4 Removal and replacement procedures Preliminary replacement requirements Tools required You will need the following tools to comple te the removal and re placement procedures: ● Flat-bla ded screw .
Cables and connectors CAUTION: When servicing the computer, be sure that c abl es are placed in their prop er locations during the reassembly p rocess. Improp er cable placem ent can damage the co mputer. Cables must be handle d with extreme care to avo id damage.
Grounding guidelines Electrostatic discharge damage Electronic componen ts are sensit ive to electrostatic d ischarge (ESD). Circu itry design and struc ture determine the deg ree of sensitiv ity.
Packaging and transporting guidelines Follow these groun ding guidelines whe n packaging and transp orting equipment: ● To avoid hand contact, transport products in static-safe tubes, bags, or boxes. ● Protect ESD-sensitive parts an d assemblies wi th conductive or approv ed containe rs or packaging.
Equipment guidelines Grounding equi pment must include eith er a wrist stra p or a foot strap at a grou nded workstation. ● When seated, wear a wrist strap connected to a grounded syste m. Wrist straps are flexibl e straps with a minimu m of one megohm ±1 0% resi stance in the ground co rds.
Component replacement procedures This section provides re moval and replacement procedures. There are as many as 8 3 screws, in 8 different sizes, that mu st be re moved, replac ed, or loosene d when servicing the computer. Make specia l note of each screw size an d location during remova l and replacement.

Release the zero inserti on force (ZIF) conne ctor (1) to which the keyboard cabl e is attached, an d disconnect the keyboard cable (2) from the system board.

3. Remove the memory module (2) by pul ling the module a way from the slot at an angle. NOTE: Memory modules a re designed with a notch (3) to prevent incorrect insertion into the memory module sl ot. Reverse this procedure to in stall a memory module.
DVD-ROM drive Description Spare part num ber DVD-ROM d rive 599539-001 Before r emoving th e DVD-R OM drive, follow these steps: 1. Shut down the computer.
5. If it is necessary to replace the DVD-ROM drive bracket , positi on the DVD-ROM drive with the rear toward you. 6. Remove the two PM2.0×3.0 screws (1) that secure the DVD-R OM drive bracket to th e DVD- ROM drive. 7. Remove the DVD -ROM drive brac ket (2) .

Speakers Description Spare part num ber Speaker assembly 599566-001 Before removing the speakers, follow th ese steps: 1. Shut down the computer. 2. Disconnect all ext ernal devices connected to the computer.
7. Slide the right spea ker back and out fro m the tab (5) that hold s it at th e right, then lift t he right speaker (6) up and out at an angle. Reverse this procedure to insta ll the speakers.
Palm rest Description Spare part num ber Palm rest (includes TouchPad) 599551-001 Before removing the palm rest, fol low these steps: 1. Shut down the computer.

Solid-state module NOTE: The solid-state module spare part kit includes a solid-state module bracket. Description Spare part num ber 2-GB 614527-001 4-GB 614528-001 8-GB 634653-001 Before removing the solid-state module, foll ow these steps: 1. Shut down the computer.
4. Remove the solid-stat e module (4) from th e solid-sta te module b ay. 5. If it is necessary to replace the solid-stat e module bracket, remo ve the PM3.0×3.5 screws (1) from each side of the solid-state module . 6. Lift the bracket (2) straight up to remove it from the s olid-state module.
RTC battery Description Spare part num ber RTC battery 599516-001 Before r emoving th e RTC bat tery, foll ow these steps: 1. Shut down the computer. 2.

CAUTION: To preven t an unresponsive system, replace the wireless module only wit h a wireless module authorized fo r use in the computer by the governmental agency that regulates wirele ss devices in your country o r region.
4. Remove the WLAN module (3) by pulling the module away from the slot at an angle. NOTE: WLAN module s are designed with a no tch (4) to prevent incorrect insertion.
Heat sink and fan NOTE: The heat sink spare part kit includes replacement thermal material. Description Spare part num ber Fan 599544-001 Processor heat sink 599546-001 Before removing the heat sink, follow the se steps: 1. Shut down the computer. 2. Disconnect all ext ernal devices connected to the computer.
4. Lift the right edge of the heat shield to disengage t he tabs on t he left s ide of th e heat sh ield from the top co ver, and then remo ve the heat shield (3) . 5. Disconnect the fan cable from the system board (1) . 6. Loosen the 2.0×5.0 ca ptive screw (2) from the system board, and then remove the fan (3) .
7. Following the sequ ence stamped in to the heat si nk, lo osen the four PM2.5×10.0 captive screws (1) that secure the h eat sink to the proce ssor. 8. Lift the heat sink off the processor (2) , and then lift the heat sink up and to the right to remove the heat sink fr om the base enclosur e (3) .
Processor NOTE: The processor spare part kit includes re placement thermal material. Description Spare part num ber Processor , Intel Arrandale P4500 1.8-GHz, (includes replacement thermal material) 611699-001 Before removing the processor, follow these step s: 1.
3. Lift the processor (2) straight up and remove it. NOTE: When you install the pro cessor, the gold triangle (3) on the processor must be aligned with the triangle (4 ) embossed on the processor socket. Reverse this procedure to insta ll the processor.
Display assembly NOTE: The display assembly spare part kit in cludes 2 WLAN antenn as and cable s. Description Spare part number Display assembly, 33.8-cm (1 3.
3. Lift the display assembly (4) straight up and remove i t from the base enclo sure. 4. If it is necessary to replace the display bezel, display enclosure, or disp lay hinges, remove the four Mylar screw covers (1) and the four slotted T 8 M2.5×5.0 screws (2) that secure the display bezel to the dis play assembly.
c. Flex the inside edge of the left side an d the ri ght side of the beze l until it disengages from the display back cover (3) . d. Remove the display bezel from the display back cover (4) . 6. If it is necessary to replac e the displa y hinges, remove the six T8 2.
8. Peel back the tape (1) that secures the displa y cable to the displa y panel, and then release the ZIF connector (2) . Remove th e cable from th e display panel con nector (3) . NOTE: The display ca ble includes th e microphone. 9. Remove the display panel.
11. Gently release the integrated microp hone (1) from the clips at the top of the display back cover, remove the displa y cable from the clips and rou ting channel s (2) along the bottom of t he display back cover, and then remove the display cable (3) .
Top cover Description Spare part num ber Top cover 599569-00 1 Before removing the top cover, follow these steps: 1. Shut down the computer. 2. Disconnect all ext ernal devices connected to the computer.
4. Release the top co ver from the side s of the base enclosure , and gent ly use a flat-bladed screwdriver to pry lo ose the top cover alo ng the front edg e (2) .
Modem module Description Spare part num ber Modem module NOTE: The modem module spare part kit does not include a modem module cable. The modem module cable is included in the Cable Kit. See Cable Kit on p age 22 for more Cable Kit spare part information.
5. Remove the modem module. Reverse this procedure to in stall the modem module. 70 Chapter 4 Remova l and replacement procedures.

5. Use the optical drive connector (4) to lift the right side (5) of the system board. 6. Remove the system board (6) at an angle. Reverse this procedure to insta ll the system board.

Modem module cable NOTE: The modem module cable with RJ-11 connector is includ ed in the Cable Kit on page 22 , part number 599525-0 01. Before removing the modem module cable, follow these steps: 1. Shut down the computer. 2. Disconnect all ext ernal devices connected to the computer.
3. Remove the modem cable (2 ) from the routing channel in the b ase enclosure. 4. Remove the modem cabl e. Reverse this procedure to in stall the modem cable .
Power connector cable NOTE: The power connector cable (DC power) is included in the Cable Kit on p age 22 , part number 599525-001. Before removing the power connecto r cable, follow thes e steps: 1. Shut down the computer. 2. Disconnect all ext ernal devices connected to the computer.
2. Disconnect the power connector cab le from the base enclosure (1) , and then remove the cab le from the routing cha nnel (2) in the base enclosure. 3.
5 Computer Setup Starting Computer Setup Computer Setup is a preinstalled, ROM-based utility that can be used even when the operating system is not working or will not load. NOTE: Some of the Computer Setu p menu items listed in this guide ma y not be supp orted by your computer.
Using Computer Setup Navigating and selectin g in Computer Setup The information and setti ngs in Computer Setu p are accessed from the File, Se curity, Diagnostics, and System Configuration men us. To navigate and select in C omputer Setup, f ollow these steps: 1.
4. Follow the on-screen instructions. 5. To save your change s and exit, click the Save icon in th e lower-left corner of the screen, and then follow the on-scre en instructions. Your changes go into effect when the compu ter restarts. NOTE: Your password settings and se curity setting s are not changed when you restore the factory settings .
Computer Setup menus The menu tables in this sect ion provide an over view of Computer Setup options. NOTE: Some of the Computer Se tup menu items list ed in this chapter may no t be supp orted by your computer. System resource specifications You can use Device Manager to ge t a graphical view of the system resources that control how the devices work on the computer. 7 Power cord set requirements The wide range input fe ature of the co mputer permits it to ope rate from any line voltag e from 100 to 120 volts AC or from 220 to 240 volts AC. 8 Recycling Battery When a battery has reached the end of its useful life, d o not dispose of the battery in genera l household waste. Follo w the local laws a nd regulati ons in your area for computer b attery disposal. Display WARNING! The backlight contains mercury.
Perform the following ste ps to di sassemble the display assembly: 1. Remove all screw covers (1) and screws (2 ) that secure the display bezel to the display assembly. 2. Lift up and out o n the left and ri ght inside edges (1) and the top an d bottom inside edge s (2) of the display beze l until the bezel disengag es from the display assembly.
4. Disconnect all disp lay panel cables (1) from the display i nverter and remove the in verter (2) . 5. Remove all screws (1) that secure the display panel a ssembly to the display enclosure. 6. Remove the display panel assembly (2) from the display enclosure.
10. Remove the display pan el frame (2) from the display panel. 11. Remove the screws (1) that secure the backlight cover to the display panel. 12. Lift the top edge of the backlig ht cover (2) and swing it outward. 13. Remove the backlight cover. 14.
15. Remove the backlight cables (1) from the clip (2) in the display pa nel. 16. Turn th e display panel upside -down. WARNING ! The backlight contains mercury. Exercise caution when removing an d handling the backlight to avoid damag ing this compon ent a nd causing exposu re to the mercury.
18. Remove the backlight from the backlight frame. 19. Disconnec t the display pane l cable (1) from the LCD panel. 20. Remove the screws (2) that secure the LCD panel to the display rea r panel. 21. Release the LCD panel (3) from the d isplay rear panel.
