The first time you turn on your notebook, the W indows Setup program runs automatically and includes opportunities to customize your setup.

Modem and Network C onnections Refe renc e G ui de 4– 3 Spec ial Restric tions in C ertain C ountries ■ Many countries impose a black out period after a modem repeatedly fails to connect to a service pro vider . The number of failed attempts and the period you must wait before trying again dif fer from country to country .
4–4 R eference Guide Modem and Network C onnections To C h a n g e Y o u r M o d e m S e t t i n g s The modem is already set up to be compatible with telephone systems and modems in most areas. Ho weve r, in some situations, you may hav e to change modem settings to match local conditions.
Modem and Network C onnections Refe renc e G ui de 4– 5 Connec tin g to a Local Area Netw or k (LAN) Y ou can connect to local area ne tworks (LANs). LANs giv e you access to network resources, such as printers and f ile servers on your corporate network, and possibly to the Internet.

Plug a standard 4-pin S-V ideo cable to the optional S-V ideo out jack on your notebook (ye llow connector on the back panel). Plug the other end of the cable to the S-V ideo in jack on your tele vision.

5–6 R eference Guide Add-On D e vices Using Dual Dis pl ay Mode Y ou can extend your desktop by connecting an external monitor to your notebook. 1. Select Start > Control Panel > Appearance and Themes > Display . 2. Select the Settings tab .
Add-On D e vices Refe renc e G ui de 5– 7 To C o n n e c t a 1 39 4 D ev i c e (Selec t Mode ls Onl y) If your notebook has a 1394 port (also kno wn as fire wire), you can use it to connect de vices such as audio and video equipment, disk dri ves, printers, and other notebooks.
5–8 R eference Guide Add-On D e vices Using t he Infrared P or t ■ Make sure the infrared port of your notebook and the infrared port of the de vice with which you want to communicate are positioned in a straight line facing each other . The 2 ports should be no more than 3.
Add-On D e vices Refe renc e G ui de 5– 9 Installin g Additional R AM (Mem or y) The notebook has 2 slots that hold 2 RAM modules. At least 1 slot contains a RAM module installed at the factory . Y ou can use both slots to expand your RAM. T o Ins tall a RAM Expansion Modul e Use only PC2100 DDR-266 MHz or higher RAM.
5–10 Re ference Gui de Add-On D e vices 4. Insert the RAM board into the connector at about a 30-degree angle until it is fully inserted. Then press do wn at both sides until both latches snap closed. 5. Replace the cov er . 6. Insert the battery pack.
Add-On D e vices Re ference Gui de 5–11 4. Release the 2 latches at the sides of the RAM board, so the free edge of the board pops up. Match your notebook to the follo wing illustration. 5. Pull the board out of the connector . 6. Replace the cov er .
5–12 Re ference Gui de Add-On D e vices Rep l ac in g t h e H ard Drive T o Repl ace t he H ard Driv e Y ou will need a small Phillips screwdri ver for this procedure. 1. Unplug the A C adapter , if connected. 2. Remov e the battery pack. 3. T urn the unit bottom side up.
Add-On D e vices Re ference Gui de 5–13 T o Rep lace t he H ard Driv e Hol der If you are installing a ne w hard drive that does not ha ve a holder , you can remov e the holder parts from the hard driv e you are removing. Y ou will need a small Phillips screwdri ver for this procedure.

6–2 R eference Guide T roubleshooting Audio Problems If No Sound is Au dible ■ If your model has a volume control, press the + (plus) b utton to increase the volume. ■ Select the speaker icon on the taskbar (if present). Clear the Mute all check box if selected .
T roubleshooting Refe renc e G ui de 6– 3 CD-ROM and D VD Problems If Y ou Cannot B oot from a CD or D VD ■ Make sure the CD or D VD is bootable. ■ Make sure the CD-R OM/DVD dri ve is selected as the boot de vice. See the “Basic Operation” chapter in this guide to change the boot sequence.

6–6 R eference Guide T r oubleshooting If Files Are Corrupted ■ Open My Computer , and the disk you want to scan. Select File > Properties. Select the Check No w box under the Error-checking section of the T ools tab . ■ Run the virus-scanning program.

On the Hardware tab, select De vice Manager and expand the infrared de vices. Select the infrared port and make sure that the de vice is enabled.

T roubleshooting Refe renc e G ui de 6– 9 If a Net w ork C onnection Respon ds Slo wly If your network connection uses a proxy serv er, try enabling the option for bypassing the proxy serv er for local addresses. Y ou can do this in Control Panel under your netw ork connection properties.
6–10 Re ference Gui de T roubleshooting Modem Problems If th e Modem Seems Slow ■ Excess static or noise on a line reduces the ov erall transmission speed of the modem connection. If necessary , contact your telephone company about f ixing this type of problem.
T roubleshooting Re ference Gui de 6–11 If th e Modem Dials In correctly ■ Check the telephone number you entered, including any digits required for outside access or long distance. ■ In Control Panel, open Phone and Modem Options. Check the dialing options—look for duplicate digits for outside access or long distance.
6–12 Re ference Gui de T roubleshooting If th e Modem Dials , Bu t Y ou Cannot H ear It ■ If your model has an audio mute light, make sure it is turned of f. If it is on, press the audio mute button. ■ Check the speaker v olume setting. ■ In Control Panel, open Phone and Modem Options, then select the modem and select Properties.
T roubleshooting Re ference Gui de 6–13 If th e Modem C licks Repea tedly , Bu t Does Not Conne c t ■ Make sure you are using an an alog telephone line (2, 3, or 4 wires). Y ou must not use a digital line. In a hotel, ask for a data line. ■ Check all cables and connections.
6–14 Re ference Gui de T roubleshooting If a PC Card Modem I s Not W orking Disable the internal modem: 1. Open the hardware De vice Ma nager . Select Start > Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance > System. 2. Select Modem to list the current modem de vices.
T roubleshooting Re ference Gui de 6–15 If th e Notebook Stops Responding ■ Press ctrl+alt+del and use T ask Manager to end the application that is not responding. ■ Press the po wer button for at le ast 4 seconds to turn of f and reset the notebook.
6–16 Re ference Gui de T roubleshooting ■ If you are using a po wer strip, remove the A C adapter from the po wer strip and plug it directly into a wall outlet.
T roubleshooting Re ference Gui de 6–17 If th e Time Remaining for the B at ter y P ac k I s Not Corr ect The T ime Remaining is an estima te, not a precise value, and is based on the rate at which th e notebook is using po wer at the moment.
6–18 Re ference Gui de T roubleshooting Printing Probl ems ✎ Y ou will usually be able to solve most printing problems by using the Print troubleshooter in W indo ws Help. Select Start > Help and Support. If a Serial or P arallel Prin ter Does Not Print ■ Make sure the printer is on and has paper in it.
T roubleshooting Re ference Gui de 6–19 Serial , P arallel and U SB Problems If a Serial Mouse Does Not W ork ■ Make sure you follo wed the manufacturer’ s installation instructions completely and hav e installed the mouse properly . If not, repeat the procedure.
6–20 Re ference Gui de T roubleshooting If th e Serial or P arallel Po r t Is N ot W orking ■ Make sure the port connection is secure. ■ Check the port settings in Control Panel. Open the hardw are De vice Manager, then select Ports (COM & LPT).

6–2 4 Re ference Gui de T roubleshooting 4. After you select the options you want, press F10 or use the Exit menu to exit BIOS Setup. 5. If the settings cause a conflict between devices during reboot, the system prompts you to run BIOS Setup, and marks the conflicting settings.

T roubleshooting Re ference Gui de 6–2 9 Safeguarding Y our D ata Software or de vices added to the notebook can cause your system to become unstable. T o safeguard your documents, store personal files in the My Documents folder and periodically create a backup copy of My Documents.
