General information 3 EMU25290 Two Stars — Very Low Emission The two-star label identifies engines that meet the Air Resources Board ’ s 2004 exhaust emission standards . Engines meeting these standards have 20% lower emiss ions than One Star-Low-Emission engine s.

General informati on 6 Stand-on vessel The vessel with the right-of-way has the duty to continue its course and speed, except to avoid an immedi ate collision. When you main - tain your direction and speed, the other vessel will be able to determine how best to avoid you.
General information 7 Crossing When two power driven vessels are crossing each other ’ s path c lose enough to run the risk of collision, the v essel which has the other on the starboard (right) side must keep out of the way of the other. If the other vessel is on you r right, you must keep out of its way; you are the Give-Way vess el.

Basic components 14 T8 EMU25802 Fuel tank If your model was equipped with a portable fuel tank, its function is as follows. W ARNING EWM00020 The fuel tank supplied with this engine is its dedicated fuel reservoir and must not be used as a fuel storage cont ainer.
Basic components 15 EMU25830 Fuel joint This joint is used to connec t the fuel line. EMU25841 Fuel gauge This gauge is located on either the fuel tank cap or on the fuel joint ba se. It shows the ap- proximate amount of fuel remaining in the tank. EMU25850 Fuel tank cap This cap seals the fuel tank.
Basic components 16 EMU26201 Neutral interlock tr igger To shift out of neutral, first pull the neutral in- terlock trigger up. EMU26211 Neutral throttle lever To open the throttle without shifting into eithe r forward or reverse, pu t the remote control le - ver in the neutral position and lift the neutral throttle lever.
Basic components 17 EMU25941 Throttle grip The throttle grip is on the tiller handle. Turn the grip counterclockw ise to increase speed and clockwise to decrease speed. EMU25961 Throttle indicator The fuel consumption curve on the throttle in- dicator shows the relativ e amount of fuel con - sumed for each throttle position.
Basic components 18 When constant speed is desired, tighten the adjuster to maintain the de sired throttle set- ting. EMU25990 Engine stop lanyard switch The lock plate must be attached to the engine stop switch for the engine to run. The lanyard should be attache d to a secure place on the operator ’ s clothing, or arm or leg.
Basic components 19 EMU26011 Choke knob for pull type To supply the engine with the ric h fuel mixture required to start, pull out this knob . EMU26070 Manual star ter handle To start the engine, first gently pull the handle out until resistance is felt.
Basic components 20 tor up. Pressing the switch “” (down) tilts the outboard motor down. W hen the switch is released, the outboard motor will stop in its current position. NOTE: For instructions on using the po wer tilt switch, see pages 36 and 38.
Basic components 21 EMU26312 Tilt lock mecha nis m The tilt lock mechanism is used to prevent the outboard motor from lifting out of the water when in reverse gear. To lock it, s et the tilt lo ck lever i n the “” (lock) position. To release, pu sh the tilt lock le - ver in the “” (release) position.
Basic components 22 EMU26460 Flushing device This device is used to cl ean the cooling wate r passages of the motor us ing a garden hose and tap water. NOTE: For details on usage, see page 50. EMU26300 Warning indicator If the engine dev elops a condition w hich is cause for warning, the indicator lights up.
Basic components 23 EMU26801 Warning system CAUTION: ECM00090 Do not continue to operate the engine if a warning device has activated. Consult your Yamaha dealer if the problem cannot be located and corrected. EMU30164 Low oil pressu re warning If the oil pressure drops too low, the warning device will activ ate.
Operation 24 EMU26901 Installation CAUTION: ECM00110 Incorrect engine height or o bstructions to smooth water flow (such as the design or condition of the boat, or accessories such as transom ladders or depth finder tr ans- ducers) can create airborne water spray while the boat is cr uising.
Operation 25 tends to occur, thus reducing the propulsion; and if the propeller tips cut the air, the engine speed will rise ab normally and ca use the en- gine to overheat. If the mounting height is too low, the water resi stance will increase and thereby reduce en gine efficiency.
Operation 26 3. Secure the clamp bracket to the transom using the bolts provided with the o ut- board (if packed). For details, consult your Yamaha dealer. W ARNING EWM00650 Avoid using bolts, nuts or washers other than those contained in the engine pack- aging.
Operation 27 ● The controls should work smoothly, without binding or unusual free play. ● Look for loose or damaged conn ections. ● Check ope ration of the starter and stop switches when the o utboard motor is in the water. EMU27140 Engine ● Check the engine and engine mounting.
Operation 28 As gasoline has changed, the amount of addi- tives such as aromatics and oxy genates has increased. These additives are important for the engines in passen ger cars, but they can have detrimental effects i n marine engines, because of increas ed deposits i n the combus- tion chamber.
Operation 29 3. If a steering fric tion adjuster is provided on your outb oard motor, securely attach the fuel line to the fuel line clamp . NOTE: During engine operation place the tank h ori- zontally, otherwise fuel cannot be drawn from the fuel tank.
Operation 30 4. Pull out / turn the chok e knob fully. After the engine s tarts, replace / return the knob to the home position. NOTE: ● It is not necessary to use the choke when starting a warm engine. ● If the choke k nob is l eft in the “” (start) position while the engine is running, the en- gine will run poorly or stall.
Operation 31 NOTE: The start-in-gear protection device prevents the engine from starti ng except when in neu - tral. 2. Attach the engine stop switch lanyard to a secure place on you r clothing, or your arm or leg. Then install the lock plate on the other end of the lanyard into the en- gine stop switch.
Operation 32 NOTE: ● On remote controls equi pped with a neutral throttle lever, a good starting point is to lift the lever just until you feel resistance, then lift slightly more. ● The neutral throttle lever or free accel erator can only be use d when the remote control lever is in neutral.
Operation 33 ● In temperatures of -5 ° C or less, leav e the choke knob pulled out fully for approximate - ly 30 seconds after starting. 2. Check for a steady flow of water from the cooling water pilot hole.
Operation 34 EMU27795 Reverse (manua l tilt and hydro tilt models) W ARNING EWM00190 When operating in reverse, go slowly. Do not open the throttle more than half. Other- wise the boat could become uns table, which could result in loss of c ontrol and an accident.
Operation 35 EMU27820 Stopping engine Before stopping the engine, first let it cool o f f for a few minutes at idle or low speed. Stop- ping the engine im mediately after operating at high speed is not recomm ended. EMU27832 Procedure 1. Push and hold the engine stop button un- til the engine comes to a co mplete stop.
Operation 36 2. After stopping the engine, disconnect the fuel line or close the fuel cock if there is a fuel joint or a fuel cock on the boat. 3. Tighten the air vent screw on the fuel tank cap (if equipped). 4. Remove th e key i f the boat will be left un- attended.
Operation 37 3. Reposition the rod in the desired hole. To raise the bow ( “ trim -out ” ), move the rod away from the transom. To lower the bow ( “ trim-in ” ), move the rod to- ward the transom. Make test runs with the tr im set to different an - gles to find the position tha t works best f or your boat and operating co nditions.
Operation 38 NOTE: Stay within the trim operating angle when trimming the outboard motor using the power tilt system. To raise the bow ( “ trim-out ” ), tilt the engine up.

Operation 42 ● Run the boat at the lowest possible speed when using the shallow water cruising system. The tilt lock mecha- nism does not work while the shallow water cruising system is being used. Hit- ting an underwater obstacle could cause the outboard motor to lift out of the water, resulting in loss of contr ol.
Operation 43 4. To return the outboard motor to the nor- mal running posi tion, place the gear shift lever in neutral, then place the tilt lock le - ver in the lock/down po sition. 5. Slightly tilt the outboard motor up until the tilt support bar automatical ly returns to the free position.
Operation 44 3. To return the outboard motor to the nor- mal running positio n, press the power trim / tilt sw itch and slowly tilt the out- board motor down.

Maintenance 47 ● DO NOT fill fuel container to maximum capacity. Gasoline will expand consider- ably as it warms up and can build up pressure in the fuel container. This can cause fuel leakage a nd a potential fire hazard. W ARNING EWM00700 Never get under the lower unit w hile it is tilted, even if a motor support bar is used.
Maintenance 48 the outboard motor on its side (not up- right), put it on a cushion after draining the engine oil. ● Do not place the outboard motor on its side before the cooling w ater has drained from it completely, otherwise water may enter the cylinder through the exhaust port and cause engine trouble.

Maintenance 55 EMU28950 Cleaning and a djusting spark plug W ARNING EWM00560 When removing or installing a spark plug, be careful not to damage the insulator. A damaged insulator could allow exter nal sparks, which could lead to explosion or fire. The spark plug is an important engine compo- nent and is easy to inspect.
Maintenance 56 ● Check for fuel leakage regularly. ● If any fuel leakage is found, the fuel sys- tem must be repaired by a qualified me - chanic. Improper repairs can make the outboard unsafe to operate. Check the fuel li nes for leaks, crack, or mal - function.
Maintenance 57 NOTE: Correct idling sp eed inspection is only possi- ble if the engine i s fully warmed up. If not warmed up fully, the idle spee d will measure higher than normal. If you have difficulty veri- fying the idle speed, or the idle speed requires adjustment, consult a Yama ha dealer or other qualified mechanic.
Maintenance 58 tighten 1/4 to 1/2 turn m ore. Tighten the drain screw to the correct torque with a torque wrench as soon as pos sible. 4. Add the correct am ount of oil through the filler hole. Install the filler cap. 5. Start the engine and watch to make sure the low oil pressure warning i ndicator (if equipped) turns off.
Maintenance 59 EMU29130 Water leak age Start the engine and check that no water leaks from the j oints between the e xhaust cover, cylinder head, and body cylinder. EMU29140 Engine oil le akage Check for oil leaks on the around the engine. NOTE: If any leaks are found, consult your Yamaha dealer.
Maintenance 60 Checkpoints ● Check each of the propeller blades for wear, erosion from cav itation or ventilation, or other damage. ● Check the propeller shaft for damage. ● Check the splines / shear pi n for wear or damage. ● Check for fish li ne tangled around the pro- peller shaft.
Maintenance 61 EMU29230 Installing the propeller CAUTION: ECM00340 ● Be sure to install the thrust washer be- fore installing the propeller, otherwise the lower case and propeller boss could be damaged. ● Be sure to use a new cotter pin and bend the ends over securely.
Maintenance 62 CAUTION: ECM00710 Inspect the used oil after it has been drained. If the oil is milky, water is getting into the gear case which can cause gear damage. Consult a Yamaha dealer for re- pair of the lower unit seals. N O TE: For disposal of us ed oil con sult your Yamaha dealer.

Maintenance 65 ● Connect the red battery cable fir st when installing the battery and disconnect the black battery ca ble first when removing it. Otherwise, the electrical parts can be damaged. ● The electrical contacts of the battery and cables must be clean and properly connected, or the battery will not start the engine.

Trouble Recovery 72 EMU29670 Engine fails to operate EMU29691 Ignition system malfunction If the battery voltage is low or in the unli kely event of an ignition system malfunctio n, the engine speed may become erratic or the en- gine may stop. In such a situation, follow the procedure below.
