4 Removal and replacement procedures Preliminary replacement requirements Tools required You will need the following tools to comple te the removal and re placement procedures: ● Flat-bla ded screw .
Cables and connectors CAUTION: When servicing the computer, be sure that c ables are placed in their prop er locations during the reassembly p rocess. Improp er cable placem ent can damage th e computer. Cables must be handle d with extreme care to avo id damage.
Grounding guidelines Electrostatic discharge damage Electronic componen ts are sensit ive to electrost atic discharge (ESD). Circuitry design and st ructure determine the deg ree of sensitiv ity.
Packaging and transporting guidelines Follow these groun ding guidelines whe n packaging and transp orting equipment: ● To avoid hand contact, transport products in static-safe tubes, bags, or boxes. ● Protect ESD-sensitive parts an d assemblies wi th conductive or approv ed containe rs or packaging.
Equipment guidelines Grounding equi pment must include eith er a wrist strap o r a foot strap at a grou nded workstation. ● When seated, wear a wrist strap connected to a grounded system. Wrist straps are flexibl e straps with a minimu m of one megohm ±1 0% resi stance in the ground cords.
Component replacement procedures This chapter provides removal an d replacement proced ures. There are as many as 95 screws and screw locks, in 15 different sizes, that must be removed, replaced, or loosened when servicing the computer . Make special note of each screw and screw lock size and location du ring removal and repl acement.
Computer feet The computer feet a re adhesive -backed rubber pads . The feet are in cluded in the Rubber Kit, spare part number 641 831-001 for HP ProBook 6460b mo dels and 64276 8-001 for HP EliteBook 8460p/w models. There are 6 rubber fe et that attach to th e base enclo sure in the locations illustra ted below.

Install the battery by inserting it into the battery bay until you hear a click. SIM NOTE: This section applies only to co mputer models with WWAN capability. NOTE: If there is a SIM inserted in th e SIM slot, it must be remove d before disassembling the computer.
Display assembly components (pan el, bezel, webcam, microphone) All display assemblies include WL AN antenna transceivers and cables. WWAN models also include 2 WWAN antenna transceivers and cables.
Before removing the display panel , follow these steps: 1. Shut down the co mputer. If you are unsure whether th e computer is off or in Hibe rnation, turn the computer on, and th en shut it down thr ough the operating system. 2. Disconnect all ext ernal devices connected to the computer.
5. Remove the display bezel (4) . 6. If it is necessary to replace the webcam module, ge ntly pull th e module away from the double- sided tape on the display enclos ure (1) , disconnect the webcam cable from the module (2) , and then remove the webcam.
9. Pivot the display panel up ward until it sits at a 90 de gree angle (3) . 10. Disconnec t the display pane l cable from the bac k of the display panel (1) . 11. Remove the six Phillip s PM2.5×5.0 screws (2) that secure the displa y panel to the brackets.

Bottom door The bottom door is ava ilable in the Plastics Kit, spare part number 6418 32-001 for HP ProBook 6460b models an d 642804-001 for HP EliteBook 8460p/w mode ls. Before disa ssembling the co mputer, follow these steps: 1. Shut down the co mputer.

4. Remove the optical drive (3) from the computer. 5. If it is necessary to replace the optical drive bracket, position the optica l drive with the rear toward y ou. 6. Remove the three Phillips PM2.0×3.0 screws (1) that secure the optical driv e bracket to th e optical drive.

4. Grasp the Mylar tab on the hard drive and slide the hard driv e to the right (2) to disconnect it from the system board connector. 5. Remove the ha rd drive (3) from the hard drive bay. 6. If it is necessary to re place the hard dr ive bracket, remove the two Phillips PM3.

3. Remove the memory module (2) by pul ling the module a way from the slot at an angle. NOTE: Memory modules a re designed with a n otch (3) to prevent incorrect insertion into the memory module sl ot. NOTE: The computer uses tw o memory slots. Th e top slot houses th e expansion memo ry module and is shown in the first image belo w.
WWAN module CAUTION: The WWAN module and the WL AN module are not in terchangeable . 3. Disconnect th e power from the c omputer by first unplugging the power cord from the AC ou tlet, and then unpl ugging the AC adap ter from the comput er. 4. Remove the batt ery (see Battery on page 63 ). 5. Remove the bottom door (see Bottom door on pa ge 70 ).
4. Remove the WLAN module (3) by pulling the module away from the slot at an angle. NOTE: WLAN module s are designed with a notch (4) to prevent incorrect insertion.
Bluetooth module NOTE: The Bluetooth modu le spare part kit does not include a Bluetooth module ca ble. The Bluetooth modul e cable is included in the Ca ble Kit, spare part number 64183 0-001. See Cable Kit on page 39 for more Cable Kit spare part number information.
Modem module NOTE: The modem module spare part kit does not includ e a modem module cable. The mo dem module cable is in cluded in the Cable Kit, spare pa rt number 64183 0-001. See Ca ble Kit on page 39 for more Cable Kit spare part number i nformation.
Fan Description Spare part num ber Fan 641839-001 Before removing the fan, follow these step s: 1. Shut down the co mputer. If you are unsure whether th e computer is off or in Hibe rnation, turn the computer on, and th en shut it down thr ough the operating system.
NOTE: To prop erly ventilate the comput er, allow at le ast a 7.6-cm (3-in) clea rance on the l eft side of the computer. The computer uses an electric fan for ventilation . Th e fan is controlled by a te mperature sensor and is designed to turn on automatically when high temp erature cond itions exist.
4. Pull the heat sink away from the si de of the compute r to remove it (3) . NOTE: The first image shows the discret e heat sink, th e second image shows the UMA heat sink.
NOTE: For UMA models, thor oughly clean thermal materia l from the surfaces of the processor (1) and the heat sink (2) each time you remove the heat sink. All heat sink an d processor spare part kits include thermal material. Reverse this procedure to insta ll the heat sink.

4. Remove the batt ery (see Battery on page 63 ). 5. Remove the bottom door (see Bottom door on pa ge 70 ). 6. Remove the fan (see Fan on page 90 ). 7. Remove the heat sink (see Heat sin k on page 91 ). Remove the proce ssor: 1. Position the computer upside-down with the front toward you.

3. Using a flat-blad e screwdr iver, press on the tab s along the bottom o f the computer to disengage the keyboa rd. 4. Position the computer right-side up with the front toward you. 5. Open the compute r as far as possible. 6. Lift and rotate the keyboa rd (1) until it rests upside -down on top of the Touch pad (2) .
8. Lift the keyboard connector l atch (2) , and then disconnect the keyboard cable from the system board (3) . 9. Remove the keyboard. Reverse this procedure to insta ll the keyboard.
Before removing the bottom cover, follow the se steps: 1. Shut down the co mputer. If you are unsure whether th e computer is off or in Hibe rnation, turn the computer on, and th en shut it down thr ough the operating system. 2. Disconnect all ext ernal devices connected to the computer.

5. Disconnec t the speaker cabl e from the system board connector (2) . 6. Release the bottom co ver by lifting the edge s until it disenga ges from the compu ter. 7. Remove the bottom cover from the computer. Reverse this procedure to insta ll the bottom cover.

14. If you need to remove the hi nge covers from the displa y hinges, pull the hi nges toward one another to remove them. 15. If it is necessary to replace the di splay hi nges, remove the six Phillips PM2 .5×3.0 screws (1) that secure each display h inge to the display panel.
