Component Description (2) TouchPad on/off button Turns the TouchPad on an d off. Quickly double-tap the TouchPad on/off button to turn the TouchPad on and off. (3) Left TouchPad button Functions like the left button on an exter nal mouse. (4) TouchPad zone Moves the pointer and selects or activates items on the screen.
Buttons Component Description Power button ● When the computer is off, press the button to turn on the computer. ● When the computer is on, press the button briefly to initiate Sleep. ● When the computer is in the Sleep state, press the button briefly to exit Sleep.
Keys Component Description (1) esc key Displays system information when pressed in combin ation with the fn key. (2) fn key Displays system information when pressed in combin ation with the esc key. (3) Windows logo key Displays the Windows Start menu.

Right side Component Description (1) Optical drive Reads and writes to an optical disc. (2) Optical drive light ● Green: The optical drive is being accessed. ● Off: The optical drive is idle. (3) Optical drive eject button Ejects the optical disc.
Left side Component Description (1) External monitor port Connects an external VGA monitor or projector . (2) Vents (2) Enable airflow to cool internal components. NOTE: The computer fan starts up automatically to cool internal components and preve nt overheating.
Component Description (9) Power light ● White: The computer is on. ● Blinking white: The computer is in the Sleep state. ● Off: The computer is off or in Hibernation.
Display Component Description (1) WLAN antennas (2)* Send and receive wireless signals to co mmunicate with wireless local area networks (WLAN). (2) Webcam light On: The webcam is in use. (3) Webcam Records video and captures still photog raphs. To use the webcam, select Sta rt > All Programs > Cy berLink YouCam > C yberLink YouCam .
Bottom Component Description (1) Battery bay Holds the battery. (2) Battery release latch Releases the battery from the battery bay. (3) Vents (5) Enable airflow to cool internal components. NOTE: The computer fan starts up automatically to cool internal components and preve nt ov erheating.
3N e t w o r k i n g ● Using an Internet service provider (ISP) ● Connecting to a wireless network NOTE: Internet hardware and software features vary d epe nding on computer model a nd your location.
Using an Internet service provider (ISP) Before you ca n connect to the In ternet, you must establish an ISP account. Conta ct a local ISP to purchase Internet service and a modem. The ISP wil l help set up the mo dem, install a network cable t o connect your wireless computer to the modem, and test the Internet service.
Connecting to an existing WLAN 1. Turn on the computer. 2. Be sure that the WLAN d evice is on. 3. Click the netwo rk icon in the no tification area, at the far right of th e taskbar. 4. Select a network to connect to. 5. Click Connec t . 6. If required, enter the secu rity key.
Configuring a wireless router For help in setting up a WLAN, refer to t he information pr ovided by your rout er manufacture r or your ISP. The Windows operating system also provides tools to help you set up a new wi reless network.

Using the keyboard Using the action keys Action keys are customize d actions that are assigned to specific keys at the top o f the keyboard. The icons on the f1 through f12 keys repres ent the action key functions. To use an action ke y, press and hold this key to activate the assig ned function .
f10 Increases speaker volume incrementa lly when you hold dow n this key. f11 Mutes or restores speaker sound. f12 Turns the wireless feature on or off. NOTE: This key does not establish a wireless connection. To establish a wireless connection, a wireless network must also be set up.
Using pointing devices NOTE: In addition to the pointing devices included wi th your computer, you can use an external USB mouse (purchased separately) by con necting it to one of th e USB ports on the comp uter.
Navigating To move the pointe r, slide one finger across the Touc hPa d in the direction yo u want the pointer to go. Selecting Use the left and ri ght TouchPad bu ttons like th e correspondin g buttons on a n external mouse.
Using TouchPad gestures The TouchPad sup ports a variety of gestures. To use TouchPad gestures, pl ace two fingers on the TouchPad at the same time. NOTE: TouchPad gestures are not su pported in all progra ms. To view the demonst ration of a g esture: 1.
Pinching/Zooming Pinching allows you to zoom in or out on images o r text. ● Zoom in by pla cing two fingers togethe r on the Tou c hPad, and then moving them apart. ● Zoom out by placing two fin gers apart on th e TouchPa d, and then moving the m together.

CAUTION: Removing a battery th at is the sole power source for th e computer can cause l oss of information. To prevent loss o f information, save yo ur work and initiate Hiber nation or shut down the computer thro ugh Windows before re moving the battery.
Replacing or upgrading the hard drive CAUTION: To prevent information loss or an unresponsive system: Shut down the computer before re moving the hard drive from the hard driv e bay. Do not remove the hard drive wh ile the computer is on, in the Sleep state, o r in Hibernation.
6. Disconnect the h ard drive cable (1) , and then lift the hard dr ive (2) out of the hard drive bay. 28 Chapter 5 Mainte nance.
Installing a hard drive 1. Lower the hard drive (1) into the hard drive bay, and then connect the hard drive cable (2) . 2. Align the tabs on the hard drive cover (1) with the notches on the computer. 3. Close the co ver (2) . 4. Tighten the hard drive cover screws (3) .
5. Replace the battery. 6. Reconnect AC power and extern a l devices to the computer. 7. Turn on the computer. Adding or replacing memory modules The computer has two memo ry module slots.
5. Lift the memory modu le compartment cover (2) away from the comp uter. 6. If you are replacing a memory module, remove the existing memory module: a. Pull away the retention clips (1) on each sid e of the memo ry module. The memory module tilts up.
7. Insert a new memory module: CAUTION : To prevent da mage to the memory mo dule, hold th e memory module by the edges only. Do not touch the components on the memory module. a. Align the notched edge (1) of the memory module with the tab in the memory module slot.
10. Tighten the memory modul e compartment cover screws (3) . 11. Replace th e batter y. 12. Reconnect AC power and external devi ces to the computer. 13.

Restore In the event of hard drive failure, to restore your system to its factory image you will need a set of recovery discs or a recovery flash drive that you can crea te using HP Recovery Man ager. HP recommends that you use this software to create eith er a set of reco very discs or a recovery flash drive immediately after software setu p.
Performing a system restore HP Recovery Manager softwar e allows you to repai r or restore the computer to its origin al factory state. HP Recovery Manager works from reco very discs o r a recovery flash drive, or from a dedi cated recovery partition (selec t models only) on the h ard drive.
3. Press f9 at system bootup. 4. Select the optic al drive or the f lash drive. 5. Follow the on-screen instructions. Changing the computer boot order To change th e boot order f or recovery discs: 1. Restart the computer. 2. Press esc while the computer is restarting, and th en press f9 for boot options.
To create a screen shot: 1. Display the screen you want to save. 2. Copy the scree n image: To copy only the active wi ndow, press alt + prt sc . To copy the entire screen, press prt sc . 3. Open a word-processing do cument, and then select Edit > Paste .
Create a system restore point 1. Select Start > Control Panel > System and Secu rity > System . 2. In the left pane, c lick System protectio n .
