Chapter 1 6 Control panel overview 1 1S t a t u s L E D The LED will flash and change colour depending on the ma chine status. 2L C D Displays messages to help you set up and use your machine. 3 Menu keys: Menu Lets you access the Menu to program your settings in t his machine.
General information 7 1 Tray Select Lets you change which tray will be used for the next copy. Sort Sorts multiple copies using th e ADF. Ni n1 You can choose N in 1 to copy 2 or 4 pages onto one page. 8 S c a n Puts the machine in Sca n mode. (For details about scanning, see the Software User’s Guid e on the CD-ROM.
Chapter 1 8 Status LED indications 1 The Status LED (light emitting diode) will flash and chan ge colour depending on th e machine’s status. LED Machine Status Description Sleep Mode The power switch is off or the mach ine is in Sleep mode. Green (blinking) Warming Up The machine is warming up for printing.
General information 9 1 Note When the power switch is off or the machine is in Sleep mode, the LED is off. Red Cover open The front cover or fuser cover is open. Close the cover. Toner Life End Replace the toner cartridge with a ne w one. Paper error Put paper in the tray or clear the paper jam.
10 2 Loading paper and print media 2 The machine can feed paper fro m the standard paper tray, op tional lower tray or multi-purpose tray. When you put paper into the pap er tray, note the following: If your application so ftware supports paper size selection on the print menu, you can select it through the software.
Loading paper and do cuments 11 2 c Fan the stack of paper well to avoid paper jams and misfeeds. d Put paper in the tray, and make sure th at the paper is below the maximu m paper mark (1). The side to be printed on must be face down. IMPORTANT Make sure the paper guides to uch the sides of the pa per.
Chapter 2 12 b Open the MP tray and lower it gently. c Pull out the MP tray support (1) and unfold the flap (2). d While pressing the pape r side guide release lever, slide the pa per guides to fit the width of the paper that you are going to use. IMPORTANT Make sure the paper guides touch the sides of the pa per.
Loading paper and do cuments 13 2 Unprintable area 2 Unprintable area for copies 2 The figures belo w show unprintab le areas. Note This unprintable area shown above is for a single copy or a 1 in 1 copy using A4 size paper. The unprintable area changes with the paper size.
Chapter 2 14 Acceptable paper and other print media 2 Print quality may vary according to the type of paper you are using . You can use the following types of print media: thin paper, p lain paper, thick paper, bond paper, recycled paper , transparencies, labels or envelopes.

Chapter 2 16 Recommended paper specifications 2 The following paper specifications are suitable for this machine. Handling and using special paper 2 The machine is designed to wo rk well with most types of xerographic and bond paper. However, some paper variables may have an effect on print quality or handling reliability.

Chapter 2 18 Types of envelopes to avoid 2 IMPORTANT DO NOT use envelopes: • that are damaged , curled, wrinkled or an unusual shape • that are extremely shiny or textured • with clasps, staples.
Loading paper and do cuments 19 2 Labels 2 The machine will print on most types of labels designed for us e with a laser mach ine. Labels should have an adhesive that is acrylic-b ased since this m aterial is more stable at th e high temperat ures in the fuser unit.
Chapter 2 20 Loading documents 2 Using the automatic document feeder (ADF) 2 The ADF can hold up to 50 pages and feeds each sheet individually. Use standard 80 g/m 2 paper and always fan the pag es before putting them in the ADF. Recommended environment 2 IMPORTANT • DO NOT leave thick documents on the scanner glass.
Loading paper and do cuments 21 2 Using the scanner glass 2 You can use the scanner glass to copy or scan pages of a book or one page at a time. Documents can be u p to 215.9 mm wide and 355.6 mm long. Note To use the scanner glass, the ADF must be empty.
22 3 Paper settings 3 Paper Type 3 Set up the machine for the type of paper you are using. This will give you the best print quality. a Do one of the following: To set the paper type for the MP Tray press Menu , 1 , 1 , 1 , 1 . To set the paper type for Tray#1 press Menu , 1 , 1 , 1 , 2 .
General Setup 23 3 Tray Use in copy mode 3 You can change the priority tr ay that the machine will use for printing copies. When you choo se Tray#1 Only , MP Only or Tray#2 Only 1 , the machine pulls the paper only from that tray. If the selected tray is out of paper, No Paper will appear on the LCD.
Chapter 3 24 Volume settings 3 Beeper volume 3 When the beeper is on, the machine will beep when you press a key or make a mistake. You can choose a range of volume levels, from High to Off . a Press Menu , 1 , 2 . b Press a or b to choose Off , Low , Med or High .
General Setup 25 3 Sleep Time 3 The Sleep Time setting can reduc e power consumption by turning o ff the fuser while the machine is idle. You can choose how long the machine mu st be idle before it goes into sleep mode. When the machine receives compute r data, or makes a copy, the timer will be reset.
Chapter 3 26 User Setting List 3 You can print a list of the settings you programmed. a Press Menu , 6 , 4 . b Press Start . c Press Stop/Exit . Network Configuration List 3 The Network Configuration List is a re port listing the current network configuration including the network pr int server settings.
27 4 4 Secure Function Lock 2.0 4 Secure Function Lock lets you restrict Public access to the following machine functions: PC Prin t USB Direct Print Copy Scan This feature also prevents users from changing the Default settings of the machin e by limiting access to the Menu settings.
Chapter 4 28 Setting up the public user mode 4 Public user mode restricts the functions that are available for Pu blic users. Public users do not need to enter a pa ssword to access the features made availab le through this setting. You can set up one Public user.

Making copies 33 5 Copy options (temporary settings) 5 When you want to q uickly change the cop y settings temporarily for the next copy , use the temporary Copy keys. You can use different combinations. The machine returns to its default set tings one minute afte r copying.
Chapter 5 34 Improving copy quality 5 You can ch oose from a r ange of q uality settings. The default setting is Auto . Auto Auto is the recommended mode for ordinary printo uts. Suitable for docu ments that contain both text and photographs. Text Suitable for docu ments containing on ly text.
Making copies 35 5 Adjusting Contrast and Brightness 5 Contrast 5 Adjust the contrast to help an image look sharper and more vivid. To temporarily cha nge the contrast se tting, follow the steps below: a Load your documen t. b Use the dial pad to enter the num ber of copies (up to 99).
Chapter 5 36 Billings and ID Copies 5 When you want to copy Billings paper or Identification card, you can make it more visible by using this fe ature. This feature can copy one page at a time. After the copying is finished, the copy settings will return to the settings that you se t just before that.
Making copies 37 5 h After all the pages have been scann ed, press 2 in step f to finish. If you are copying from the ADF: 5 Insert your document face up in the direction shown below: 2 in 1 ( P) .

42 6 With the Direct Print feature, you do not need a computer to print data. You can pri nt by just plugging your USB Flash memory drive into the machine ’s USB direct inte rface. You can also connect and print directly from a camera set to USB mass storage mode.

52 A Choosing a location A Put your machine on a flat, stable surfa ce that is free of vibration and shocks, such as a desk. Put the machine near a standard ground ed electr ical socket. Choose a locatio n where the temperat ure remains b etween 10 ° C and 32.
Safety and legal 53 A To use the machine safely A Please keep these instructions for later refe rence and read th em before attempting any maintenance. WARNING There are high voltage e lectrodes inside the mach ine. Before you clean the inside of the machine, make su re you have unplugg ed the power cord from the ele ctrical socket.
54 DO NOT use a vacuum cl eaner to clea n up scat tered toner. Doing this might cause the toner dust to ignite inside the vacuum cleaner, potenti ally starting a fire. Please carefully clean the toner dust wit h a dry, lin t-free soft cloth and dispose of it according to local regulations.

62 B Optional paper tray (LT-5300) B An optional lower tray can be installe d, and it can hold up to 250 sheets of 80 g/m 2 paper. When an optional tray is installed, the machine can hold up to 550 sheets of plain paper. If you want to buy a n optional lower tray unit, contact Brother Call Ce nter.

Check the settings in your application to make sure that it is set up to work with your machine. Your computer is not recognisin g the ma chine’s input buffer’s full signal.
66 Paper handling difficulties Difficulties Sugg estions The machine does not load paper. The LCD shows No Paper or a Paper Jam message. If there is no paper, load a new stack of p aper into the paper tray. If there is paper in the paper tray, make sure it is straight.

72 Curled Turn the paper over in the paper tray, and print again. (Excluding Letterhead paper) If the problem remains, switch the Anti-Curl Lever as follows: 1 Open the back co ver. 2 Lift the lever (1) and slide the leve r (2) i n the direction of the arrow.

(See Making multiple copies on page 32.) If the problem is not solved, the drum unit may have g lue from a labe l stuck on the OPC drum surface.
74 All black Clean the corona wire inside the drum unit by sliding the blue tab. Be sure to return the blue tab to the home position ( a ). (See Cleaning th e corona wire on p age 90.) The drum unit may be damaged. Put in a new drum unit. (See Replacing the drum unit on page 98.

76 Error and maintenance messages C As with any sophisticate d office product, er rors may occur and con sumable items may ne ed to be replaced. If this happens, your machine identifies the er ror or required routine maintenance and shows the appropriate message.
Troubleshooting an d routine maintenance 77 C Fuser Error Th e temperature of fuser unit does not rise at a specified temperature within specified time. Turn the power switch off, wait a few seconds, and then turn i t on again. Leave the machine for 15 minute s with the power on.
78 Rename the File There is already a file on the USB Flash memory drive with the same name as the file you are trying to save. Change the file name of the file on the USB Flash memory drive or the file you are trying to save. Replace Parts Drum The drum unit is the end of its life.
Troubleshooting an d routine maintenance 79 C Scan Unable XX (XX=Enter Code) The machine has a mechanical problem. Disconnect the machine from the power for several minutes, t hen reconnect it. Document is too long for duplex scanning. Press Stop/Exi t .
80 Document jams C If the document is jammed, follow th e steps below. IMPORTANT After removing a jammed document, check that no paper scraps are left in the machine t hat could ca use anot her jam. Document is jammed in the top of the ADF unit C a Take out any paper from the ADF that is not jammed.

Troubleshooting an d routine maintenance 83 C Paper is jammed in Paper Tray 1 or Tray 2 C If the LCD shows Jam Tray 1 or Jam Tray 2 , follow these steps: a Pull the paper tray completely ou t of the machine. For Jam Tray 1 : For Jam Tray 2 : b Use both hands to slow ly pull out the jammed paper.
84 d Slowly take out the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly. The jamme d paper may be pu lled out with the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly, or this may release the paper so you can pull it out of the paper tray opening.
Troubleshooting an d routine maintenance 85 C IMPORTANT We recommend that yo u place the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly on a clean, flat surface with a sheet of disposable paper or clo th underneath it in case you accidentally spill or scatter toner.

88 c Wipe the outside of the machine with a dry, lint-free soft cloth to remove dust. d Remove any paper that is in the pap er tray. e Wipe the inside and the outside of the paper tray with a dry, lint- free soft cloth to remove dust. f Re-load the paper and put the pape r tray firmly back in the machine.
Troubleshooting an d routine maintenance 89 C Cleaning the laser scanner window C WARNING Use neutral deterg ents. DO NOT use any flammable substances, spray or organic solvent/liquids containing alcohol/ammonia to clean the insid e or outside of the machine.
90 c Wipe the laser scanner window (1) by wiping it with a dry lint-free soft cloth. d Put the drum unit and toner cartri dge assembly back in the machine. e Close the front cover. f Plug the mach ine’s pow er cord ba ck into the electrical socket.Turn on the machine.
Troubleshooting an d routine maintenance 91 C c Clean the corona wire inside the dr um unit by gently sliding the blue ta b from right to left and left to right several times. Note Be sure to return the blue tab to th e home position ( a ) (1). If you do not, printed pages may have a vertical stripe.
92 Cleaning the drum unit C If you have print quality problems, clean the drum unit as follows. a Turn off t he machine. Un plug the po wer cord from the electrical socket. b Open the front cover and slowly take out the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly.
Troubleshooting an d routine maintenance 93 C e Turn the drum unit gear by hand while looking at the surface of the OPC drum (1). f When you have found the mark on the drum that matches the print sample, wipe the surface of the OPC drum with a dry cotton swab un til the dust or glue on the surface comes off.
94 Replacing the consumable items C You will need to replace the consumable items wh en the machine indicates that the life of the consumable is over. IMPORTANT • We recommend placing used consumable items on a sheet of pape r to prevent accidentally spilling or scattering the material inside.
Troubleshooting an d routine maintenance 95 C Replacing a toner ca rtridge C The High Yield toner cartridges can pr int approximately 8,000 pages 1 and the Standard t oner cartridg es can prin t approximately 3,000 pages 1 . Actual page count will vary depending on your average type of document (i.
96 c Push down the blue lock lever and take the used toner cartr idge out of the dr um unit. WARNING DO NOT put a toner cartridge into a fire . It could explode, resulting in inju ries. IMPORTANT • Handle the toner car tridge carefully. If toner scatters on your hands or clothes, wipe or wash it off with cold water at once.
Troubleshooting an d routine maintenance 97 C d Unpack the new toner car tridge. Gently shake from side to side several times to distribute the toner evenly insid e the cartridge. e Pull off the protecti ve cover. f Put the new toner cartridge firmly into the drum unit until you hear it lock into place.
98 Replacing the dr um unit C The machine uses a dru m unit to create print images on paper. If the LCD shows Replace Parts Drum , the drum un it is near the end of its life and it is time to buy a new one. Even if the LCD shows Replace Parts Drum , you may be able to continue printing without having to replace the drum unit for a while.
Troubleshooting an d routine maintenance 99 C IMPORTANT • We recommend that you put the dr um unit and toner cartridge assembly on a clean, flat surf ace with a sheet of d isposable paper or cloth underneath it in case you accidentally spill or scatter toner.

Checking the Page Counters C You can see the machine’s Page Counters for copies, printed pages, repo rts and lists or a summary total.
102 Reset C The following reset functions are available: 1 Network You can reset the print server back to its default factory settings such as the password an d IP address infroma tion. 2 All Settings You can reset all the machine settings back to the settings that were s et at the factory.
