2 - 1 2 Getting Star ted Overview The Thor VM1 V ehicle Mount Computer (VMC) is a ru gged, vehicle mounted computer r unning a Microsoft ® Windows ® Embed- ded Standard 2009 operating system and capable of wireless data co mmunications from a fork-lift tr uc k or any properly con fig- ured vehicle.
2 - 2 If you ordered additional accessories for the Thor VM1, verify they are also included with the order . K eep the or iginal packag ing mater ial in the ev en t the Thor VM1 should need to be returned f or se rvice. For details, see Product Service and Repair (pag e 9- 1).
2 - 3 • A mount for the Thor VM1 comp uter. The dock attaches to a vehicle vi a a RA M or U-bracket mount or to a RAM tabl e stand for use in a n office environment. • Conditioned power for the Thor VM1. The dock accepts 10-60V DC power inp ut directly or 50-150VDC power input with a DC/ DC converter.

2 - 5 Bac klights and Indicators Displa y Backlight There are sev eral configuration opti ons f or the Thor VM1 displa y backlight: P ower Management The display backlight is controlled by pow er management. When th e user activity timer e xpires, the displa y backlight is turne d off .
2 - 6 Po w e r U p The Quick Mount Smar t Doc k has a power s witch on the back. The “On” side of thi s roc ker s witch has a raised bump to allow the state of the s witch to be deter mined when the s witch may not be easily view ed, for example , after the dock is mounted in a v ehicle.
2 - 7 Rebooting the Thor VM1 Restart Restar t performs a controlled shutdown of t he Thor VM1 and then resta r ts the de vice. • Use the Ctrl + Alt + Del keypress sequence to start the task manage r. Tap the Shut Down button and select Restart from the pull-down list.
2 - 8 4. Enter the “Host Address” of the host system t hat you wish to connect to. This may either be a DNS name or an IP address of the host system. 5. Update the telnet port number , if your host application is configured to listen on a specific port.
3 - 1 3 Har d ware Overview System Har dware 802.11a/b/g/n Wi reless Client The Thor VM1 h as an 802.11a/b/g/n network card that suppor ts div ersity with two internal or external antenna s . P ower management for the network ca rd is configured with the Summit Client Utility (page 6-1).
3 - 2 A microphone is located at the upper righ t of the Thor VM 1 display , near the Thor VM1 emblem. When a headset is plugged into the adapter cable, the inter nal microphon e is disabled. Card Slots CompactFlash (CF) Slot The CF A T A slot is no t hot s wappable .
3 - 3 (page 4-47 ). Uninterruptible P ower Supply The Thor VM1 contains an inter nal UPS batter y . The user ca n Replace UPS Battery (page 4-60). The UPS batter y is automatically charged when the Thor VM1 is placed in a po wered dock, pro vided the safe charging tem- perature conditio ns below are met.
3 - 4 Fuse P ower Management Modes The Thor VM1 has f our power modes: Fu ll On, Standby, Hiberna te and Off . Full On Mode When the Thor VM1 is attached to either vehicle power or an e xter nal power supply or is operating from the UPS bat- ter y and the power b utton is pressed, the Thor VM1 is in the On mode.
3 - 5 The Thor VM1 is also off when it is not connected to a power source and the UPS batter y is depleted. Howe ver , an inter nal Real Time Clock (R TC ) pow ere d b y an inter nal batter y maintains the date and time while the Thor VM1 is off.
3 - 6 External Connectors P ower the Thor VM1 off before attaching a cab le to any por t (seria l, USB , Audio/CAN, etc.). The e xter nal I/O connectors for the Thor VM1 are located on the righ t side of the Quick Mount Smart Dock (when viewed from the back).
3 - 7 CANbus / A udio Connector P ower Suppl y Connector The CANbus/A udio connector is a D-15 male connector located on the back of the Quick Mount Smar t Dock. The connector suppor ts a headset adapter cable or a CANbus cab le. The Thor VM1 does not suppor t connecting audi o and CANbus simultaneously .
3 - 8 Antenna Connections External Antenna Connector Internal 802.11 Antenna If the intern al 802.11 antenna option is ordered, antennas are mounted inside t he Th or VM1. The internal anten nas are not user accessible . V ehicle Remote Antenna The e xter nal antennas can be remotely mounted on the vehicle.
3 - 9 Keyb o ard O pt io n s The 2nd, AL T , CTRL and Shift keys (when present) are sticky k eys . The Keyboard LEDs (pa ge 3-13) identify the active stic ky modifier mode state of the ke ybo ard.The Thor VM1 has an integrated ke ypad with five programmable k eys and an av ailable e xter nal ke yb oard.
3 - 10 IBM 5250 Overla y Ke ypad LEDs See Keyboard LEDs (p age 3-13) f or details. USB Ke yboard / Mouse A standard USB ke yboard or mouse can be attached to the Thor VM1 using the appropriate adapter cable . The Y cable attaches to the Thor VM1 and provides a USB c onnector .

3 - 12 Connection LEDs WW AN LED Wi-Fi LED Bluetooth LED The Bluetooth LED blinks once e ver y 6 seconds when the Blueto oth client is paired b ut not connected. It blinks once f or a very shor t time e ver y 2 seconds when paired and connected. It blinks e v er y second when in discovery .
3 - 13 Ke yboard LEDs The ke yboard LEDs are located near the speci fied ke y . 2nd LED Shift LEDs There is one LED next to each Shift k ey . Both LEDs indicate the status of Shift mode and Caps Loc k mode. Ctrl LED The Ctrl ke y is not present on the 12-ke y ke ypad .
3 - 14 An e xtra or replacement stylus ma y be ordered. A replaceable touch screen protective film is av ailable when the Thor VM1 is used in an abrasiv e environment. Contact Technical Assistance (page 9-1) for a vailability . T ouch Screen Defroster Extended temperature versions of the Th or VM1 contain a touch screen defroster .
4 - 15 4 V ehicle Mounting and Accessory Installation Intr oduction The Thor VM1 is design ed to be mounted to a Quick Mount Smar t Dock in a v ehicle with ei ther a RAM mount or U Bracket sys- tem. A pow er cable is pro vided with the Thor VM 1 dock.
4 - 16 Cleaning Do not use paper towels or harsh-chemical-based cleaning fluids since th e y may result in damage to the Thor VM1 surfaces, cables, connectors and mounting hardware . Use a clean soft cloth to wipe any dir t, moisture or grease from the Thor VM1, connectors, cabl es or the v ehicle mounting hard- ware .
4 - 17 Dock I/O Pin Cover . P adlock Laptop Security Cable The dock contains a tethered I/O Pin Cov er to protect the I/O pins on the dock when a Thor VM1 is not mounted in the dock. • When the Thor VM1 is not installed in the dock, use the I/O Pin Cover to protect the pins on the dock as shown.
4 - 18 Install RAM Mount Before installation begins, verify you ha ve the applicable v e hicle mounting brack et assembly components necessar y , as shown in the follo wing figures. Components - RAM Mounting Kits In addition to the kits below , individual R AM mounting components are also av ailable.
4 - 19 Procedure - RAM Mount Assemb ly Equipment Needed: Sockets, scre wdriver and a T orque wrench capa b le of measuring to 50 inch pounds (5.64±.56 N/m). Note: Torquing tool is n ot supplied by Honeyw ell. Tools ne ede d to attach the RAM Clamp Mount to the vehicle are not supplied by Honeywell.

4 - 22 Step 2 – Attach RAM Mount Ball to the Thor VM1 Qu ick Moun t Smar t Doc k 1. Turn the Thor VM1 off before attaching the RAM mount ball. 2. Place the Thor VM1 face down on a stable surface. 3. Position the RAM ball on the rea r of the Thor VM1 dock, aligni ng the holes on the back of the Thor VM1 dock with the holes on the RAM ball base.
4 - 23 Step 3 – Attach Thor VM1 Ass embl y to RAM Mount 1. Slip the Size D RAM arm over the ball on the vehicle RAM mount (RAM Ball mount shown). 2. Insert the ball on the dock into the RAM arm and tighten the knob on the RAM arm using the supplied RAM wrench.
4 - 24 Install U Bracket Mount Before installation begins, verify you ha ve the applicable v e hicle mounting brack et assembly components necessar y , as shown in the follo wing figures.
4 - 25 Mounting P ositions The adapter brack et can be mounted in a high or low pos ition, depending on vie wing position, a s shown below . Additionally , the slotted U brac ket allo ws the Thor VM1 to be mounted verticall y or tilted f orward or backw ard for best viewing angle.

Step 2 - Remo ve RAM Ball If the Thor VM1 Quick Mount Smart Dock has a RAM ball at tached, the RAM ball must be remov ed fro m the doc k to use the U Brack et mount. Remov e the RAM ball. The hardware used to attach the RA M ball to the dock is not reused f or the U brack et mount.
4 - 27 Connect Cables There are many cables a v ailable f or the Thor VM1 including power cab les, and data/ communication cablesThor VM1. Strain Relief Cable Clamps Equipment Required: Phi llips scre wdriver (not supplied by Honeywell) There are five strain relief cable clamps se cured to the Thor VM1 Quick Mount Smart Dock.
4 - 28 Connect P ower P ower options include: • 12-48 VDC Vehicles (10-60 VDC Direct Connection) (see page 4-29) - Direct conne ction to vehicle power. • 60-144 VDC Vehicles (50-150 VDC Power Supply, Screws on Side of Lid) (see page 4-34) - Requires the use of a DC/ DC power supply.
4 - 29 12-48 VDC V ehicles (10-60 VDC Direct Connection) P ower Cable Identification The DC power cab le (included with the doc k) is one of the two styles below: Note: Correct electrical polarity is req uired for safe and pr oper i nstallation. See the figure s below for additional w ire color-coding specifics.

4 - 31 Ignition Contr ol Wiring Diagram Ignition wire must be co nnected and Igni tion Control must be selected on the AutoOn (page 5- 5) control panel.
4 - 32 A uto-On Control Wiri ng Diagram A uto-On must be selected on the AutoOn (page 5-5) control panel. The ve hicle supply co nnections should be made to vehicle s witche d po wer to allow the terminal to auto matically power-up when v ehicle power is s witched on or when the pow er switch on the back of the dock is placed in th e On position.
4 - 33 Manual Contr ol Wiring Diagram Ignition wire must be l eft unconnected Standard must be selected from the AutoOn (page 5-5) control panel. CAUTION For battery powered vehicles: • Red wire is connected to battery positive. If t here is a red wire and a re d/white wire, twist them together and connect to battery positi ve.

If the DC/DC power supply does not hav e screws in the side of the lid , see 60-144 VDC Vehicle s (50-150 VDC Power Supply, Screws on Top of Lid) (page 4-3 8).
4 - 35 P ower Cable Identification The DC power cab le (included with the dock) is one of the two styles below: Note: Correct electrical polarity is required for safe and proper installati on. See Wiring Di agram (page 4-37) for additional wire color-coding spe cifics.
4 - 36 6. Connect the ground (green) wire from the Thor VM1 to the GND terminal on the input side of th e DC/DC power supply . 7. Route the wiring from the DC/DC power supply to the vehicle’s electrical system. Do not connect to vehicle power at this time .
4 - 37 Wiring Diagram CAUTION For battery powered vehicles: GND must be connected to the vehicle chassis ground. For internal combustion engine powered vehicles: GND is connected to th e vehicle chassis ground, whi ch can also be battery negative.
4 - 38 60-144 VDC V ehicle s (50-150 VDC P ower Supply , Screws on T op of Lid) This option requires DC/DC power supply Honeyw ell P ar t no . VX89303PWRSPL Y, sho wn below . If the DC/DC power supply does no t ha ve screws in the top of the lid, see 60-144 VDC Vehicles (50-150 VDC Power Supply, Screws on Side of Lid) (page 4-34).
4 - 39 P ower Cable Identification The DC power cab le (included with the dock) is one of the two styles below: Note: Correct electrical polarity is required for safe and proper installati on. See Wiring Di agram (page 4-41) for additional wire color-coding spe cifics.
4 - 40 6. Route the wiring from the DC/DC power supply to the vehicle’s electrical system. Do not connect to vehicle power at this time . 7. Strip the wire ends and connect to the input side of the DC/DC power supply. 8. Use looms and wire ties to secure all wiring as shown.
4 - 41 Wiring Diagram CAUTION For battery powered vehicles: must be connected to th e v ehicle chassis ground. For internal comb ustion engine powered vehic les: is connected to the vehicle chassis ground, which can also be battery negative.
4 - 42 VX6 / VX7 Adapter Cable An adapter cable is av ai lab le to attach the Thor VM1 to a v ehicle previously equipped with a VX6/VX7 DC power cable . The adapter cable has a 5-pin connector to match with the VX6/VX7 power supply cable on one end and a 6-pin con- nector to match to the Thor VM1 on the other end.
4 - 43 Thor VX8 / Thor VX9 Adapter Cable An adapter cable is av ai lab le to attach the Thor VM1 to a v ehicle previously equipped with a VX8/VX9 DC power cable . The adapter cable has a 6-pin connector to match the VX8 /XVX9 power supply cab le on one end and a 6-pin connec- tor to m atch the Tho r VM1 on t he other end.
4 - 44 Screen Blanking Prerequisite: The steps outline d in either 12-48 VDC Vehicles (10-60 VDC Direct Connection) (page 4-29), 60-144 VDC Vehicles (50-150 VDC Power Suppl y, Screws on Side of Lid) (page 4-34) or 60-144 VDC Vehicles (50-150 VDC Power Supply, Screws on Top of Lid) (p age 4-38) hav e been complete d.
4 - 45 User-Supplie d Cable A user-supplied cable can be used as well. Pins 7 and 8 must be connected as detaile d below . No other pins are to be connected . The user-supplied cable is installed as follo ws: 1. Connect the wire from Pi n 8 of the cable to the switched side of the Screen Blanking Box or to a user-sup- plied switch.
4 - 46 Note: The black and gray wire col ors in the illustration only a pply to the optional Honeywell Screen Blanking Box Cable, VM1080CABLE. The wire colors ma y be different in a user-suppli ed cable.
4 - 47 External A C/DC P ower Supply The optional external AC/DC power supply is f or use in environments, such as an office, where DC pow er is not av a il- able . Note: The Honeywell-approved AC/DC Power Supply and Adap ter Cable are only intended for use in a 25ºC (77ºF) maximum ambient temperature en vironment.
4 - 48 1. Seat the D9 connector firmly over the USB Connector on the Quick Mount Smart Dock. 2. Tighten the thumbscrews in a clockwise direction. Do not over tighten. 3. The USB-host connector provides a connector for a USB device such as a USB thumb drive.
4 - 49 Connect Headset Cable The CANbus/A udio con nector suppor ts a headset adapter cable or a CANbus cab le. The Thor VM1 does not suppor t con- necting audio and CANb us simultaneously . See CANbus / Audio Connector (page 8-6) for connector pinouts.
4 - 50 1. Do not twist the microphone boo m when adjusting the mi crophone. The microphone should be adjusted to be about two finger width s from your mouth. 2. Make sure the microphone is pointed at yo ur mouth. Note the small “Talk” labe l near the mouthpiece.
4 - 51 Install Remote Antenna Remote antennas are av ailable f or th e 802.11 WLAN radio , the WW AN radio and the GPS. 802.11 Remote Mount Antenna Components and Mounting Diagram The Remote Antenna Installatio n Kit consists of two brac kets (base plate and r ight angle), cable , and antenna.
4 - 52 T ypical Installation Mounting Instructions 1. Attach and secure the desired mounting bracket to th e highest point on the safety cage, fo llowing these pre- cautions: • The plate must be mou nted so the antenna is not damag ed while the vehicle or any of its parts are moving.
4 - 53 W AN Remote Mount Antenna The W AN remote mount antenna can be ei ther a magnetic mount or an adhesive mount antenna. The Remote Antenna Installati on Kit consists of the W AN antenna and an extension cable . The remote antenna is mounted on the top of a forklift, truck or other v ehicle and cab led to the Thor VM1 inside the vehicle.
4 - 54 Apply T ouc h Screen Protective Film The optional Thor VM1 touch screen protective film is shipped in packs of 10. The prot ectiv e film is fle xible and treated with an anti-glare coating on the outer surface . Installation 1. Make sure the touch screen is cl ean and dry before installa tion.
4 - 55 Disconnect UPS Battery Equipment Required The f ollowing equipment is user-supplied: • Torquing tool capable of measuring inch pounds • #2 Phillips screwdriver bit Disconnect Procedure CAUTION - The UPS battery must be disco nnected before you ship the Thor VM1, Replace UPS Battery (page 4-60) or Replace Front Panel (page 4-58) .
4 - 56 Install SD Car d An SD card slot is provided f or storage e xpansion. Equipment Required The f ollowing equipment is user-supplied: • Torquing tool capable of measuring inch pounds • SD car.
4 - 57 Install SIM Car d A SIM card ma y be required for WW AN. Equipment Required The f ollowing equipment is user-supplied: • SIM card for desi red carrier • Torquing tool capable of measuring inch pounds • #2 Phillips screwdriver bit Installation Procedure 1.
4 - 58 Replace Fr ont P anel Fr ont P anel Options The front panel of the Thor VM1 is field replaceable. The front panel assemb ly contains the ke yboard, touch screen and optional defroster . Should any of these components fail, the front panel assembly can easily be replaced to reduce down- time.
4 - 59 8. Position the replacement front panel so t he tab on the back of the front panel lines up with the slot on the Thor VM1. Be sure the two wi ring connectors are also aligned. 9. Position the replacement front panel so wiring conn ector on the back of th e fr ont panel lines up with the connector on the Thor VM1.
4 - 60 Replace UPS Battery The UPS batter y in the Thor VM1 is field replaceable . Should the UPS battery fail, it can easily be replaced to minimize down- time.
4 - 61 9. Remove the old battery and set it aside. 10. Inspect the battery well to verify the two foam pads are still in place. 11. Align the wiring connector on the new UPS b attery with the connecto r on the Thor VM1. Gently pre ss the connector into place until the retaini ng tab snaps into place.

5 - 1 5 Software Micr osoft Windows Set up and Configuration After the system files are pr ocessed, Micros oft Windo ws begins to load. Windo ws maintains a System Registry and INI files .

5 - 3 Control P anel Most control panel applets on the Thor VM 1 are standard Mi crosoft Windows items . The control panels and other functions li sted below ma y differ from a standard Microsoft Windows equipped PC or laptop . About Software Firmware V ersions The Software tab lists the fir mware versions installed.
5 - 4 Netw ork IP MA C Address The Network IP tab displays the MA C address of the networ k card(s) such as the Summit WLAN radio and the Bluetooth module.
5 - 5 Au t o O n Start > Contro l P anel > A utoOn (Classic view) Select the desired Ignition Control / Auto On beha vior . Standard The Thor VM1 is turned on and off manually by the us er using the power b utton on the front of the de vice.
5 - 6 Bluetoot h Start > Contro l P anel > Bluetooth Discov er and manage pairing with nearby Bluetooth devices . Factory Default Settings Bluetooth taskbar Icon state and Bluetooth de vice Icon states change as Bluetooth de vices are discov ered, paired, con- nected and disconnected.
5 - 7 Bluetooth Devices The Bluetooth Devices tab displa ys any device pre vi ously di sco vered and paired with the Thor VM1. Discov er T ap the Discov er button to locate all discov erable Bluetooth de vices in the vicinity . The Discov er y process also queries f or the unique identifier of each device discov ered.
5 - 8 Bluetooth Device List The discov ered paired devices ma y or ma y not be identi fi ed with an icon. Discovered de vice s without an icon can be paired. The Bluetooth panel as signs an icon to the de vice name. An icon with a red backg round indicates the d e vice 's Bluetooth connection i s inactiv e.
5 - 9 Bluetooth Device Pr oper ties Data on the Bluetooth Proper ties pane l cannot be changed by the user . The data display ed is the result of the device Query performed d uring the Discovery proce ss. The Status dialog box reflects the curr ent state of the highlighted device .
5 - 10 Prompt if devices request to pair This option is Enabled by default. A dialog box appears on the Thor VM1 screen noti fying the user a Bluetooth device requests to pair with the Thor VM1. The requesting Bluetooth devi ce does not need to have been Discovered by the Thor VM1 before the pairing request is received.
5 - 11 Reconnect Note: These options can still be checked or unchecked whether Bluetooth connecti on is enabled or disabled. Options Option Functio n Report when connection lost This option i s Enabled (checked) by de fault. There may be an audio or visual signal when a connecti on between a paired, active device is l ost.
5 - 12 About This panel lists the assigned Compu ter F rie ndly Name (that other de vices ma y discov er during their Discovery and Quer y process), the Bluetooth MA C address, and software v e rsion lev els. The data cannot be ed ited by the user . Auto Reconnect This option is Enabled (che cked) by default.

5 - 26 Bar Code Readers The Thor VM1 can use the following e xter nal bar code readers: • Tethered hand-held scanners are tethered to a serial port or a USB host port (via a dongle cable) on the Thor VM1 Quick Mount Smart Dock and are configure d by scanning the engine-specific b ar codes in the scanner manufacturer's programmi ng guide.
5 - 27 BIOS The Microsoft W indows operating syst em is installed before shipping. The default BIOS parameters are configured at that time. In most cases, it is unnecessar y to modify the BIOS parameters. Generally , it is only necessary to enter the BIOS setup to change the boot order of the dr iv es.

The automatic fir mware update utility provides an automated proc ess to update the firmware on the Thor VM1.
