2 - 1 2 Getting Star ted Overview The MX7 T ecton™ is a rugged, por table, hand-held mobile comp uter capab le of wireless data communications. The MX7 T ec- ton can transmit information using an 802.11 network card and it can store information for later transmission through an RS232 or USB por t.
2 - 2 Initial Setup fo r MX7 T ecton F ollowing are steps you might tak e when setting up a new MX7 T ecton. Follo w the links f or fur ther instruction for each step . Co n- tact Technical Assistance (page 16-1 ) if y ou need additional help. Note: Installing or removing accessories shoul d be performed on a clean, well-lit surface.

2 - 8 32 Ke y Numeric-Alpha Ke ypad Locking and Unloc king the MX7 T ecton Locking the MX7 T ecton The MX7 T ecton can be locked manually b y tapping Start > Lock . By def ault, this option is included on the Star t screen at the bottom of the screen.
2 - 9 Rebooting the MX7 T ecton When the Desktop/Star t scree n is display ed o r an application begins, the power up sequence i s complete. If you ha ve pre vi- ously sav ed your settings, they will be restored on reboot. Appli cation panel changes are sav ed when OK is tapped on an appli- cation proper ti es panel.
2 - 10 Inser ting and Remo ving the Batter y P ack Note: The battery should not be replaced in a dirty, h arsh or hazardous environment. When the batte ry is not connected to the MX7 Tecton, any dust or moisture that enters the battery we ll or connector may transfer to the battery/well termin als, potentially causing damage.
2 - 11 LEDs and Indicators The Scan Status ov al shaped indicator is situated below the ke ypad and next to the On button. LEDs (Light Emitting Diode s) are located on the front of the MX7 T ecton. They are: • System Status LED indicates power management status.
2 - 12 T apping the T ouch Sc reen with a Stylus Note: Always use the point of the stylus for t apping or making strokes on the touch scre en. Nev er use an actual pen, pencil, or shar p/ abrasive object to write on the touch screen. Hold the stylus as if it were a pen or pencil.
2 - 13 Setting the Date and Time Zone Note: The first time the MX7 Tecton is powered up, or the device powers up from a reset/cold boot, the time may be reset to the factory default value. Set the current date , time, time zone and assign a daylight savi ngs location using control panels.
2 - 14 Setting T erminal Emulation P arameters Before y ou mak e a host connection, yo u will, at a minimum, need to know: • the alias na me or IP address (Host Address) and • the port number (Telnet Po rt) of the host system to pr operly set up your host session.
2 - 15 Using the Input P a nel / Virtual Ke yboard The input panel / vir tual keyboard is alw a ys av ail ab le when needed e.g., te xt entr y . Place the cursor in the text en try fiel d and, using the stylus: • Tap the Shift key to ty pe one capital letter.
2 - 16 Connecting to Bluetooth Devices Before connecting to Bluetooth De vices: • The system administrator, usi ng the options on the EZPair (or LXEZ Pairing) cont rol pa nel has discovered, paired, connected and disconnected Bluetooth dev ices for the MX7 Tecton.
2 - 17 Attaching the Handstrap Note: Either the trigger handle is attached to the MX7 Tecton or the handstrap is attached, not bot h. In the abse nce of a trigge r handle, the hand strap should be used at all times. The han dstrap is pre-installed on a MX7 Tecton.
2 - 18 Attaching the T rig ger Handle Either the tr igger handle or th e handstrap is attached, not both . Honeyw ell recommends that, in the absence of a trig ger handle , the handstrap be used at all times. Pressing the tr igger on the trigger handle activates the integrated scanner and functions th e same as the Scan b utton on the ke ypad .
2 - 19 Assembling the Carry Case Note: Accessory installation or removal should be perfo rmed on a clean, well-lit surface. When nece ssary, protect the work surface, the MX7 Tecton, and components from electro static discharge. The main batter y can be remov ed and inser ted with out taking the MX7 T ecton out of the carr y case.
2 - 20 1. Connect the MX7 Tecton voice cable I/O co nnector to the I/O port on the MX7 Tecton. 2. Slide the voice cable ends of the headset assembly and the voice cable together unti l they click shut. Do not twist or bend the connectors. 3. Adjust the headset an d microphone.
2 - 21 Connecting the USB Client and P ower Cab le Note: AC/DC Adapter must be a ssembled before this process begi ns. Note: Do not connect AC power to the AC Adapter until instru cted in the following procedure. 1. Holding the cable I/O connector, pinch the catch release buttons in until the ca tches are open.
2 - 22 Assembling the A C/DC P ower Suppl y T o apply ex ter nal pow er to the MX7 T ecton follo w the steps below in sequence. 1. Plug the 3 prong AC adapter cable end into an indoor AC power source (e.g., wall outlet). 2. Firmly press the female end of the power cable into the male connector on th e power adapter.
2 - 23 Star tup Help Issue: Can’t change the date/time or adjust the v olume. Soluti on: AppLock is installed and may be running in User Mode on the MX7 T ecton. AppLock user mode restr icts access to the con- trol panels. Issue: T ouch screen is not accepting styl us ta ps or needs recalibration.

3 - 1 3 Har d ware Configuration System Har dware 802.11 a/b/g Wi reless Client The MX7 T ecton has an 802.11 network ca rd that suppor ts div ersity with two in terna l antennas. The CPU board does not allow hot sw ap ping the network card. WEP , WP A and LEAP are su ppor ted.
3 - 2 Video Subsystem The touch screen is a 3.5” (8.9 cm) diagonal viewing area, ¼ V GA 320 by 240 pixel TFT Reflectiv e Active Color LCD . Back- lighting is availab le and can be tur ned on and off with ke y sequences. The tur n-off timing is configured through the Start > Settings > Control Pan el > Display icon.
3 - 3 A udio Suppor t Speaker The speaker supplies audib le verification signals norma lly used by the Windows oper a ting system. The speak e r is located on the front of the MX7 T ecton , abov e the MX7 T ecton logo.
3 - 4 Ke ypads 55 Key K eypads Using the 55 K ey Alpha-Numeric K eypad There are three option s a vailab le f or the 55 ke y ke ypa d: 1. 55 key Alphanumeric Keymap - Primary De lete (page 12-1). 2. 55 Key 5250 Alphanumeric KeyMap - Primary Delete (page 12-6).
3 - 5 32 Key K eypad Using the 32 Ke y Numeric with T riple T ap Alpha 32 key Numeric-Alpha Keymap (page 12-16) • When using a sequence of keys that require an alpha key, first pr ess the Alph key. Use the Shft sticky key or the Caps key sequence (Blue+Tab) for uppe r case alphabetic characters.
3 - 6 Display The touch screen display is an active color LCD unit capable of suppor ting V GA graphics mo des. Displa y si z e is 240 x 320 pixels in por trait orientation. The covering is design ed to re sist stains. The touch screen allows signature capture and touch input.
3 - 7 The Li-Ion main batter y (MX7A381BA TT and MX7393BA TT) has been designed specifically f o r the Cold Storage device . This 125 0mAh battery has a blue label while the standard MX7 T ecton 220 0mAh batter y has a white (MX7A380BA TT and MX7392BA TT) labe l.

4 - 1 4 P o wer Modes and Batteries Po w e r M o d e s The MX7 T ecton has three power modes: On, Suspend and Off . On Mode The Display When the display is On: • the keypad, touch screen and all per.
4 - 2 Batteries The MX7 T ecton is designed to work with a Lithium-Ion (Li-ion ) batter y . Under nor mal conditions it should last app ro xima tely eight to ten hours before requiring a recharge. The more you use the scanner or the wireless transmitter , the shor ter the time required between batter y recharges.
4 - 3 Handling Batteries Safel y • Never dispose of a battery in a fire. This may cause an explosion. • Do not replace individual cells in a battery pack. • Do not attempt to pry open the battery pack shell. • Be careful when handling any ba ttery.

5 - 1 5 Software Configuration Intr oduction There are se veral diff erent aspects to th e setup and configurati on of the MX7 T ecton. Many of the setup and configuration set- tings are dependent upon th e optional f eatures such as hardware and software installed on the mobile device .
5 - 2 In addition, an API is provided to retur n a standard cop yright st ring, so that applications may ref erence this to be sure they are runn ing on a Honeywell mobile device f or licensing pur poses. Boot Loader The MX7 T ecton suppor ts a propr ietar y boot loader .
5 - 3 Star t Men u The Star t menu consists of applications and f olders. • Selecting an application from the menu starts that applica tion. • Selecting a folder open s a window di splayi ng the content s of the folder. • Selecting Settings displays the Settings panels by cate gory.
5 - 4 Status Icons Additional icons may be display e d at the lo wer edge of the T o da y screen. Note: Summit signal strength icons are disp layed only wh en the Summit Client Utility is controlling the radio. More information on Bluetooth activity and settings can be found in Bluetooth Configuration (page 7-1).
5 - 5 AppLock (Option) The AppLock progr am is accessed by the user or the AppLoc k Ad ministrator at bootup or upon completion of a cold boot. Set parameters using the Administration option in the Settings P anel. Summit SCU (Summit Client Utility) Summit automatically installs and ru ns after e very cold boot.
5 - 6 Synchr oniz e with a local time server • Use ActiveSync to copy GrabTime.ini from the My Device > Windo ws folder on the MX7 Tecton to the host PC. • Edit GrabTime.ini (on the host PC) to add the local time se rver’s domain name to the beginni ng of the list of servers.
5 - 7 MX7 T ecton OS Upgrade Depending on the size of the operating system, the total time required for a successful upgrade may require se veral minutes . The OS upgrade files are unique to your MX7 T ecton physical co nfiguration and date of manufacture .
5 - 8 When the bootloader process is complete, tap the Y es button to reboot to complete the update process. T ap the No button and the update is not complete. When the process i s finished (MX7 T ecton has restar ted), remo ve the SD card, replace the r ubber barrier and replace the main batter y .
5 - 9 Use the up and down arrow k eys on the MX7 T ecton to quickly scroll through the icons, or , using screen touch gestures, br ush the window up or down with a finger or the stylus . ActiveSync. Basic ActiveSync confi guration, incl uding synchronization with an Exchange server.
5 - 10 Remote Desktop (Auto). A shortcut to Remote Desktop Mobile with Connect activated.. Remote Desktop (page 5-67). Display remote desktop. Setup for computer, user name, passwo rd and domain re- quired. Use Options to se tup connected options for the remote desktop.
5 - 11 Office Mobile Settings Excel Mobile (page 5-64). Sprea dsheets can be edited, da ta can be sorted, formatting and changes are pre- served. PowerPoint Mobile (page 5-65). Ope n, view and edit slides in landsca pe or portrait format. Zoom and GoTo fea- tures enabl ed.
5 - 12 P ersonal System About Info (or About LXE) (p age 5-23). View software, hard ware, versions and netw ork IP. No user intervention required. Buttons (page 5-24). Set fun ctions of programmable buttons. Input (page 5-2 6). Set input options for keypa d, touch screen and voice.

5 - 14 Connections Settings P anels Cloc k & Alarms Time Adjust the settings and tap ok to sav e the changes. Select Y es on the popup box and the changes take effect immedi- ately . The Time can be set for both a Home and a Visiting location. Beam (page 5-50).
5 - 15 Alarms T o set an alarm: 1. Tap the check box to ena ble the alarm. 2. Tap < Description > and enter a description. The descri pti on is limited to 63 characters. 3. Tap the day (or days) to p lay the alarm. 4. Tap the time to set the time to pl ay the alarm.
5 - 16 Lock P asswor d Set the lock / unloc k behavior f or the MX7 T ecton. Pr ompt if phone unused f or T ap the check bo x and set the inactivity timeout before the MX7 T e cton locks . P asswor d type When selecting a Password type the MX7 T ecto n displa ys a numeric keypad or the input panel depending on the type of password selected.
5 - 17 Hint If the pass word entr y isn’t successful after a predefined number of attempts, the passw ord hint is displayed..
5 - 18 Po w e r Repor ts the current batter y state and allows the user to set suspend timeouts. Battery Batter y pow er is display ed for both the main and inter nal Super-cap batteries (backup battery ).
5 - 19 Adv a nced Select the inactivity timeout period bef ore the MX7 T ecton goes into Suspend mode. The settings on this panel are for the suspend timers onl y .
5 - 20 Sounds & Notifications Set volume parameters and assign sound W A V files to Windows Mobile ev e nts . Options that cannot be edited by the user are dimmed. Sounds F ollow the instructions on th e screen and tap OK to sa ve the changes . Changes take eff ect immediately .
5 - 21 Notifications The Event bo x lists se veral ev ents that ca n hav e an asso ciated notifica tion. The notifi cation, depe nding on the e vent selected, ma y consist of pla ying a sound, displaying a scr een message, flashing a light o r triggerin g the vibration motor .
5 - 22 T oday Configure the appearance and the items to display on the T oday screen. Appearance Use the Appearance panel to assign a theme for the de vice. The default theme is Windows Mobile Classic Blue . Any user installed themes are included in the list.
5 - 23 Pe rs o n a l Pa n e l s About Info (or About LXE) The data cannot be edited by the MX7 T ecton user on these panels. Software The Software tab ma y display the current language. All la nguages are b uilt into the OS image; English, F r ench, Ger- man, Simplified Chinese, T raditional Chinese, J apanese, K orea n, Spanish, Thai.
5 - 24 Buttons Pr ogram Buttons Program b uttons can be used to assign functions to ce r tain k eys such as F1 through F5 and the diamond ke ys. Buttons can only be assigned to programs that ha v e an icon in the Star t menu or the Se ttings folder (including sub-folders).
5 - 25 Up/Down Contr ol Customize the dela y before repeating and the repe at rate f or the up/down controls..
5 - 26 Input Input Method Select the pref erred method of input. The default method of input is the k eyboar d or input panel. When the cursor is located in a field allowing text input, the input panel may automatically be displa y ed.
5 - 27 W or d Completion Options.
5 - 28 Owner Information Set the MX7 T ecton owner details. Enter the information and tap ok to sav e the changes. The changes take effect immediately . Note: Owner Identification name listed in Start > Settings > P erso nal > Owner > Inf ormation is not used during Blueto oth operation.
5 - 29 System P anels About The About panels sh ow OS versions, allo w device name and descr iption input and display cop yright information . Ve r s i o n This screen displays inf or mation on the installed operating system and the hardware. Note that Windo ws Mobile is based on a Wind o ws CE engine.
5 - 30 Copyrights This screen is presented for inf or mation only . The Co pyrights information cannot be cha nged by the user ..
5 - 31 Backlight Set the power management timers for the displa y and ke ypad backl ights. Set the displa y br ightness for battery and external power . Brightness Slide the marker left and right to se lect the desired ke ypad and display brightness lev el .
5 - 32 Battery P ower When the MX7 T ecton is on batte ry power and the backlight ti mer expires, the displa y and the backlights f or the displa y and ke ypa d are turned off. Adjust the settings and tap OK to sav e the changes. The changes take eff ect immediately .
5 - 33 Battery This panel is used to view the status and percenta ge of power remaining in the MX7 T ecton main batter y . Jac ked is sho wn in the Status box when the Main battery is receiving external po wer .
5 - 34 Cer tificates Manage digital cer tificates used for secure communication. View – displays details of the cer tificate. P ersonal cer tificates ma y be extended from the view screen. Delete – remov es the cer tificate from the device. Delete is not av ailab le if the cer tificate was installed by a de vice adminis- trator .
5 - 35 Root Encryption This panel e nab les or disables encr yption of data file s on removab le storage cards . The default is Disab led. T ap the check box to encr ypt files when placed on a storage card. This panel lists any installed Root cer tificates.
5 - 36 External GPS This panel confi gures serial GPS access over hardware seri al por ts using the Microsoft GPS manager . The por t used, baud rate and por t sharing must be specifie d.
5 - 37 License Manager Use this option to view software license registration details, an d ser vice contract length f or purchased software installed on the MX7 T ecton. Note the follo wing image is a sample screen. Y our License Ma nager panel may sho w more tabs, e.
5 - 38 Memory These panels repor t the current state of vir tual memor y . Main The split between Storage memor y and Progr am memor y is not adjustable. Storage Card The pop-up list shows all mounted storage, both fix e d and remov able. The Find prompt at th e bottom of th e screen lau nches the Search utility .
5 - 39 Mixer The MX7 T ecton has a speaker located above the scan b utton . It is activ e when a headset is not connected to the device. Use the settings on these pa nels to adjust the volume, record gain and sidetone f or microp hone input, speaker and speaker output.
5 - 40 MX7 T ecton Options Set MX7 T ecton spe cific de vi ce options. Options that cannot be edited by the user are dimmed. Commu nication By default, TCP/IP v ersion 6 is enabled on the MX7 T ecton. T ap to uncheck this chec k box to disab l e TCP/IP v ersion 6.
5 - 41 Status P opup When the Status popup window is enabled, and displa yed, it is placed on top of the w indow in f ocus and hides any data beneath it. The Status P opup window is closed by pressing the assigned Status User or Status Admin ke y sequence.
5 - 42 P eripherals This panel i s used to enable and disable the touch screen heater and scan window heater . Note: Settings have no effect if the touch screen / scan win dow heaters are not installed. Click the radio b utton to enable or disable the heaters .
5 - 43 Regional Settings Regional Settings ha s the same general format and functi on as Regional Settings on a PC..

5 - 45 Registry Choose an MX7 T ecton softw are reload sche me . Load User Defaults When clicked, a standard load file dialog is opened, to allow the user to pick a Registry Sav e (.RSG) file. The applet then copies the specified User registr y file to the Active registry .
5 - 46 Remove Pr ograms This panel is used to uninstall programs. The Remov e Program listing is f or all programs installed via ActiveSync or via a CAB file.
5 - 47 Align Screen T ap the Align Screen button. The align screen opens and disp la ys a large cross-hair in the middle of the screen. T ap the middle of the cross-hair as it moves around the scre en. When the process is complete, the General screen is dis- play ed.
5 - 48 Te x t S i z e T ap the marker and slide it a cross the bar . As the mar ker mov es, the e xample te xt increases or decreases. T ap ok and the change is saved.
5 - 49 T ask Manager This panel displa ys all running tasks as well as the memory and CPU bandwidth be ing used b y each task. T apping on the column headings at the t op of the screen sort s the ta sks by the contents of that column. T appin g the same heading a second time rev erses the sor t order of that column.
5 - 50 Connections P anels Beam Enable or disab l e receiving OBEX (oBject EXchange is a co mmunications protocol used to e xchange information between mobile devices . The de vices must suppor t infrared co mmunication.) data beams, either b y IrD A (Infrared Data Association, also used as an abbreviation f or the Infrared [IR] por t on devices .
5 - 51 Connections Start > Settings > Connection s > Connections Configure connections to a host PC. Adv anced Options.
5 - 52 Domain Enroll Enroll in Active Directory . T o begin enrollment, tap Enroll in the Status ba r . Contact your system administrator fo r the applic able inf or mation to com- plete the screens.
5 - 53 Netw ork Cards This panel displays a listing of networ k adapters. The list is bas ed on drivers installed i n the registr y whether the adapter i s actually suppor ted by the hardware or not.
5 - 54 USB to PC The option is disabled by def ault. This option can be enabled wh en connection to a host PC using a USB cab le is required. Standar d Micr osoft Applications Note: The intent of this segment is to doc umen t standard Microsoft applications loaded on the MX7 Tecton.
5 - 55 Calendar Contacts Calendar/date book a pplication. Can be synchronized wi th PC Out- look calendar using ActiveSync. Address book application. Can b e synchronized with PC Outlook ad- dress book using ActiveSync.
5 - 56 Email File Explorer Email application. Ca n be synchronized with PC Outlook emai l using ActiveSync or it can synchroni ze with an E xchange server.
5 - 57 Getting Star ted Help This application provides several wizard s to walk a user through de- vice configuratio n. Access Windows Mobile help system on the MX7 Tecton.

6 - 5 Application Configuration The default Administrator Hotke y sequen ce is Shift+Ctrl+A . Administrator mode allows access to all features on the de vice. When the hotkey is pressed to s wi tch into Administrator mode, a pass word prompt is display ed (if a passw ord has been configure d ).

10 - 22 Using Remote Management 1. Configure the radio to connect to the network running the Mobile Device Server. After the MX7 Tecton is connected, proceed to step 2. 2. If it is desired to configure the radio using the Summit pack age, add the configured packa ge to the Wavelink Avalanche MC Console and enable it.

11 - 6 The Admin Login button pro vides access to editing wireless parameters. Profile and Global ma y only be edited after enter- ing the Admin Login passw ord. The pass word is case-sensitive . Once logged in, the button label ch anges to Admin Logout.
11 - 7 Enter the Admin pass word (the def ault pass word is SUMMIT and is case sensitiv e ) and tap OK. If the pass word is incorrect, an error message is display ed. The Administrator default pass word can be changed on the Gl obal (page 11-13). The end-u ser can: • Turn the radio on or off on the Main tab.
11 - 8 Profile Note: Tap the Commit button to save changes before leaving th is panel or the SCU. If the panel is exited before tapp ing the Commit button, changes are not saved! When logged in a s an Admin, see Admin Lo gin (page 11-6), use the Profile ta b to manage profiles.

11 - 12 Diags The Diags screen can be used for troub leshooting network traffic and radio connectivity issues. • (Re)connect – Use this button to apply (or reapply) the current pr ofile and attempt to associ ate or authenticate to the wireless LAN.
11 - 13 Global The parameters on this panel ca n only be changed when an Admin is logged in with a passw ord. The current values f or the parameters can be viewed b y th e general user without requir ing a pass word. Note: Tap the Commit button to save changes.
11 - 14 Custom P arameter Option The parameter Custom option is not suppor ted. The parame ter value is displa yed as “Custom” when the operating sys- tem registr y has been edited to set the Summit pa rameter to a v a lue that is not av ailable from the parameter’ s drop down list.
11 - 15 Ad Hoc Channel 1 Use this parameter when the Radio Mode profile parameter is set to Ad Hoc. Specifies the channel to be used for an Ad Hoc connection to another cl ient de- vice. If a channel is sele cted that is not supported by the by the radio, the defa ult value is used.
11 - 16 Note: Tap the Commit button to save changes. If this panel is closed before tappin g t he Commit button, changes are not saved! LED Off The LED on the wireless card is not visible to the user when the wire less card is installed i n a sealed mobile device.

14 - 22 Installing the Adapter Charging P oc ket Adapter Cup The adapter cup is installed facing in one direction. 1. Slip the adapter cup into the cradle charging pocket, ali gning th e screw hole in the adapter cup with the screw hole in the charging bay.
14 - 23 1. Lay the flat side of the Retainer Insert against the underside of the Retainer cap, show below. 2. Slide the Retainer Insert back tab into the slot at the back of the Retainer. 3. Fasten the Retainer Insert to the Retainer cap using screws and the pre-dri lled holes in the angled tabs (one on each side).
