Component Description (4) TouchPad zone Moves the pointer and selects or activates items on the screen. (5) Left TouchPad button Functions like the left button on an e xternal mouse. (6) Right pointing stick button Functions like the right button on a n external mouse.
Component Description (4) HP QuickWeb light ● White: The computer is on. ● Off: The computer is off or in Hibernation mode. NOTE: For mo re information, refer to “HP Qui ckWeb” in this guide and to the HP QuickWeb software Help. (5) Mute light ● White: Computer sound is on.
Buttons and fingerprint r eader (select models only) Component Description (1) P ower but ton ● Wh en the computer is off, press the power button to turn on the computer. ● When the computer is on, press the po wer button briefly to initiate Sleep.
Component Description (3) QuickWeb button ● Wh en the computer is off or in Hiber nation mode, press the button to open HP QuickWeb. ● When the computer is in Microsoft Windows, press the button to open the default Web browser. ● When the computer is in HP QuickWeb, press the button to open the default Web browser.
Keys Component Description (1) esc key Displays system information when pressed in combination with the fn key. (2) fn key Executes frequently used system functions when pre ssed in combination with a function key, the num lk key, or the esc key. (3) Windows logo key Displays the Windows Start menu.
Front Component Description (1) Wireless light ● White: An integrated wireless device, such as a wireless local area network (WLAN) device and /or a Bluetooth® device, is on. ● Amber: All wireless devices are off. (2) Power light ● White: Power is on.
Right Component Description (1) Dockin g con nector Conn ects an optional docking device. (2) ExpressCard slot Supports optional 34mm ExpressCards. (3) Media Card Reader Supports the following digital.
Left Component Description (1) Powe r connector Connects an AC adapter (2) RJ-4 5 (network) jack Connects a network cable. Th e RJ-45 jack has two activity indicator lights. ● Amber: The RJ-45 jack is active. ● Green: The RJ-45 jack is on. (3) RJ-11 (modem) jack (select m odels only) Connects a modem cable.
Display Component Description (1) WLAN antennas (3)* Send and r eceive wireless signals to communicate with wireless local-area networ ks (WLAN). (2) WWAN antennas (2)* Send and receive wireless sign als to communicate with wireless wide-area networks (WWAN ).
Rear Component Description (1) E xternal monitor port Connects an external VGA monitor or p rojector. (2) USB 2.0 port Connects an optio nal USB device.
Bottom Component Description (1) Service cover release latch Releases the cover for the hard drive bay and memory module slots. NOTE: A service cove r screw is under the release latch. (2) Battery bay Holds the battery. (3) Battery release latch Releases the battery from the battery bay.
Component Description (8) H ard d rive b ay and memory module compartments Contains the hard drive, the wirele ss LAN module slot, the WWAN module slot, and the memory module slots.
3 HP QuickWeb Getting Started The HP QuickWeb en vironment provides a fun and e ngaging way to perform ma ny of your favorite activities. Your computer is ready to go within second s of starting QuickWe b , allowing you to rapidly access the Internet, widgets, and communication programs.
4 N e t w o r k i n g ● Using an Internet service provid er ( ISP) ● Conne cting to a wireless network NOTE: Internet hardware and software features vary depending on computer model an d your location.
Connecting to a wireless network Wireless technolog y transfers data across radio waves instead o f wires. Your computer may be equipped with one or more of the followi ng wireless devi ces: ● Wirel.
Configuring a wireless router For help in setting up a WLAN, refer to the informat ion provided by your route r ma nu fa ctu re r or yo u r ISP. The Windows operating system also provides tools to help you set up a new wireless network.
5 Keyboard and pointing devices ● Using the keyboa rd ● Using pointing devices Using the keyboard Identifying the hotkeys A hotkey is a combination of the fn key (1) and either the esc key (2) or one of the function keys (3) . To use a hot key : ▲ Briefly press the fn key, and then briefly press the se cond key of the hotkey combination.
Hotkey combination Description fn + f4 Switches the screen image among display devices c onnected to the computer. For example, if a monitor is connected to the computer, fn+f 4 alternates the screen image fr om computer display to monitor display to simultaneous display on both the computer and the monitor.
Component Description (1 ) fn key Turns the embedded numeric keypad on and off wh en pressed in combination with the num lk key. NOTE: The embedded numeric keypad will not function while an external keyboard or numeric keypad is connected to the computer.
Turning the embedded numeric key pad on and off Press fn + num lk to turn on the emb edded numeric keyp ad. Press fn + num lk again to turn off the keypad. NOTE: The embedded numeric keypad is turned off while an external keyb oard or numeric keypad is connected to the compute r.
Turning the Touc hPad off a nd on To turn the Tou chPad off and on, quickly do uble-tap the Tou chPad light. NOTE: The TouchPa d light is off when the Touch Pad is on. Navigating To move the pointer, slid e one finger across the Touc hPad in the direction you want the pointer to go.
Selecting Use the left and right T ouchPad buttons like th e corresponding butto ns on an external mouse. Using TouchPad gestures The TouchPad sup ports a variety of gestures. To use TouchPad gestures, place two fin gers on the TouchPad at the same time.
Scrolling Scrolling is useful for movi ng up, down, or sideways on a page o r image. To scroll, p lace two finge rs slightly apart on the To uchPad, an d then d rag them ac ross the T ouchPad in an up, down, left, or right motion. NOTE: Scrolling speed is controlled by finge r speed.
Rotating Rotating allows you to rotate it ems such as photos. T o rotate, anchor you r left forefinger in the TouchPad zone. Move the right forefing er around th e an chored finger in a sweeping moti on, moving from 12 o’clock to 3 o’clock. To reverse the rotation, move your right forefinger from 3 o’clock to 12 o’clock.

2. Remove the battery from the computer (2) . Replacing or upgrading the hard drive CAUTION: To prevent information loss or an unresponsive system: Shut down the computer before removing the hard drive from the hard drive bay. Do not remove th e hard drive while the computer is on, in th e Sleep state, or in Hibern ation.
7. Remove the service cover by sliding the service cover out (4) and lifti ng it (5) . 8. Remove the fou r hard drive screws (1) . 9. Lift the hard drive by the tab (2) and pull away from the connecti.
Installing a hard drive 1. Slide the hard drive into the hard dri ve bay until it is sea ted (1) . 2. Replace the fou r ha rd dr ive screw s (2) . 3. Slide the service cover onto th e computer (2) . 4. Slide the service cover r ele as e latch to the rig ht (3) to replace the se rvice co ver s c re w (4) .
5. Slide the release latch to the left (5) to secure the service cover. 6. Replace the battery. 7. Connect AC p ower and external devices to the compu ter. 8. Turn on the co mputer. Adding or replacing memory modules The computer ha s two memory module slo ts.
CAUTION: To prevent information loss or an unresponsive system: Shut down the compu ter before adding or repl acing mem ory modules. Do not remove a memory module while the comp uter is on, in the Sleep state, or in Hibern ation. If you are not sure whet her the compute r is of f or in Hibernation, turn the computer on by pressing the power button.
b. Grasp the edge o f the memory modul e (2) , and th en gently pull the memory module ou t of the memory module slot. CAUTION: To prevent damage to the memory mod ule, hold the me mory module by the edges only. Do not touch th e components on the memory modul e.
c. G ently press the memory mo dule (3) down, applying pr essure to both the left an d right edges of the memo ry module, until the reten tion clips snap i nto place. CAUTION: To prevent damage to the memory module, b e sure that you do not bend the memory module.
13. Slide the release latch to the left (5) to secure the service cover. 14. Replace the battery. 15. Connect th e AC power and an y external devices to the co mputer.
Updating programs and drivers HP recommends that you up date your prog rams and driver s on a regular basis with the la test versions. Go to http://www.hp.com/ support to download the l atest versions. You can also register to receive automatic upd ate notifications when they beco me available.

Note the following when backing up: ● Store personal files in the Docu men ts lib rar y, an d b a ck it up re gu larly. ● Back up temp lates that are stored in thei r associated programs. ● Save custo mized settings that ap pear in a window , toolbar, or menu bar by ta king a screen shot of your settings.
CAUTION: Using Startup Repair comp letely erases h ard drive contents and reformats the hard drive. All files you ha v e cr ea te d and any soft w a re installed on the computer are permane ntly removed.
CAUTION: Using a Windows 7 operating system DVD co mpletely erases hard drive conte n t s an d reformats the hard d rive. All files you have created and any software insta lled on the computer are permanently removed.
You can back up your i nformation to an optional ex ternal hard drive, a network drive , o r discs . Note the following when backing up: ● Store personal files in the Docu men ts f older, and back it up r eg ularly. ● Back up temp lates that are stored in thei r associated programs.

9 Specifications ● Input power Input power The power information in this section may be helpfu l if you plan to travel internation ally with the computer.
