Soft ware Guid e 1– 1 1 Po w e r Selecting a P o w er Sour ce The notebook can run on internal po wer from a battery pack or on ex te rn al power from an A C adapter and other devices. The follo wing table describes the best po wer source for general tasks.
1–2 Softw are Gui de Po w e r Standb y , Hiberna tion and Shutdow n This section describes Standby , Hibernation, and shutdown, and explains when to implement them. Standb y and Hibernation are energy-sa ving features that can be initiated b y you or by the system.

The amount of ti me a battery pack can support Standby or Hibernation or hold a char ge v aries by notebook configuration and the condition of the battery pack.

Y ou can change man y of these settings according to your preferences. If you want to change the defa ult settings, see “Setting Po wer Preferences” later in this chapter .

For e xample, you can set an audio alert to warn you when the battery reaches a lo w-power condition.

Po w e r Softw are Gui de 1–13 Proce ssor P er for man ce Controls W indo ws XP Home and W indows XP Professional provide unique software that allo ws th e user to control processor performance. The CPU (central pr ocessing unit) speed can be set for optimal performance or for optimal po wer conserva tion.

2–8 Softw are Gui de Security About Adminis trator P a ssw ords An Administrator password protects the conf iguration settings and system identification information in the Setup utility . After it is set, this password must be entered to access Setup.

After 3 unsuccessful attempts to enter the Administrator password, you must restart the notebook to try again.
2–12 Softwa re Gui de Security Protectin g S ystem Inf ormation Using S y stem Information System Information options allo w you to: ■ Display or enter the notebook serial number , asset tag, and o wnership tag. ■ Display a battery pack serial number .
Security Softw are Gui de 2–13 Protectin g Y our Notebook When you use your notebook to access a network or the Internet, you expose the notebook to security and pri v ac y threats in the form of viruses, worms, and hack ers.
2–14 Softwa re Gui de Security Using Sec urit y Soft w are Measures HP recommends that you follo w these three protecti ve security software measures to improv e your notebook security and to reduce the se verity of security access threats.

Soft ware Guid e 3– 1 3 Multim edia Using CDs an d D VDs This chapter provides general instructions for using select multimedia hotke ys and Quick Launch buttons, playing CDs and D VDs, and using multimedia software. Multimedia softw are applications included with your notebook v ary by model.
3–2 Softw are Gui de Multimedia Obs erving t he Co p yrigh t W arning It is a criminal of fense, under applicable copyright laws, to mak e unauthorized copies of copyright-protected material, including computer programs, films, broadcasts, and sound recordings.
Multimedia Soft ware Guid e 3– 3 Select notebook models hav e 2 multimedia Quick Launch buttons—the Picture b utton and the Media b utton—to access default softwa re applications. ■ T o access the default photo and imaging software application, press the Picture button 2 .

Multimedia Soft ware Guid e 3– 5 InterVideo Hom e Theater (Selec t Models) InterV ideo Home Theater is a multimedia software application. The application records and plays digital media content: audio CDs, MP3s, pictures, video clips, D VDs, and VCDs.

4–10 Softwar e Updat es and Re stor ations Using t he S y stem Restore Utility The System Restore utility enables you to safeguard your system files and settings b y using restore points, which are restorable, benchmark “snapshots” of your system.
Softwar e Update s and Re stor ations 4–11 Repairing or Reinstalling Driv ers All dri vers required for notebook functionality can be reinstalled from the Driver Recovery CD included with your notebook. If you hav e not reinstalled your operating system, these dri vers can also be reinstalled from your hard dri ve.
4–12 Softwar e Updat es and Re stor ations Repairing or Reinstalling App lications All applications preinstalled or preloaded on your notebook can be repaired or reinstalled by using the Driver Recovery CD.

Softwar e Update s and Re stor ations 4–15 About O perating S y stem Reinstall ation If you could not solve the problem b y repairing the operating system as described in the pre vious section, it might be necessary to reinstall the operating system.
4–16 Softwar e Updat es and Re stor ations ■ The shortcuts on a desktop are often stored in C: Documents and Settings (Y our User Account) Desktop. ■ If you hav e customized the settings in a windo w , toolbar , or menu bar , you might w ant to take a screen shot of that element.
