Cables and and pointing stick con nectors CAUTION: When servicing the computer, be sure that c ables are placed in their prop er locations during the reassembly p rocess. Improp er cable placem ent can damage th e computer. Cables must be handle d with extreme care to avo id damage.
Grounding guidelines Electrostatic discharge damage Electronic componen ts are sensit ive to electrost atic discharge (ESD). Circuitry design and st ructure determine the degre e of sensitivit y.
Packaging and transporting guidelines Follow these groun ding guidelines whe n packaging and transp orting equipment: ● To avoid hand an d pointing stick con tact, transpor t products in static-saf e tubes, bags, or boxes. ● Protect ESD-sen sitive parts and assemblie s with conductive o r approved and p ointing stick containers or packagin g.
Equipment guidelines Grounding equi pment must include eith er a wrist strap o r a foot strap at a grou nded workstation. ● When seated, wear a wrist strap connected to a grounded system. Wrist straps are flexibl e straps with a minimu m of one megohm ±1 0% resistance in the g round and pointing stick cords.
Component replacement procedures This chapter provides removal an d replacement proced ures. There are as many as 98 screws and screw locks that must be remo ved, replaced, or loosened when servicing the computer. Make special n ote of each screw and screw lock size and location during removal and replacement.

Computer feet The computer feet (not illustrate d) are adhesive-backed rubber pads . The feet are included in the base enclosure spare part kit, sp are part number 68 8765-001. Th e rubber feet that attach to the base enclosure in the loca tions illustrated below.
SIM Before removing the SIM, follow these steps: 1. Shut down the co mputer. If you are unsure whether th e computer is off or in Hibe rnation, turn the computer on, and th en shut it down thr ough the operating system. 2. Disconnect all ext ernal devices connected to the computer.
3. Disconnect th e power from the c omputer by firs t unplugging the power cord from the AC outlet and then unpl ugging the AC adap ter from the comput er. 4. Remove the batt ery (see Battery on page 51 ). Remove the service access cover: 1. Position the computer upside down on a flat surface, with the front toward you.
Primary hard drive NOTE: The hard drive bracket is included in the Ha rd Drive Hardware Kit, spare part number 642774-001. Description Spare part number 750 GB, 7200-rpm SATA hard drive 633252-001 500.
8. Lift the Smart Card reader to th e upright position (2) . 9. Loosen the Phillips M2.5 x10.5 captive screws (1) that secure th e hard drive to the co mputer. 10. Grasp the tab on the h ard dr ive and slide the hard drive (2) to disconnect it from the system board.
b. Lift the bracket (2) straight up to remove it from the hard drive. Reverse this procedure to rea sse mble and install the h ard drive. Secondary hard drive NOTE: The hard drive bracket is included in the Ha rd Drive Hardware Kit, spare part number 642774-001.
3. Grasp the tab and slide the hard drive (2) to the right. Lift the hard driv e up to remove it fro m the hard drive bay (3) . 4. If it is nece ssary to remove the hard drive bracket, fo llow these steps: a. Remove the four Phi llips M3.0x3.0 screws (1) that secure the hard drive br acket to the har d drive.

9. Slide the Smart Card reader b ack toward the h inges on the Smart Card reader cover, and remove the Smar t Card reader board (2) . Reverse this procedure to rea ssemble an d install the Sma rt Card reader. Bluetooth module NOTE: The Bluetooth modu le spare part kit does not include a Bluetooth module ca ble.
Remove the Blueto oth module: 1. Remove the Bluetoot h module cover. 2. Gently pry the Bluetooth module away from th e adhesive in the b ase enclosure and lift the Bluetooth module (1) . 3. Disconnect th e Bluetooth module fr om the Bluetooth cable (2) , and remove the module.

5. If it is necessary to replace the optical drive bracket: a. Position the optical dr ive with the rear toward you. b. Remove the three Ph illips M2.0×3.0 screws (1) that secure th e optical drive bracket to the optical drive. c. Remove the optical drive bracket (2) .
c. Firmly pull ou tward on the bezel to remove the be zel from the optical drive tray. Reverse this procedure to rea ssemble an d install the optical drive. Upgrade bay hard drive NOTE: The hard drive bracket is included in the Ha rd Drive Hardware Kit, spare part number 642774-001.
2. Remove the four Phillips PM3.0×3.0 screws that secure the upgra de bay hard driv e carrier to the computer. 3. Loosen the 2 Phillips captive screws (1) that secure the hard drive to the carrier.
A computer having a system board with spare part number 690034-001 or 688745-001 has two memory slots (primary memory slots). When addin g or replacing memory modules, slot 1 must be populated before slot 2 is populated.
Reverse this procedure to in stall a primary me mory module. Expansion memory module NOTE: Expansion memory slots are locate d in a co mp artment on the botto m of the computer. A computer having a system board with spare part number 690034-001 or 688745-001 has two memory slots, which are called primary memory sl ots in this MSG.
2. Remove the expan sion memory modu le (2) by pulling the module away from the slot at an angle. NOTE: Memory modules a re designed with a n otch (3) to prevent incorrect install ation into the expansion memory modu le slots. Reverse this procedure to in sta ll an expansion memory module.

5. Remove the service access cover (see Service access cover on page 52 ). 6. Remove the optical drive (see Optical driv e on page 63 ) or upgrade bay hard drive (see Upgrade bay hard drive on page 66 ). NOTE: The optical drive or hard d riv e carrier in the upgrade bay must be remo ved in order to remove the keyboard.
4. Insert a small tool at an an gle through the ho le in the optical dr ive bay at an angle to push out the top edge of the keyboard. This gives you access to the back of the ke yboard and release s the top edge of the keyboard. NOTE: Make sure that the optical drive or upgr ade hard d rive have been remo ved before performing this proc edure.
10. Release the pointing sti ck ZIF connector (3) an d lift the cable (4) to release it. Reverse this procedure to insta ll the keyboard. Fan/graphics board heat sink assembly NOTE: The fan/graphics board he at sink assembli es in clude replacement ther mal material.
5. Remove the service access cove r (see Service access cover). 6. Remove the optical drive (see Optical driv e on page 63 ) or upgrade bay hard drive (see Upgrade bay hard drive on page 66 ). 7. Remove the keyboard (see Keyboard on page 71 ). 8. Remove the top cover (see Top cover on page 83 ) 9.
2. Lift the heat sink/fan assembly (2) straight up to remove it. NOTE: Due to the adhe sive quality of the thermal material locate d between the fa n/graphics board heat sink assembly an d graphics board co mponents, it ma y be necessary to mo ve the graphics board heat sink from side to si de to detach it from the system board.
Display bezel Description Spare part nu mber Display bezel for use with computer models without a webcam 688763-001 Before removing the display beze l, follow these steps: 1. Shut down the co mputer. If you are unsure whether th e computer is off or in Hibe rnation, turn the computer on, and th en shut it down thr ough the operating system.
3. Flex the inside ed ges of the top edg e (3) , the left and right side s (4) , and the bottom edge (5) of the display beze l until the bezel disen gages from the display enclosure and then remove the bezel (6) . Reverse this procedure to insta ll the display bezel.
3. Remove the 1 Phillips screws (3) that secure the d isplay panel bracke ts to the hinge pipe. 4. Slide the hinge pipe to the ri ght (1) and remove the hinge pip e (2) . NOTE: Make sure you pu ll back the antenn a cables when removing the hinge pipe.
Display panel cable Description Spare part number Display panel cable (select models only) 688761-001 To remove the disp lay panel cable: ▲ Release the adhesive tape that secures the display pane l cable to the display panel (1) . Disconnect th e cable (2) , and then remove the cable (3) .
▲ Remove the 4 screws that secu re each hinge a ssembly to the pan el (1) , and then remove the hinge brackets (2) . Webcam module Description Spare part number Webcam module with microphone 688752-001 Before removing the webcam modu le, follow these ste ps: 1.
Remove the webcam module: 1. Lift the WLAN antenna cab les (1) , and then remove the WWAN antenn a cables (2) . 2. Remove the webcam cable (1) from the hinges and then di sconnect the webcam ca ble from the display enclosure (2) . 3. Remove the webcam modul e from the display e nclosure (3) .
Before removing the top cover, follow these steps: 1. Shut down the co mputer. If you are unsure whether th e computer is off or in Hibe rnation, turn the computer on, and th en shut it down thr ough the operating system. 2. Disconnect all ext ernal devices connected to the computer.
3. Remove the two Phillips M2.5x3 screws in the optical driv e/upgrade drive bay (1) and the four Phillips M2.5x3.0 screws inside the battery bay (2) . 4. Disconnect the power bu tton board cable (1) . Disconne ct the Tou chPad cable on the left (2) and the right sides (3) .
7. Grasp the top cover by the hole in the optical di sk drive/upgrad e drive bay and li ft up the front edge of the top cover (1) . 8. Remove the top cover fr om the base enclosure (2) .
d. Release the TouchPad from the front right side clip (3) and then remove the Tou chPad from the top cover. Reverse this procedure to in stall the top cover an d TouchPad. NOTE: In revers ing this proc edure, make sure that the display latch assemb ly actuator lines up correctly with the top cover to a void damaging any components.

2. Remove the tape (1) that secures the WLAN and WWAN cables to the system board. (2) . 3. Turn the computer right side up, facing you. Feed the WLAN and WWAN cables thro ugh the hole next to the keyboard screw (1) , and then lift th e cable free of th e routing areas (2) .
5. Disconnect th e display panel cab le (1) , and then remove the cable (2) . NOTE: Make sure all cab les are freed from the clips i n the routing channel. 6. Turn the unit aroun d, and then remove the Torx M2.5 x7.0 screws (1) that secure the display hinges to the base enclosure.
7. Position the computer with the rear towa rd you. Lift the rear hinges a nd remove. 8. Remove the two 6 millimeter Torx screws securing the displa y panel to the base enclosure (1) `, and then remove th e display panel (2) . Reverse this procedure to rea ssemble and to install the displ ay assembly.
Before removing the power button board, follow th ese steps: 1. Shut down the co mputer. If you are unsure whether th e computer is off or in Hibe rnation, turn the computer on, and th en shut it down thr ough the operating system. 2. Disconnect all ext ernal devices connected to the computer.
Before removing the application butto n board, follow the se steps: 1. Shut down the co mputer. If you are unsure whether th e computer is off or in Hibe rnation, turn the computer on, and th en shut it down thr ough the operating system. 2. Disconnect all ext ernal devices connected to the computer.
Before removing the fingerprint reader, fo llow these steps: 1. Shut down the co mputer. If you are unsure whether th e computer is off or in Hibe rnation, turn the computer on, and th en shut it down thr ough the operating system. 2. Disconnect all ext ernal devices connected to the computer.
