22 2 Preparations Preparing the Power Supply Y ou can power the camcorder using a battery pack or dire ctly using the compact powe r adapter . If you connect the compact power adapter to the camcorder while a b att ery pack is attache d, the camcorder will draw power from th e power outlet.

25 Preparing the Power S upply When Using the Optional CA-9 20 Compact Power Adapter and DC-920 DC Coupler: 1 Move the d switch to OFF ( 햲 ). 2 Attach the DC coupler to the camcor der ( 햳 ). 3 Connect the power cord to the compac t power adapter and plug it into a power outlet ( 햴 ).
Date, Time and La nguage Settings 26 Date, Time and Language Settings Setting the Date and Time Y ou will need to set the date and time of the camcorder befor e you can start using it. When the camcorder’ s clock is not set, the [Date/Time] screen will appe ar automatically with the year selected.
27 Date, Time and La nguage Settings Displaying the Date and Time while Recording Y ou can display the date and ti me in the lower left of the screen. 1 Press the MENU button. 2 Push the joystick up/down to select [ M LCD/VF Setup]. 3 Select [Custom Display 2] and then [Date/Time] in a similar fashion.
Using the Menus 28 Using the Menus In mode, many of the camcor der’ s functions can be adjusted from the menu fo r genera l settings, which opens after pressing the MENU butt on. In mode, pr ess the MENU button to open the menu for general settings or SET to open the clip menu for clip oper ations.
29 Using the Menus NOTES • Unavailable items may appear grayed out. • Pressing the MENU button at any time closes th e menu. • When using the wireless controller , use the h , i , f , g and SET buttons in the same way as the camcorder’ s joystick.
Preparing the C amcorder 30 Preparing the Camcor der This section outlines the ba sic pr eparations for the camco rder such as attachi ng th e lens hood, attaching the microphone holder unit, and adjust ing the viewfinder and LCD screen.
31 Preparing the Camco rder Using the LCD Panel Open the LCD panel 90 degrees. • Y ou can rotate the panel 90 degrees downwar d or 18 0 degr ees toward the lens. NOTES • By default, the viewfinder scr een is turned off while you use the LCD screen.
Preparing the C amcorder 32 Setting the Screen to Black & White The viewfinder and LCD scree n display in color by defaul t but you can set them to black & whi te. Even when th e screen is black & white, onscr een text and icons will still be displayed in color .

Removing the T erminal C overs 1 Open the terminal cover . 2 Grasp the strip connectin g the terminal cover to the cam corder and pul l straight out.
Preparing the C amcorder 34 Using the Wireless Controller to Operate the Camcorder When using the wir eless controller , point it at the camcorder’ s remote sensor . When the wirel ess controller's buttons ar e operated, the camcorder's tally lamps will illuminate.
35 Preparing Recor ding Media Preparing Recor ding Media The camcor der recor ds clips to CompactFlash (CF) cards and photos* to SD and SDHC memory cards. The camc order is equipped with two CF card s lot s. I nit ial ize record ing med ia ( 0 37) when you use them with this camcor der for the first time.
Preparing Recording Media 36 Checking the Statu s of the CF Card Slots Y ou can check the status of the CF car d slots immediately by looking at the CF j /CF l access indic ator . Refer to the following table. Removing a CF car d 1 Wait until the access indicato r for the card slot with the CF card to be removed is of f ( 햲 ).
37 Preparing Recor ding Media Inserting and Removing an SD Card 1 T ur n of f the camcorder ( 햲 ). 2 Open the SD card slot cover . 3 Insert the SD card straight, with the label facing the grip belt, all the way into the SD car d slot until it clicks ( 햳 ).
Preparing Recording Media 38 4 Select [OK] and then press SET . • If you are using the [Complete] initiali zatio n option, pr ess SET to cancel the operation while it is in pr ogress. Y ou can use the SD card but all data will be erased. 5 When the confirmation message appears, press SET .
39 Preparing Recor ding Media T o use rel ay re co rdi ng By default, this function is activated. If it has been deactivated, follow the procedur e below to activate it. 1 Open the [Relay Rec] submenu. [ J Other Functions] [Relay Rec] 2 Select [On] and then press SET .
40 3 Recording Recording Video This section explains the recor ding basics. Before you begi n rec ording, make a test r e cor ding first to check if the camcorder operates c orrectly . Record fo r appr oximately 6 minutes at 50 Mbps ( 0 46). S hould the camco rder fail to op erate correctly , refer to T roubleshooting ( 0 162 ).
41 Recording Video 2 Press the ST ART/STOP button to begin r ecording. • Recordi ng starts. The front and r ear tally lamps illuminate and the recor ding indicator [ N REC] appears on the screen. • Y ou can use the ST ART/STOP button on the side grip or handle.
Recording Vide o 42 Recording in Full Auto Mode Move the CAMERA switch to FULL AUTO to change the camcorder to full auto mode. In full auto mode, th e camcorder automatical ly sets the iris, gain, shutter speed, and white balance. The camcor der will continuously adjust the brightness and white bala nce automatically*.
43 Recording Video Onscreen Displays Refer to this section for an explanation of the variou s scre en displays that appear in mode. Y ou can use the custom display function ( 0 108) to display or hide most of the scre en displays. Such screen di splays are denoted with an asterisk (*).
Recordin g Video 44 NOTES • Y ou can press the DISP . button to turn off most icons and displa ys. •W h e n t h e A icon appears next to the white ba lance, apertur e value, gain o r s hutter speed, it indicates that the setting is in auto mode.
45 Recording Video Power Save Mode Activate t he power save mode t o tu rn off the scr een and reduce ba ttery consumption. At the press of a butt on, the camcor der will immediately ret urn to re cord p aus e mod e. 1 Hold the POWER SA VE button pr essed down for at least 2 seconds.
Video Configuration: Bit Rate, Resolution and Frame Rate 46 Video Configuration: Bit Rate, Resolution and Frame Rate Before you r ecord, select the bit rate , resolution (frame size) and frame rate that best match your creative needs. 1 Open the [Bit Rate/Resolution] submenu to set the bit rate and resolution.
47 Custom Button and Dial Custom Button and Dial Y ou can assign to the C USTOM button an d dial one of several frequently used functi ons. Y ou can then adjust the selected function using the CUSTOM button and dial, without having to access the men u.
Adjusting the Focus 48 Adjusting the Focus This camcor der features the foll owin g two methods for adjusting the focus. Manual focus (MF): Use the manual ring to adjust the focus. Y ou can use the peaking an d magnificatio n functions to help you fo cus more accurately .
49 Adjusting the Focus NOTES • Using the subject distance display on the screen: - When the camcorder switches out of autofocus mode or when you adjust the fo cus with the manual ring, the approximate subject distance is displayed on the scr een for approximately 3 seconds.
Adjusting the Focus 50 Magnification Press the MAGN. but ton. • i appears on the bottom of the scr een and the center of the scr een is magnified appr oximately 2 times*. • Press the button agai n to cancel the function. * The magnification that appears on the LC D scr een and on the viewfinder scr een is different.
51 Adjusting the Focus Options NOTES • When recor ding in bright surroundings, the camcorder cl oses down the apertur e. This may cause the picture to appear blurred and is mor e noticea ble toward the wide-angle end of the zoom range. In such case, set the [ l Camera Setup] [ND Filter] setting ( 0 145) to [Automatic].
Adjusting the Focus 52 Options NOTES • The camcor der may mistakenly detect the faces of non- human subjects. In such cas e, turn face detection off. • In certain cases, faces may not be detected correctly . T ypical examples include: - Faces extre mely small, large, dark or br ight in relation to the overal l picture.
53 Image Stabilize r Image Stabilizer Use the image stabili zer to compensate for cam corder shake in or der to achieve steadier shots. Ther e are 3 me thods of image stabilization; select the method that best suits your needs.
Gain 54 Gain The gain control adjusts the level of the video sign al generated depending on the lighting and shooting conditions. Y o u can select automatic or manual gain contr ol. Automatic Gain Contro l (AGC) The camcor der automatically adjusts the gain based on the subject’ s brightness.
55 Gain Manual Gain Control Y ou can manually adjust the ga in of the 3 preset gain le vels (L: low , M: middle, H: high). Each level can be set independently . Y ou can also fine-tun e the gain in 0.5 dB increments. Assigning Gain Values Y ou can assign separate gain values to the L, M and H preset le vels.
Shutter Speed 56 Shutter Speed Set the shutter speed based on the recor ding conditio ns. For example, you may want to set slower shutter speeds in darker envir onments. The camcorder offers the following 6 modes. Off: The camcorder uses a sta ndard shutter speed based on the frame rate.
57 Shutter Speed Changing the Shutter Speed Mode 1 Open the [Shutter] submenu. [ l Camera Setup] [Shutter] 2 Select the desired mode and then press SET . 3 Close the menu and then press the SHUTTER button. • If you selected [Automatic], the shutte r speed mode is set to automatic and you do not need to perform the rest of the procedur e.
Adjusting the Ape rture 58 Adjusting the Apertur e Y ou can affect the brightness of your re c ordings or change the depth of fie l d by adjusting the aperture. Incr ease the apertur e value (F8) so that objects that ar e close an d far away will be in focus.
59 Adjusting the Aperture • When you set the apertur e value manually , it is not r etained if you activate automatic apertur e contr ol (excluding full auto mode). The apertur e value set automatically by the camcorder will be retained when you switch back to manual aperture control.
White Balanc e 60 White Balance The camcor der uses an electronic whi te balance proce ss to calibrate the pictur e for accurate color display under differ ent lighting conditions. There ar e 4 methods of setting the white balance. Auto white balance: The c amcorder automati cally adjusts the white balance to the optimal leve l.
61 White Balance 3 Close the menu and then press the WB button. • Press the button repeatedly until the icon of the desi red setting appears in the lower l eft of the screen. Options Fine-tuning the Preset White Balance Y ou can fine-t une the [Daylight ] and [T ungsten] sett ings within a range of -9 to 9.
White Balanc e 62 Custom White Balance Y ou can store two custom white bala nc e settings in the camcor der for future use. 1 Press the WB button to select the F A or F B custom setting. •T h e F A or F B appears next to the color temperat ure on the screen.
63 Zooming Zooming Y ou can operate the zoom (up to 10x) using the zoom rocker on the side grip or t he one on the handle. Y ou can also use the manual ring or the zoom butt ons on the wi rele ss co nt rol le r . Fo r z oo ms with a gradual start and/or stop, use soft zoom control ( 0 66).
Zooming 64 Using the G rip Zoom Rocke r Use the functions in the [ l Camera Setup] [Zoom] submenus to set the zoom speed. When you select a constant zoom speed, set one of 16 constant speeds (1 is the slowest, 16 the fastest). W ith a variable zoom speed, press gentl y for a slow zoom; pr ess harder for faster zooms.
65 Zooming Using the Handl e Zoom Rocker Use the functions in the [ l Camera Setup] [Zoom] submenus to set the zoom speed. Move the zoom ro cker toward Q to zoom out (wide-angle) and toward P to zo om in (telephoto). Setting the Zoom Speed Refer to the following table for approximate zoom speeds of the entir e zoom range (e nd to end).
Zooming 66 Setting the Zoom Speed Perform the following procedur e to set the zoom speed for the supplied wireless contr oller . Refer to the follo wing table for a summary of zoom speeds when using the wireless cont r oller or other r emote controls .
67 Using Optional Conversion Lenses Using Optional Conversion Lenses Attaching the optional TL-H58 T ele-conve rter increases the focal length of the camcor der by a factor of appr ox imately 1.5. Attaching the optional WD-H58W Wide-converter decreases the foc al length by a factor of approximately 0.
Onscreen Mark ers and Zebra Patterns 68 Onscr een Markers and Zebra Patter ns Using onscreen markers allows you to make sur e your subject is correctl y fr amed and is within the appropriate safe ar ea. The zebra patterns help you identify ar eas th at are over exposed.
69 Onscreen Mark ers and Zebra Patterns Options NOTES • If you set an assignable button to [Markers] ( 0 97), you can press the button to activate the onscr een markers. Displaying Zebra Patterns This camcorder has a zebra pattern feature that shows black and white diagonal stripe s over areas that are over exposed.
Setting the Time Code 70 Setting the Time Code The camcorder can generate a time co de signal and embe d it in your recor dings. Y ou can have the camcorder output the time code signal from the HD/SD SDI terminal ( b only) or GENLOCK/TC terminal ( b only; 0 75).
71 Setting the Time Code 4 Change the r est of the fields (minut es, seconds, frame) in the same way . • Press the CANCEL button to close the screen without setting the time code. 5 Select [Set ] to close the screen. • If the running mode is set to [Free Run], th e time c ode will start running immediately .
Setting the Time Code 72 NOTES • When the [ J Other Functions] [Frame Rate] setting is set to [24P], the fr ames value in the time code runs from 0 to 23.
73 Setting the User Bit Setting the User Bit The user bit display can be sele cted from the date or the time of recor ding, or an identifi ca tion code consisting of 8 characters in the hexadecimal system. Ther e are sixtee n possible character s: the numbers 0 to 9 and the letters A to F .
b Synchronizing with an External Device 74 b Synchronizing with an External Device Using genlock synchr onization, you can synchronize this camcor der's video sign al to that of an external video device. Similarly , using an exter nal time code signal, you can synchr onize this camcorder's time c ode to the external signal.
75 b Synchronizing with an External Device 1 Open the [Genlock/TC T erm.] submenu. [ J Other Functions] [Genlock/TC T erm.] 2 Select [Gen/TC In] and then press SET . Recording the User Bit of an External Signal The user bit of an external time code signal can also be recor ded with the time code it self.

77 Recordin g Audio Recor ding Audio The camcor der features two-channel linear PCM audio recor ding and playb ack with a sampling frequency of 48 kHz. Y ou can r ecord audio using the buil t-in microphone , optional external micropho ne (X LR o r M IC t er min al) or line input (XLR terminal).
Recording Au dio 78 Activating the Microphone Attenuat or If the audio level is too high and the sound sounds distorted when recor ding with the built -in micr ophone or a microphone connected to the MIC terminal, activate the microphone attenuator (1 2 dB for the buil t-in microphone, 20 dB for an external microphone).
79 Recordin g Audio Switching Between External Microphone and Line Input 1 Set the AUDIO IN switch of the desired channel to EXT . 2 Set the XLR terminal switch of th e desired channel to LINE or MIC. • T o supply a microphone with phantom power , set the switc h to MIC+48V instead.

81 Recordin g Audio Manual Audio Level Adjustment Y ou can set the audio level for each c hannel manually from - f to 18 dB. 1 Set the audio level switch of the de sired channel to M. 2 T ur n the corr esponding audio level dial to adjust th e audio level.
Using Metadata 82 Using Metadata The camcor der automatically adds metadata to clips whil e they are being recor ded. Metadata consists of the user -defined user memo* and recor ding data, such as shutter speed, exposure and focus settings. Y ou can use the supplied Canon XF Utility software to check and sear ch for specific metadata .
83 Color Bars/Au dio Reference Signal Color Bars/Audio Reference Signal Y ou can have the camcorde r generate and r ecord colo r bars and a 1 kHz audio refer ence signal and output them from the HD/SD SDI terminal ( b only), HDMI OUT terminal, HD/SD COMPONENT OUT terminal 1 , A V terminal and W (headphone) terminal 2 .
Video Scopes 84 Video Scopes The camcorder can displa y a simplified waveform monitor . It can also display an edge monitor* to help you focus. The video scopes appear only on the LCD screen. They do not app ear in the viewfinder or on an external monitor .
85 Video Scopes Configuring the Edge Monitor Using this video scope allows you to focus with more precision when the camcorder is i n manual focus mode . The edge monitor features 2 modes. 1 Open the [Edge Monitor] submenu. [ J Other Functions] [WFM (LCD)] [Edge Monitor ] 2 Select the desired option and then press SET .
Adding Shot Marks while Re cording 86 Adding Shot Marks while Record ing When recor ding, you can flag an important shot in a clip by adding a “shot mark” ( n ). There ar e two ty pes of shot marks, shot mark 1 ( c ) and s hot mark 2 ( d ), and you can add either or both types to a single clip.
87 Reviewing a Re cording Reviewing a Recor ding When the camcor der is in mode, yo u can r eview the last clip that was recor ded. 1 Open the [Rec Review] submenu to set the review length. [ J Other Functions] [Rec Review] 2 Select the desired option and then press SET .
Special R ecording Modes 88 Special Recor ding Modes The camcor der features 4 spe cial recor ding modes. Interval recor ding ([Interval Rec]): The camcor der will automatically r ecord a pre-defined n umber of frames at a pre-defined interval.
89 Special Recording Modes 4 Press the ST ART/STOP button again to stop recording. • All of the r ecorded fram es are joined together into one clip. • The tally lamps go out and [INT STBY] appears at the top of the scr een (with [INT] flashing). NOTES • Y ou can use only one specia l recor ding mode at a time.
Special R ecording Modes 90 NOTES • Y ou can use only one special recording mode at a time. • While recor ding, you cannot ch ange the number of frames. • Some frames at the point the r eco rding was stopped may be recorded and added to the end of the clip.
91 Special Recording Modes 3 Press the ST ART/STOP but ton to begin recording. • The camcor der automatically r ecords a t the set frame rate. • The tally lam ps illuminate. • [S&F STBY] changes to [ N S&F REC] while recor ding. 4 Press the ST ART/STOP button again to stop recording.
Special R ecording Modes 92 NOTES • Y ou can use only one special recording mode at a time. • Pre-r ecording mode will be deactivated if the special r e cording mode is changed or turned of f. It will be deactivated also if you chan ge the video configuration.
93 Infrared Recording Infrared Recor ding This camcorder featur es the abili ty to sh oot movies in dark surroundings usin g the camcor der's infrared l ight and other sources of infrared light. Al so, you can select whet her the lighter ar eas of the pictur e appear in gr een or white.
