6 Chapter 1 Getting Started Setting up the J3400 The J3400 is self- contained, so you can star t using it immediately . Y ou should connec t AC power until the batter y is fully charged.

The first time Window s star ts, the Windo ws Vi sta Welcome Center appears. If you do not want this screen to appear every t ime you star t the computer , clea r the Ru n at star tup check box.

10 Chapter 2 Featu res Pe n An important difference between traditional PC s and T ablet PCs is that you fr equently use the tablet pen to interact with the computer instead of a mouse and k eyboard. The pen includes a pressure-sensitive tip, a functio n button and an eraser .
Chapter 2 Feature s 11 F ront panel buttons Y ou can use the but tons on the front of the tablet to per form many func tions without having to use the pe n. The buttons are customiz ab le, so you can mod ify their fu nc tions to suit the way you work .
12 Chapter 2 Featu res Batter y status light Y ou can use the indicator light on the right side of the tablet to monitor the status of the battery. The following illustration and table s how the battery status light and the various power stat e descriptions.

14 Chapter 2 Featu res Camera Y ou can use the built-in 2-megapixel auto-focus camera t o take pictures and save them to the hard disk driv e. The camera lens is on the back of the unit, and includes a light to illuminate the subject. The camera produc es pic t ures in JPG format with a resolution up to 1600 × 1200 pixels.

16 Chapter 2 Featu res Display The J3400 includes a 12 .1-inch display with th e following features: • A highly readable L C D (liquid cr ystal display). • WX GA, 1280 × 800 resolution. • A protective layer that off ers a firm writing sur face and minimizes glare.
Chapter 2 Feature s 17 Ambient light sensor (ALS) If you have dynamic brightness sele cted and are running on batt er y power , the ambient light sensor measures the surrounding light an d adjusts the display brightness and contrast accordingly . This ensures that you have proper settings for all lighting conditions.
18 Chapter 2 Featu res Security slot Y ou can use the security slot to attach y our tabl et to a desk , table or other fixture. Y ou must purchase a security lock separately .
Chapter 2 Feature s 19 Express car d slot (optional) The Express car d slot holds one Express card for networking, memor y expansion, or accessories. • T o inser t a n Express card, remove the card slot cover and place th e Express card in the slot with the label side up.
20 Chapter 2 Featu res Mobile Broadband (optional) The J3400 T ablet PC is available w ith an optional Mobile Broadband ad apter that you can use to send and r e ceive da ta wirelessl y. By using Mob ile Broadband , you can brow se the Internet , send and rec eive email, conn ec t to your com pany’ s intranet, or use W eb-based applications.
Chapter 2 Feature s 21 Batter y The J3400 includes t wo batter y bays for containing up to two h igh-capacit y Lithium-ion batteries that are installed on the back of the T a blet PC. If only one batter y is included with th e tablet, a batter y bay ca rtr idge (non-func tioning) is included for occupying the second batt ery bay .
22 Chapter 2 Featu res J-Series Mobile Keyboard (optional) The J-Series M obile Keyboard is a thin -profile , portable, full size keyboa rd solution for entering data in the J-Series T ablet PC . When in the closed position, the Mobile Keyboa rd has a thin profile and can be attached to the back of the J-Series T ablet PC for ea sy transporting.
23 Usin g you r T abl et PC 3 The J3400 T ablet PC runs Microso ft Windows V ista, which includes ink-to-text and wor d recognition, voice r ecognition, and improved securit y to help defend aga inst viruses, worms, and other threats. And unlike PDAs or other h andheld dev ices, the J3400 can run any W in dows Vista-compatible application.

Y ou may want to use the portrait orientation f or filling out forms or r eading an e -book. At other times, y o u may want a landscape orientatio n for W eb browsing or sketching.

The same desktop is visible on both displays. The extern al monitor must use the same display resolution as the T ablet PC.
