GETTING STARTE D 4 • Change all of the batteries if you notice conditions such as th e operation range of the remote control decreases, the indicato r does not flash, or its light or display windo w become dim. • Do not use old batteries together with ne w ones.
GETTING STARTED 5 INTRODUCTION English The remote control tra nsmits a directiona l infrared ray . Be sure to aim the remote control directly at the remote control sensor on the main unit during operation. • Do not spill water or other liquid s on the remote control.

16 CONNECTIONS 1 Remove appr oximately 10 mm of insulation from each of the speaker cables. 2 T wist the exposed wires of the cab le tog ether to prevent short circuits. 3 Loosen the knob usin g the supplied speaker terminal wrench. 4 Insert one bare wire into the hole on the side of each term inal.
17 CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION English PRESENCE/ZONE 2(3) terminals Connect presence speakers to t hese terminals. Y ou can also use these terminals to connect the Zone 2 speakers (see page 109 ). 1 Open the tab. 2 Insert one bare wire into the hole of eac h terminal.

19 CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION English Some of the speakers commercially available these days hav e speaker wire connections that allo w bi-wiring or bi- amplification to enhance the performance of the speaker system. This unit allo ws you to make bi-wire and bi-AMP connections to one speaker sy stem.
20 CONNECTIONS Do not connect this unit or other components to the main power until all connections between components are complete. ■ Cable indication s ■ Analog jacks Y ou can input analog signals from audio components by connecting audio pin cables to the analog jacks on this unit.
21 CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION English ■ A udio jacks This unit has four types of audio jacks (analog audio, digita l audio coaxial, digital aud i o optical and HDM I). Connection depends on the a vailability of audi o jacks on your other components. A UDIO jacks For con ventional analo g audio signals.

23 CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION English This unit has the HDMI IN 1 and HDMI IN 2 jacks for digita l audio and video signal i nput as well as the HDMI OUT jack for digital audio and video signal out put. Connect the HDMI IN 1 or HDMI IN 2 jack of this unit to the HDMI OUT jack of other HDMI components (such as a D VD player).

29 CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION English Both AM and FM indoor antennas are include d with this unit. In general, these an tenn as should provide suff icient signal strength. Connect each antenna corr ectly to the designated terminals. ■ Connecting the AM loop antenna 1 Set up the AM loop antenna .
30 CONNECTIONS ■ Connecting the A C power cable Plug the supplied A C power cable into the A C inlet after all other connections are complete and then plug the AC po wer cable to an A C wall outlet. Use the supplied A C cable. Do not use other A C power cables as doing so may result in f ire hazard or electrical shock.

AUTO SETUP 32 This receiv er employs Y AMAHA Parametric Room Acoustic Optimize r (YP A O) technology which lets you av oid troublesome listening-based speaker setup and achiev es highly accu rate sound adjustments. The supplied optimizer microphone collects and analyzes the sound your speakers produce in y our actual listening en vironment.
33 AUTO SETUP PREP ARA TION English For best results, make sure th e room is as quiet as possible during the A UTO SETUP procedure (YP A O). If there is too much ambient noise, the results ma y not be satisfactory . y • Y ou can run A UTO SETUP using the system menu that app ears in the GUI or in the fr ont panel display .
34 AUTO SETUP 5 Press k / n repeatedly to select Wiring, Distance, Size, Equal izing or Level and then press h . 6 For Wiring, Distance, Siz e or Level, select: Check T o automatically check and adjust the selected item. Skip T o skip the selected item and perfor m no adjustments.
35 AUTO SETUP PREP ARA TION English 9 Press n to select Star t and then press ENTER. Loud test tones are output from each sp eaker and “Measuring” appears during the A UTO SETUP procedure. y • T o stop the A UTO SETUP procedure, press one of the cursor buttons ( k / n / l / h ) or ENTER.
36 AUTO SETUP After all menu items ha ve been measured, “Measuremen t Over” appears on the screen and the results for each item are displayed. •P r e s s n and select Setup to set the measured values. •P r e s s k and select Retry to retry the A UTO SETUP procedure.
PLAYBACK 37 BAS I C OPERA TION English Extreme caution sh ould be exercised when you play back CD s encoded in DTS. If you play back a CD encoded in DTS on a DTS-incompatible CD player, you will only h ear some unwanted noise that may damage your speakers.
38 PLAYBACK 6 Rotate V OLUME on the front panel (or press V OLUME +/– on the remote control) to adjust the volume to the de sired output le vel. 7 Rotate the PROGRAM selector on the front panel (or press one of th e sound field program b uttons on the remote contr ol) to select the desired sound field pr ogram.
39 PLAYBACK BAS I C OPERA TION English ■ Adjusting th e tonal qua lity Use this feature to adjust the balan c e of bass and treble for the front L/R and center speaker channels. 1 Press T O NE CONTROL on the front panel repeatedly to select TREBLE or B ASS.
40 PLAYBACK ■ Selecting the MUL TI CH INPUT Press MUL TI CH INPUT on the fro nt panel or MUL TI CH IN on the remote control so that MUL TI CH INPUT appears in the fr ont panel display and on the video moni tor . When MUL TI CH INPUT is shown in the front panel display and the video monitor , no other source can be played.
41 PLAYBACK BAS I C OPERA TION English ■ Enjoy ing 2-chan nel software in sur round Signals input from 2-channel sources can also be played back in multiple channels. 1 Set AMP/SOURCE/TV to AMP and then press ST AND ARD on the remote control to switch between the Surr ound and Enhanced prog rams.
42 PLAYBACK ■ Using PURE DIRECT PURE DIRECT bypasses the decoders and DSP processors of this unit as well as shuts down the video circuitry , allowing you to en jo y the highest possible sound fidelity from analog and PCM sources. • T o avoid une xpected noise, do not play DTS-encoded CDs in the PURE DIRECT mode.
43 PLAYBACK BAS I C OPERA TION English ■ Using the sleep ti mer Use this feature to automa tically set this unit in the standby mode after a certai n amount of time. The sleep timer is useful when you are going to sleep while this unit is playing or recording a source.
44 PLAYBACK 2 Press STRAIGHT (EFFECT) on the front panel or on the remote contr ol again to turn the sound effect bac k on. STRAIGHT disappears from the front panel display . ■ Virtual CINEMA DSP V i rtual CINEMA DSP allows you to enjoy the CINEMA DSP programs without surround speak ers.
45 PLAYBACK BAS I C OPERA TION English ■ Displayin g infor mation about the inpu t sour ce Y ou can display the type, fo rmat and sampling frequency of the current input signal. 1 Set AMP/SOURCE/TV to AMP and then press GUI T OP on the remote contr o l.
RECORDING 46 Recording adjustments a nd other operations are performed from the recording components. Refer to the operation instructions for those components.
FM/AM TUNING 47 BAS I C OPERA TION English Automatic tuning is ef fective when station signals are strong and there is no in terference. 1 Rotate the INPUT select or on the front panel (or set AMP/SOURCE/TV to SOURCE and then press TUNER on th e remote control) to select TUNER as the input source.
48 FM/AM TUNING Manual tuning is effective wh en stations signal s are weak. Manually tuning into an FM stat ion will automatically change the re ception mode to monaural reception to increase the sig nal quality. 1 Repeat step s 1 and 2 in “A utomatic tuning” to select TUNER and the rece ption band.
49 FM/AM TUNING BAS I C OPERA TION English 3 Press and hold MEMORY (MAN’L/A U T O FM) on the fr ont panel for more tha n 3 seconds. The preset group and number as well as the MEMOR Y and A UTO indicators flash.
50 FM/AM TUNING Y ou can also store up to 40 FM or AM stations (8 stations in each of the 5 groups, A1 to E8) manually . Y ou must first set AMP/SOURCE/T V to SOURCE and then press TUNER on the remote control to select T UNER as the input source.
51 FM/AM TUNING BAS I C OPERA TION English 5 Press MEMOR Y (MAN’L/A UT O FM) on the front panel while the MEMOR Y indicator is flashing. The station band and frequenc y appear in the front panel display with the preset group and number you hav e selected.
