6 INSTALLING THE SP EAKE RPH ONE To make f ull use of the S peakerph one’s features, you m ust connect it to two tele- phone l ines, e ach with i ts own teleph one number. Howev er, you can conn ect it to a single line. Notes: • The first Spea ke rphone you conne ct to the phone l ine is a utomatically set to Extension 1 1.
7 IN STALLING TH E BACKUP BAT TERIES The S ystem 212 requires AC power to operate. However, i f AC power fails or you u nplug the speake r p hone, the three AAA backu p batte rie s (not s uppli ed) save stored information. We recom- mend you us e alk aline batteries, such as RadioSh ack Cat.
8 Placi ng the Phone o n a Desk T op Follow these st eps whe n you p lace the base on a desk, shelf, or table. 1. Remove the stand from the bot tom of the phone b y pre ssing and h old- ing in bo th spring tabs , then gent ly pulling the wide end of th e stand and lifting it of f .
9 5. Plug the m odul ar cord’s other end into the m odular phone li ne jack(s) for Line 1 and Line 2, then plug the AC adapter into a st an dard AC out- let . To silence the pho ne ringing, set t he station ex tension number for the phone (see “Setting t he Station Extens ion Numbers” on Pag e 12).
10 4. Insert the sup plied A C adap ter ’s barrel plug into the PO WER jack on the bottom of the telephone, t hen route the AC power cord t hrough the AC ADAPTER CORD slot.
11 CONNECT ING THE HANDSET Plug one end of the coil ed cord i nto the modul ar jack on the handset. Then con- nect it t o the jack on the side of the tele- phone bas e. Place the handset in the cradl e. You might prefer a longer cord for the hands et.
12 SETTI NG THE STATIO N EXTENSI ON NUMBERS When y ou conne ct more than one Speakerphone , you must also set a dif- ferent extension num ber for each s tation so you can us e the System ’s paging and intercom features. At each Speakerphone s tation: 1.
13 USING THE T ELEPHONE LINE STATUS The li ne status i ndicator to t he left of each line b utton show that line’ s status. LIN E LOC K Each t ime you pick up the handset or press SPKR PHONE t o make or answer a call, the s peak erphone ’s l ine-lock fea- ture au tomati cally l ocks out al l othe r in- ternal stations from using that line.
14 ANSWERING A CAL L To answer an incoming call, pick up the handset or press SPK R P H ON E . Note: I f another station a nswers an in- coming call before you do, your station is locked ou t and you hear ei ther the dial tone from the othe r phone line, or si- lence if both lines are being used by oth- er stations .
15 USIN G PRIVACY If you do not want t he person o n the oth- er end of the phone line to hear your conversat ion with someone else at your l oc ati on, pres s PRIV ACY . Th e PRIVACY indicat or lights and the m icrophone turns of f, but you can still he ar the call - in g p ar ty.
16 USING AUTO REDIAL Follow these steps to s et your Speaker- phone to automa tically redial a number (one that is busy, for example) up to ten ti mes . 1. While t he handset is on the crad le and SPKR PH ONE is of f, pr ess an available line’s button.
17 With One Ou tside Calle r and One Int ernal Stat ion 1. P lace the outside cal ler on hold by pressing HOLD . 2. P res s INTERCOM and dial the s ta- tion number y ou want to join your call. Note: Only one other internal station can join in y our call.
18 MEMORY DIALI NG You can st ore up to 20 nu mbers in the Speakerphone ’s memory lo cations. Then you ca n quickly dial these num - bers by pressing one or two but tons.
19 Use a flat-blade screwdriver to lift up t he plastic cover f rom t he telephone n umb er index c ard. For each stored num ber, write the person’ s or compan y’s name next t o the appropriate location n umber on th e phone num ber index card. Use a penc il in cas e you want to change it lat- er.
20 USING INTERCOM AND PA GING You can call ot he r s tations connected to the sam e phone li nes usi ng e ither the in- tercom or paging feature. Using the Speakerphone’s intercom fea- ture is like making a tele phone call to another st ation. You ca n have a two- way conversation when the called sta- tion ans wers.
