4 Removal and replacement procedures Preliminary replacement requirements Tools required You will need the following tools to comple te the removal and re placement procedures: ● Flat-bla ded screw .
Cables and connectors CAUTION: When servicing the computer, be sure that c ables are placed in their prop er locations during the reassembly p rocess. Improp er cable placem ent can damage th e computer. Cables must be handle d with extreme care to avo id damage.
Grounding guidelines Electrostatic discharge damage Electronic componen ts are sensit ive to electrost atic discharge (ESD). Circuitry design and st ructure determine the deg ree of sensitiv ity.
Packaging and transporting guidelines Follow these groun ding guidelines whe n packaging and transp orting equipment: ● To avoid hand contact, transport products in static-safe tubes, bags, or boxes. ● Protect ESD-sensitive parts an d assemblies wi th conductive or approv ed containe rs or packaging.
Equipment guidelines Grounding equi pment must include eith er a wrist strap o r a foot strap at a grou nded workstation. ● When seated, wear a wrist strap connected to a grounded system. Wrist straps are flexibl e straps with a minimu m of one megohm ±1 0% resi stance in the ground cords.
Unknown user password If the computer you are servicing has an unknown user password, follow these steps to clear the password: NOTE: These steps also clear CMOS. 1. Shut down the co mputer. Component replacement procedures This chapter provides removal an d replacement proced ures. There are as many as 6 0 screws, in 9 different sizes, that mu st be re moved, replac ed, or loosene d when servicing the computer. Make specia l note of each screw size an d location during remova l and replacement.
Service tag The service tag, affixed to the bottom of the comp uter, provides information that ma y be needed when troubleshooting system problems. The service tag provides the following information: (1) Product name: This is the product name affixed to th e front of the compute r.
Computer feet The computer feet a re adhesive -backed rubber pads . The feet are in cluded in the Rubber Kit, spare part number 492 578-001. The re are 4 ru bber feet that atta ch to the base enclo sure in the locati ons illustrated below.

4. Remove the memory module (2) by pul ling the module a way from the slot at an angle. NOTE: The memory modu le is designed with a no tch (3) to prevent incorrect inserti on into the memory module slot. Reverse this procedure to insta ll the memory module .

2. Lift the front edge of the mem ory module compartment co ver (2) , swing it back, and remove the cover (3) . The memory module com partment cover is includ ed in the Plastics Kit, spare part number 492577-0 01. 3. Disconnect th e WLAN antenna ca bles (1) from the terminals on the WLAN module.
Primary hard drive NOTE: The 4.57-cm (1.80-inch) primary hard drive mu st be installed in the hard drive bay. Installation of this drive in the optical drive ba y is not supp orted. NOTE: All primary hard drive spare part kits include a hard drive bracket.
4. Loosen the 2 Phillips 2. 0×6.0 captive screws (1) that secure the hard drive bra cket, and remove the hard drive bracket (2) . 5. Remove the Phillips screw that secures the conn ector board to th e base enclosure (3) . 6. Tilt the primary hard drive up to ward you (1) to disengage it from the compartment.
9. Pull the edges of th e protective rubber gasket o ut and away from the hard drive (1) , and remove the gasket (2) . 10. If it is necessary to replace the primary hard drive connector bo ard, rele ase the ZIF con nectors (1) to which the prima ry hard drive connector boa rd cable is attached, and d isconnect the cable (2) .
WWAN module Description Spare pa rt number HP un2400 Mobile Broadband Module 483377-002 CAUTION: The WWAN module and the WL AN module are not in terchangeable .
5. Remove the two Phillips PM2. 0×4.0 screws th at secure the module to the computer (2) . 6. Remove the WWAN module (3) by pulling the module away from the slo t at an angle. NOTE: WWAN modules are designed with a notch (4) to prevent incorrect inse rtion.

Before removing the switch cover and keyboard, follow these steps: 1. Shut down the co mputer. If you are unsure whether th e computer is off or in Hibe rnation, turn the computer on, and th en shut it down thr ough the operating system. 2. Disconnect all ext ernal devices connected to the computer.
6. Release the switch cove r (1) by sliding it to the right, an d then lifting it (2) as far as the LED board cable and the power button board cab le allow. 7. Lift the rear edge of the keyboard and swing it up and forward until it rests upside down o n the palm rest.
9. Release the ZIF conne ctor (3) to which the pointing stick cable is attached, and discon nect the pointing stick cable (4) from the system board. 10. Remove the keyboard. 11. Disconnect the LED board cable (1) and the power button bo ard cable (2) from the system board.
RTC battery NOTE: Removing the RTC batte ry and leaving it un installed for 5 or more minute s causes all passwords and CMO S settings to be clea red. Description Spare part number RTC battery 481089-001 Before r emoving th e RTC bat tery, foll ow these steps: 1.
Secondary hard drive NOTE: The 6.35-cm (2.50-inch) secondary hard drive must be installed in the optical drive bay. Installation of this drive in the hard drive bay is not su pported. (T h is option is no t available when the optical drive is installed.
2. Remove the 5 Mylar screw covers (1) , the 4 Phillips screws (2) , and the 2 Phillips PM2. 0×6.0 screws (3) that secure the seco ndary hard driv e cradle assembly to the computer. 3. Turn the computer right-side up, and open the display as far as po ssible.
6. Remove the secondary hard drive cradle assembly (3) from the optical drive bay. 7. Remove the four Phillips PM3. 0×4.0 secondary hard drive screw s that secure the secondary hard drive to the cradle assemb ly. 8. Tilt the hard drive up and away fro m the connector board (1) , and disconn ect the hard drive from the connector board (2) .
9. Remove the hard drive from th e cradle assembly (3) . 10. If it is necessary to replace the seco ndary hard drive connector board, remo ve the two Phillips screws that secu re the conne ctor board to th e cradle assembly (1) . 11. Remove the secondary ha rd drive connector bo ard (2) .
14. Remove the secondary ha rd drive system conn ector board (4) . Reverse the ab ove proced ure to reassemb le and install the second ary hard drive. Component replacement procedures 71.

3. Disconnect th e wireless antenna cables from the WWAN mo dule (3) , and feed them do wn through the ho le (4) . 4. Turn the comput er right side up , and open the d isplay . 5. Thread the WLAN (1) and WWAN (2) ca bles out through the to p cover, and rele ase the cables from the top cover clips (3) .
7. Remove the two Mylar screw covers (1) and the four Tor x T8M2.0 ×6.0 sc rews (2) that secure the display assembly to the computer. 8. Turn the computer right-side up, with the front toward you. 9. Open the computer. CAUTION: The display assembly will be unsupported when the fo llowing screws are removed.
12. If it is necessary to replace the di splay be ze l, remove the fo ur rubber screw covers (1) and the four Torx T8M2.5×6.0 screws (2) that secure the display be zel to the display assembly. NOTE: The rubber screw co vers on the displa y bezel top ed ge are thicker than the rubber screw covers on the d isplay bezel b ottom edge.
17. Remove the display pan el (3) . 18. Remove the two Phillips PM2.0×4.0 screws (1) that secure each display hing e to the displ ay panel. 19. Remove the display hin ges (2) . 20. If it is necessary to replace the di splay panel ca ble, turn the display panel upside down, with the display panel bo ttom edge towa rd you.
23. Remove the display pan el cable (3) . 24. If it is necess ary to replace the microphones (1) , remove the microphones from the displa y enclosure (2) .

2. Remove the following screw covers and screws: (1) Four rubber screw cove rs. The rubber scre w co vers are inclu ded in the Rubber Kit, spare part number 481106-001 . (2) Six Torx T8M2.5×6.0 screws. (3) One Phillips PM2.0×5.0 scre w. (4) One To rx T8M2.
6. Lift the rear edge of the top cover (1) and swing it up and forwar d until it rests at an angle . 7. Lift the front edge of the top cover (2) until it disengages from the base enclosure. 8. Remove the top cover. Reverse this procedure to insta ll the top cover.
LED board Description Spare part number LED board (includes cable and Mylar cover) 499209-001 Before removing the LED boa rd, follow thes e steps: 1. Shut down the co mputer. If you are unsure whether th e computer is off or in Hibe rnation, turn the computer on, and th en shut it down thr ough the operating system.
3. Release the LED b oard (3) from the clips built into the base enclosure. 4. Remove the LED board and cab le. Reverse the abov e procedur e to install the LED bo ard.
Speaker Description Spare part number Speaker 481109-001 Before removing the speaker, follow these ste ps: 1. Shut down the co mputer. If you are unsure whether th e computer is off or in Hibe rnation, turn the computer on, and th en shut it down thr ough the operating system.
Bluetooth module cable NOTE: The Bluetooth modu le cable is included in the Cable Kit, spa re part number 4925 55-001. Before removing the system board, follow these steps: 1. Shut down the co mputer. If you are unsure whether th e computer is off or in Hibe rnation, turn the computer on, and th en shut it down thr ough the operating system.
System board Description Spare part number System board (includes p rocessor, r eplacement thermal material, and r eplacement thermal material cleaning kit) With LV SL9600 processor 513947-001 With LV.
Remove the system bo ard: 1. Release the ZIF conne ctor to which th e front LE D board cable is attached and disconnec t the front LED board cable (1) from the system board. 2. Disconnec t the speaker cabl e (2) from the system board. 3. Remove the three Torx 8 T8M2.
ExpressCard assembly Description Spare part number ExpressCard assemb ly 492567-001 Before removing the PC Card assembly, follow these steps: 1. Shut down the co mputer. If you are unsure whether th e computer is off or in Hibe rnation, turn the computer on, and th en shut it down thr ough the operating system.
3. Turn the system board rightside up, with the rear toward you. 4. Remove the ExpressCard assembly. Reverse this procedure to inst all the ExpressCard assemb ly.
Modem module Description Spare part number Modem modules NOTE: The modem module spare part kits do not include a mode m module cable. The modem module cable is inclu ded in the Cable Kit, spare part number 49 2555-001.
4. Remove the modem module . Reverse this procedure to in stall the modem module. Component replacement procedures 91.
Fan Description Spare part num ber Fan (includes thermal material) 492568-001 NOTE: To proper ly ventilate the comp uter, allow at least a 7.6-cm (3-i nch) clearance on the right side and rear p anel of the com puter. The computer uses an electric fan fo r ventilation.
4. Lift the fan up (3) to remove. Reverse this procedure to insta ll the fan. Component replacement procedures 93.
Heat sink Description Spare part number Heat sink (includes replacement thermal material and r eplacement thermal mate rial cleaning kit) 492582–001 Before removing the heat si nk, follow the se steps: 1.
3. Remove the heat sink (2) . NOTE: The thermal mate rial must be thoroughly clean ed from the surfaces of the heat sink and system board each time the heat sink is re moved. Thermal paste an d pads are located on the heat sink (1) and on syste m board components (2) .
5 Computer Setup Starting Computer Setup Computer Setup is a preinstalled, ROM-based utility that can be used even when the operating system is not working or will not load. NOTE: Some of the Computer Setu p menu items listed in this guide ma y not be supp orted by your computer.
Using Computer Setup Navigating and selectin g in Computer Setup The information and setti ngs in Computer Setup a re accessed from the File, Se curity, Diagnostics, and System Configuration men us. To navigate and select in C omputer Setup, follow these steps: 1.
Restoring factory setting s in Computer Setup NOTE: Restoring defaults will not change the hard drive mode. To return all settings in Computer Setup to the values that were set at the factory, follow these steps: 1.
Computer Setup menus The menu tables in this sect ion provide an over view of Comput er Setup options. NOTE: Some of the Computer Se tup menu items list ed in this chapter may no t be supported by your computer.
