1 � Fir st - time setu p Id entify req uired hardw are T o set up the computer for the f irst time, you will need the computer , A C adapter , po wer cord, and the primary battery . ✎ Components included with the computer may v ary by re gion and by model.

F irst-time setup Set up t he com pu ter T o set up the computer , you will 1. Insert the battery into the computer . 2. Connect the computer to external po wer . ✎ The battery begins to charge. 3. T urn on the computer . 4. Set up the software. 5. Create recov ery discs (recommended).
F irst-time setup Step 1 : Ins ert t h e bat ter y T o insert a primary battery: 1. T urn the computer upside down on a flat surf ace, with the battery bay to ward you. 2. Slide the battery 1 into the battery bay until it is seated. The battery release latch 2 automatically locks the battery into place.
F irst-time setup Step 2 : C onnec t t he comp uter to e xternal po w er ✎ Po wer cords and A C outlets v ary in appearance by re gion and country . T o connect the computer to e xternal A C po wer: 1. Plug the A C adapter into the power connector 1 on the computer .
F irst-time setup When the computer recei ves A C power , the battery begins to charge and the battery light (on the front of the computer) is turned on. When the battery is fully charged, the battery light is turned of f. Leav e the computer connected to external po wer until the battery is fully charged and the battery light is turned of f.
F irst-time setup Step 3: T urn on t he com pu ter T o open the computer: 1. Slide the display release latch 1 to the right to release the display . 2.
F irst-time setup 3. Press the po wer b utton 1 . The po wer light next to the po wer b utton and the po wer light on the front of the computer 2 are turned on, and you are prompted to begin softw are setup.
F irst-time setup Step 4: Set up the softwar e After the computer is turned on, it will go through a brief software setup. F ollow the on-screen instructions to set up the software. Note the follo wing: ■ � After you respond to the setup prompt, you must complete the entire setup process without interruption.
F irst-time setup Step 5: Create reco v ery dis cs (recommended) After setting up the computer for the first time, you can create a set of recov ery discs of your full factory image using HP Backup and Recov ery Manager .

Refer to “ Quick troubleshooting , ” next in this chapter . 2. Access additional information about the computer and W eb site links through the Help and Support Center .
T roubleshooting Qui c k troubl eshooting The computer is un ab le to star t up T o turn on the computer , press the po wer button. When the computer is turned on, the po wer light is turned on. If the computer and the po wer light are not turned on when you press the po wer button, adequate po wer may not be a v ailable to the computer .
T roubleshooting The computer sc reen is bl ank If the computer is on but the screen is blank, the computer may be in standby or hibernation, may not be set to display the image on the computer screen, or the display switch may not be functioning properly .
T roubleshooting Soft ware is functionin g abnormally If the software becomes unresponsi ve or responds abnormally: ■ � Restart the computer: ❏ � In W indo ws XP Home, select Start > T urn Off Computer > Restart . ❏ � In W indo ws XP Professional, select Start > T urn Off Computer > Restart > OK .
T roubleshooting The computer is turned on bu t not res pon di ng If the computer is turned on, but not responding to softw are or ke yboard commands, turn off the computer b y using the standard shutdo wn procedure: 1. Sa ve your work and close all open applications.
T roubleshooting The computer is unusu ally w arm It is normal for the computer to feel warm to the touch while it is in use. But if the computer feels unusually warm, it may be ov erheating because a vent is block ed. If you suspect that the computer is ov erheating, allo w the computer to cool to room temperat ure.
T roubleshooting An e xternal de vice is not w orking If an external de vice does not function as e xpected: ■ � T urn on the device as instructed in the de vice user guide. Some de vices may not be powered b y the computer , and must be turned on before the computer is turned on.
T roubleshooting The home wireless n et w ork connec tion is not w ork ing If a home wireless network connection is not working as expected: ■ � Be sure that the wireless light on the computer is on. If the light is of f, press the wire less button to turn it on.

B � Conn ec t to t h e Internet from yo u r h o m e The computer includes hardware and software that allo ws you to connect to the Internet. Before you can access the Internet, you must ■ � Choose an Internet Service Provider (ISP).

C B ac k up an d reco v er y HP Backup and Recov ery Manager provides se v eral ways to back up the system and to recov er optimal system functionality . ✎ HP installed dri vers, utilities, and applications can be copied to a CD or to a D VD using the HP Backup and Reco very Manager .
Back up and r eco v ery Back up spe cific file s or f older s Y ou can back up specific f iles or folders to the computer hard dri ve, to an optional e xternal hard dri ve, or to discs. T o back up specific f iles or folders: 1. Select Start > All Pr ograms > HP Backup & Recovery Manager > HP Backup and Recove ry Manager .
Back up and r eco ve ry Ba c k up t h e entire sy stem When you perform a complete system backup, you are saving the full factory image, including the W indows operating system, software programs, and all personal f iles and folders.
Back up and r eco v ery 7. Select the Protect data access with passw ord check box, and type your password in the Pass word box. ✎ This step is optional. If you do not want to password protect your data access, clear the Pr otect data access with password check box.
Back up and r eco ve ry T o create and schedule a system recove ry point: 1. Select Start > All Pr ograms > HP Backup & Recovery Manager > HP Backup and Recove ry Manager . The HP Backup and Recov ery Manager opens. 2. Click Expert Mode .
Back up and r eco v ery Rec o v er t h e syst em HP Backup and Recov ery Manager analyzes the hard dri ve and creates a dedicated hard dri ve rec o very partition on the hard dri v e large enough to store a cop y of the full factory image.
Back up and r eco ve ry Create reco v e r y disc s (recommend ed) After setting up the computer for the first time, you can create a set of recov ery discs of your full factory image using HP Backup and Recov ery Manager .
Back up and r eco v ery T o create a set of recov ery discs: 1. Select Start > All Pr ograms > HP Backup & Recovery Manager > HP Backup and Recove ry Manager . The HP Backup and Recov ery Manager opens. 2. Click Next . 3. Click Cr eate reco very CDs and D VDs to recov er the system (recommended) .
