4 PREP ARA TION CHOOS ING A MOUNTI NG L OCA T ION The idea l location for m ounting the amplifier is in your v ehicle’s trunk . Wherever you decide to mount it, choose a mounting location that: • .
5 Cautions: • T o prevent da m age to your ampli fier or autoso un d system, yo u must first conn ect the ground, primary , and switched p ower wires (as desc ribed in “Connec ting Ground and Primary/Switc hed Power” before you connec t the spea kers to the a mplifier .
6 Note: Af ter you comp lete the connect ions and rec onnect the bat tery wire, you will need t o reset all c lock /timer /mem o ry device s in your vehic le. 2. Connect the s upplied d ark blue/white wi re’ s end to the amplifier ’s REM (remote power) terminal.
7 CONNECTING YOUR AUTOSOUND SYSTEM Low Le vel Inpu t Conn ections You can connect your a u tosound system’s low-level phono output jacks to t he ampl ifier’s LOW INPUT phono jacks. Note: For a cl eaner, less n oisy s igna l transfe r between your aut osound sy stem and the amplifier, the amplifier’s LOW I N P UT phono jacks are gold-plated.
8 If your autosound syst em has four phono ou tputs but you are using only two speakers (front or rear) , connect only the c orresponding auto sound sys- tem’s output jacks to the amplifier using audio cables as follows: • fr o nt - l eft to FRONT L an d front-right to FRONT R , or • rear-left to REAR L and rear-ri ght to REAR R 12- 19 76 .
9 If your autosound system has o nly two phono outp ut j acks (left and right) and y ou are us ing f our speakers , first con nect the s ingle pho no pl ug en d of a Y-adapt e r shiel d ed audio cable t o each aut osound syst em ou tp ut jac k.
10 If your autosound syst em has only two phono output jacks (left an d right) and you a re using only two speak ers, simply connec t them to t he ampli fier ’ s corresponding FRONT L and FRONT R , or REAR L and REAR R phono jacks.
11 If your autosound system has four speaker outputs and you are going to use four spea kers: Fl oati ng G round Connection Common G round Connection 12-1 976.
12 If your autosound system has only two speaker outputs and you are goin g to use four speakers : Float ing Gr ound Connection Common Gr ound Connection 12-1 976.
13 CONNECT ING THE SPEAKERS W it h th e speakers pl aced in t heir approx imate locations, run on e speaker wire from each spe aker to t he amp lifier. We reco mmend you use 16- or 18-gau ge marked or c ol or-coded wires to he lp you correct ly connec t th e speakers to y our ampl ifier.
14 Co nnectin g Four Speakers 1. Connect one end of a speaker wire’ s marked conductor to the amplifier ’s FL + (front-left positive) terminal. 2. Connect one end of the speaker wire’s unmarked conductor to the ampli- fi er ’s FL - ( front -left negative) terminal.
15 Connect ing T wo Speak er s If y ou are c onnecting only two speak ers, you can c onnec t them to the a mpl ifier’s front ( FL and FR ) or rear ( RL and RR ) s peaker terminals . 1. Connec t one e nd of a speaker wire’s mark ed cond uctor to the amplifier ’s FL + (front-left positive) o r RL + (rear-left positive) terminal.
16 TESTING THE C ONNECT IONS Before you perm anen tly mount the amplifier, temp orarily reconnec t your vehicle battery’s negative ( - ) cable, turn your v ehicle’s i g nition to ON or A CC, then test the conn ections.
17 3. Using t he mounting holes on the a mplifier as a guide, mark the locations for the mounti ng holes. 4. D r il l 9 / 64 -inch holes in the m arked location s, being careful not to dama ge anythin g be hind th e mounting surf ace. 5. Attach the amplifier to t he mount ing surf ac e using the supplied s heet-meta l screws a nd w ashers.
18 OPE R A T ION TURN ING ON T HE AM PLIFIE R The am plifier automat ically turns on whenev er you turn on y our au tosoun d sy s- tem. PO WER lights when the amp lifier is ope rating. SETTI NG THE LEVEL CONTROL For the be st performance, you can adjust the level of the au dio sign als that enter the ampli fier by following these steps.
19 2. T em porarily turn up the autos ound system’s volume cont rol to about one- third of its full rang e. Caution: Never tu rn the level controls up any farther than you need to get clear s ound at two th irds volume m aximum. 3. T urn ei ther the left or right LEVEL cont rol clockwise until you can hear t he soun d at a com fortable l evel.
20 MAINTENANCE CLEANER Keep the amplifier dry . If i t get s wet, wipe it dry immediately. Liquids can contain minerals that corrode electronic circuits. Use a nd sto re the am plifier only in norm al temperature env i - ronment s. Temperat ure e xtremes can s horten the life of el ec- tronic devices and distort or melt plastic parts.
21 REPLACING THE FUSES If the amplifier shuts down, you might need to r e place the power wi re’s 10-amp tube-type f use (such as Cat . No. 270 -1072, not sup plied), the 10-am p b lade-type fuse (such as Cat. No. 270-1081, not supplied) on t he back panel, or both fu ses.
