4 Removal and replacement procedures preliminary requirements Tools required You will need the following tools to comple te the removal and replacement procedures: ● Flat-bladed screwdriver ● Magn.
they cannot be caught or snagged by parts bein g removed or replaced. Handle flex cables with extreme care; thes e cables tear easi ly. Drive handling CAUTION: Drives are fr agile componen ts that must be handl ed with care.
CAUTION: To prevent damage to the computer when you are removing or instal ling internal components, observe these precaution s: Keep components in their e lectr ostatic-safe containers until you are ready to install them. Before touching an electr onic compone nt, discha rge static elec tr icity by using the guidelines described in this section.
Packaging and transporting guidelines Follow these grounding guidelines when packagin g and transporting equipment: ● To avoid hand co ntact, transport pr oducts in static-safe tube s, ba gs, or boxes . ● Protect ESD-sensitive part s and assemblies with co nductive or approved co ntainers or packaging.
Equipment guidelines Grounding equipment must include either a wrist st rap or a foot strap at a grounded workstation. ● When seated, wear a wrist strap connected to a gr ounded system. Wrist straps are flexible straps with a minimum of one megohm ±10% resistance in the ground cords.
5 Removal and replacement procedures for Customer Self- Repair parts CAUTION: The Customer Self-Repair program is not availa ble in all locations. Installing a part not supported by the Customer Se lf-Repair program may void your warranty . Check your warranty to determine if Customer Self-Repair is supported in your location.
Before removing the servic e cove r, follow these s teps: 1. Turn off the computer. If you are u nsure whethe r the computer is off or in Hibernation, turn the computer on, and then shut it down through the operating system. 2. Disconnect the power from the computer by un plugging the power cord from the computer.

3. Insert a screw driver or similar thin tool into th e keyboard release hole, and then press on the back of the keyboard until the keyboard disengages from the computer. 4. Position the computer right-side up with the front toward you. 5. Lift the rear edge of the keyboa rd upward.
6. To remove the keyboard from HP EliteB ook 840/HP ZBoo k14 models: a. Swing the keyboard up and forward (1) until it rests upside down on the palm rest . b. Disconnect the main keyboard cable from the zero insertion forc e (ZIF) connector (2) on the system board.
e. Remove the keyboard (5) . Reverse this procedure to install the keyboard. Component re placement procedures 65.
6 Removal and replacement procedures for Authorized Service Provider parts CAUTION: Components described in this chapter should only be accessed by an authorized servic e provider.

2. Remove the bezel from the display assembly (4) . 3. Remove the four Philli ps PM2.0×3.0 screws (1) that secure the display panel to the display enclosure.
5. On the back of the display panel, lift the tape that secures the display ca ble to the display panel (1) , and the disconnect the display cable from the p anel (2) . 6. Lift the display panel fr om the display enclosure. 7. If it is necessary to replac e the webcam/microphone module: a.
c. Remove the module (3) from the display enclosure. (The module is attached to the display enclosure with double-sided tape.) Reverse this proc edure to reassem ble and install the display pa nel components .
Base enclosure Base enclosur e removal procedur es for HP EliteBook 84 0/HP ZBook 14 models and HP Elit eBook 15 models are in separated in the following sections.
2. Remove the seven rubber scre w covers from the screws ou tside of the service cover. NOTE: The eight screws outside of the serv ice cover also ha ve rubber covers. 3. Remove the 16 Torx T8M2.5 ×5.0 screws that secure the base enclosure to the computer.
4. Remove the Phillips PM2.0×8.0 screw (1) near the media card reader and the six Phillips PM2.0×5.0 broadhead screws (2) inside the battery bay that secure the bas e enclosure to the comp uter. 5. Lift the bas e enclosure off the comp uter. Reverse this procedure to install the base enclosure.
Base enclosure (HP EliteBook 850 models) Description Spare p art number Base enclosure for use only on HP El iteBook 850 models (includes RJ-45 door with spring) 730813-001 Before removing the base en closure, follow these s teps: 1. Turn off the computer.
2. Remove the seven rubber scre w covers from the screws ou tside of the service cover. 3. Remove the 21 Torx T8M2.5 ×5.0 screws that secure the base enclosure to the computer.
4. Remove the Phillips PM2.0×8.0 screw (1) near the media card reader and the five Phillips PM2.0×5.0 broadhead screws (2) inside the battery bay that secure the bas e enclosure to the comp uter. 5. Lift the bas e enclosure off the comp uter. Reverse this procedure to install the base enclosure.

2. Following the 1, 2, 3, 4 sequence stamped into the heat sink, loosen the four captive Philllips screws (1) – (4) that secure the heat sink to the system board , and then remove the heat sink (5) .

3. Slide the power toward the insi de of the top cover, and then lift it off the top cover (3) . Reverse this procedure to in stall the power button board.

3. Slide the bracket from atop the fingerprint reader board (2) , and the remove the fingerprint reader board (3) from the compute r. Reverse this procedure to install the fingerprint reader assembly.

Remove the system board: 1. Position the computer upright and open as far as possible. 2. Release the ZIF connecto r (1) to which the fingerprint re ader cable is connected, and then disconnect the finger print reader cable (2) from the system board. 3.
9. Note the routing location of the antenna cables (7) when removing them. 10. Remove the three Phillips PM2.5×5.0 screw s th at secure the system board to the top cover.
12. Remove the system board (2) by sliding it up and to the left at an angle. Reverse this procedure to ins tall the system board. 94 Cha pter 6 Removal and replacement proced ures for Authorized Serv.
Speaker assembly Description Spare p art number Speaker assembly (includes cable) 730798-001 Before removing the speaker assembly, follow these steps: 1. Turn off the computer. If you are u nsure whethe r the computer is off or in Hibernation, turn the computer on, and then shut it down through the operating system.
3. Remove the speaker assembly (2) from the top cover. Reverse this procedure to install the speaker assembly. 96 Cha pter 6 Removal and replacement proced ures for Authorized Service Provider parts.
Display assembly NOTE: HP EliteBoo k 840 models offer both touch and non-touch disp lays. Non-touch displays are spared at the subcomp onent level only.
2. Release the wirele ss antenna cables (2) from the routing channel attached to the system board. 3. Remove the four To rx TM2.5×6. 0 screws (1 ) that secure the display panel to the computer. 4. Rotate the display hinges upwa rd to an angle (2) until the top cover is free for removal.
7. Remove the bezel from the display assembly (4) . The display bezel is available using spare pa rt number 730952-001 for HP E liteBook 840 models, 730953- 001 for HP ZBook 14 model s, and 730814-0 01 for HP Elite Book 850 models . NOTE: In these steps, the display assembly will no t be connected to the computer as shown in the illustration.
