4 Removal and replacement procedures Preliminary replacement requirements Tools required You will need the following tools to comple te the removal and re placement procedures: ● Flat-bla ded screw .
Cables and connectors CAUTION: When servicing the computer, be sure that c ables are placed in their prop er locations during the reassembly p rocess. Improp er cable placem ent can damage th e computer. Cables must be handle d with extreme care to avo id damage.
Grounding guidelines Electrostatic discharge damage Electronic componen ts are sensit ive to electrost atic discharge (ESD). Circuitry design and st ructure determine the deg ree of sensitiv ity.
Packaging and transporting guidelines Follow these groun ding guidelines whe n packaging and transp orting equipment: ● To avoid hand contact, transport products in static-safe tubes, bags, or boxes. ● Protect ESD-sensitive parts an d assemblies wi th conductive or approv ed containe rs or packaging.
Equipment guidelines Grounding equi pment must include eith er a wrist strap o r a foot strap at a grou nded workstation. ● When seated, wear a wrist strap connected to a grounded system. Wrist straps are flexibl e straps with a minimu m of one megohm ±1 0% resi stance in the ground cords.
Component replacement procedures This chapter provides removal an d replacement proced ures. There are as many as 95 screws and screw locks, in 15 different sizes, that must be removed, replaced, or loosened when servicing the computer . Make special note of each screw and screw lock size and location du ring removal and repl acement.

4. Remove the ha rd drive (3) from the hard drive bay. 5. If it is necessary to re place the hard drive bracket, re move the tape (1) that secures the Mylar cover down onto the bracket, and then lift to open the Myla r cover (2) . 6. Remove the two Phillips PM3.
Memory modules NOTE: Primary and expansion memory is insta lled in a stacke d configuration in the bo ttom of the computer. WWAN module CAUTION: The WWAN module and the WL AN module are not in terchangeable . 3. Disconnect th e power from the c omputer by first unplugging the power cord from the AC ou tlet, and then unpl ugging the AC adap ter from the comput er. 4. Remove the batt ery (see Battery on page 40 ). 5. Remove the bottom door (see Bottom door on pa ge 42 ).
4. Remove the WLAN module (3) by pulling the module away from the slot at an angle. NOTE: WLAN module s are designed with a notch (4) to prevent incorrect insertion.

4. Insert a screwdriver or similar tool into the gap near the WWAN module comp artment and push to disengage the keyboard. 5. Position the compute r uprigh t with the fron t toward you. 6. Open the compute r as far as possible. 7. Lift and rotate the keyboa rd (1) until it rests on the palm rest (2) .
10. Remove the keyboard (3) . Reverse this procedure to insta ll the keyboard. Top cover Description Spare part num ber For use in models with a fingerprint reader 646251-001 For use in models without a fingerprin t reader 646253-001 Before removing the top cover, follow these steps: 1.
2. Remove the following covers an d screws that secure the top cover to the computer: (1) 4 rubber screw covers (2) 10 Torx T8M2.5×6.0 screws 3. Remove the following scre ws that se cure the top cover to the computer: (1) 3 Phillips PM2.0×4.0 screws from the optical drive bay (2) 3 Phillips PM2.
5. Remove the 6 Torx T8 M2.5×6.0 screws that secure the top cover to the computer. 6. Remove the following cabl es from the system board: ● Lift the connector latch (1) and disconnect the function .
8. Insert a screwdriver through th e holes in the b a ttery bay and pre ss to disengage the top cover from the c omputer. 9. Position the compute r uprigh t with the fron t toward you.
12. Lift the connector latch (1) , disconnect the card reade r cable (2) , and then lift the top cover fro m the computer (3) . Reverse this procedure to insta ll the top cover.
Card reader board Description Spare part num ber Card reader board 646292-001 Before removing the card reader, follo w these steps: 1. Shut down the co mputer. If you are unsure whether th e computer is off or in Hibe rnation, turn the computer on, and th en shut it down thr ough the operating system.
5. Rotate the Tou chpad button bo ard upward (4) , and then remove it (5) . Reverse this procedure to insta ll the card reader. Speaker assembly Description Spare part num ber Speaker assembly (includes housing) 646298-001 Before removing the speaker assembly, follow these steps: 1.
Remove the speaker assembly: 1. Position the top cove r upside-down with the front toward you. 2. Remove the Quick La unch board cable from atop the righ t speaker (1) . 3. Remove the power button board ca ble from atop the left speaker (2) . 4. Remove the four Philli ps PM2.
Quick Launch board Description Spare part num ber Quick Launch board 646296-001 Before removing the Quick Lau nch board, follo w these steps: 1. Shut down the co mputer. If you are unsure whether th e computer is off or in Hibe rnation, turn the computer on, and th en shut it down thr ough the operating system.
4. Lift the side of th e board (3) , slide it out from u nder the tab, and then remove the board from the top cove r (4) . Reverse this procedure to in stall the Qu ick Launch board. Power button board Description Spare part num ber Power button board 646294-001 Before removing the power button board, follow th ese steps: 1.
Remove the powe r button board: 1. Position the top cove r upside-down with the front toward you. 2. Remove the two Phillips PM2.0×4.0 screws (1) tha t secure the board to the top cover. 3. Lift the boar d up at an angle (2) , and then remove it from the top cover (3) .
Modem module NOTE: The modem module spare part kit does not includ e a modem module cable. The mo dem module cable is in cluded in the Cable Kit, spare pa rt number 64630 3-001. See Ca ble Kit on page 27 for more Cable Kit spare part number i nformation.
4. Disconnect th e modem module cable (3) from the modem module. Reverse this procedure to in stall the modem module. 70 Chapter 4 Remova l and replacement procedures.
Lid switch Description Spare part num ber Lid switch board 646289-001 Before removing the lid switch, fo llow these steps: 1. Shut down the co mputer. If you are unsure whether th e computer is off or in Hibe rnation, turn the computer on, and th en shut it down thr ough the operating system.
USB board Description Spare part num ber USB board 646287-00 1 Before removing the USB board, follow these ste ps: 1. Shut down the co mputer. If you are unsure whether th e computer is off or in Hibe rnation, turn the computer on, and th en shut it down thr ough the operating system.
4. Lift the board and cable straight up out of the computer (4) Reverse this procedure to insta ll the USB board. Component replacement procedures 73.
RJ-11 jack cable NOTE: The RJ-11 jack cable is inclu ded in the Cable Kit, spare part number 646303-001. Before removing the RJ-11 jack cable, follow these steps: 1. Shut down the co mputer. If you are unsure whether th e computer is off or in Hibe rnation, turn the computer on, and th en shut it down thr ough the operating system.
4. Remove the RJ-11 jack fr om the clip built in to the base enclos ure (3) . Reverse this procedure to in stall the RJ-11 jack cabl e. System board NOTE: All system board spare part kits include replacement thermal material.

5. Lift the system board up at an angle (4) to gain access to the cables und erneath. 6. On the bottom of the system board, di sconnect the battery connect or cable (1) from the system board. 7. Disconnect the smaller power cabl e (2) and the larg er power cable (3) from the system board.
RTC battery Description Spare part num ber RTC battery 449137-001 Before r emoving th e RTC bat tery, foll ow these steps: 1. Shut down the co mputer. If you are unsure whether th e computer is off or in Hibe rnation, turn the computer on, and th en shut it down thr ough the operating system.
3. Lift the battery from the system board (2 ) . Reverse this procedure to in stall the RTC battery. Component replacement procedures 79.
Fan Description Spare part num ber Fan 646285-001 Before removing the fan, follow these step s: 1. Shut down the co mputer. If you are unsure whether th e computer is off or in Hibe rnation, turn the computer on, and th en shut it down thr ough the operating system.
4. Remove the fan fro m the system board (3) . Reverse this procedure to insta ll the fan. NOTE: To prop erly ventilate the comput er, allow at le ast a 7.6-cm (3-in) clea rance on the l eft side of the computer. The computer uses an electric fan for ventilation .
Heat sink All heat sink spare part kits in clude replace ment thermal material. Description Spare part num ber Heat sink for use in computer s with discrete gr aphics 654310-001 Heat sink for use in comput ers with UMA graphics 654311-001 Before removing the heat si nk, follow the se steps: 1.
3. Remove the heat sink from the system board (5) . NOTE: For UMA models, thoroughly clean thermal mate rial from the surface of the system board (1) and heat sink (2) each time you remove the heat si nk. All heat sink and pro cessor spare part ki ts include thermal material.

3. Lift the processor (2) straight up and remove it. NOTE: The gold tria ngle (3) on the p rocessor must be alig ned with the triangle (4) embossed on the processo r slot when you inst all the processor. Reverse this procedure to insta ll the processor.
Power cable The power cable is in cluded in the Cabl e Kit, spare part number 646303-001. Before removing the power cable, follow th ese steps: 1. Shut down the co mputer. If you are unsure whether th e computer is off or in Hibe rnation, turn the computer on, and th en shut it down thr ough the operating system.
3. Lift the power cable assembly fro m the computer (2) . Reverse this procedure to in stall the power cable. Component replacement procedures 87.
Display assembly All display assemblies include WLAN antenna transceivers and cables. WWAN models include 2 WWAN antenna transceivers and cables. For a list of individual display spare parts, see Display components on page 25 . Description Spare part number 39.
3. If necessary, disconnect the webcam cable (1) and display cable (2) from the system board, and then remove the cab les from the clip (3) . 4. Remove the four Philli ps PM2.5×7.0 screws (1) from the hinges, noting the grounding wire connected to the screw in the left hinge (2) .
5. Lift the display from the comp uter (3) . When installing th e display assembly, be sure that the wireless an tenna cables ar e routed and arranged properly. Failure to properly route the ant enna s can result in degradatio n of the computer's WLAN and WWAN perf ormance.
7. To replace the disp lay bezel, remove the two rub ber screw covers (1) and the two Torx T8M2.5×6.0 screws (2) in the bottom corners of the display bezel. 8. Flex the to p (3) of the bezel, the inside edges of the left an d right sides (4) , and then th e bottom (5) of the bezel until it disengages from the displa y enclosure.
10. If it is necessary to replace the webcam module (shown in th e following image) or micropho ne module from the display enclosure, disconnect the cabl e from the module (1) , and then gently pull the module away from the double-sided tape on th e display enclosure (2) .
13. Disconnec t the display pane l cable from the bac k of the display pan el by lifting the tape over the connector (1) , and then disconnecting the cable fro m the panel (2) . The display cable is available using spa re part number 6057 66-001 for mod els without a webcam, 646273-0 01 for models with a we bcam.
15. Remove the display hin ges (2) . Display hinges are avai lable usi ng spare part number 646279-00 1. 16. If you need to remo ve the WLAN or WWAN a ntennas, lift the WLAN anten na cables (1) or WWAN antenna cables (2) from the clips an d routing paths (3) built into the display enclos ure.
17. To remove the display cable (1) or webcam cable (2) from the disp lay enclosure, remove the cable from the clips (3) and routing paths in th e display enclosure.
