Safety Precautions 11 Caution Denotes the possibility of injury. • Be careful not to bang the camera or subject it to strong impacts or shocks when hanging it by the strap. • Be careful not to bump or push strongly on the lens. This could lead to injury or damage the camera.
Safety Precautions 12 • Do not sit down with the camera in your pocket. Doing so may cause malfunctions or damage the screen. • When putting the camera in your bag, ensure that ha rd objects do not come into contact with the screen. • Do not attach accessories to the strap.
13 Getting Started This chapter explains preparations before shooting, how to shoot in A mode, and then how to view and erase the images you take. The latter part of this chapter explains how to shoot and view images and movies in Easy mode, and how to transfer images to a computer.

Inserting the Batteries and Memory Card 15 Insert the batteries. ● Insert the batteries w ith (+) and (-) ends oriented co rrectly. Insert the memory card. ● Insert the me mory card as shown until it locks into place with a click. ● Be sure the memor y card is orient ed correctly .

18 The Date/Time se ttings screen will appear th e first time th e camera is turn ed on. Since th e dates and times re corded into yo ur images are ba sed on these settings, b e sure to s et them. Turn on the camera. ● Press the powe r button. X The Date/Time screen will ap pear.
Setting the Date and Time 19 Changing the Date an d Time You can change the current da te and time set tings. Display the menus . ● Press the n but ton. Choose [Date/Time] in th e 3 tab. ● Press the qr buttons to choo se the 3 tab. ● Press the op buttons or turn the  dial to choose [Dat e/Time], then press the m button.
20 You can change the langua ge that display s on the screen. Enter Playback mode. ● Press the 1 butt on. Display the settings screen . ● Press and hold the m button, then immediately p ress the n butt on. Set the disp lay languag e. ● Press the opqr buttons or turn the  dial to choos e a language, th en press the m button.
21 Before you use a new memory card or one that has been for matted in other devices, you should f ormat the card with thi s camera. Formattin g (initializing) a memory card erases al l data on the memor y card. As you canno t retrieve the erased data, exercise adequat e caution before formatting the memory card.
Pressing the Shutter Button 22 To take imag es that are in focus, be sure to first press the shutter button lightly (hal fway) to focu s, then pre ss fully to shoot. Press halfway (Press lightly to focus). ● Press lightl y until the ca mera beeps twic e and AF frames app ear where the ca mera focused.
23 Since the cam era can determi ne the subje ct and shooti ng conditions, you can let it automa tically sele ct the best settings fo r the scene a nd just shoot . The camera can a lso detect an d focus on face s, setting the color and b rightness to optimal leve ls.
Taking Pictures (Smart Auto) 24 Focus. ● Press the shutter butto n halfway to focus. X When the came ra focuses, it will beep twice and AF fram es will ap pear wh ere the camera focused. Several AF fr ames will appear wh en the camera focus es on more t han one poin t.

26 You can view th e images you ha ve taken on the screen. Enter Playback mode. ● Press the 1 butt on. X The last image y ou took will ap pear. Choose an image. ● Pressing q or turning the  dial counter- clockwise w ill cycle through t he images in the reverse or der they were taken, fro m the newest image to the oldest.
27 You can cho ose and er ase images o ne at a time . Please no te that eras ed images canno t be recovered . Exercise ade quate caution before erasi ng an image. Enter Playback mode. ● Press the 1 butt on. X The last image y ou took will ap pear. Choose an image to erase .
28 In Easy mode, op erational ins tructions are displayed on t he screen, and t he camera is set so that only the bu ttons expla ined on this page and the zoom lever are functional . This prev ents incor rect operat ion of the camera, all owing even beginn ers to take worr y-free pic tures.
29 The camera can aut omaticall y select all sett ings so that you can shoot movies just by pres sing the shut ter button. The audio will re cord in stere o. Enter E mode. ● Set the mode dial to E . Compose the shot. ● Moving the zoom lev er toward i will zoom in on your sub ject, making it appear larger.
Shooting Movies 30 X Recording wi ll start, and [ z Rec] and the elapsed time will appear on th e screen. ● Once shooti ng begins, take your fi nger off the shutter but ton. ● If you chan ge the compo sition of yo ur shot during shoot ing, the focus , brightness a nd tone will automatica lly adjust.

50 Perform low lev el formatti ng when [Memory c ard error] ap pears, the ca mera does not oper ate prope rly, or you think that the reco rding/read ing speed of a memory card has dropped. As you ca nnot retriev e the eras ed data, exer cise adequate ca ution befor e formatting th e memory card.
Low Level Memory Card Formatting 51 • Low level formatting may take longer than standard for matting (p. 21), since all recorded data is erased. • You can stop a low level format of a memory card by choosing [S top]. When stopping low level formatting, the data will be erase d but the memory card can be used without problem.

53 Shooting with Commonly Used Functions This chapter explains how to shoot in different conditions, as well as how to use common functions, such as the self-timer. • This chapte r assumes the camera is set to A mode for “Zooming in More Closely on Subjects (D igital Zoom)” (p .
54 You can use the di gital zoom to zoo m up to a maximum of app roximately 48x and capture subjects that are to o far away for th e optical zoom to enl arge. The images may appe ar coarse, how ever, depe nding on the re cording pixe l setting (p . 70) and the zoom fa ctor used.
Zooming in More Closely on Subjects (Digital Zoom) 55 Digital Tele-Converter The focal lengt h of the lens can be incre ased by approxima tely 1.5x or approximat ely 2.0x. Thi s enables a fas ter shutter sp eed and less chance of camera shake t han the zoom (in cluding digi tal zoom) used b y itself at the same zoom facto r.
56 You can inser t the shooting d ate and time in the lower right corner of an image. Once in serted, ho wever, the y cannot be deleted. B e sure to c heck beforehand that the d ate and time are correc tly set (p. 1 8). Choose [Date Stamp]. ● Press the n but ton.
57 The self-ti mer can be used to shoot a gr oup phot o that inclu des the photograph er. The camera will sh oot approximat ely 10 seconds afte r the shutter but ton is pr essed. Press the p button. Choose Ò . ● Press the op buttons or turn the  dial to choose Ò , then press the m b utton.

Using the Self-Timer to Prevent Camera Shake 76 Custom Color The contra st, sharpne ss, color s aturation, r ed, green, bl ue, and ski n tones in an image can be c hosen and set at 5 different levels. ● Follow Step 2 on p. 75 to choose , then press the l button.
77 You can set th e time delay (0 – 30 seconds) an d the number of sho ts (1 – 10 shots). Choose $ . ● After pressi ng the p button, pres s the op buttons or turn the  di a l to c h o os e $ , then press the n button immediately. Choose th e settings.
78 You can use a T V to display the ca mera screen con tent while sh ooting. • To connect the camera to a TV, follow the S teps in “V iewing Im ages on a TV” (p. 117). • Shooting pr ocedures are t he same as when usi ng the camera scr een. 80 You can change the AF (Auto Focu s) frame mode to match the scene y ou want to shoo t. Choose [AF Frame]. ● After pressi ng the n button, cho ose [AF Frame] in th e 4 tab, the n press the qr butt ons to cho ose an o ption. Center The AF frame is locked to the center.
Shooting with the AF Lock 81 The focus can be loc ked. After l ocking the fo cus, the fo cal distanc e will not change ev en when you release yo ur finger fr om the shutt er button. Lock the focus. ● Keep the shutt er button pres sed halfway and press the q button.
82 If you press the sh utter button halfway, the AF frame will magn ify and you can check the fo cus. Choose [AF-Poi nt Zoom]. ● Press the n button to choose [AF- Point Zoom] i n the 4 tab, then press the qr butt ons to cho ose [O n]. Check the focu s.
83 While the shu tter button is pressed half way, the focu s and exposure wi ll continue t o adjust, al lowing you to tak e pictures of moving subjec ts without missing a sh ot. Choose [Servo AF]. ● Press the n button to choose [Servo AF] in the 4 ta b, then press the qr buttons to ch oose [On].
84 You can choose a specific per son’s face t o focus on and th en shoot. Set the AF frame to [Face Detect] (p. 80). Enter Face Select mode. ● Point the camera toward th e face of th e subject and p ress the 0 button. X After [Face Select : On] a ppears, a fa ce frame will appe ar around the f ace detected as t he main subjec t.
85 You can change the metering me thod (brightn ess measuring function) to match the sh ooting con ditions. Choose the metering method. ● After pressi ng the m button, pr ess the op buttons to choose . 86 You can u se manual f ocus when auto focus is not possible. If you pre ss the shutter butt on halfway afte r roughly foc using manually , you can fine tune the focus. Choose . ● After pres sing the q button, press the qr buttons or turn the  di al to choos e , then press th e m button.

89 You can set th e shutter to the speed at wh ich you want t o shoot. The ca mera will set the a ppropriate aperture v alue for the s hutter spee d you set. M stands for “ Time value” . Set the mode dial to M . Make the setting. ● Turn the  dial to set the shutter speed.
90 You can set th e aperture to a value at whic h you want to shoo t. The camera will set the a ppropriate shutter sp eed for the aperture v alue you set. B stands for “Apert ure value” , which refers to the siz e of the ape rture opening insid e the lens.
91 You can manual ly set the shut ter speed and ape rture to shoo t images. D stands for “Manu al”. Set the mode dial to D . Make the setting. ● Press the b button to choose the shutter speed or apert ure value. ● Turn the  di al to set a value.
92 The camera can d etect areas i n the scene, such as faces or backg rounds, that are too brig ht or dar k and aut omatically adjust the m to th e optimum brightness when shootin g. Also, wh en the overall image is lacki ng in contra st, the camera wil l automatic ally correct the image for a sh arper impres sion when shoot ing.
93 You can automa tically corre ct red-eye t hat occurs in im ages taken wit h the flash. Choose [Flash Settings]. ● Press the n button to choose [Flash Settings ] in the 4 tab, then press the m button. Adjust the setting. ● Press the op buttons or turn the  dial to choose [Red -Eye Corr.
94 Just like wit h Exposure Com pensation (p . 68), you can adj ust the exposu re ±2 stops in 1/3-stop in crements w hen using the flash. Choose ~ . ● After pressi ng the m button, pr ess the op buttons to choose ~ .
95 In D mode, you can choose 3 levels of flash output. Set the mode dial to D . Choose Flash Outpu t. ● After pressi ng the m button, pr ess the op buttons to choose ~ . Make the setting. ● Press the qr buttons or turn the  dial to choose the amount of Flash Output, then press the m button.
96 You can change t he look of an image wh en shooting. However, depend ing on shooting co nditions the i mage may become coarse, or the col ors may not come out as expect ed. Color Accent You can choo se to reta in a single co lor and ch ange the res t to black and white in a compos ition.
Changing the Color and Shooting 97 Color Swap You can swap one color in an im age for anoth er when recordi ng it. You can only swap one c olor. Choose Y . ● Follow Steps 1 – 2 on p. 59 to choos e Y . Press the l button. X The unchanged ima ge and the Color Sw ap image will al ternately di splay.
Changing the Color and Shooting 98 Specify the range of colors to be swapped. ● Press the op but tons or tu rn the  dial to adjust th e range of co lors to be changed. ● Choose a negat ive value t o limit the range of colors . Choose a positi ve value to extend the range of c olors to s imilar color s.
