19 Preparations This chapter de scribes basic ope rations, such as na vigating the menus, and first time se ttings to help you learn more about your camcor der . Charging the Battery Pack The camcorder can be power ed with a battery pack or di rectly using the compact power adapter .
Preparations 20 1 Slide the battery compartment cover away from the lens and open it. 2 Press the bat tery release l atch and pull out the battery pack. 3 Close the co ver and sl ide it towar d the lens until you hear a click. IMPORT ANT • T urn off the camcorder befor e connecting or disc onnecting the compact power adapter .
21 1 Press the tab in the dir ection of the arrow and pull out the battery holder . 2 Place the lithium button battery with the + side facing up. 3 Insert the battery holder . Point the wir eless contr oller at the camcorder’ s remote sensor when you pre ss the buttons.
Preparations 22 Pass the attaching end of the wrist strap thro ugh the back bracket on the camcorder , thread the wrist strap through the loop and fasten. Y ou can also attach the wrist strap to the strap mount on the grip belt to use both for extra conv enience and protection.

Preparations 24 Operating Modes The camcorder's o perating mode i s determined by the po sition of the mo de dial. In this manual, indicates that a function is ava ilable in the operati ng mode shown and indicates that the function is not available.

29 Recommended Memory Cards Y ou can us e commercially available SDHC (SD high capacity) me mory cards and SD me mory cards with this camcorder to reco rd m ov ies an d still images. However , depending on the memory card, yo u ma y not be able to recor d movies on it.
Preparations 30 2 Slide the memory ca rd slot cover away fr om the lens and open i t. 3 Insert the memory card straight, with the label fa cing away fr om the lens, all the way into the memory card slot until it clicks. 4 Close the co ver and sl ide it towar d the lens until you hear a click.

At full wide angle, you can focus on a subject as close as 1 cm (0.39 in.). • When [ZOOM SPEED] is set to [ V AR IABLE]: - When you us e the T and W buttons on the wireless controller or LCD panel, the zoom speed will be constant at [ SPEED 3].

39 Selecting Scenes by Recording Date Y ou can s earch for all the recordings you made on a part icular date, for example, to find all the movies you shot during a special event. POINTS TO CHECK Selecting scenes by recording date is available only fr om the original movies index screen.

41 Deleting Scenes Y ou can delete origi nal scenes th at you are not inter e sted in keeping. D eleting scenes also allows you to fr ee up space on the memory .

43 Controlling Shutter Speed and Other Functions while Shooting Use the automatic exposure (AE) program to use functi ons like the whit e balance or imag e effects, or give priority to the shutter speed. Use faster shutter speeds to record subjects movi ng quickly; Use slo wer shutter speeds to add motion blur , emphasizing the feel of movem ent.

Photos 58 Magnifying Photos during Playback During playback, still ima ges can be magnified up to 5 times. 1 Move the zoom lever toward T . • The image is magnif ied by 2 times and a frame appe ars indicating the position of the magnified area. • T o further enlar ge the image, mo ve the zoom lever toward T .
59 Drive Mode: Continuous Shooting and Exposure Bracketing T ake a series of pictur es of a moving subject or record the same picture in 3 levels of exposure in or der to choose later the picture you like the best. POINTS TO CHECK Select a r ecor ding mode other than [ FIREWORKS].
Photos 60 1 Press halfway to activate the autofocus. 2 Press fully and hold it pressed down. A series of stil l images will be recor ded as long as you hold the button pressed. Press , first halfway to activate the autofocus and then fully to record the still images.
61 4 Repeat steps 2-3 to protect additional images or pr ess twice to close the menu. IMPORT ANT Initializing the memo ry ( 30) will permanently erase all recordings, including protect ed still images. / Copying Photos Y ou can co py still images from the built- in memory to the memory c ard and vice versa.
Photos 62 NOTES • If there is not enough space on the destination memory , the camcorder will copy as many still images as possible before stopping the operation. • If the memory card slot cover is open, or the LOCK switch on the memory card is set to prevent writing , you will not be able to copy still imag es to the memory car d.

69 Saving your Recordings without a Computer If you prefer to save your rec ordings without having to use a computer , you can use the optional DW-100 DVD Burner to create DVD disc s of your movies and Photo DVDs of your still images ( 69). Y ou can also connect the camcor der to an external r ecord ing device (DVD or HDD r ecor der , VCR, etc.

83 Recording Pressing will not start recording. - Y ou cannot record while the camcorder is writing previ ous recording onto the memory (while the ACCESS indicator is on or flashing). - The memory is full or it already contains 999 scen es (the maximum number of scenes).
Additional Information 84 Indicators and Onscreen Displays lights up in red. - Batter y pack is exhausted. Replace or charge the battery pack ( 19). appears on the screen. - The camcorder cannot communicate with the battery pack attached so the remaini ng battery time cannot be displayed.
85 The picture is displayed correc tly but there is no sound from the built-in speaker . - Speaker volume is turned off. Adjust the volume ( 38). - If the STV-250N Stereo Video Cable i s connected to the camcorder , disconnect it. Memory Card and Accessories Cannot insert the memory card.

87 CANNOT PLA Y BACK CH ECK THE CARD - There is a problem with the memory card. / CANNOT PLA Y THE MOVIES IN THE BUIL T -IN MEMORY INITIALIZE USING ONL Y THE CAMCORDER - The camcorder's built-in memory was initialized using a computer . Initialize the built-in memory with this camcorder ( 30).
Additional Information 88 CHECK THE CARD - Cannot access the memory card. Check the memory card and make sure it i s inserted correctly ( 29). - A memory card error occurred.
89 READING THE CARD - Reading data from the memory card. SOME SCENES COULD NO T BE DELETED - Movies that were protected/edited with other devices cannot be de leted. T ASK IN PROGRESS DO NO T DISCONNECT THE POWER SOURCE - The camcorder is updating the memor y .
Additional Information 90 CLOSE THE MEMORY CARD SLOT COVER - The memory card slot cover is open. Close the cover after c orrectly inserting the memory card ( 29). CONNECT THE COMP ACT POWER ADAPTER - The camcorder is being powered by the battery pack .
91 COMMUNICA TION ERROR - The printer is experiencing a data transfer error . Cancel printing, disconnect the USB ca ble and turn off the printer . After a while, turn th e printer back on and r econnect the USB cable. When you are printi ng using the button, check the print settings.
Additional Information 92 PRINT ERROR - Cancel printing, disconnect the USB cable and turn off th e printer . After a w hile, turn the printer back on and reconnect the USB cable. Check the printer status. - When you are printing using the button, check the print settings.
93 Do’s and Do n’ts Camcorder Be sure to observe the following precautions to ensur e maximum performance. • Back up your recor dings periodically. Make sur e to transfer your recordings to an exte rnal de vice such as a computer or digi tal video recor der ( 68) and back them up on a re gular basis.
Additional Information 94 at temperatures not higher than 30 °C (86 °F). Batter y Pack • Attach the terminal cover whenev er a battery pack is no t in use. Contact with metallic objects may cause a short circuit and da mage the battery pack. • Dirty terminals may cause a po or contact between the battery pack and the camcorder .
95 • Do not disassemble, bend, drop, or subject memory ca rds to shocks and do not expose them to water . • Check the dir ection befor e inserting the memory card. Forcing a me mory card into the slot if it is not corr ectly oriented may dam age the memory card or the camcorder .
Additional Information 96 Disposal When you de lete movies or i nitialize the built-in memory ( / only) or memory card, only th e file a llocation table is altered and stor ed data is not physically eras ed.
97 Condensation may form in the following cases: • When the camcor der is moved quickly from cold to warm places • When the camcorder is left in a humid roo m • When a cold room is heated rapidly • Do not expose the camcorder to sudden or extre me changes in temperature.
