CONTROLS AND FUNCTIONS 9 En INTRODUCTION English ■ Installing batteries in the remote contr ol 1 Press the part and slide the battery compartment cover off. 2 Insert the four supplied batteries (AAA, R03, UM-4) accord ing to the polarity markings (+ and –) on the inside of the battery compartment.

CONNECTIONS 13 En PREP ARA TION English The speaker layout belo w sho ws the speaker setting we recommend. Y ou can use it to enjo y CINEMA DSP and multi-channel audio sources. Front left and right speakers (FL and FR) The front speakers are used for the main source sound plus effect sounds.
14 En CONNECTIONS Be sure to connect the left ch annel (L), right channel (R), “+” (red) and “–” (black) prope rly . If the connections are faulty , no sound will be heard from the spea kers, and if the polarity of the speaker co nnections is incorrec t, the sound will be unnatural and lack bass.
15 En CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION English FRONT termin als Connect front left and right spe akers to these te rminals. CENTER terminals Connect a center speak er to these terminals. SURROUND terminals Connect surround left and right speakers to these terminals.

17 En CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION English Some of the speakers ha v e sp eaker wire connections that allow bi-amplif ication to enha nce the performance of the speaker system. This unit allo ws you to make bi- amplification co nnection to one speak er system.
18 En CONNECTIONS ■ Aud i o j a cks This unit has three types of audio jacks. Connection depends on the a vailability of audio jacks on your other components. A UDIO jacks For con ventional analog audio si gnals transmitted via left and right analog audio cables .
19 En CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION English This unit has the HDMI IN 1, HDMI IN 2 and HDMI OUT jacks for digital audio and video signal i nput/output. Connect the HDMI IN 1 or HDMI IN 2 jack of this unit to the HDMI output jack of other HDM I components (such as a D VD player).
20 En CONNECTIONS ■ Audio signal flow • 2 -channel as well as multi-channel PCM, D olby Digital and DTS signals input at the HDMI IN 1 or HDMI IN 2 jack can be output at the HDMI OUT jack only when “SUPPOR T A UDIO” is set to “OTHER” (see page 86).
21 En CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION English Connect your TV (or projector) to the HDMI OUT ja ck, the COMPONENT VIDEO MONIT OR OUT jacks, the S VIDEO MONITOR OUT jack or the VIDE O MONITOR OUT jack of this unit. Do not connect this u nit or other components to the A C power suppl y until al l connections between componen ts are com plete.
22 En CONNECTIONS Do not connect this unit or othe r components to the A C power supply until all connections between components are complete . • When “V CONV .” is set to “OFF” (see page 90), be sure to make th e same type of video connections as those made for yo ur TV (see page 21).
23 En CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION English ■ Connecting a D VD recorder , PVR or VCR *1 When you connect another VCR to this un it, connect it to the VCR 1 terminals (S VIDEO IN, VID EO IN, A UDIO IN, S VIDEO OUT, VIDEO OUT and A UDIO OUT jacks) same as DVR/V CR 2 terminals except the DIGIT AL INPUT (COAXIAL) jack.
24 En CONNECTIONS ■ Connecting audio component s • T o make a digital connection to a component other than the defau lt component assigned to either the DI GIT AL INPUT jack or the DIGIT AL OUTPUT jack, selec t the corresp onding setting for “O PTICAL OUT”, “OPTICAL IN”, or “COAXIAL IN” in “I/O ASSIGNMENT” (see page 87).
25 En CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION English ■ Connecting an externa l amplifier This unit has more than e nough power for an y home use. Howe ver , if you want to add more po wer to the speaker output or if you want to use another amplifier , connect an externa l amplifi er to the PRE OUT jacks.
26 En CONNECTIONS This unit is equipped with 6 additio nal input jacks (left and right FR ONT , CENTER, left and right SURROUND and SUBWOOFER) for discrete mu lti-channel input from a multi -format player , e xternal de coder , sound processor or pre-amplifier .
27 En CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION English This unit is equipped with the DOCK te rminal on the rear panel that allows y ou to connect a Y AMAHA iPod uni versal dock (such as the YDS-10, sold separately) where you can station your iPod and control playback of your iPod using the supplied remote control.
28 En CONNECTIONS Both FM and AM indoor ante nnas are supplied with this unit. Connect each antenna correctly to the designated terminals. In general, these antennas should provide suff icient signal strength.
29 En CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION English ■ Connecting the A C power cable Use the supplied AC cable. Do not use other AC po wer cables as doing so may result in fire or electrical shock. Plug the supplied A C po wer cable into the A C inlet after a ll other connections are complete, then plug the AC po wer cable into an A C wall outlet.
30 En CONNECTIONS If you are to use 6 ohm speaker s, set “SPEAKER IMP .” to “6 Ω MIN” as follo ws BEFORE using this unit. 4 ohm speakers can be also used as the front speakers. 1 Make sure this unit is turned off . See page 31 for details about turning on or of f this unit.
31 En CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION English When all connec tions are complete, turn on th is unit. ■ T urning on th is unit Press MASTER ON/OFF on the fr ont panel inward to the ON position to turn on this unit. When you turns on this unit by pressing MASTER ON/ OFF, the main zone is turned on.
AUTO SETUP 32 En This unit employs the YP A O (Y AMAHA Parametric Room Acoustic Optimize r) technology which lets you a v oid troublesome listening- based speak er setup and achie ves h ighly accurate sound adjust ments automatically .
33 En AUTO SETUP PREP ARA TION English 3 Make sure of the follo wing chec k points before starting the A UTO SETUP operations. • Speakers are connected appropriately . • Supplied optimizer microphone is connected to this unit and placed appropriately .
34 En AUTO SETUP V olume level LEV EL Checks and adjusts the vo lume le ve l of each sp eaker . Choices: CHECK , SKIP • Select “CHECK” t o automatica lly check and adju st this item. • Select “SKIP” to skip this item and perform no adjustments.
35 En AUTO SETUP PREP ARA TION English 9 Press ENTER to disp la y the setup result s in detail. 10 Press l / h repeatedly to toggle between the setup result disp lays. y If you are not satisfied with th e results or want to manually adjust each parameter, run “MANUAL SETUP” (see page 77).
36 En AUTO SETUP 11 Press ENTER to return to the top “RESUL T:EXIT” displa y . 12 Make sure the pointer is poin ting at “SET” and “CANCEL” and then press l / h to select “SET” or “CANCEL”. Choices: SET , CANCEL • Select “SE T” to confirm the “A UTO SETUP” results.
37 En AUTO SETUP PREP ARA TION English ■ If “W ARN ING” appears When this unit detects pot ential problems during the “A UTO SETUP” procedure, “W ARNING” appears in the “RESUL T:EXIT” display . Chec k the warning messages to correct your speaker settings.
PLAYBACK 38 En Extreme caution should be exer cised when y ou play bac k CDs encoded in DTS. If y ou pla y bac k a CD encoded in DTS on a DTS-in compatible CD player , you will onl y hear some unwanted noise that ma y damage your speakers. Check whether your CD pla y er supports CDs encoded in DTS.
39 En PLAYBACK BAS I C OPERA TION English 3 Star t playback on the selected source component or select a broadcast station. • Refer to the operating inst ructions for the source component.
40 En PLAYBACK This unit comes with a v ariety of input jack s. Use this feature (Audio input jack select) to switch the input jac k assigned to an input source when more than o ne jacks are assigned to an input source. y • W e recommend setting Audio input jack select to “AUT O” in most cases.
41 En PLAYBACK BAS I C OPERA TION English Use this feature to select th e component connected to the MUL TI CH INPUT jacks (see page 26) as the input source. Rotate the input selector on the front panel to select MUL T I CH INPUT (or MUL TI CH IN on the remote control).
42 En PLAYBACK Y ou can display the format, samp ling frequenc y , channel, bit rate and flag data of the current input signal. 1 Set the operation mode selector to AMP and then press SET MENU on the remote contr ol. The top “SET MENU” displa y appears in t he OSD.
43 En PLAYBACK BAS I C OPERA TION English Y ou can combine a video image from a video source with sound from an audio source. For example, you can enjo y listening to classical music whi le vie wing beautiful scenery from the video s ource on the video monitor .
SOUND FIELD PROGRAMS 44 En This unit is equipped with a variety of precise d igital de coders that allow you to enjo y multi-channel playback from almost any stereo or multi-ch annel sound source.
45 En SOUND FIELD PROGRAMS BAS I C OPERA TION English y Select a sound field progr am based on your listening pref erence, not merely on the name of the program, etc.

48 En SOUND FIELD PROGRAMS ■ Stereo pla ybac k MOVIE Spectacle This progra m creates the extremely wide s ound field of a 70- mm movie theater. It precisely repr oduces the source soun d in detai l, making both the vide o and the sound field incred ibly real.
49 En SOUND FIELD PROGRAMS BAS I C OPERA TION English ■ Using sound field pr ograms without surr ound speaker s (Virtual CINEMA DSP) V irtual CINEMA DSP allo ws you to e njoy the CINEMA DSP programs without surr ound speakers. It creates virtual speakers to repr oduce the natural sound f ield.
USING AUDIO FEATURES 50 En Use the Pure Direct mode to enjo y the pure f idelity sound of the selected source. When the Pure Direct mode i s acti vated, this unit play s back the selected s ource with t he least circuitry . Press PURE DIRECT on th e front panel (or on the remote control) to turn on or off the Pure Direct mode.
51 En USING AUDIO FEATURES BAS I C OPERA TION English Y ou can adjust the output lev el of each speaker while listening to a music source. This is also possible when playing sources input at the MUL TI CH INPUT jacks. This operation will override the level adjustments made in “A UT O SETUP” (see page 32) and “SP LEVEL” (see page 83).
52 En USING AUDIO FEATURES Compression artif acts (such as the MP3 format) are created by a lossy compressi on scheme where the audio is resampled to lower the bit rate and to remov e sounds that are indistinguishable to t ypical human hearing.
53 En USING AUDIO FEATURES BAS I C OPERA TION English The night listening modes are designed to improv e listenability at lo wer volumes or at night. Choose either “NIGHT :CINEMA” or “NIGHT:MUSIC” dep ending on the type of material you are playing.
FM/AM TUNING 54 En There are 2 tuning methods: automatic a nd manual. Automatic tuning is ef fecti ve when st ation signals are strong and there is no interference.
55 En FM/AM TUNING BAS I C OPERA TION English ■ Remote contr ol functions Zone 2/Zone 3 remote con trol is supp lied with U .S.A., Canada, Australia, U.K ., China, Asia and General models only . 1 TUNER Selects “TUNER” as the input source . This unit is turned into the last select ed station.
56 En FM/AM TUNING Automatic tuning is ef fectiv e when station signals are strong and there is no interference. 1 Rotate the INPUT selector to select “TUNER” as the input source. 2 Press FM/AM to select the reception band. “FM” or “AM” appears in the front panel display .
57 En FM/AM TUNING BAS I C OPERA TION English If the signal recei ved from the station you w ant to select is weak, tune into it manually . Manually tuning into an FM st ation automa tically switches the tuner to monaural reception to increase the signal quality .
58 En FM/AM TUNING Y ou can use the automa tic preset tuning feature to store up to 40 FM stations with strong signals (A1 to E8: 8 preset station numbers in each of the 5 preset station groups) in order . Y ou can then recall an y preset station easily by selecting the preset station numbe r .
59 En FM/AM TUNING BAS I C OPERA TION English Y ou can also store up to 40 stations (A1 to E8: 8 preset station numbers in each of the 5 preset station groups) manually . 1 T une into a station auto ma tically or manually . See pages 56 and 57 for tuning instructions.
60 En FM/AM TUNING Y ou can tune into an y desired station simply by selecting the preset station group and number under which it was stored. y When performing this oper ation w ith the remote control, set the operation mode selector to S OURCE and then press TUNER to select “TUNER” as the input source.

RADIO DATA SYSTEM TUNING (U.K. AND EUROPE MODELS ONLY) 62 En Radio Data System is a data transmissi on system used b y FM stat ions in man y countries.
63 En RADIO DATA SYSTEM TUNING (U.K. AND EUROPE MODELS ONLY) BAS I C OPERA TION English Use this feature to sele ct the desired radio program by program type from the all pr eset Radio Data S ystem broadcasting stations. y Use the automatic preset tuning feature to preset Radio D ata System broadcasting stations (see page 58).
64 En RADIO DATA SYSTEM TUNING (U.K. AND EUROPE MODELS ONLY) 5 Press PTY SEEK ST ART on the remote control to start searching f or all the av ailable Radio Data System pr eset stations. The name of th e selecte d program type flashes and the PTY HOLD indicator lights up in the front panel display while this unit is searching for stations.
65 En RADIO DATA SYSTEM TUNING (U.K. AND EUROPE MODELS ONLY) BAS I C OPERA TION English 3 Press EON on the remote control repeatedly to select one of the 4 Radio Data System prog ram types (NEWS, AFF AIRS, INFO or SPORT). The name of the selected program type appears in the front panel display .
USING IPOD 66 En Once you hav e stationed your iPod in a Y AMAHA iPod uni versal dock (such as the YDS-10, sold separately) connected to the DOCK terminal of this unit (see page 27), you can enj oy playback of your iPod using the supplied remote control.
67 En USING iPod BAS I C OPERA TION English 1 Set the operation mode selector to SOURCE and then press DISPLA Y on the remote contro l. The follo wing display appea rs in the OSD. 2 Press k / n / l / h on the remote contr ol to navigate the iP od menu and then press ENTER to begin pla ybac k of the selected song.
RECORDING 68 En Recording adjustments and ot her operations are performed from the reco rding components. Re fer to the operating instructions for those components. The DTS signal is a digital bitstream. Attemptin g to digitall y recor d the DTS bitstream will result in noise being recorded.
ADVANCED SOUND CONFIGURATIONS 69 En AD V ANCED OPERA TION English Y ou can enjo y good quality sound with the initial factory settings. Although you do not hav e to change the initial factory settings, you can change some of the parameters to better suit the input source or your listening room.
70 En ADVANCED SOUND CONFIGURATIONS ■ Sound field parame ter descriptions Y ou can adjust the v alues of certain digi tal soun d field parameters so that the so und fields are recreated accurately in your listening room. Not all of the follo wing parameters are found in e v ery program.
71 En ADVANCED SOUND CONFIGURATIONS AD V ANCED OPERA TION English ROOM SIZE P.ROOM SIZE S.ROOM SIZE SB ROOM SIZE Room size. Presence, su rround, and su rround back room size. Adjusts the appar ent size of the surround sound f ield. The lar ger the v alue, the larger the su rround sound f ield becomes.
72 En ADVANCED SOUND CONFIGURATIONS REV.TIME Re verberation time. Adjusts the amount of time taken for the dense, subsequent re verberation sound to decay by 60 dB at 1 kHz. This chan ges the apparent size of the acoustic environment over an e xtremely wide range.
73 En ADVANCED SOUND CONFIGURATIONS AD V ANCED OPERA TION English ■ Selecting decoder s f or 2-c hannel sourc es (surr ound decode mode) Use this feature to play back sources with selected decoders. Y ou can play back 2-channel sources on multi- channels.
74 En ADVANCED SOUND CONFIGURATIONS ■ Decoder descriptio ns y When you select the surround decode mo de for Dolby Digital, DT S or DTS 96/24 sources, this unit automatically selects “SURROUND DECODE Dolby Digital”, “SURROUND DECODE DTS” or “SURR OUND DECODE DTS 96/24” program.

CUSTOMIZING THIS UNIT (MANUAL SETUP) 77 En AD V ANCED OPERA TION English Y ou can use the follo wing parameters in “SET MENU” to adjust a v ariety of system settings and customiz e the way this unit operates. Change the initial settings (indicated in bold under each parameter) to reflect the needs of your listenin g en vironment.
78 En CUSTOMIZING THIS UNIT (MANUAL SETUP) Input menu 3 INPUT MENU Use this menu to manually re assign the input/output jacks, select the input mode or rename the input source. Option menu 4 OPTION MENU Use this menu to manually adjus t the optional system parameters.
79 En CUSTOMIZING THIS UNIT (MANUAL SETUP) AD V ANCED OPERA TION English Use the remote control to acce ss and adjust each parameter . y • Y ou can cha nge the “SET MENU” pa rameters while this unit is reproducing sound. • If you press P ARAMETER during the “SET MENU” operation, the “SET MENU” opera tion is canceled.

82 En CUSTOMIZING THIS UNIT (MANUAL SETUP) Surround bac k speakers SB L/R SP Choices: NONE, SMLx1, SMLx2 , LRGx1, LRGx2 • Select “NONE” (none) if you did not connect surround back speakers. The surround back channel signals are directed to the surround left and right speakers.
