm New Passwor d eld, r etype the passwor d and press Ent er . • T o change a password, do the following: a. In the Enter Curr ent Password eld, type the curr ent supervisor password and pr ess Enter .
T o check the BitLocker status on the Windows 8 operating system, do the following: 1. Move the cursor to the t op-right or bottom-right corner of the scr een to display the charms. Click Settings ➙ Control P anel . 2. Click System and Security ➙ BitLock er Drive Encryption .
8. Set other items that you want t o set. 9. P ress Fn+F10 to save changes and e xit. 10. P ress Enter in the Setup Conrmation window to conrm the e xit. Y our comput er might requir e a SIM car d to establish wireless WAN connections. Depending on the country of delivery, you might need t o purchase a SIM card , or a SIM card might alr eady be installed in your computer , or the SIM car d is part of the shipping contents that come with your comput er .
5. Hold the new car d with the metal contact facing downwards. Then, insert the car d rmly int o the slot until you hear a click. 6. Close the SIM card door until it snaps into position. 7. T urn the comput er over again. Connect the ac power adapt er and all cables.
• Before removing the har d disk drive or solid-stat e drive, make a backup copy of all the information on it, and then turn the computer off. • Never r emove the hard disk drive or solid-stat e drive while the computer is oper ating, in sleep mode.
5. Insert the new hard disk drive or solid-state drive into the slot and slide the hard disk drive or solid-state drive rmly into place. 6. Reinstall the har d disk drive or solid-state drive door 1 . Then tighten the scr ew 2 . 7. T urn the comput er over again.
T o r emove the keyboard, do the following: 1. Disable the built-in battery . See “Disabling the built-in battery” on page 49. 2. Close the computer display, and turn the computer over . 3. Remove the two screws that secure the keyboard at the bott om.
6. Remove the cables 2 and 4 by ipping the connectors 1 and 3 upwards. Note: Y our computer keyboar d might look differ ent fr om the illustr ation above. T o install the keyboard, do the following: 1. A ttach the cables 1 and 3 by ipping the connectors 2 and 4 downwards.
2. Insert the keyboar d. Ensur e that the front edge of the keyboard is under the fr ame. Note: Y our computer keyboar d might look differ ent fr om the illustr ation above. 3. Slide the keyboar d into place in the dir ection shown by the arrows. Note: Y our computer keyboar d might look differ ent fr om the illustr ation above.
4. Close the computer display and turn the comput er over . Reinstall the two screws at the bott om. 5. T urn the comput er over again. Connect the ac power adapt er and all cables. Replacing a Mini PCI ExpressCard for wireless LAN connection Before you start, print these instructions.
4. If a tool for r emoving connect ors is included in the package with the new card, use it t o disconnect the cables from the car d. If no such tool is included, disconnect the cables by picking up the connect ors with your ngers and gently unplugging them.

T aking care of your computer Although your computer is designed t o function r eliably in normal work envir onments, you need to use common sense in handling it. By following these important tips, you will get the most use and enjoyment out of your computer .
• Stor e your e xternal and removable hard disk drive or optical drives in the appr opriate containers or packaging when they are not being used. • Before you install any of the following devices, touch a metal table or a gr ounded metal object. This action reduces any static electricity fr om your body .
4. T o remove any crumbs or dust fr om beneath the keys, you can use a camer a blower with a brush or cool air fr om a hair dryer . Note: A void spr aying cleaner directly onto the display or the k eyboard. Cleaning your computer display T o clean the computer display, do the following: 1.

Chapter 9. T roubleshooting computer problems This chapter provides information on what t o do if you e xperience a pr oblem with your computer . This chapter contains the following topics: • “Dia.
3. While the comput er is off, remove all e xternal devices that ar e attached t o your computer (keyboar d, mouse, printer , scanner , and so on). Repeat step 2. If st ep 2 is unsuccessful, continue with step 4. Note: The following st eps involve r emoving static sensitive components from your computer .
• Message : 0189: Invalid RFID conguration information area. Solution : The EEPROM checksum is not corr ect (block # 4 and 5). Reset the block # 0 and 1, for e xample the box Serial Number , and/or block # 4 and 5, for e xample the UUID . • Message : 0190: Critical low-batt er y err or .
Solution : The main har d disk drive is not working. Have the main har d disk drive serviced. • Message : 2111: Read err or on HDD1 (Ultr abay HDD) Solution : The Ultr abay hard disk drive is not working. Have the Ultr abay hard disk drive serviced.
– The ac power adapt er is connected to the computer and the power cor d is plugged into a working electrical outlet. – The computer is turned on. (T urn the power butt on on again for conrmation.) If a power -on passwor d is set: – Pr ess any key to display the pr ompt for the power-on passwor d.
If your memory module is not oper ating pr operly, check the following items: 1. V erify that the memory module is installed and seat ed corr ectly in your computer .
– Use Category 5 wiring and ensur e that the network cable is securely connect ed. – Connect t o a 1000 BASE- T hub/switch (not 1000 BASE-X). • Problem : The Wake On LAN feature is not working. Solution : – Ensure that Wake On LAN is enabled in ThinkP ad Setup.
Solution : The Windows 8 oper ating system send PIM items in XML format, but most Bluetooth-enabled devices handle PIM items in vC ard format. If another Bluetooth-enabled device can receive a le thr ough Bluetooth, a PIM it em sent from the Windows 8 might be saved as a le with the ext ension .
Pr oblems with the display and multimedia devices This topic includes the most common problems with displays and multimedia devices, including the computer display, the external monit or , audio devices, and the optical drive. Computer screen problems • Problem : The screen is blank.
Solution : P ress and hold the power button for four seconds or more to turn off your computer; then turn it on again. • Problem : Missing, discolor ed, or bright dots appear on the scr een every time you turn on your computer . Solution : This is an intrinsic char acteristic of the TFT technology .
7. If mor e than one monitor type is displayed, select Generic PnP Monitor or Generic Non-PnP Monitor . 8. Click P roperties . If you are prompt ed for an administrat or password or conrmation, type the password or provide conrmation. 9. Click the Driver tab.
7. Set the resolution for the main display . 8. Click the Monit or-2 icon (for the ext ernal monitor). 9. Set the scr een r esolution for the secondary display . 10. Set the r elative position of each monit or by dr agging its icon. Y ou can set the monit ors in any r elative position, but the icons must touch each other .
Solution : It is normal for the sliders t o change position when certain sound applications ar e used. The applications ar e aware of the settings in the V olume Mixer window and ar e allowed to change the settings themselves. An e xample is the Windows Media Player .
• Problem : The oper ating time for a fully charged battery pack is short. Solution : Dischar ge and rechar ge the battery pack. If your battery operating time is still short, use a new battery pack. • Problem : The computer does not operat e with a fully char ged batt er y pack.
2. The battery status indicator is normally illuminated whenever the computer is on, or the ac power adapter is connect ed and the battery is char ging. This indicator may be blinking or solid in either or ange or gr een color depending on the status of the battery .
