1 1 1 Memory Storage 1 Your menu settings are stored perm anently, and in the event of a power failure will not be lost. Tempor ary settings (for exampl e, Contrast, Overseas Mode) will be lost.
Chapter 1 2 Speaker volume 1 You can choose a range of speaker vo lume levels, from High to Off . a Press Menu , 1 , 3 , 3 . Volume 3.Speaker b Press a or b to choose Off , Low , Med or High . Press OK . c Press Stop/Exit . You can also adjust the speake r volume with the control panel keys.
General Setup 3 1 Ecology features 1 Toner Save 1 You can save toner usin g this feature. When you set Toner Save to On , print appears lighter. Th e default sett ing is Off . a Press Menu , 1 , 4 , 1 . Ecology 1.Toner Save b Press a or b to choose On or Off .
Chapter 1 4 Toner Settings 1 Toner Setting (Continue Mode) 1 You can set the machine to continue printing after the LCD shows Replace Toner . The machine will contin ue printing until the LCD shows Toner Ended . The default setting is Stop . a Press Menu , 1 , 8 .
General Setup 5 1 LCD Contrast 1 You can ch ange the co ntrast to make the LCD look lighter or darker. a Press Menu , 1 , 5 . General Setup 5.LCD Contrast b Press c to make the LCD darker. Or, press d to make the LCD lighter. Press OK . c Press Stop/Exit .
Chapter 1 6 Changing the prefix number 1 a Press Menu , 0 , 5 . b Do one of the following: To change the pre fix number, press 1 . To remove the pr efix number, pr ess Clear to delete the digits. Go to step c . To exit without making a cha nge, press 2 .
7 2 2 Security 2 You can set up your machine with multiple levels of security using TX Lock (For MFC-7360 and MFC-7460 DN) or Secure Function Lock 2.0 (For MFC-7860DW) an d Setting Lock. You will not be able to continue to schedule Delayed Faxes or Polling jobs.
Chapter 2 8 Secure Function Lock 2.0 (MFC-7860DW) 2 Secure Function Lock lets you restr ict Publi c access to the following machine functions: Fax Tx Fax Rx Copy Scan PC Prin t This feature also prevents users from changing the Default settings of the machine by limiting access to the Menu settings.
Security featur es 9 2 Setting up the public user mode 2 Public user mode restricts the functions that are available for Pu blic users. Public users do not need to enter a passwor d to access the features made available thro ugh this setting. You can set up one Public user.
Chapter 2 10 Turning Secure Function Lock of f a Press Menu , 1 , 6 , 1 . Security 1.Function Lock b Press a or b to choose Lock On i Off . Press OK . c Enter your fo ur-digit administrator password.
Security featur es 11 2 Setting Lock 2 Setting Lock lets you set a password to stop other people from accidentally changing your machine settings. Make a careful note of your password. If you forget it, you will have to reset the passwords stored in the machine.

Note •T h e Enter # twice setting will not work if you pick u p the exte rnal handset or press Hook befor e entering the num ber.
14 3 Additional sending options 3 Sending faxes using multiple settings 3 Before you send a fax, you can chan ge any combination of th ese settings: con trast, resolution, overse as mode, delayed fax tim er, polling transmission, real time tran smission or cover page settings.
Sending a fax 15 3 Changing Fax Resolution 3 The qualit y of a fax can be improved by changing the Fax Resolution. Resolutio n can be changed for the next fax or for all faxes. To change the Fax Resolution setting for the next fax 3 a Make sure you are in Fax mode .
Chapter 3 16 d Press Start . If you are using the scanner glass, press 1 to send a fax. e Replace the handset of an external telephone. Dual access 3 You can dial a number and start scanning the fax into memory—even when the machine is sending from memory, receiving faxe s or printing PC data.
Sending a fax 17 3 Canceling a Broadcast in progress 3 While broadcasting you can cancel the fax currently being sent or th e whole broadcast job. a Press Menu , 2 , 7 . The LCD will display the Broadcast job number follo wed by the fax number being dialed (for e xample, #001 123456789 ) and the b roadcast jo b number (for example, Broadcast#001 ).
Chapter 3 18 Overseas Mode 3 If you are having difficulty send ing a fax overseas due to a bad connection, then turning on Overseas M ode may he lp. This is a temporary setting, and will only be active for your next fax. a Make sure you are in Fax mode .
Sending a fax 19 3 Electronic cover page 3 This feature will not work unless you have already programmed your Station ID. (See the Quick Setup Guide .) You can automatically send a cove r page with every fax. Your co ver page include s your Station ID, a comment, and the name (or number) stored in the One Touch or Sp eed Dial memory.
Chapter 3 20 c Press a or b to choose On (or Off ). Press OK . d Press a or b to choose a comment. Press OK . Using a printed cover page 3 If you want to use a printed cover page that you can write on, you can print the sample page and attach it to your fax.
Sending a fax 21 3 h Place the next page on the sca nner glass, pres s OK . Repeat steps g and h for each additional page. The document will be stored in memory and wait to be polled. Note The document will be stored and can be retrieved from any othe r fax machine until you delete the fax from memory.
22 4 Remote Fax Options 4 Remote Fax Options le t you rece ive faxe s while you are away from the machine. You can use only one Remote Fa x Option at a time. Fax Forwarding 4 The Fax Forw arding featur e lets you automatically forward your received fa xes to another machine.
Receiving a fax 23 4 Paging 4 When Paging is chosen , the machine dials the cell phone number you pr ogrammed. This activates your cell phone or pager so you will know that you have a fax message in the machine’s memory. a Press Menu , 2 , 5 , 1 . Remote Fax Opt 1.
Chapter 4 24 b Press a or b to choose PC Fax Receive . Press OK . c The LCD shows a reminder to start the PC-FAX Receive progr am on your computer. If you have started the PC-FAX Receive progr am, press OK . If you have not started the PC-FAX Receive program, see PC-FAX receiving in the Software User’s Guide .
Receiving a fax 25 4 If you pres s 2 , faxes in the memory will not be erased or transferred to your PC and the setting will be unchanged. The LCD will ask you the following message: Backup Print On Press a or b to choose On or Off . Press OK . Press Stop/Exit .
Chapter 4 26 c The machine signals if it has received messages: No beeps No messages received. 1 long beep Fax message received. d The machine gives tw o short beep s to tell you to enter a comma nd (See Remote fax command s on page 27). The machine will hang up if you wait longer than 30 seconds before entering a command.
Receiving a fax 27 4 Remote fax commands 4 Follow the commands b elow to access features when yo u are away from the machin e. When you call the machine and enter your Remote Access Code (3 digits followed by l ), the system will give two short beeps and you must enter a remote command.
Chapter 4 28 Additional receiving operations 4 Printing a reduced incoming fax 4 If you choose On , the machine au tomatically reduces each page of an incoming fax to fit on one page of Letter, A4, Legal or Folio size paper.
Receiving a fax 29 4 d Replace the external ha ndset. Setting the Print Density 4 You can adjust the Print Density setting to make your printed p ages darker or li ghter. a Make sure you are in Fax mode . b Press Menu , 2 , 1 , 6 . Setup Receive 6.Print Density c Press c to make the print darker.
Chapter 4 30 Polling overview 4 Polling lets you set up y our machine so other people can receive faxes from you, but they pay for the call. It also lets you call somebody else’s fax m achine and receive a fax from it, so you pay for the call. The polling feature needs to be set up on both machines for this to work.
31 5 5 Telephone line services 5 For Fax/Tel mode only 5 When the machine is in Fax/Tel mode, it w ill use the F/T Ring Time (pseudo/double-ri nging) to alert you to pick up a voice call. Lift the external telephone’s handset, and then press Hook to answer.
Chapter 5 32 Installing machine, external two-line TAD and two-line telephone 5 When you are installing an external two-line telephone answering device (TAD) and a two-line telephone, your ma chine must be isolated on one lin e at both the wall jack and at the TAD.
Dialing and storing numbers 33 5 Additional dialing operations 5 Dialing access codes and credit card numbers 5 You can combine more than one Quick Dial number when you dial. This feature may be useful if you need to di al an access code for a cheaper rate from anothe r long distance carrier.
Chapter 5 34 For Speed Dia l numbers, press ( Address Book ) an d then enter the three-digit Speed Dial location. The LCD will display your chosen One Touch numbers with a l and Speed Dial numbers with a # (for example l 006, #009). e Press OK when you have finished adding number s.

Dialing and storing numbers 37 5 m Select the PDF type from PDF or SPDF (Secure PDF) that will be used to send to your PC. Press OK and then go to step n .
Chapter 5 38 f If you want to change the fax resolu tion for the Group, press a or b to choose the resolution you want. Press OK . g Press Stop/Exit . If you downloaded IFAX and E-mail options (MFC-7460DN and MFC-7860DW) 5 If you try to change a Group number , the LCD will show the name or number already stored there.
Dialing and storing numbers 39 5 g If you want to change the fax resolution for the Group, press a or b to choose the resolution you want. Press OK . For details, follow the directions beginning with step h in Options for Set ting Up Groups. (Se e Options for Settin g Up Groups on page 35).
40 6 Fax reports 6 Some fax reports (transmission verification and fax journal) can be printed au tomatically and manually. Transmission verification report 6 You can us e the Transm ission Verification Report as proo f that you sent a fax.
Printing reports 41 6 Reports 6 The following rep orts are available: 1 Transmission Displays the Transmission Verification Report for your last outg oing 200 faxes and prints the last report. 2 Help List Prints a list of commonly used functions to help you program your machine.
42 7 Copy settings 7 When you want to quickly change the copy settings temporarily for the next copy , use the temporar y COPY keys. You can use different combinations. MFC-7360 7 MFC-7460DN and MFC-7860DW 7 The machine returns to its default set tings one minute after copying , unless you have set the Mode Timer to 30 se conds or less.
Making copies 43 7 e Do one of the following: Press a or b to choose the enlargement or reduction ra tio you want. Press OK . Press a or b to choose Custom(25- 400%) . Press OK . Use the dial pad to enter an enlargement or reduction ra tio from 25% to 400% .
Chapter 7 44 Using the Options key 7 Make sure you a re in Copy mode. Use the Options key to quickly set the following copy settings temporar ily for the next copy.
Making copies 45 7 Improving copy quality 7 You can ch oose from a r ange of qua lity settings. The default setting is Auto . Auto Auto is the recommended mode for ordinary printouts. Su itable for docu ments that contain both text and photo graphs.
Chapter 7 46 To change the default setting follow the steps below: a Press Menu , 3 , 3 . Copy 3.Contrast b Press d or c to increase or de crease the contrast. Press OK . c Press Stop/Exit . Brightness 7 Adjust the copy brightness to make copie s darker or light er.
Making copies 47 7 g After the machine scans the page , press 1 to scan the next page. Next Page? 1.Yes 2.No h Place the next page on the sca nner glass. Press OK . Repeat steps g and h for each page of the layout. i After all the pages have been scann ed, press 2 in step g to finish.
Chapter 7 48 2 in 1 ID Copy 7 You can copy both sides of yo ur identification card onto one page, ke eping the original ca rd size. Note You can copy an identif ication card to the extent permitted under applicable laws. See Legal limitations for co pying in the Safety and Legal booklet .
Making copies 49 7 Duplex Copying (1-sided to 2-sided) (MFC-7460DN and MFC-7860DW) 7 If you want to use the duplex copy feature, load your document in the ADF . Duplex Copy (long edge flip) 7 1s i d e d i 2s i d e dL Portrai t Landscape a Make sure you are in Copy m ode .
50 A Cleaning the machine A Clean the outside and inside of the machine regularly with a dry, lint- free cloth. When you replace the toner cartridge or the dr um unit, make sure that you clean the inside of the machine.
Routine maintenance 51 A c Wipe the outside of the machine with a dry, lint-free soft cloth to remove dust. d Remove any paper that is in the paper tray. e Wipe the inside and the outside of the paper tray with a dry, lint- free soft cloth to remove dust.
52 c In the ADF unit, clean the white bar (1 ) and the glass strip (2) underneath it with a soft lint-free cloth moistened with water. Note In addition to cleaning the sca nner glass and glass strip with a soft lint-free cloth moistened with water, run you r finger tip over the glass to see if you can feel anything on it.
Routine maintenance 53 A b Slowly take out the drum unit a nd toner cartridge assembly. CAUTION We recommend that you place the dr um unit and toner cartridge assemb ly on a clean, flat surfac e with a sheet of disposable paper or cloth underne ath it in case you accidentally spill or scatter toner.
54 Cleaning the drum unit A If you have print quality problems, the drum may have foreign material, such as glue from a label stuck on the drum surface. Follow the steps below to solve the proble m. a Prepare blank A4 or Lette r size paper. b Make sure the machine is in Ready mode.
Routine maintenance 55 A • DO NOT put more than one sheet of paper in the manual feed slot at any one time, a s it may cau se a jam. • If the paper in the manu al feed slot is other than A4 or Letter size, the machine will stop the Drum Cleaning proces s and eject the paper.
56 b Slowly take out the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly. CAUTION We recommend that y ou put the drum unit and toner cartridg e assembly on a clean, flat surface with a sh eet of disposable paper or cloth undern eath it in case you accidentally spill or scatter toner.
Routine maintenance 57 A • To prevent damage to the machin e from static electricity, DO NOT touch the electrodes shown in the illustration. d Put the print sample in front of the dr um unit, and find the exact position of the poor print. e Turn the drum unit ge ar by hand while looking at the surface of the OPC drum (1).
58 g Put the toner cartridge back into the drum unit until you hear it lock into place. If you put the cartridge in properly, the green lock lever will lift automatically. h Put the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly back in the machine. i Close the front cover.
Routine maintenance 59 A b Pull the paper tray completely ou t of the machine. c Tightly wring out a lint-fre e cloth soaked in lukewarm water, and then wipe the separator pad (1) of th e paper tray with it to remove dust. d Wipe the two pick-up rollers (1) inside of the machine to remove dust.
