Preparations 23 Preparations This chapter desc ribes basic oper ations, such as usi ng the touch panel, navigati ng the menus, and firs t time settings to help you learn more about your camcorder . Getting Started Charging the Battery P ack The camcorder can be power e d with a battery pack or directly using the compact power adapter .
24 Preparations 5 Charging will start when the camcorder is turned off. • If the camcorder was on, the green ON/OFF (CHG) indicator will go out when you turn off the camcorder . After a moment, the ON/OFF (CHG) indicator will star t flashi ng in red (battery pack charging).
Preparations 25 • T o prevent equipment breakdowns an d excessive heating, do not con- nect the supplied compact power adapter to voltage converters for overseas travels or special power so ur ces such as those on aircraft and ships, DC-AC inverters, etc.
26 Preparations Preparing the Accessories Wireless Controll er First, insert the supplied CR2025 lithium button battery into the wire- less contr oller . 1 Press the tab in the direction of the arrow and pull out the battery holder . 2 Place the lithium bu tton battery with the + side facing up.
Preparations 27 Grip Belt and Str aps Fasten the grip belt. Adjust the grip belt so that you can reach the zoom lever with your index finger , and the g butt on with your thumb. To remove the gr ip belt 1 Lift the padded handgrip's flap and detach the strap fr om the V elcro pad.
28 Preparations To attach an optional wrist strap Pass the attaching end of the wrist strap through the r ear bracket on the camcorder , thread the wrist strap through the loop and fasten. Y ou can also attach the wrist strap to the strap mount on the grip belt to use both for extra convenience a nd protec tion.
Preparations 29 NOTES • About the LCD scree n: The screen is produced using extr emely high-pre- cision manufacturing tech niques, with more than 99.99% of the pixels operating to specification. Less than 0.01% of the pixels may occasion- ally misfire or appear as black, red, blue or gr een dots.
30 Preparations Basic Operation of the Camcorder Using the T ouch Screen The control buttons and me nu items that appear o n the touch screen change dynamicall y depending on the operatin g mode and the task you are performing. With the intuitive touch sc ree n interface you have all the contr ols at your fingertips .

Operating Modes Recording When recording video or photos, the cam corder’ s ope rating mode is determined by the position of the mode switch and the onscr een con- trol buttons.
32 Preparations NOTES • e When switching to a playback mode, the memory selected for playback will be the same currently used for recor ding. • Y ou can also press and hold B on the wireless controller for mor e than 2 seconds to switch between recording and playback mode.

34 Preparations NOTES • A small font size is used in menu screens so you can see the options currently selected. Y ou can enla rge the font size by setting 6 8 [Font Size] to [ A Large] but only the icons of the currently selected options will appear on the screen.
Preparations 35 First Time Settings Setting the Date and Time Y ou will need to set the date and time of the camcor der befor e you can start using it. The [Date/ Time] scr een will appear automati cally when the cam- corder’ s clock is not set.
36 Preparations Changing the Language The default language of the camcorder is English. Y ou can set it to one of 22 other languages. * Only when performing the pr ocedure in a r ecor ding mode. NOTES • Some control buttons, su ch as [ZOOM], [FUNC.
Preparations 37 Using a Memor y Card Memor y Cards Compatible for Use with the Camcorder Y ou can use comm ercially available SDHC (SD high c apacity) memory cards and SD memory c a rds with this camcor der . How- ever , de pending on the memo ry card , you may not be able to r ecord movies.
38 Preparations Inserting and Removing a Memor y Card Make sure to initialize ( 0 40) all me mory car ds be fore using them with this camcorder . 1 T ur n off the camcorder . Make sure the ON/OFF (C HG) indicator is off. 2 Open the memory card slot cover .

42 Dual Shot Mode Dual Shot Mode This chapter cove rs how to easily record video and photos in the all-automatic Dual S hot mode, and how to use basic sh oot- ing functions like zoom and Quic k Start. 44 Dual Shot Mode IMPORT ANT • Observe the following precautions while the ACCESS indicator is on or flashing. Failing to do so may result in permanent data loss or damage to the memory . - Do not open the memory card slot cover . - Do not disconnect the power source or turn off the camcorder .
Dual Shot Mode 45 • Be sure to save your recor dings regularly ( 0 1 26), especially after making important recor dings. Canon shall not be liable for any loss or corruption of data. • When recor d ing photos on an Eye-Fi card, photos will be uploaded automatically if you are within the ra nge of a configured network.
46 Dual Shot Mode Zooming There a re thr ee ways you ca n zoom in and out: using the zoom lever on the camcorder , using the zoom buttons on the wireless controller or using the zoom controls on the touch scr een. In addition to th e 15x optical zoom *, in mode, you can tur n on the 300x digital zoom with the 7 8 [Digital Zoom] setting.
Dual Shot Mode 47 2 T ouch the zoom controls to operate the zoom. T ouch anywher e within the Q area to zoom out or anywhere within the P area to zoom in. T ouch closer to the center for a slow zoom ([Speed 1]); touch clos er to the e / d icons for faster zooms ([Speed 3]).
48 Dual Shot Mode 2 When you wish to resume recording, open the LCD panel. The ON/OFF (CHG) indicat or turns b ack green and the camcorder is ready to recor d. IMPORT ANT • Do not disconnect the power source during standby mode (while the ON/OFF (CHG) indicator is lit in orange).

54 Video 3D Flip View 3D Flip Vi ew is a fun way to display yo ur video r ecording s (original scenes) in a 3D layout, or ganized by recording date. In any index screen, touch [ b ] 8 [3D Flip View]. During single photo view , touch the screen once to display the controls then touch [ Q ] to open the [Photos] index screen.
Video 55 Narrowing Down the Scenes Shown in the Index Screen From the [Orig inal] index scr een, you can narr ow down the scenes shown, leaving only scen es that were recor ded on a specific date or only those scenes in which peo ple's faces wer e detected.
56 Video 2 Open the calendar screen. • Dates that contain scenes (that i s, movie s were r ecorded on that date) appear in black against a silver background. Dates without recordings appear grayed out. •T o u c h [ y ] or [ A ] to jump to the previous/next calendar month that contains recordings.
Video 57 3 T ouch on the individual scenes you want to delete. • A checkmark O will appear on scenes selected. T ouch a sele cted scene again to remove the checkmark. • T o select all the scenes at once : T ouch [Select All] instead of touching individual scenes.
58 Video Advanced Functions Shooting Video in y Manual Mode When the mode switch is set to y (Manual mode), you can enjoy full access to the menus and manually adjust the exposur e, focus, white balance and many mor e of the ca mcorder's s ettings to your pr efer- ence.

60 Video Special Scene Recording Programs Recording in a very bright ski r esort or capturing the full colors of a sunset or a fi reworks display become s as easy as se lecting a Spec ial Scene recording program. 62 Video NOTES •[ F Portrait] /[ G Sports]/[ I Snow]/[ J Beach]: The pict ur e may not appear smooth during playback. •[ F Portrait] : The blur effect of the background increases the mor e you zoom in ( P ). •[ I Snow]/[ J Beach]: The subject may bec ome overexposed on cloudy days or in shaded places .
Video 63 - p will appear on the screen when the camcord er's temperature becomes too high. If this happens, tur n off the camcorder , take it out of the waterproof case and keep it in a cool place until the temperature goes down. If the camcorder becomes too hot, it will tur n off automatically .
64 Video To change the fram e rate Advanced Image Stabilization The image stabil izer reduces camcor der blur (blur due to the cam- corder moving) so yo u can get nice , stable shots. S elect the image s ta- bilization mode according to the shooting conditions.
Video 65 NOTES • If the degree of camcorder shake is too high, the image stabilizer may not be ab le to ful ly compen sate. • Power ed IS is not available in mode. • For surveying and foll owing shots, when you p an the camcorder from side to side or tilt it up and down, we recommend setting the IS mode to [ P Dynamic] or [ Q Standard].
66 Video 1 Activate the pre-recording function. • d appears. • Repeat, selecting [ B Off], to turn off pre-r eco rding. 2 Press g . The scene recorded in the memory will start 3 seconds before g was pressed. NOTES • While pre-re cording is activated, the camcorder will not emit any notifi- cation sounds.
Video 67 POINTS TO CHECK • Select a recording pr ogram other than [ q Night Scene] , [ p Low Light], [ M Fireworks] or [ r Underwater]. By default, face detection is activa ted. If the function was turned off, per- form the following pro cedure to turn it on.
68 Video T ouch & T rack Wh en rec ord in g p eo pl e, fa ce de te ct io n ( 0 66) will track the main sub- ject and keep i t always i n focus.
Video 69 1P r e s s z . • A blue border appears on the screen. • Press z again to return to normal video recording mode. 2P r e s s g . • By default, the camcorder recor d s for about 4 seconds (the blue frame serves as a visual progress bar) and then automatically returns to record pause mode.
70 Video To fade in/out Press g in recor d pause mode ( M ) to start recording with a fade in. Pr ess g while r ecording ( N ) to fade out and pause the reco rding. Options ( Default value) NOTES • When you apply a fader , not only the pictur e but also th e sound will fad e in or out.
Video 71 Options ( Default value) NOTES •[ B Shutter -Pri. AE]: - On screen only the denominator is displayed – [ B 250] indicates a shutter speed of 1/250 sec ond, etc.
72 Video Shutter Speed and Ap erture V alue Guidelines X With slower shutter speed you can add a nice motion blur and sense of movement. With faster shutter speeds you can “freeze th e action” for powerful images of moving subjects. W X With small aperture values only the subject is in focus and the background is softly blurred.
Video 73 Manual Exposure Adjustment At times, backlit subjects may appe ar too dark (underexposed) or sub- jects under very str ong lights may appear too bright or glar ing (over e x- posed).
74 Video NOTES • If the recording pr ogram is change d during exposure lock, the cam- corder will return to automatic exposur e. • When shooting subj ects with a strong light source behind them, the camcorder automatically corrects for th e backlight.
Video 75 POINTS TO CHECK • Adjust the zoom before you start the procedure. 1 Open the manual focus screen. 2 T ouch a subject that appears inside the X frame. • The T ouch AF mark ( P ) will fl ash and t he focus ing dist ance will be adjusted automatically .
76 Video White Balance The white balance f unction helps you to accurately reproduce colors under differ ent lighting conditions so that white objects will always look truly white in your recor dings. POINTS TO CHECK • Select a record ing program other th an the Special Scene r ecording pr o- grams.
Video 77 NOTES • When you select the custom white balance: -S e t 7 8 [Digit al Zoom] to [ B Off] . - Reset the white balance when you ch ange locations or the lighting or other conditio ns change. - Depending on the light source, g may keep flashing.
78 Video Options ( Default value) Mini Video Light Y ou can turn on the mini video light to shoot video or take photos in dark places. POINTS TO CHECK • Select a recor ding program other than [ r Underwater] or [ s Surface]. • Y appears on the screen.
Video 79 NOTES • We r ecommend not using the mini vi deo light while the optional Wi de- converter or T ele-converter is att ached; its shadow can appear on the screen.
80 Video mode: Press j , first halfway to activate the autofocus and then fully . The camcorder will recor d the phot o after a 10-second countdown*. The countdown appears on the screen. * 2 seconds when using the wir eless controll er . NOTES • Once the countdown has begun, any of the following act ions will cancel the self timer .
Video 81 2 T ouch and hold [ y ] or [ A ] to adjust the audio recording level as necessary . As a guideline, adjust the audio recording level so that the audio level meter will go to the right of th e -12 dB mark (yellow area) only occasionally . 3T o u c h [ a ] to lock the audio recording level at the current level.
82 Video Using Headphones Use headphones for pla yback or to check the audio level while r ecord- ing. The headphones a re connect ed to the A V OUT/ X term inal, which is used for both the headphon es and the audio/video output.
Video 83 IMPORT ANT • When using headphones, make sure to lower the volume to an appro- priate level. • Do not connect the headphones to the AV OUT/ X terminal if the J icon does not appear on the screen . The noise output in such case may be harmful to your heari ng.
84 Video NOTES • Accessories designed for the Advanced Accesso ry Shoe cannot be used w ith this camcorder . Look for video accessories bearing this logo to ensure compatibility with the mini advanced shoe .
Video 85 Using other mi crophones Y ou can also us e commercially ava il- able microphones. Connect the exter- nal microphone to the MIC terminal. Use commer cially available condenser microphones with their own power supply. Y ou can connect almost any stereo micr ophone with a ∅ 3.
86 Video Attach the optional RA- V1 Remote Control Adapter to the mini advanced shoe. Refer to Using the Mini Advanced Shoe ( 0 83). appears. For details about using the adapter , refer to the instruction manual of the RA- V1. For details ab out using the zoom remote contr oller , refer to the instruction manu al of the ZR-2000 or ZR-1000.
Video 87 Selecting the Playback Starting Point If you have a very long sc ene, you may want to start playi ng back the scene from a certain poi nt. Y ou can use the movi e timeline to break the scene to segments at fixed time in tervals ranging from 6 seconds to 6 minutes.
88 Video To change the interva l between frames T o display change s in the scene’ s ma in subject • The timeline ruler will sh ow frames taken from the scene every time the main subject detected by the camcorder changed.
Video 89 Playing Back Scenes Set to Background Music Y ou can play back video snapshot sc enes, scenes in the playlist and photo slideshows set to ba ckground musi c (instead of the orig inal sound). Y ou can use o ne of the supplied musi c tracks or connec t an external audio player to use your favorite songs as background music.
90 Video 3 Back in the index screen, touch a scene to start the playback set to the selected music track. In mode, touch a photo to go to single photo view and continue with the slideshow procedure ( 0 113). To delete a music track In the music track sel ection scre en, touch [ Z ] or [ O ] to select the track you want to delete.
Video 91 2 Activate the exter nal audio input. 3 Connect the external player to the camcorder's MIC terminal. 4 Adjust the audio input as necessary . • Start the music playback on the exte rnal player and adjust its volume according to the onscreen indications.
92 Video NOTES • Y ou can also add to th e playlist just the vide o snapshot scenes you want to watch and arrange their playback order . • Initializing a memory card will permanently erase any music files you may have transferred to the card.

94 Video Playlist and Scene Operations Editing the Playlist: Adding, Deleting, Moving and Playing Back Create a playlist to play back onl y the scenes you prefer and in the order of y our choice. Y ou can play back the scenes in the pla ylist using your favorite so ng as background music ( 0 89).
Video 95 • e Y ou can copy scenes from the built-in memory to the mem- ory card ( 0 126) to include in the memory card’ s playlist also scenes that were originally recor d ed in the b uilt-in memory . Deleting Scenes from the Playlist Deleting scenes from the playlist wi ll not af fect your original r ecor dings.
96 Video Capturing Photos and Video Snapshot Scenes fro m a Movie Y ou can captur e video snapsho t scenes, single photo s or a series of continuous photos fr om a pre viously rec orded scene .
Video 97 NOTES • A video snapshot scene can be captu red only during playback; it c an- not be captured during pl ayback pause mode. • e The captured video snapshot scene is save d to the same memory that contains the source scene. • Video snapshot scenes cannot be ca ptured from any of the following types of scenes.
98 Video To capture the photos 1 Play back the scene fr om which you want to capture the photo. 2 Pause the playback at the point you want to capture. 3 Press j fully . T o capture a photo sequence, hold j pressed down. The scene will be played back by frames an d each frame captured as a separate photo.
Video 99 2 Select the scene you want to divid e and touch it to start playing it back. 3 Pause the playback at the point where you want to divide the scene. 4 Open the scene division screen. 5 Bring the scene to a precise point, if necessary . • During playback pause: T ouch [ A ] to play back the scene.
