2 Getting to know your computer Finding your hardware an d software information Locating hardware To find out what hardware is installed on your computer: 1. From the Start screen, type c , and then select Control Panel . 2. Select System and Security , and then in the System area, click Device Manage r .
Right side Component Description (1) Digital Media Slot Reads data from and writes data to digital memory cards such as Secure Digital (SD). (2) Audio-out (headphone) jack Connects opti onal powered ste reo speakers, headp hones, earbuds, a headset, or a television audio cable.
Component Description (1) Power connector Connects an AC adapter. (2) AC adapter light ● White: The AC adapter is connected and the battery is charged. ● Amber: The AC adapter is connected and the battery is charging. ● Off: The computer is using DC power.
Display Component Description (1) Internal display switch Turns off the display and initiates Sleep if the display is closed while the power is on. NOTE: The internal display switch is not visible from the outside of the computer. (2) WLAN antennas (2)* Send and receive wirele ss signals to communicate with wireless local area networks (WLAN).
Top TouchPad Component Description (1) TouchPad light ● On: The TouchPad is off. ● Off: The TouchPad is on. (2) TouchPad on/off button Turns the TouchPad on or off. (3) TouchPad zone Moves the on-screen pointer and selects or activates items on the s creen.
Lights Component Description (1) Power light ● White: The computer is o n. ● Blinking white: The computer is in the Standby mode, which is an energy-saving mode. The comp uter shuts off power to the display and other unneeded components. ● Off: The computer is off or in Hibernation.
Buttons Component Description (1) Power button ● When the computer is off, press the button to turn on the computer. ● When the computer is on, press the button briefly to initiate Sleep. ● When the computer is in the Sleep state, press the button briefly to exit Sleep.
Keys Component Description (1) esc key Displays system informatio n when pressed in combination with the fn key. (2) fn key Executes frequently used system functions when pressed in combination with the b key or the esc key. (3) Windows logo key Displays the Start screen.
Bottom Component Description (1) Battery bay Holds the battery. (2) SIM slot (select models only) Supports a wireless subscriber iden tity module (SIM). The SIM slot is located inside the battery bay. (3) Battery/service door latch Releases the battery from the battery bay and the service door from the comp uter.
Labels The labels affixed to the computer provid e inform ation you may need wh en you trouble shoot system problems or travel internationa lly with the comput er.
3 Connecting to a network Your computer can tr avel with you wh erever you go. But even at home, you can explor e the globe and access inform ation from millions of we bsites using your computer and a wire d or wireless network connection. This chapter will hel p you get connected to that world.
To use operating system controls: 1. From the Start screen, type network and sharing . 2. Click Settings , and then select Network and Sharin g Center from the options displayed.
Setting up a WLAN To set up a WLAN an d connect to the In ternet, you need the following eq uipment: ● A broadband modem (either DSL or cable) (1) and high-spee d Internet service purchased from an .
Connecting to a WLAN To connect to the WLAN, follow these steps: 1. Be sure that the WLAN device is on. If the device is on, the wireless light is on. If the wireless light is off, press the wireless button. NOTE: On some models, the wireless light is am ber when all wireless devices are off.
Connecting to a local area network (LAN) Use a LAN connecti on if you wan t to connect the comp uter d irectly to a rout er in your home (instead of working wirelessly), or if you wan t to connect to an exis ting network at your offic e. Connecting to a LAN requires an 8-pin, RJ-45 network cabl e.
4 Enjoying entertainment features Use your HP comput er as an enterta inment hub to socialize via the webcam, e njoy and mana ge your music, and download and watch movies.
Component Description (5) USB 2.0 ports (2) Connect optional USB devices. NOTE: For details about different types of USB ports, see Using a USB device on page 41 . (6) Audio-in (microphone) jack Connects an optional computer headset micro phone, stereo array microphone, or monaur al microphone.
Connecting headphones You can connect wired he adphones to the hea dphone jack on your co mputer. To connect wireless headpho nes or speakers to your comp uter, follo w the device manufa cturer's instructions. WARNING! To reduce the risk of personal inju ry, adjust the volume before putting on headphone s, earbuds, or a headset.
Using video Your HP computer is a po werful video de vice th at en ables you to watch streaming video from you r favorite websites and download video and movies to watch o n your computer, without needing to access a ne twork.
Connecting an HDMI TV or monitor To see the computer scre en image on a h igh-definit ion TV or monitor, connect the hig h-definition device according to the following instructions. To connect an HDMI device to your computer , you need an HDMI cable, sold sepa rately.
To return the audio stream to the computer speakers, follow these steps: 1. Tap or right-clic k the Speak ers icon in the n otification area, at the far right of the taskbar, and then select Playback devices . 2. On the Playback tab, select Speakers an d Headpho nes .
5 Navigating using touch gestures, pointing devices and the keyboard Your computer allows navi gation using touch gestures (select mode ls only) in addition to the keyboard and mo use. Touch gestu res can be used on your comp uter TouchPad or on a to uch screen (select models only).
To view a demonst ration of eac h gesture: 1. From the Start screen, type c to display the Apps list. Select Control Panel , and then select Hardware and Sound . 2. Select Synaptics TouchPad . 3. Click a gesture to activate the demo nstration. To turn a gest ure off or on: 1.
Pinching/zooming Pinching and zooming allow you to zoom in or out on images or text. ● Zoom in by placing two fingers tog ether on th e T ouchPad zone and then moving your fingers apart. ● Zoom out by placing two fingers ap art on the Tou chPad zone and then moving your fing ers together.
NOTE: Rotate is intended for specif ic apps where you can mani pulat e an object or image. Rotate may not be fu nctional for all apps. 2-finger click (select models only) 2-finger click allows you to make menu selections for an object on the screen.
Edge swipes Edge swipes allow you to perform ta sks such as changing settin gs and finding o r using apps. Right-edge swipe The right-edge swipe reveals the charms, which let you search, share, start apps, access devices, or change setting s. ● Swipe your finger gently from the right edg e to display the charms.
Left-edge swipe The left-edge swipe reveals your ope n apps so that you can switch to them quickly. ● Swipe from the le ft edge of the TouchPad to switch between apps. Using the keyboard and mouse The keyboard and mo use allow you to type, select items, scroll and to pe rform the same functio ns as you do by using tou ch gestures.
TIP: The Windows logo key on the keyboard allows you to quickly re turn to the Start screen from an open app or the Desktop. Pressing the Windows lo go key again will return you to the previous scree n. NOTE: Depending on the country o r region, your ke yboard may have di fferent keys and keyboard functions than those di scussed in this section.
Icon Key Descriptio n f8 Plays the next track of an audio CD or the next section of a DVD or a BD. f9 Decreases speaker volume incrementally as long as you hold down the key. f10 Increases speaker volume incrementally as lon g as you hold down the key.
Function Hot key Description Display system information. fn + esc Displays information about system hardware components and the system BIOS version number.
6 Managing power Your computer can operate on either battery power or external power. Wh en the computer is only running on batte ry power and an AC power source is not a vailable to charge th e battery, it is important to monitor and co nserve the battery charge .
● Press a key on the keyboard . ● Tap or swipe the TouchPad. When the computer exits Sleep , the power lights turn o n and the computer displays the screen as it was when you stopped workin g. NOTE: If you have set a password to be required on wakeup, you mus t enter your Win dows password before the computer will return to the screen.
Different pow er meter icons indi cate whether the computer is runnin g on battery or external power. The icon also disp lays a message if the battery h as reached a low or critical battery leve l. Selecting a power plan A power plan manage s how the computer uses po wer and helps you conserve power and maximize performance.
CAUTION: Removing a battery that is the sole po wer source for the comp uter can cause loss of information. To prevent loss of info rmation, save your work and init iate Hibernation or shu t down the computer through Wind ows before removi ng the battery.
● Disconnec t unused ext ernal devices t hat are not plugged into an external power so urce, such as an external hard drive c onnected to a USB port. ● Stop, disable, or remo ve any external media cards that you are not using. ● Before you leave your work, initiate Sle ep or Hi bernation, or shut down the computer.
A stored battery sho uld be checked eve ry 6 months . If the capacity is less than 50 percen t, recharge the battery befo re returning it to sto rage. Disposing of a user-r eplaceable battery WARNING! To reduce the risk of fire or bu rns, do not disassemble, crush, or puncture; do n ot short external co ntacts; do not disp ose of in fire or w ater.
Troubleshooting an AC adapter Test the AC adapter if the com put er e xhibits any of th e following symptoms when i t is connected to AC power: ● The computer does not turn on. ● The display does n ot turn on. ● The power lights are off. To test th e AC adapter: 1.
Shut down the co mputer under any o f the following cond itions: ● When you are conne cting an exte rnal hardwa re de vice that does not connect to a USB or video port ● When the compu ter will be.
7 Managing and sharing information Drives are digita l storage devices that help you store, manage, share, an d access information. Your computer has an internal hard drive or a solid st ate drive that stores yo ur computer's software, operating system, and also provides storage for all of your personal files.
▲ Connect the USB cab le for the device to the USB po rt. NOTE: The USB port on your compu ter may look slig htly different from the illustration in this section.
CAUTION: To reduce the risk of damage to the digital card connectors, use minimal force to insert a digital card. 1. Hold the card label-side up, with the connecto rs facing the computer. 2. Insert the card into the digi tal storage slot, and then press in on the card until it i s firmly seated .
Use these tips for best p erformance of your op tical drive: ● When the battery is the only source of po wer, be sure the batter y is sufficiently charged before writing to media. ● Do not type on the keyboa rd or move the comput er while an optical drive is writing to a disc.
4. Hold the disc by the edges to avoid tou ching the flat surfaces and po sition the d isc label-side up over the tray spindle. NOTE: If the tra y is not fu lly acces sible, tilt t he disc carefully t o positio n it over t he spindle . 5. Gently press the disc (3) down onto the tray spind le until the disc snaps into place.
2. Remove the disc (3) from the tray by ge ntly pressing dow n on the spindle while lifting the outer edges of the di sc. Hold the disc by the edg es and avoid touching the flat surfaces. NOTE: If the tra y is not fu lly acce ssible, tilt the disc carefully as you remove it.
3. Under View your active netw orks , select an active network. 4. Select Change advanced sharing settings to set sharing options fo r privacy, netw ork discovery, file and printer sharing o r other network optio ns.
8 Maintaining your computer It is important to perform regular maintenance to keep you r computer in optimal con dition. This chapter provides information abou t improving the perfo rmance of your comp uter by running too ls such as Disk Defragmenter and Disk Clea nup.
CAUTION: To prevent information loss or an unresponsive system: Before removing or installing a drive, shut down the computer. If yo u are unsure whether the computer is off or in the Sleep state, turn th e computer o n, and then shut it d own through the operating system.
8. Pull up the hard drive tab (3) , and th en remove the hard drive (4) from the hard drive bay at an angle. Installing a hard drive 1. Insert the ru bber spacers on the drive into the op enings (1) on the hard drive bay. 2. Insert the hard d rive into the ha rd drive bay (2) .
4. Connect the hard d rive cable conn ector (4) . 5. Lower the service door onto th e computer (1) , and then slide the door (2) toward the ba ttery ba y until the battery/service door latch snaps into place. 6. Replace the battery. 7. Reconnect external po wer and external d evices.
Using HP 3D DriveGuard (select mode ls only) HP 3D DriveGuard protects a hard drive by parking the drive and halting data requests unde r either of the following conditi ons: ● You drop the compu ter. ● You move the compute r with the display cl osed while the co mputer is running on battery power.
Adding or replacing memory modules The computer ha s two memory module slo ts. Th e capa city of the computer can be upgraded by adding a memory mo dule to the vacant expansio n me mory module slot or by upgrading th e existing memory module in the prim ary memory module slot.
b. Grasp th e edge of th e memory module (2) , and then ge ntly pull the memory module out of the memory module slot. CAUTION: To prevent damage to the memory module, hold the memory module by the edges only. Do not touch th e components on the memory modul e.
c. Gently press the memory mo dule (3) down, applying pr essure to both the left an d right edges of the memo ry module, until the retenti on clips snap i nto place. CAUTION: To prevent damage to the memo ry module, be sure that you do not bend th e module.
Cleaning the display, sides, and cover Gently wipe the display us ing a soft, lint-free cl oth moistened with an alcohol-free glass cleaner. Allow the display to dry before clo sing the computer co ver. Use a pre-moistened g ermicidal wipe to clean the si des and cover.
● If the computer has a wireless de vice installed, the use of these devices may be re stricted in some environments. Such restrictions may apply o nboard aircraft, in ho spit als, near explosive s, and in hazardous loca tions.
9 Securing your computer and information Computer security is essential for protectin g the confiden tiality, integrity, and avail ability of your information.
For additional informa tion about Windows passwor ds, such as screen-sav er passwords, see Help and Support. To access Help and Support, from the Start screen, type help , an d then select Help and Support from the list of apps . Setting Windows passwords Password Function User password Protects access to a Windows user account.
Using Internet security software When you use your computer to access email, a ne twork, or the Internet, you potentially expose your computer to computer viruses, sp yware, and other online threats.
To be sure that all a vailable updates are in st alled on the computer, obs erve these guidelin es: ● Run Windows Up date as soon as po ssible afte r you set up your computer. From the Start screen, type windows upd ate. Click Settings , and then select Windows Update from the options displayed.
3. Insert the security cable lock into the security cable slot on the compute r (3) , and then lock the security cable lock with the key. 4. Remove the key and keep it in a safe place.
10 Using Setup Utility (BIOS) and System Diagnostics Setup Utility, or Basic In put/Output System (BIOS), controls co mmunication between all the input and output devices on the system (such as disk drives , display, keyboard, mous e, and printer).
Downloading a BIOS update CAUTION: To reduce the risk of damage to the computer or an u nsuccessful installation, downlo ad and install a BIOS update only when the computer is connected to reli able external power u sing the AC adapter.
NOTE: If you need to stop a diagno stic test while it is ru nning, press esc . Using System Diagnostics 65.
11 Backing up, restoring, and recovering Your computer includes t ools provided by HP and the operating system to help you safeguard your information and re trieve it if you ever need to . These tools wi ll help you return your computer to a proper working state or even back to the original factory state , all with simple steps.
choose to reset the computer by reinstallin g Windows or choose to recover using HP Recovery Manager. NOTE: File History is not en abled by default, so you must turn it o n. For more information and step s for enabling Wi ndows File History, see Windows Help and Support.
Restore and recovery There are several options for re covering your system. Choose the method that best matches your situation and leve l of expertise: ● If you need to restore your p e rsonal files and data, you can use Windows File History to restore your information from the backups you created.
Using Windows Refresh fo r quick and easy recovery When your computer is not work ing properly and you need to regain system stability, the Windows Refresh option allo ws you to start fres h a nd keep what is importan t to you. IMPORTANT: Refresh re moves any traditional applications that were not origina lly installed on the system at the factory.
3. Click Change PC setting s in the bottom-right corne r of the scre en, and then select General from the PC settings screen. 4. Under Remove everythi ng and reinstall Windows , select Get starte d , and follow the on- screen instructions.
Using HP Recovery media to recover You can use HP Recovery media to recover the or iginal system. This method can be used if your system does not have an HP Reco very partition or if the hard drive is not working proper ly. 1. If possible, bac k up all personal files.
12 Specifications Input power The power information in this section may be helpfu l if you plan to travel internationally with the computer. The computer op erates on DC power, whi ch can be supplied by an AC or a DC power source. The AC power source must be rated at 100–240 V, 50 –60 Hz.
13 Electrostatic Discharge Electrostatic discharge is the rele ase of static electricity wh en tw o objects come into contact—for example, the sho ck you receive wh en you walk across th e carpet and touc h a metal door knob. A discharge of static ele ctricity from fingers or other electrostati c conductors may damage electronic components.
