Make adjustments to your computer by following the guidelines found in this manual. Bring your computer to your nearest Best Buy location for all other adjustments. If you open your computer for maintenance or enhancement, first make sure the computer's AC power supply cord is disconnected fr om the main AC outlet.

GETTING ST AR TED Setting up your new Insignia computer is a simple process that should take just a few minutes. T ake time to read this guide to ensur e that you complete all the steps for a fast and successful setup. Please keep all documentation and software for your computer in a safe and convenient place.
FIND A PLACE TO SET UP YOUR NEW SYSTEM It's impor tant that you: • Choose a good location to set up your computer so that both you and your new computer are safe. Make sur e your working position is comfor table and promotes good posture while you'r e at your computer .
CONNECT THE MONITOR Unpack the Insignia CRT monitor , or another monitor you plan to use with your Insignia computer . Read and follow the monitor manufacturer's instr uctions. If softwar e came with your monitor , please follow the pr ocedures outlined in the manufacturer's documentation to install the appropriate drivers.
OPTIONAL: CONNECT TO A NETWORK If you're using your Insignia computer as par t of a home network, or connecting to a LAN, connect one end of a CA T5 network cable to the network por t on the back of the computer and the other end to a working cable or DSL modem.
TURNING OFF YOUR COMPUTER First, save all data and files, and close all application programs. Click "Star t" on the desktop menu, then in the "Shut Down Computer" dialog box, click "Shut Down" and "OK." T ur n of f your monitor , speakers, and any other devices connected to your comput- er .
MEDIA CARD READER (MODEL D400 ONL Y) The Media Card Reader r eads memor y cards used in digital cameras, MP3 players and other devices. Inser t cards accor ding to the illustration. Do not force car ds into slots as this can damage cards and/or the r eader .
CD/DVD DRIVES To play a CD or DVD, pr ess the load/eject button on the front of the drive. Place the CD or DVD label-side up in the center of the tray and press the button again to load the disc. Use PowerDVD, an application included with your Insignia computer , to access your DVDs.
ADDING PERIPHERALS Peripherals are devices that work with your computer to expand your capabilities. Peripherals include monitors, printers that use a parallel connection, USB devices such as printers, scanners, keyboards, headphones, and mor e. Follow the manufacturer's directions for easy installation of peripheral har dware and software.
ABOUT EXP ANDING AND UPDA TING YOUR COMPUTER Y ou may wish to upgrade or expand your computer's capabilities by adding more memor y , an additional hard drive, or an expansion car d. Y ou'll need to open the computer to per for m these tasks.
INST ALLING ADDITIONAL MEMORY Follow instr uctions on page 14 for removing the computer cover . . Open the securing clips at each end of the memor y module connector . Inser t the additional memor y module in its cor rect alignment into the module connector until it snaps into position.
ADJUSTING YOUR MONITOR Refer to the Insignia C170 monitor manual (or manual for other monitor you are using) and follow the guidelines to ensure that your monitor is per forming optimally .
HOW TO RESTORE YOUR COMPUTER USING WINDOWS XP The Microsoft Windows XP operating system pr ovides System Restore to enable you to re turn your computer to an earlier operating state (without af fecting data files) if changes to the hardwar e, software, or other system settings have left the computer in an undesirable operating state.
USING THE RESTORE DVD If Windows no longer operates, you may need to use the Restore DVD. Note: This operation may remove all data files fr om your hard disk. Back-up your files r egularly to prevent data loss. Once you inser t the DVD, the recover y application will default to Non-Destr uctive recov- er y .

Q. Why isn't my monitor working? A. Check to make sure that the monitor's power switch is tur ned on, and that the power cord is connected to the monitor and plugged into a working AC wall outlet or sur ge protector . Make sure the monitor cable is secur ely connected to the monitor por t on the back of your computer .
Q. Why can't I hear sound from my speakers? A. Make sure that your speakers ar e plugged in. Make sure that the power is connected and the speakers turned on. Also make sur e that the volume control is tur ned up. The master volume control found in Windows might also be tur ned down, or set to "mute.
Q. I've added a peripheral and it's not working... A. Refer to the peripheral manufacturer's documentation that came with the har dware, or visit the peripheral manufacturer's website and follow the r ecommended steps. Q. I've lost some of the files on my Hard Disk Drive.
ERROR MESSAGES Windows will present er ror messages to help pr event mistakes. Here ar e some common messages, and what to do when you see them: A filename cannot contain any of the following characters: / : * ? " < > I - Do not use these characters when naming files.
