4 Removal and replacement procedures Preliminary replacement requirements Tools required You will need the following tools to comple te the removal and re placement procedures: ● Flat-bla ded screw .
Cables and connectors CAUTION: When servicing the computer, be sure that c ables are placed in their prop er locations during the reassembly p rocess. Improp er cable placem ent can damage th e computer. Cables must be handle d with extreme care to avoid damage.
Grounding guidelines Electrostatic discharge damage Electronic componen ts are sensit ive to electrost atic discharge (ESD). Circuitry design and st ructure determine the deg ree of sensitiv ity.
Packaging and transporting guidelines Follow these groun ding guidelines when packaging and transp o rting equipment: ● To avoid hand contact, transport products in static-safe tubes, bags, or boxes. ● Protect ESD-sensitive parts an d assemblies wi th conduct ive or approv ed containe rs or packaging.
Equipment guidelines Grounding equi pment must include either a wrist stra p or a foot strap at a grou nded workstation. ● When seated, wear a wrist strap connected to a grounded syste m. Wrist straps are flexibl e straps with a minimu m of one megohm ±1 0% resi stance in the ground co rds.
Component replacement procedures This chapter provides removal an d replacement procedures. There are as many as 95 screws and screw locks, in 15 different sizes, that must be removed, replaced, or loosened when servicing the computer . Make special note of each screw and screw lo ck size and location du ring removal and repl acement.
3. Tilt the battery up ward (2) , and remove it from the battery bay (3) . Install the battery by inserting it into the battery bay until you hear a click.
Using the optional security screw Use the optional security screw to lock the service doo r to the bottom of the computer. When not in use the security scr ew can be stored insid e the battery bay . Remove the battery: To use the security screw: 1. Remove the battery.

SIM NOTE: This section applies on ly to computer models with WWAN capability. NOTE: The SIM is provided by the en d-user as a security measure for the WWAN modul e. The SIM should be remove d, placed into a static-dissipa tive container, a nd then replac ed when the co mputer is reassembled.

4. Remove the optical drive (3) from the computer. Reverse this procedure to install an optical drive. Component replacement procedures 61.
Hard dr ive NOTE: All hard drive spare part kits incl ude a hard drive bracket and screws. Description Spare part num ber 750-GB, 7200-rpm hard drive 633252-001 750-GB, 5400-rpm hard drive 634250-001 .
3. Pull the Mylar tab on the hard drive (2) toward the side of the computer to disengage the hard drive from the connector, a nd then lift th e hard drive o u t of the hard drive bay. NOTE: Model 4540s sho wn. 4. If it is necessary to re place the hard dr ive cover, lift the Mylar tab to unlock it.
6. Lift the top of the Mylar cover (2) from the drive, and then remove the cover from the hard drive (3) . Reverse this procedure to rea sse mble and install the h ard drive. Memory modules NOTE: Primary and expansion memory is insta lled in a stacked configuration in the bottom of the computer.
7. Click the link for the most recent BIOS. 8. Click the Download button, and then fo llow the on-screen instructions. Before removing the memory module, follow these step s: 1. Shut down the co mputer. If you are unsure whether th e computer is off or in Hibe rnation, turn the computer on, and th en shut it down thr ough the operating system.
WWAN module CAUTION: The WWAN module and the WL AN module are not interchangea ble. 4. Remove the WWAN module (3) by pulling the module away from the slot at an angle. NOTE: WWAN modules are d esigned with a not ch to prevent incorrect insertion.
WLAN/Bluetooth combo card The computer uses a card that provides both WLAN and Bluetooth functionality. CAUTION: The WLAN module and the WWAN module are not interchangeable . Description Spare part num ber Atheros 9485GN 802.11b/g/n 1x1 WiFi and 3012 Bluetoo th 4.
4. Remove the WLAN module (3) by pulling the module away from the slot at an angle. NOTE: WLAN modules a re designed with a n otch to prevent incorrect insertion.
Keyboard NOTE: For a detailed list o f available keyb oards, see Sequential part number listing on page 41 . Description Spare part num ber Keyboard for use in 4540s models without Windows 8 683491-xx.
3. For model 4440s/4441 s, remove the two Phillip s PM2.5×6.0 screws that secure the keyboard to the computer. 4. Position the computer right-side up with the front towar d you. 5. Open the compute r as far as possible. 6. Slide the keyboard do wnward toward the palm rest (1) .
8. Rotate the keyb oard until it rests on the palm re st (1) , and then disconnect the keybo a rd cable by lifting the keyboard connecto r latch (2) , and then d isconnecting the keyboard cable from the system board (3) . 9. Remove the keyboard. Reverse this procedure to insta ll the keyboard.
Heat shield Description Spare part num ber Heat shield for use in 4540s mod els 687696-001 Heat shield for use in 4440s/4441s mo dels 683497-001 Before removing the heat shield, follow these steps: 1.
6. Remove the heat shield from the computer (4) . 7. For model 4440s/4 441s, remove the three Phillips PM2.0×3.0 screws (1) that secure the heat shield to the computer. 8. Rotate t he top o f the sh ield upward (2) . 9. Lift the heat shield from the computer (3) .
Fan Description Spare part num ber Fan for use in 4540s models 683484-00 1 Fan for use in 4440s/4441s models 683651-001 Before removing the fan, follow these steps: 1. Shut down the co mputer. If you are unsure whether th e computer is off or in Hibe rnation, turn the computer on, and th en shut it down thr ough the operating system.
4. Remove the fan fro m the system board (3) . Reverse this procedure to insta ll the fan. NOTE: To prop erly ventilate the comput er, allow at le ast a 7.6-cm (3-in) clea rance on the l eft side of the computer. The computer uses an electric fan for ventilation.
Heat sink All heat sink spare part kits in clude replacement thermal material. Description Spare part num ber For use in 4540s mo dels: Heat sink for use in models with UMA graphics and a removable pr.
3. Lift the left side of the heat sink up at an angle (2) , and then pull it away from the side of the computer to remove it (3) . 4. To remove th e UMA heat sink, in t he order in dicated, loosen the four captive Phillips screws (1) that secure the heat sink to the system board.
NOTE: For UMA models, thoroughly clean thermal mate rial from the surface of the system board (1) and heat sink (2) each time you remove the heat sink. All heat sink and p rocessor spare part kits include thermal material. Reverse this procedure to insta ll the heat sink.
Processor NOTE: All processor spare part kits incl ude replacem ent thermal material. 2. For 4540s models, disconnect the follo wing cables from the system board: (1) Speaker ca ble (2) Function board/Power b utton board cable (3) Fingerprint reader bo ard cable 3. For 4440s/4441 models, disconnect the following cables from the system boa rd: (1) Function board/Power b utton board cable (2) Finger print reader board cable 4.
5. For 4540s models, remove the following screws that secure th e top cover to the computer: (1) 4 rubber screw covers fr om the corners of t he computer (2) 11 Torx T8M2.
6. For 4440s/4441s models, re move the following screws that secure the top cover to the computer: (1) 4 rubber screw covers fr om the corners of t he computer (2) 9 Torx T 8M2.
7. For 4540s models, remove the following screws that secure th e top cover to the computer: (1) 2 Phillips PM2.0×2.5 screws from the optical drive bay (2) 3 Phillips PM2.0×2.0 b r oadhead screws from the battery ba y 8. For 4440s/4441s models, re move the following screws that secure the top cover to the computer: (1) 3 Phillips PM2.
9. Position the computer upright. 10. For 4540s mod els, remove the tw o 2 Torx T8M2.5 ×6.0 screws screws that secure the top cover to the computer. 11. For 4440s/4441s models, remove the three 2 Torx T8M2.5 ×6.0 screws sc re ws that secure the top cover to the computer.
12. Turn the computer upright an d open it as far as possible. 13. Pry the top of the top co ver loose from the computer (1) . 14. Lift the top cover up slightly (2) , enough not to inadvertently di sconnect the touch pad cable from the system board. 15.
Fingerprint reader board NOTE: Fingerprint assembly spare part kits include cable, bracket, a nd screws. Description Spare part num ber Fingerprint reader board for use in 45 40s models 683485-001 Fingerprint reader board for use in 4440s/4441s models 683652-00 1 Before removing the fingerprint r eader board, follow these ste ps: 1.
4. Remove the read er and cable assemb ly from the top cover (4) . Reverse this procedure to in sta ll the fingerprint rea der board. 90 Chapter 4 Remova l and replacement procedures.
Speaker assembly NOTE: In 4540s models, th e speakers are mo unted to the bott om of the top cove r. NOTE: In 4440s/4441s models, th e speakers are mounted to the base enclo sure.
6. Lift the opposite end of each speaker away from the tab and up at an an gle, and then pull the speaker away from tab and up an d off the top cover (3) . 7. For model 4440s/4441 s, position the computer upright and op en as far as possible. 8. Disconnect th e speaker cable f rom the system bo ard (1) .
