GETTING STARTED 3 INTRODUCTION English Check that you recei ved all of the follo wing parts. 1 Press the part and slide the battery compartment cover off. 2 Insert the two suppl ied batteries (AA, R6, UM-3) according to th e polarity markings (+ and –) on the inside of the battery compartment.
CONTROLS AND FUNCTIONS 4 1 ST AND BY/ON T urns on this unit or set it to the standby mode (see page 25). • In the standby mode, this unit cons umes a small amount of power in order to recei ve infr ared signals from the remote control. • When you turn on this unit, th ere w ill be a 4 to 5-second delay before this u nit can reproduc e sound.

CONTROLS AND FUNCTIONS 7 INTRODUCTION English A MUL TI CH IN Selects the component connected to the MUL TI CH INPUT jacks as the input source when using an external decoder , etc. (see page 36). B CODE SET Use to set up remote cont rol codes (see page 80).

CONNECTIONS 11 PREP ARA TION English The speaker layout belo w sho ws the standard ITU-R * speaker setting. Y ou can use it to enjoy CINEMA DSP and multi-channel audio sources. * ITU-R is the radio communication sector of the ITU (International T elecommunication Union).
12 CONNECTIONS Be sure to connect the left ch annel (L), right channel (R), “+” (red) and “–” (black) prope rly . If the connections are faulty , no sound will be heard from the spea kers, and if the polarity of the speaker co nnections is incorrec t, the sound will be unnatural and lack bass.
13 CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION English FRONT termina ls Connect one or two front spea ker syst ems (1, 2) to these terminals. If you use only one front spea ker system, connect it to the FR ONT A or B terminal. CENTER terminals Connect a center spea ker (3) to these termi nals.
14 CONNECTIONS ■ Connecting the speak er cable 1 Remove appro x imately 10 mm (0.4 in) of insulation from the end of each speaker cable and then twist the e xposed wires of the cable together to pr event short circuits. 2 Loosen the knob. 3 Insert one bare wire into the hole on the side of each term inal.
15 CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION English ■ A udio jac ks This unit has four types of audio jacks. Connection depends on the av ailability of audio jacks on your other components. A U DIO jacks For con ventional analo g audio signals transmitted via left and right analog audio cables .
16 CONNECTIONS ■ Audio signal flow for A U DIO OUT ( REC) This unit handles digital and analog signa ls independently . Thus, audio signals in put at the analog jacks are output only at th e analog A UDIO OUT (REC) jacks.
17 CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION English Connect your TV to the VIDEO MONITOR OUT jack, the S VIDEO MONITOR OUT jack or the COMPONENT VIDEO MONITOR OUT jacks of this unit. Do not connect this u nit or other components to the A C power supp ly until all connections between componen ts are co mplete.
18 CONNECTIONS Connect your D VD player , DVD recorder , VCR or STB (set-top box) using the same type of video c onnections as those made for your TV (see page 17).

20 CONNECTIONS Connect your CD player , MD player or tape deck via analog connection. Do not connect this uni t or othe r components to the A C power supply until all connections between components are complete .
21 CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION English This unit is equipped with 6 additional input jacks (FR ONT L/R, CENTER, SURR OUND L/R and SUBWOOFER) for discrete mu lti-channel input from a multi-format player , e xternal decoder , sound processor or pre-amplif ier .
22 CONNECTIONS Both FM and AM indoor ante nnas are supplied with this unit. In general, these ante nnas should pr ovide suf ficient signal strength. Connect each antenna correctly to designated terminals. • Be sure to set the tuner frequency step (Asia and General models only) according to the frequen cy spacing in your ar ea (see page 77).
23 CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION English Once all connections are co mplete, plug the power cabl e into the A C w all outlet. V OL T A GE SELECT OR (Asia and General mode ls only) The V OL T A GE SELECTOR on the rear panel of this unit must be set for your local voltage BEFORE plugging the power cable into the A C wall outlet.
24 CONNECTIONS If you are to use 4 or 6 ohm speakers, set “SP IMP .” to “6 Ω MIN” as f ollows BEFORE using this unit. 1 Make sure this unit is in the stand by mode. See page 25 for details about turning on this unit o r standby mode. 2 Press and hold STRAIGHT (EFFECT) on the front panel and then press ST AND BY/ON to turn on this unit.
25 CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION English When all connection s are complete, turn on this unit. ■ T ur ning on the power Press ST A NDBY/ON on the front panel (or PO WER on the remote cont r ol) to turn on this unit.
BASIC SETUP 26 The “B ASIC SETUP” feature is a u seful way t o se t up yo ur system quickly and with minimal ef fort. • Make sure you discon nect your headphones from this un it. • If you wish to configure this unit manua lly using mo re precise adjustments, use the detailed parameters in “SOUND MENU” (see page 70).
27 BASIC SETUP PREP ARA TION English 5 Press d to select “SUBWOOFER” and then j / i to select the desired setting. Choices: YES , NONE • Select “YES” if you ha ve a subw oofer in your system. • Select “NONE” if you do not ha ve a subw oofer in your system.
28 BASIC SETUP 9 Press j / i to select the desired se tting. Choices: YES , NO • Sele ct “YES” to complete the setup procedure if the test tone le vels from each spea ker were satisfactory . • Select “NO” to proc eed to the speaker level adjustment menu to balance the output lev el of each speaker .
PLAYBACK 29 BAS I C OPERA TION English Extreme caution shou ld be exer cised when you play bac k CDs encoded in DTS. If you play bac k a CD encoded in DTS on a DTS-incompatible CD pla yer , yo u will onl y hear some unwanted noise that may damage your speakers.
30 PLAYBACK 5 Rotate V O LUME on the fr ont panel (or press V OLUME +/– on the remote contro l) to adjust the volume to the de sired output le vel. 6 Press T ONE CONTROL on the fr ont panel repeatedly to select “TREBLE” or “B ASS” and then press B ASS/TREBLE +/– buttons to adjust the corresponding frequency response level.
USING OTHER FEATURES 31 BAS I C OPERA TION English SILENT CINEMA allows you to enjoy mu lti-channel music or movie sound, including Dolby Digital and DTS sources, through ordinary headphones.
32 USING OTHER FEATURES y “NIGHT :CINEMA” and “NIGHT :MUSIC” adjustments are stored independently . • Y ou cannot use the night listeni ng modes in the follo wing cases: – when the “DIRECT ST EREO” mode (see page 37) is selected.
33 USING OTHER FEATURES BAS I C OPERA TION English Use this feature to automa tically set this unit to the standby mode after a certai n amount of time. The sleep timer is useful when you are going to sleep while this unit is playing or recording a source.
34 USING OTHER FEATURES Y ou can adjust the output lev el of each speaker while listening to a music source. This is also possible when playing sources input at the MUL TI CH INPUT jacks. This operation will override the le vel adjustments made in “B ASIC SETUP” (see pa ge 26) and “SP LEVE L” (see page 71).
35 USING OTHER FEATURES BAS I C OPERA TION English Compression artifacts (such as the MP3 format) are created by a lossy compression scheme where the audio is resampled to lower the bitrat e and to remov e sounds that are indistinguishabl e to typical human hearing.
36 USING OTHER FEATURES Use this feature to select th e component connected to the MUL T I CH INPUT jacks (see page 21) as the input source. Press MUL TI CH INPUT on the front panel (or MUL TI CH IN on the remo te contr ol) so that “MUL TI CH INPUT” appears in the front panel display .
37 USING OTHER FEATURES BAS I C OPERA TION English The “DIRECT STEREO” mode allows sources to b ypass the decoders and DSP processo rs of this unit so that you can enjoy pure h i-fi sound from 2-chan nel PCM and analog sources. Press AMP on the remote control and then press DIRECT ST .
38 USING OTHER FEATURES The follow ing information appears in the front panel display for a fe w seconds. Signal format Signal format display . When this unit ca nnot detect a digital signal, it automa tically switches to analog input.
ENJOYING SURROUND SOUND 39 BAS I C OPERA TION English If you connected a surround back speaker , use this feature to enjoy 6.1-channel playback for multi-channel sources using the Dolby Pro Logic IIx, Dolb y Digital EX or DTS-ES decoders. 1 Press AMP on the remote contro l and then press EXTD SUR.
40 ENJOYING SURROUND SOUND Signals input from 2-channel s ources can also be played back on multi-channels. 1 Press AMP and then press ST AND ARD on the remote control repeatedly to s witch between the “SUR. ST ANDARD” and “SUR. ENHANCED” programs or press MO VIE to select the “MO VIE THEA TER” prog rams.
41 ENJOYING SURROUND SOUND BAS I C OPERA TION English V irtual CINEMA DSP allo ws you to e njoy the CINEMA DSP programs without surr ound speakers. It creates virtual speakers to repr oduce the natural sound f ield.
RECORDING 42 Recording adjustments and ot her operations are performed from the reco rding components. Re fer to the operating instructions for those components. • When this unit is set to the standby mode, you cannot r ecord between other componen ts connected to this unit.
FM/AM TUNING 43 BAS I C OPERA TION English There are 2 tuning methods: automatic a nd manual. Automatic tuning is effecti v e when station signa ls are strong and there is no interference. If the signal from th e station you want to select is weak, t une into it manually .
44 FM/AM TUNING If the signal receiv ed from the station you w ant to select is weak, tune into it manua lly . Manually tuning into an FM st ation automatically switches the tuner to monaural reception to increa se the signal quality . 1 Rotate the INPUT selector to select “TUNER” as the input source.
45 FM/AM TUNING BAS I C OPERA TION English Y ou can use the automatic pres et tuning feature to store FM stations with strong signals up to 40 (A1 to E8: 8 preset station numbers in ea ch of the 5 preset station groups) of those stations in order . Y ou can then recall an y preset station easily by sele cting the preset station number .
46 FM/AM TUNING ■ A utomatic preset tuning option s Y ou can specify the preset number from which this unit stores FM stations and/or be gins tuning tow ard lo wer frequencies. First carry out steps 1 through 3 in “ Automatic preset tuning ” on page 45.
47 FM/AM TUNING BAS I C OPERA TION English 4 Press PRESET/TUNING l / h to select a preset station number (1 to 8) while the MEMOR Y indicator is flashing. • Press h to select a higher preset station number . • Press l to select a lo wer preset station number .
48 FM/AM TUNING 2 Press PRESET/TUNING l / h on the fr ont panel (or PRESET/CH u / d on the remote control) to select the desired preset station number (1 to 8). The preset station group and number appear in the front panel display along wi th the station band and frequency .

RADIO DATA SYSTEM TUNING (U.K. AND EUROPE MODELS ONLY) 50 Radio Data System (U.K. and Eu rope models only) is a data transmission syst em used by FM stations in many countries. The Radio Data System function is carr ied out among the netw ork stations.
51 RADIO DATA SYSTEM TUNING (U.K. AND EUROPE MODELS ONLY) BAS I C OPERA TION English 4 Press PTY SEEK ST ART on the remote control to start searc hing for all the av ailable Radio Data System preset stations.
52 RADIO DATA SYSTEM TUNING (U.K. AND EUROPE MODELS ONLY) 3 Press EON on the r emote control repeatedly to select one of the 4 Radio Data Sys tem prog ram types (NEWS, AFF AIRS, INFO or SPORT). The name of the selected program type appears in the front panel display .
53 RADIO DATA SYSTEM TUNING (U.K. AND EUROPE MODELS ONLY) BAS I C OPERA TION English 2 Press FREQ/TEXT on the remote contr ol repeatedly to select the desired Radio Data System display mode. • S elect “PS” to displa y th e name of the Radio Data System program currently being recei ved.
SOUND FIELD PROGRAMS 54 What really crea tes the rich, full tones of a live instrument are the multiple reflections from the wal ls of the room. In addition to making the sound liv e, these reflec tions enable us to tell where the player is situated as we ll as the size and shape of the room in which we are sitting.
55 SOUND FIELD PROGRAMS SOUND FIELD PROGRAMS English This unit is equipped with a variety of precise digital de coders that allo w you to enjoy multi-channel playback from almost any stereo or multi-channel sound source.

60 SOUND FIELD PROGRAMS REV.TIME Re verberation time. Adjusts the amount of time taken for the dense, subsequent re verberation sound to decay by 60 dB at 1 kHz. This chan ges the apparent size of the acoustic environment over an e xtremely wide range.

72 SET MENU ■ Speaker distan ce C)SP DISTANCE Use this feature to manual ly adjust the distance of each speaker and the delay applied to the respecti ve channe l. Ideally , each speaker should be the same distance from the main listening position. Howe ve r , this is not possible in most home situati ons.
73 SET MENU AD V AN CED OPERA TION English ■ Dynamic range F) D. RANGE Use this feature to select the amount of dynamic range compression to be applied to your speakers or headphones. This setting is ef fecti v e only when this unit is decoding Dolby Digital and DTS signals.
74 SET MENU ■ Input mode B)INPUT MODE Use this feature to set this unit to reset “I NPUT MODE” back to “A UTO” (see page 32) regardless of the previous setting or to recall the last input mode (“A UT O”, “DTS”, or “AN ALOG”) used for that source whene ver you turn on this unit.

77 ADVANCED SETUP AD V AN CED OPERA TION English ■ Speaker impedance SP IMP. Use this feature to set the speak er impedance of this unit so that it matches that of your speakers. Choices: 8 Ω MIN , 6 Ω MIN • Select “8 Ω MIN” to set the speaker impedance to 8 Ω.
REMOTE CONTROL FEATURES 78 In addition to controlling this unit, the remote control can also operate other audiovisual component s made by Y AMAHA and other manufacture rs. T o control your TV or other components, you mu st set the appropriate re mote control code for each input source (see page 8 0).
79 REMOTE CONTROL FEATURES AD V AN CED OPERA TION English ■ Controlling other compone nts Once you set the appropriate remote control codes (see page 80), use the input selector b uttons and to select the component you want to control. Note that some b uttons may not correctly operate the selected com ponent.
80 REMOTE CONTROL FEATURES Y ou can control other components b y setting the appropriate remote control c odes. Y ou can set the remote control codes for each input s ource. For a complete list of av ailable remote control c odes, refer to “LIST OF REMO TE CONTR OL CODES” at the end of this manual.
RESETTING THE SYSTEM 81 AD V AN CED OPERA TION English Use this feature to reset all the para meters of this unit to the initial f actory settings. • This procedure completely resets all the parameters of this unit including the “SET MENU” parameters.
TROUBLESHOOTING 82 Refer to the table below when this un it does not function properly . If the proble m you are experiencing is not listed belo w or if the instruc tion belo w does not help, set this unit to th e standb y mode, disconnect the power cable, and contact the nearest authorized Y AMAHA dealer or service center .
83 TROUBLESHOOTING ADDITIONAL INFORMA TION English Prob lem Cause Remed y See page The sound su ddenly goes off. The protect ion circuitr y has been activated because of a short cir cuit, etc. Check that the speaker i mpedance set ting is co rrect. 24 Check that the speaker wi res are not touching each other and the n turn this uni t back on.

87 GLOSSARY ADDITIONAL INFORMA TION English ■ LFE 0.1 channel This channel reproduces lo w-frequenc y signals. The frequency range of this cha nnel is from 20 Hz to 120 Hz. This channel is counted as 0.1 because it only enforces a low-f requency range compared to the full-rang e reproduced by th e other 5/6 ch an nels in Dolby Digital or DTS 5.
