Printing 3 1 Printing a document 1 When the machine receives data from your computer , it begins printing by picking up paper from the pape r tray. The paper tray can feed many types of pap er and envelopes. (See the User’s Guide for information about the Paper Tray and Recommended paper.
Printing 4 1 Duplex printing 1 The supplied printer driver supports duplex printing. Guidelines for printing on both sides of the paper 1 If the paper is thin, it may wrinkle. If paper is curled, turn over the stack, straighten it and then put it back in the paper tray or the Manual Feed Slot.
Printing 5 1 Printer operation keys 1 Job Cancel 1 To cancel the current print job , press Job Cancel . Yo u can clear the data that is left in t he printer memory by pressing Job Cancel . To cancel multiple print jobs, hol d down th is key until the LCD shows Job Cancel (ALL) .
Printing 6 1 Printer Emulation Support (MFC-7840W only) 1 Your machine will receive print commands in a printer job language or emulation. Dif ferent operating systems and applications will send the print commands in diffe rent languages.

Printing 12 1 Multiple Page 1 The Multiple Page selection can reduce the image size of a page allowing multiple pag es to be printed on one sheet of paper or enlarge the image size for printing one page on multiple shee ts of paper. Page Order 1 When N in 1 option is selecte d, the page order can be selected from the drop-down list.
Printing 13 1 Media Type 1 You can use the following types of media in your machin e. For the best print quality, select the type of media that you wish to use. Note • When using ordinary plain paper cho ose Plain Paper . When using heavier weight pap er, envelopes or rough paper choose Thick Paper or T hicker Paper .
Printing 14 1 Advanced tab 1 Change the tab settings by clicking one of t he appropriate icons: Print Quality (1) Duplex (2) Watermark (3) Page Setting (4) Device Options (5).
Printing 15 1 Print Quality 1 Resolution You can change the resolution as follows: • HQ 1200 • 600 dpi • 300 dpi Toner Save Mode You can save running costs by turning on the Toner Save Mode , which reduces the print density (print appears lighter).
Printing 16 1 Duplex Printing 1 Manual Duplex Check Manual Duplex . In this mode, the machine prints all the even nu mbered pages first. Then the printer driver stops and shows the instructions require d to re-install the paper. When you click OK the odd numbered pages are printed.
Printing 17 1 Watermark 1 You can put a lo go or text into your document as a wa termark. You can choose one of the preset Watermarks, or you can use a bitmap file that you h ave created. Check Use Watermark , and then choose the watermark you want to use.
Printing 18 1 Watermark Setting 1 You can change the watermark’s size and position on the pa ge by selecting the watermark, and clicking the Edit button. If you want to add a new watermark, click the New button, a nd then choose Text or Bitmap in the Watermark Style .
Printing 19 1 Page Setting 1 Scaling 1 You can change the print size of your document with t he Scaling feature. Check Off if you want to print the document as it a ppears on your screen. Check Fit to Paper Size if you want to enlarge or red uce the document to fit the paper size.

Printing 21 1 Secure Print Secure documents are documents that are password prot ected when they are sent to the machine. Only the people who know the password will be able to prin t them. Since the documents are secured at the machine, you must enter the passwo rd using the control panel of the machine to print them.
Printing 22 1 Density adjustment Increase or decrease the print density. Note The Density adjustment is not availab le when you set the resolution to HQ 1200 . Improve Print Output This feature allows you to improve a prin t quality problem. • Reduce Paper Curl If you choose this setting, the paper curl may be reduced.
Printing 23 1 Print Settings (3) This will print the page s that show how the internal setting s of the printer have been configured. Print Fonts (4) (MFC-7840W only) This will print the pages that show all the internal fon ts of the printer. Check Setting.
Printing 24 1 Serial No. (2) By clickin g Auto Detect , the printer driver will probe the printer and display its se rial number. 30 2 2 The scanning operations and drivers will be different de pending on your operating sy stem. The ma chine uses a TWAIN compliant driver for scanning documen ts from your applications. For Windows ® XP/ Windows Vista ® Two scanner drivers are installed.
Scanning 31 2 e Choose the scanner you are using from the Available Scanners li st. Note • For Windows ® XP/Windows Vista ® : Choose TW-Brother MFC-XXXX (TW-Brother DCP-XXXX) or TW-Brother MFC-XXXX LAN (TW-Brother DCP-XXXX LAN) .
Scanning 32 2 i Click Start . When scanning is finished, click Cancel to retu rn to the PaperPort™ 11SE window. Note After you select a document size, you can ad just the scanning area further by clicking the left mouse button and dragging it. This is required when you wan t to crop an image when scanning.
Scanning 33 2 d Press and hold down the left mouse button and drag it over the portion you want to scan . 1 Scanning area Note You can enlarge the image using the icon, and then use the icon to restore the image to its original size. e Load your document again.
Scanning 34 2 Resolution 2 You can choose a scanning resolution from the Resolution drop-down list. Higher resolutions take more memory and transfer time, but produce a finer scan ned image. The following table shows the resolutions you can choo se and t he availa ble colors .
Scanning 35 2 Brightness 2 Adjust the setting (-50 to 50) to get the be st image. The default value is 0, representing an average. You can set the Brightness level by dragg ing the slide bar to th e right or left to lighten or darken the image. You can also enter a value in the box to set the level.
Scanning 36 2 Custom If you choose Cus tom as the size, the Custom Document Size dialog box appears. Enter the Name , Width and Height for the document. You can choose ‘mm’ or ‘inch’ as the unit for Width and Heig ht. Note • You can see the actual paper size you chose on the screen.
Scanning 37 2 Scanning a document using the WIA driver (For Windows ® XP/ Windows Vista ® ) 2 WIA compliant 2 For Windows ® XP /Windows Vista ® you can choose Windows ® Image Acquisition (WIA) for scannin g images from the machine.

Scanning 41 2 Brother Scanner Utility 2 The Brother Scanner Utility is used for configuring the WIA scanner driver for resolutions greater than 1200 dpi and for changing the paper size. If you want to set Legal size as the default size, use this utility t o change the setting.

Scanning 43 2 Scanning a document using the WIA driver (For Windows Photo Gallery and Windows Fax and Scan users) 2 Scanning a document in to the PC 2 There are two ways in which you can scan a whole p age. You can either use the ADF (automatic document feeder) or the scanner glass.

Scanning 45 2 Pre-Scanning to crop a po rtion you want to scan using the scanner glass 2 The Preview button is used to preview an image for cropping any unwan ted portions from the image. When you are satisfied with the preview, click the Scan bu tton in the Scan dialog box to scan the image.
Scanning 46 2 e Press and hold down the left mouse button and drag it over the portion you want to scan . f Click the Scan button in the Scan d ialog box. The machine starts scanning the document. This time only the chosen area of the d ocument appears in your application window.

Scanning 51 2 Page Thumbnails displays a close-up of a single page. You can open a PaperPort™ 11SE item by double - clicking its icon or the thumbnail in Desktop Vie w . As long as you have the appropriate application on your PC to display it, you can also open a non- PaperPort™ SE item by double-clicking it.
Scanning 52 2 When you double-click a folder, its contents (both PaperPort ™ 11SE MAX files and non PaperPort™ 11SE files) appear on the Desktop. You can also use Windows ® Explor er to manage the folders and items shown in Desktop Vie w .

Using ControlCenter3 3 ControlCenter3 is a software utility that lets you quickly and easily access yo ur often used applications. Using ControlCenter3 eliminates the need to manually l aunch specific applications .
ControlCenter3 55 3 Modern 3 Classic 3 Note • To be able to choose another connected model f rom the Model drop-down list, you must have the MFL-Pro Suite Software installed on your PC for that mode l. • For the Modern user interfa ce, you need to install Ad obe ® Flash ® Player 8 or greater.
ControlCenter3 56 3 Switching the user interface 3 You can choose the Modern or Classic user interface for ControlCenter3. a To switch the user interface, click Config uration button and select SETUP then SKIN SELECT . b From the SKIN SELECT dialog, you can choose your preferred user in terface.
ControlCenter3 57 3 SCAN 3 There are four scan options: Scan to Image , Sc an to OCR , Scan to E-ma il and Scan to File . Image (Default: Microsoft ® Paint) Lets you scan a page directly into any graphic vie wer /editor application.

ControlCenter3 60 3 OCR (Word Processing program) 3 Scan to OCR scans a document and converts it into text. This text can be edi ted using your favorite word processing software. To configure Scan to OCR , right-click the OCR button, click ControlCenter Configuration and click the Software Button tab.
ControlCenter3 61 3 E-mail 3 Scan to E-mail lets you scan a documen t to your default E- mail application, so you can send the scanned job as an attachment. To change the default E-mail applic ation or attachment file type, right-click the E-mail button, click ControlCenter Configuration and click the Software Button tab.
ControlCenter3 62 3 File 3 The Scan to File button lets you scan an image to a folder on y our h ard disk in one of the file types shown in the file attachment list. To configure the file type, folder and file name, right-click the File button, click ControlCenter Configuration and click the Software Button tab.

ControlCenter3 71 3 PC-FAX (MFC models only) 3 The PC-FAX option lets you send and receive faxes. Y ou ca n also configure the address book and change some general machine settings. These buttons are for sending or receiving faxes usin g the Brother PC-FAX application.
ControlCenter3 72 3 Send 3 The Send button lets you scan a document a nd automatically se nd the image as a fax fro m the PC using the Brother PC-FAX software. (See PC-FAX sending on page 92.) To change the Send settings, right-click the Send button and click ControlCenter Configuration .

78 4 4 To use the machine as a network scanner, the machine must be co nfigured with a TCP/IP address. You can set or change the address sett ings from the control panel (See Control Panel Setu p in the Network User’s Guide ) or by using the BRAdmin Professional sof tware.

Network Scanning (For models with built-in netwo rk) 80 4 c Click the Network Setting tab and choose the appropriate conn ection method. Specify your machine by address Enter the IP address of the machine in IP Address , and then click Apply .
Network Scanning (For models with built-in netwo rk) 81 4 e If you want to avoid receiving unwanted documen ts, enter a 4-digit PIN number in the Pin number and Retype Pin number field. To send data to a PC pro tected by a PIN number, the LCD prompts you to enter the PIN number before the document ca n be scanned and sent to the PC.
Network Scanning (For models with built-in netwo rk) 82 4 Using the Scan key 4 Scan to E-mail 4 When you choose Scan to E-mail yo ur document will be scanned and sent directly to the PC you designated on your network. ControlCenter3 will activate the def ault E-mail application on the designated PC.

Network Scanning (For models with built-in netwo rk) 84 4 Scan to File 4 When you choose Scan to File, you can scan a black and white or color documen t and send it directly to a PC you designate on your network. The file will be saved in the folder and file format that you ha ve configured in ControlCenter3.
Network Scanning (For models with built-in netwo rk) 85 4 Scan to FTP (MFC-7440N and MFC-7840W only) 4 When you choose Scan to FTP , you can scan a black and white or colo r document directly to an FTP server on your local network or on the internet.

Enter the Host Address (for example ftp.example.com) (up to 60 characters) o r the IP address (for example 192.23.56.18 9). c Enter the Username that has been regist ered with the FTP server for the machine (up to 32 characters).

90 5 5 Remote Setup 5 The Remote Setup program lets you configure many machine settings from a Windows ® app lication. When you start this application, the settings o n your machine will be downloaded automat ically to your PC and displayed on your PC screen.
Remote Setup (MFC models only) 91 5 Export Lets you save the current configuration settings to a file. Import Lets you read the settings from a file. Note • You can use the Export and Import buttons to save Quick Dial or all your se ttings for your machine.
92 6 6 PC-FAX sending 6 The Brother PC-FAX feature lets you to use your PC to send a document from an application as a standard fax. You can even attach a cover page. All you have to do is set up the receiving parties as member s or groups in your PC-FAX Add ress Book or simply ente r the destination address or fax number into the use r interface.
