1-7 E EMU00015 B ASIC BO A TING RULES (Rules of the r oad) Just as there are rules which apply when you are driving on streets and high ways , there are waterwa y r ules whi ch apply when you are driving your boat. These r ules are used inter nationally , and are also enforced by the United States Coast Guard and local agencies.
1-8 E RULES WHEN ENCOUNTERING VESSELS There are three main situations which you ma y encounter with other vessels which could lead to a col lision unless the Steer ing Rules are f ollowed: Meeting (yo.

2-8 E EMU01323 P ower Tilt Switch The power tilt adjusts the motor angl e in relation to the transom. The power tilt s witch is locate d on the tiller han dle. Pushing the s witch “ UP ” tilts the mo tor up. Pressing the s witch “ DN ” tilts the motor down.

2-13 E EMU01295 STEERING FRICTION ADJUSTING LEVER A friction device provides resistance to steering movement. This is adjustable according to operator pref erence. W ARNING @ Do not o ver tighten the friction adjusting lever . If there is too muc h resistance, it ma y be difficult to s teer , which could result in an accident.

3-1 E EMU00175 INST ALLA TION CA U TION: @ Incorrec t engine heig ht or obstructions to smooth water flow (suc h as the design or condition of the boat or accessories such as transom ladder s/depth finder transducers) can create air borne water spray while the boat is cruising.

Do not install an out- board motor with more hor sepower than the maximum rating on the capac- ity plate of the boat. If the boat does not have a capacity plate, consult the boat manufacturer .
3-3 E EMU01298 Mounting Height T o r un your boat at optimum efficiency , the water-resistance (dr ag) of the boat and out- board motor must be made as little as possi- ble . The mounting-hei ght of the o utboard motor greatly affects the water-resistance.
3-4 E EMU01318 ¯ CLAMPING THE OUTB O ARD MO TOR 1) Place the outboard on the transom so that it is positioned as close to the cen- ter as possible. Tighten the transom clamp screws e venly and securely . Check the clamp-scre ws fo r tightness occasionally dur ing operation of the motor as they can w ork loose due to engine vibration.
3-5 E EMU00224 BREAKING IN (R UNNING IN) ENGINE Y our new engine requires a perio d of break- in (runni ng-in) to allow mating surfaces of moving part s to wear-in e venly . Correct break-in (ru nning-in) will help ensure prop er perf or mance and longer engi ne life .
3-6 E EMU00204 PRE-OPERA TION CHECKS W ARNING @ If an y item in the p re-operatio n chec k is not working properly , have it inspected and repair ed before operating the out- boar d motor . Otherwise, an accident could oc cur . @ CA U TION: @ Do not start the engine out of water .
3-7 E EMU00209 Contr ols ● Check throttle , shift, and steer ing fo r proper operation before star ting the engine. ● The controls should work smoo thly , with- out binding or unusual free play . ● Look for loose or damaged connections. ● Check operation of the star ter and stop s witches when the outboard motor is in the water .
3-8 E EMU00202 FILLING FUEL 1) Remo v e the fuel tank cap . 2) Fill the fuel tank carefully . 3) Close the cap securely after refueling. Wipe up any spilled fuel.

3-13 E EMU01000 PROCEDURE FOR REMO TE CONTR OL MODEl 4) Place the remote control le ver in the Neutral position. When the engine is warm, open the throttl e slightly using the neutral throttle le ver or the free acceler- ator . After the engin e star ts, retur n the throttle to the fully closed position.
3-14 E EMU00945 Electric Start Model 7) Open the throttle slightly lifting the ne u- tral throttle le v er upwards par tially . Y ou ma y need to cha nge the throttle ope ning slightly depending on engi ne tempera- ture. After the engine star ts, return the throt- tle to the original position.
3-15 E EMU01368 ¯ W ARMING UP ENGINE 1) After the engine star ts, return the choke knob to the half-wa y position. F or appro ximately the first 5 minutes after star ting, war m up the engine by operat- ing at one fifth throttle or less . After the engine has war med up , completely push in the choke knob .

Otherwise, the boat ma y become unsta- ble, which cou ld result in loss of contr ol and an accident. @ 1) Place the throttle control gri p in the fully closed position (for Tiller control model).
3-18 E EMU00273 ST OPPING ENGINE Let it cool off f or a f ew min utes at idle or low speed first. Stopping th e engine immedia tely after operating at high speed is not recom- mended. EMU00277 ¯ 1) Push and hold the engine stop button or turn the main switch to “ OFF ” .
3-19 E EMU01412 TRIMMING OUTBO ARD MO T OR The trim angle of the outboard motor hel ps deter mine the position o f the bow of the boat in the water . The correct tr im angle will help improv e performance and fuel economy while reducing strain on the eng ine.
3-20 E ADJUSTING TRIM ANGLE EMU00951 Manual tilt model There are 4 or 5 holes provided in the clamp brack et to adju st the outboard motor tr im angle. 1) Stop the engine. 2) Remov e the tr im angle adju sting rod 1 from the clamp brack et whi le tilting the motor up slightly .
3-21 E EMU01414 P ower Tilt Model W ARNING @ ● Be sure all people are clear of the out- board motor when adjusting the tilt angle, also be careful not to pinch any body parts between the drive uni t and clamp brac ket. ● Use caution when trying a trim posi- tion f or the first time.
3-22 E 2) Tilt the engine to the desired angle using the power tilt s witch. NO T E: @ Sta y within the tri m operating angle when trimmi ng the outboard motor using the pow er tilt system. @ T o raise the b ow ( “ trim-out ” ), tilt the engine up .
3-23 E EMU00282 Bow U p When the boat is on p lane, a bow-up atti- tude result in less drag, greater stability and efficiency . This is g enerally when the keel line of the boat is u p about 3 to 5 de grees. When trimmed o ut, the boat may ha ve more tendency to ste er to one side or the oth er .
3-24 E EMU00285 TIL TING UP/DO WN If the engine will be stopped for some time, or if the boat is moored in shallows, the engine sh ould be tilted up to protect th e pro- peller and casing from damage by collision with obstr uctions, and also to reduce salt corrosion.
3-25 E EMU00290 PR OCEDURE FOR TIL TING UP Manual tilt model 1) Place the gear shift le v er in Neutr a l. 2) Remov e the fuel line connecti on from the motor . 3) Place the tilt lock le ver in the release position. 4) Hold the rear of the top cowling with one hand and fully tilt the engine up.

3-27 E 3) Push the tilt suppor t knob into the clamp brac ket to suppor t the engine. W ARNING @ After tilting t he engine, be sure to sup- port it with the tilt support knob. Other- wise , the engine could fa ll back down suddenly if oil in the power tilt unit should lose p ressure .

4-8 E EMU00349 Lubrication 1) Remo ve the spark plug(s). Spra y a Y amaha “ Stor -Rite Engine F ogging Oil ” into each cylinder for 10 seconds . Grease the spark plug threads and rei n- stall the spark plug(s) and torque to proper specification. (Refer to the “ CLEANING AND ADJUSTING SP ARK PLUG ” ).
4-9 E EMU00353 Battery Care W ARNING @ Battery electrol yte is poisonous and dan- gerous, causing severe b urns, etc. It con- tains sulfuric acid. A void co ntact with skin, ey es, or c loth- ing. Antidote: EXTERNAL; Flush with water . INTERNAL; Drink large quantities of water or milk.

4-13 E EMU01202 CLEANING AND ADJUSTING SP ARK PLUG W ARNING @ When removing or installing a spark plug, be care ful not to damag e the insu- lator . A damaged insulator could all ow exte rnal sparks, w hich co uld lead to explosio n or fire. @ The spark plu g is an impor tant engine com- ponent and is e asy to inspect.
4-14 E When fitting th e plug, always clean the gas- ket surf ace an d use a new gask et. Wipe off any dir t from the thread s and screw in the spark plug to the correct torque. NO T E: @ If a torque-wrench is not availab le when you are fitting a spar k plug, a goo d estimate of the correct torque is 1/4 to 1/2 a tur n past finger-tight.
