Cables and connectors CAUTION: When servicing the computer, be sure that c ables are placed in their prop er locations during the reassembly p rocess. Improp er cable placem ent can damage the co mputer. Cables must be handle d with extreme care to avoid damage.
Grounding guidelines Electrostatic discharge damage Electronic componen ts are sensit ive to electrostatic d ischarge (ESD). Circu itry design and struc ture determine the deg ree of sensitiv ity.
Packaging and transporting guidelines Follow these groun ding guidelines when packaging and transp orting equipment: ● To avoid hand contact, transport products in static-safe tubes, bags, or boxes. ● Protect ESD-sensitive parts an d assemblies wi th conduct ive or approv ed containe rs or packaging.
Equipment guidelines Grounding equi pment must include either a wrist stra p or a foot strap at a grou nded workstation. ● When seated, wear a wrist strap connected to a grounded syste m. Wrist straps are flexibl e straps with a minimu m of one megohm ±10% resi stance in the ground co rds.
Component replacement procedures This chapter provides removal an d replacement procedures. There are as many as 7 8 screws, in 8 different sizes, that mu st be removed, replac ed, or loosened when servicing the computer. Make specia l note of each screw size and location during remova l and replacement.

3. To replace the hard drive bracket, re move the four Phillip s 3.0×3.0 screws (1) that secure the hard drive bracket to the hard d rive. 4. Pull the bracket (2 ) straight up to remove it from th e hard drive. 5. To replace the hard drive adapter, remove the Phillip s panhead 2.

6. Remove the optical drive bracket (2) . Reverse the abov e procedure to re assemble and insta ll the optical drive. 42 Chapter 4 Remova l and replacement procedures.

3. Remove the WLAN module (4) by pulling it away from the slot at an angle. CAUTION: To prevent an unresponsive system, repl ace the wireless module only with a wireless module authorized for u s e in the computer by the governmental agency that regulates wireless devices in your country or region.

2. Release the thre e zero insertion force (ZIF) con nectors (1) to which the ZIF ca bles are attach ed and disconnect the USB cable (2) , TouchPad cable (3) , and power button cab le (4) from the system board. 3. Remove the six Phillips 4.0 x 2.5 screws that secu re the top cover to the computer.
5. Remove the three Phillips 3.0 x 2. 0 screws in the battery bay, two Phillips 3.0 x 2.0 screws in the optical drive bay, and ten Phillips 6.0 x 2.5 on the base enclosure. NOTE: The four screws along the fron t edge also serve to secu re the speakers inside the base enclosure.

7. To replace any of th e display a ssembly internal components, re move the following screw covers and screws: (1) Two Mylar screw covers on the display bezel bottom edge (2) Two Phillips 4.0 x 2.5 sc rews The display screw covers a r e included i n the Display Rubber Kit, spare part nu mber 640882-001.
10. To replace the we bcam module (select mo dels on ly), lift the webcam module as far from the display enclosure as the webcam mod ule cable allows. 11. Disconnec t the webcam module ca ble (1) from the webcam module, and then remove the webcam module (2) .
13. Remove the display hin ge covers (2) . The display hinge covers ar e available using spare part number 640887-0 01. Reverse this proc edure to install the display hinge covers. 14. To replace the display panel, re move five Phillips 4.0 x 2.5 screws (1) that secure the display panel to the display enclosure.
16. To replace the display hinges, remove the two Phillips PM 3.0 x 2.0 screws (1) that secure each hinge to the display panel. 17. Remove the display hin ges (2) from the display panel. The display hinges are available using spare part number 6 39511-001.
20. To remove the displa y cable from the display panel, lift the tape (1) , and disconnect the cable (2) . Then, gently peel the cable away from the display panel (3) .
System board NOTE: The system board spare part kit includes UM A or discrete graphics subsystem memory and replacement thermal material . Description Spare part num ber For use in Intel HM55 UMA compu.
3. Move the optical drive connector board (2) to the right, and then lift it up to disconne ct it from the system board. Reverse this proc edure to install the o ptical drive connector board. 4. Remove the three Phi llips 3.0 x 2.0 screws (1) that secure the system board to the computer.
5. Lift the system board (2) from the right edge and pull it aw ay from the base enclosure at an angle. For AMD computer models, se e the following image.
When replacing the system board, be sure that the following components are removed from the defective system board and installe d on the replacement system board: ● Fan/heat si nk assembly (see Fan/heat sink assembly on page 70 ) ● Processor (see Processor on page 74 ) Reverse the disassembly procedu r e to install the system bo ard.

5. Remove the fan/ heat sink assembly (4) by lifting it straight up. NOTE: Steps 6 throug h 10 apply only to computer mode ls equipped with AMD proce ssors. 6. Turn the system board right-side up, with the front toward you. 7. Disconnect the fan cable from the system board (1) .
10. Remove the fa n/heat sink assembly (4) by lifting straight u p . Each time the fan/heat sink as sembly is removed, the thermal material mu st be thoroughly clean ed from the system board at locations (1) and (2) , from the fan/ heat sink assemb ly at locations (3) and (5) , and from the processor (4) .
After applying fresh thermal paste to the components, re verse the above proc edure to install the fan/ heat sink assembly. Component replacement procedures 73.

6 Setup Utility (BIOS) Setup Utility, or Basic In put/Output System (BIOS), controls co mmunication between all the input and output devices on the system (such as disk drives , display, keyboard, mous e, and printer).
Navigating and selectin g in Setup Utility Because Setup Utility is not Wind ows based, it does not support the TouchP ad. Navigation and selection are by keystroke.
Updating the BIOS Updated versions of the BIOS may be available on the HP Web site . Most BIOS update s on the HP Web site are package d in compressed files cal led SoftPaqs . Some download packa ges contain a file n a med Read me.txt, which contai ns information regarding installing and troubleshooting the file.
Downloading a BIOS update CAUTION: To reduce the risk of damage to the computer or an unsuccessful installation, downlo ad and install a BIOS update only when the computer is connected to reli able external power using the AC adapter.
7 Backup and recovery ● Restore ● Creating restore media ● Performing a system restore ● Backing up and re covering your inform ation Your computer includes t ools provided by the operating system and HP to help you safeguard your information and restore it if ever needed.
Restore In the event of hard drive failure, to restore your system to its factory image you will need a set of recovery discs or a recovery flash drive that you can create using HP Recovery Manager. HP recommends that you use this softwa re to create either a set of re covery discs or a recovery flash drive immediately afte r software setu p.
Performing a system restore HP Recovery Manager software a llows you to repair or re store the computer to its original factory state. HP Recovery Manager works from recovery di scs, a reco very flash drive, or fr om a dedicated recovery partition (se lect models only) on the hard drive.
3. Press f9 at system bootup. 4. Select the optical dr ive or the flash d rive. 5. Follow the on-screen instructions. 88 Chapter 7 Backup an d recovery.
Changing the computer boot order To change the boot or der for recovery discs: 1. Restart the computer. 2. Press esc while the computer is re starting, and then press f9 fo r boot options. 3. Select Internal CD/DVD ROM Drive from the boot option s window.
To create a scree n shot: 1. Display the screen you want to save. 2. Copy the screen image: To copy only the ac tive window, p ress alt + fn + prt sc . To copy the entire screen, press fn + prt sc . 3. Open a word-processing document, and th en select Edit > Paste .
Using Windows system restore points A system restore point allows you to save and name a snapshot of your hard drive at a specific point in time. You can then recove r back to that po int if you want to reverse subsequent changes.
8 Power cord set requirements The wide range input fe ature of the co mputer permits it to ope rate from any line voltag e from 100 to 120 volts AC or from 220 to 240 volts AC. The 3-conductor powe r cord set included with t he computer meets the requirements for use in the country or region where the e quipment is purchased.

9 Recycling Battery When a battery has reached the end of its useful life, d o not dispose of the battery in genera l household waste. Follo w the local laws and regulati ons in your area for computer b attery disposal. Display WARNING! The backlight contains mercury.
Perform the following ste ps to di sassemble the display assembly: 1. Remove all screw covers (1) and screws (2 ) that secure the display bezel to the display assembly. 2. Lift up and out on the inside edges of the b ezel on the left side (1) , the top and bot tom (2) , and the right side (3) until th e bezel disengages from the d isplay assembly.
4. Remove the two screws (1) that secure each hinge to the display enclosure and lift up to remove the display hinge covers (2) . 5. Remove all screws (1) that secure the display panel a ssembly to the display enclosure. 6. Remove the display panel assembly (2) from the displa y enclosure.
7. Turn the display pa nel assembly upside down and remove all screws that secure the display panel frame to the d isplay panel. 8. Use a sharp-edg ed tool to cut the tape (1) that secures the sides of the display panel to the display panel frame. 9. Remove the display panel frame (2) from the display panel.
14. Remove the backlight cables (1) from the clip (2) in the display pa nel. 15. Turn the display pane l upside down. 16. Remove the backlight frame from th e display panel. WARNING ! The backlight contains mercury. Exercise caution when removing an d handling the backlight to avoid damag ing this compon ent a nd causing exposure to the mercury.
