10 SELECTING SETTINGS FOR THE FUNCTION The general p rocedure for con figuring setti ngs for the fax function is explained b elow. Follow this procedure to configure the sett ings explained on pa ge s 6 through 9. 1 Press the [MODE SELECT] key to select fax mode.

16 ABOUT THE LIQ U ID CR YST AL DISPLA Y The machine is equipped with a two-line liquid crystal display (LCD) on the operation panel f or displaying various messages and setting s during oper ation. This L CD can display up to 20 character s on each line.
17 2 ADJUSTING THE RINGING V OLUME Adjust the ringing volume of the machine follo wing the procedur e below. 1 Press the [M ENU] key. 2 Press the [ ] key ( ) or [ ] key ( ) until "4:USER PR OGRAM" appears, and then press th e [ENTER] key.

25 INITIAL SETTINGS 2 Daylight Saving Time Setting Enable this setting to ha ve the inte rnal clock automaticall y move forwa rd and backward at the beg inning and e nd of Daylight Saving Time . Follow these steps to enable Daylight Savin g Time. 1 Press the [M ENU] key.
26 INITIAL SETTINGS SELECTING THE TRANSMISSION MODE The machin e has two m odes for se nding faxes : memory tr ansmission and direct transmission. To change modes, press the [MEMORY] ke y. The MEMORY indicator lights up when memory transmission is selected, and goes off when direct transmission is select ed.
27 INITIAL SETTINGS 2 SELECTING THE RECEPTION MODE Your machine has three mod es for receiving incoming calls and fa xes: ● AUTO mode: Select this mode when you only want to receive faxes on your telephon e line. The machine will automatically answer all calls and receive incoming faxes.
28 INITIAL SETTINGS SETTING THE NUMBER OF RINGS FOR A UT O RECEPTION You can set the number of rings before th e machine answers in AUTO mode fo llowing the procedure be low. 1 Press the [M ENU] key. 2 Press the [ ] key ( ) or [ ] key ( ) until "4:USER PR OGRAM" appears, and then press th e [ENTER] key.
29 INITIAL SETTINGS 2 SETTING THE NUMBER OF RINGS FOR MANU AL RECEPTION The num ber of rings b efore the m achine answe rs in MANUAL m ode can al so be set. If you do not want the ma ch ine to an swe r at all in MANUAL Mode, select "0" in Step 4 below.
30 INITIAL SETTINGS SETTING THE TRA Y SELECTION (when the 250-sheet paper feed unit is installed) Follow the steps below to select the paper tray for re ceived faxes. 1 Press the [M ENU] key. 2 Press the [ ] key ( ) or [ ] key ( ) until "4:USER PR OGRAM" appears, and then press th e [ENTER] key.
31 INITIAL SETTINGS 2 SETTING THE DIAL MODE The machine can be used with bot h touch-tone and pu lse telephon e lines. Touch-tone uses to nes of different pitches for each numeric ke y, while pulse lines use a series of pulses. Yo ur machine m ust be set to m atch the kind of telephone line you are usin g: touch-tone or pulse.
32 INITIAL SETTINGS SETTING THE NUMBER OF RECALL TIMES The machine will automatically reattempt transmission when a transmission is not su ccessful because the line is busy or a communication error occurs. This setting is used to select the number of reca ll attempts that will be made.
33 INITIAL SETTINGS 2 When a communication error occurs You can select the nu mber of recall attempt s ma de when a communication err or occurs. If "0" is entered, the machine will not make any recall attempts.
34 INITIAL SETTINGS SETTING THE RECALL INTER V AL The machine will automatically reattempt transmission when a transmission is not su ccessful because the line is busy or a communication error occurs. This setting is used to select the interval betwee n recall attempts.
35 INITIAL SETTINGS 2 When a communication error occurs You can se lect the interv al between r ecall attempts when a comm unication er ror occurs. An interval from 0 to 15 minutes can be selected. If the recall interv al is set to 0 minutes, the machine w ill immedi ately call again after breaking the connection due to the communication error.
36 INITIAL SETTINGS SETTING THE INDEX FUNCTION You can print an index mar k along the edge of the pages in each job. This makes it easy to separat e differen t job s on the output tr ay. Use the following procedur e to set the index functio n: 1 Press the [M ENU] key.
37 INITIAL SETTINGS 2 SETTING RESOLUTION PRIORITY For most faxing jobs, you will most likely want to specify the resolution. However, you can also set a default resolution when no setting is made using the [RESOLUTION] key. To turn on th is function, follo w the proced ure below: 1 Press the [M ENU] key.
38 INITIAL SETTINGS SETTING UP THE MA CHINE FOR USE WITH A PC MODEM The machine is set to automatically begin reception if you pick up from an extension te lephone and the machin e detects a fax tone.
39 INITIAL SETTINGS 2 USING THE REMO TE RECEPTION FUNCTION The machin es Remote R eception feat ure is design ed to allow y ou to activate fax reception from an exte nsion telephone. T he Remote Re ception fun ction ope rates even when the FAX Signal Receive function is turned off .
40 INITIAL SETTINGS Setting a Fax Remot e Number: 1 Press the [M ENU] key. 2 Press the [ ] key ( ) or [ ] key ( ) until "4:USER PR OGRAM" appears, and then press th e [ENTER] key. 3 Press the [ ] key ( ) or [ ] key ( ) until "13:FAX RE MOTE NUMBER" appears, and then press the [ENTER] key.
41 INITIAL SETTINGS 2 DISTINCTIVE RINGING Distinctive ringing is a service of fered by some telep ho ne companies th at allows you to use up to six different telephone number s, each with a dist inctive ringing pat tern, on your reg ular single line.
42 INITIAL SETTINGS ST ORING NUMBERS FOR A UT OMA TIC DIALING Automatic Dialing is a qui ck and conveni ent way to dia l by using only a Rapid key (Rapid Key Dialing), or p ressing the [SPEED/SEARCH] key and select the SPEED and entering a two di git number (Speed Dialing).
43 INITIAL SETTINGS 2 9 Enter the name of the destination with the numeric keys. Enter the name of the location or party by pressing numeric keys as described in "HOW TO ENTER CHARACTERS" on page 20 (maximum of 20 characters). If you do not want to enter a name, skip this step.
44 INITIAL SETTINGS Use the following procedur e to clear numbers: 1 Press the [M ENU] key. 2 Press the [ ] key ( ) or [ ] key ( ) until "2:ENTRY MO DE" appears, and then press the [ENTER] key. 3 Press the [ ] key ( ) or [ ] key ( ) until "1:FAX NUMBE R" appears, and then press the [ENTER] key.
45 INITIAL SETTINGS 2 ST ORING NUMBERS UNDER GR OUP KEYS Group keys allow you to dial a group of fa x numbers by si mply pre ssing the appropr iate Group key on ce. They are convenient for t he Broadcastin g function, which is used to transmit an original t o a group of fax machines.
46 INITIAL SETTINGS 9 Enter a name for t he Group Key with the numeric keys. Enter the name of the group by pressin g numeric keys as described in "HOW TO ENTER CHARACTERS" on page 20 (maximum of 20 characters). If you do not want to enter a name, skip this step.

48 USING THE MA CHINE WITH AN ANSWERING MA CHINE QUIET DETECT TIME Quiet Detect Time is the functio n t hat enables the mach ine to be used along with an answe ring machine for both phone messages and fa xes.
49 INITIAL SETTINGS 2 If Quiet Detect Time is not working properly... With some answering machines, there is simply no Quiet Detect Time that will allow both rece ption of faxes and uninterrupted voice message s. Even in this case, however , you can set up the machine to receive both phone and fax messages from calle rs on touch- tone lines.
50 3 Chapter 3 CHOOSING SUIT ABLE MEDIA ORIGINALS SUIT ABLE FOR F AXING Make sure t hat the origin als you want to fax meet specific ations and guidelin es listed in this section. SIZE AND WEIGHT The size and weight of origina ls that you can load in the RADF depend on whether you load one sheet at a time or several sheets at once.
51 CHOOSING SUIT ABLE MEDIA 3 UNSUIT ABLE ORIGINALS General guidelines: ● All clips, staples, and pins should be removed from or iginals before they are use d. If these are not re moved, they may damage the machine. ● Ink, glue, and corr ection fluid on origina ls must be completely dry before using the originals with the machin e.

53 HO W T O USE THE F AX FUNCTION 4 When placing the Original on the document glass: 1 Confirm that there ar e no original(s) in the RADF, and open the RADF. 2 Place the original face down on the document glass. Align the original according to the original scale in the illustration below.
54 OPTIONAL TRANSMISSION SETTINGS There are several transmission se ttings that you can make before dialing and transmitti ng an original. ORIGINAL SIZE The original size can be set to "8.5x11", "8.5x1 4", or "A4". The setting is only ef fective for one transmissio n.
55 HO W T O USE THE F AX FUNCTION 4 RESOLUTION To do this, press the [RESOLUTION] key one or more times until t he desired resoluti on settings appe ar in the display, and then pr ess the [ENTER] key. Your fax h as five resolution settings: • STANDARD Use STANDARD for ordinary originals.
56 HO W TO USE THE F AX FUNCTION CO VER SHEET You can have your fax gener ate a cover sheet and send it as the last page of th e transmission. The cover sh eet includes the date and time, the sender' s na me and number, and the receiver's name and num ber if an automat ic dialing number is used.
57 HO W T O USE THE F AX FUNCTION 4 MESSA GE FUNCTION One of the following messages ca n be selected: "CONFI DENTIAL", "PLS. DISTRIBUTE", "URGENT", "PLS. CALL BACK", "IMPORTANT". To add a message to a cover sheet, follow these steps: 1 Press the [COV ER SHEET] key.
58 HO W TO USE THE F AX FUNCTION TW O-SIDED ORIGINAL TRANSMISSION FUNCTION (when an RADF is installed) The RADF can be used to automatically f ax a two-sided original. I f desired, the back of the original can be rotated 180° before transmission. Follow these steps to fax a t wo-sided original: 1 Place the original (s) in the RADF.
59 4 DIALING AND TRANSMITTING Once you have set the original (eithe r in the RADF or on the document glass), and have selected th e desired transmission setti ngs, you are re ady to dial the number of the receiving fax machine and t ransmit the original.
60 HO W TO USE THE F AX FUNCTION CHAIN DIALING The Chain Dialing function allo ws yo u to combine a Rapid Key or Spee d Dial number (See "STORING NUMBERS FOR AUTOMATIC DIALING" (p.42)) set for Chain Dialing with anothe r Rapid Key, Speed Di al number, or numbe r dialed with the numeric keys t o dial one fax number up t o 50 d igits long.
61 HO W T O USE THE F AX FUNCTION 4 USING THE SEARCH KEY If you do not rememb er t he Rapid key or Speed Dial number in which you ha ve stored a particula r fax number, you can search fo r the number by fo llowing the steps be low: 1 Press the [S PEED/SEARCH] key twice.
62 IF THE MEMOR Y BECOMES FULL WHILE SCANNING AN ORIGINAL If the memory becomes full while sc anning an original, "MEMORY FULL ER ROR" will appear in the display and scanning will stop. If the memory becomes full while the first page is being scann ed, scanning will stop and the transmission will be canceled.
63 4 RECEIVING F AXES You can set the machine t o one of three mode s of reception , AUTO , MAN. , or A.M. (Answering Machine). To select the rece ption mode, press the [RECEPTI ON MODE] ke y until the d esired recept ion mode app ears in the display.
64 OPTIONAL RECEPTION SETTINGS The machine ha s var iou s op tio na l set ting s fo r the rec ep tio n of faxe s. TW O-SIDED RECEPTION (e-STUDIO203SD only) This function is used to prin t a receiv ed fax consisting of two or more pages of the same size on both sides of the paper.
65 HO W T O USE THE F AX FUNCTION 4 RECEIVE REDUCE You may on occasion re ceive f axes tha t are lar ge r tha n the pa per lo ade d in the machin e. To en su re th at you do not lose any part of the orig inal, you sho uld use the Receive Reduce f unction , which scales th e fax to t he printing paper size.
66 WHEN USING MANU AL SENDING AND RECEIVING You need to use the [SPEAKER] key or an extension tel ephone to perform manual se nding and rece iving. For information abou t connecting a n extension tel ephone See "CONNECTIN G OTHER DEVICES" (p.
67 5 Chapter 5 SPECIAL FUNCTIONS MEMOR Y Your machine has a memory area that can be used to store both incomi ng faxes and outgoing originals. ● Approximately 120 pages of average co ntent can be held in memory fo r transmission a nd reception . Less can be held if any of the pages were scanned usin g fin e or superfine resoluti on .
68 D A T A TRANSFER If there is a prob lem with the machine, yo u can use the Data Transfer function to ha ve received faxes r ead into memory and then sent t o a different fa x machine for prin ting. This function is used when you cannot p rint received faxes, for examp le when t he machine ru ns out of t oner, or a misfeed occurs.
69 SPECIAL FUNCTIONS 5 Follow these steps to use the fax tr ansfer function: 1 Press the [M ENU] key. 2 Press the [ ] key ( ) or [ ] key ( ) until "0:RX DATA TRANSFER" appears, and then press the [ENTER] key. 3 Press the [ ] key ( ) or [ ] key ( ) until "1:DATA TRANSFER" appears, and then press th e [ENTER] key.
70 TRANSMISSION RESER V A TION When your fax is busy receiving an original or transmitting an original from memory , you can "reserve" a transmission by sett i ng the original (either in the RADF or on the document glass), reading it into memory, and entering the fax number.
71 5 BR O ADCASTING This function allows you to send the same original to as many as 100 di fferent locatio ns with just one operation. Once the original is loaded, it is scan ned and stored in memory. The fax numbers you ha ve entered are the n automatically dialed in succession, and the original is transmitt ed t o each locati on.
72 SPECIAL FUNCTIONS Broadcasting using a Group key If the fax machin es to which you want to b roadcast have all been pro grammed in to on e Group key, you can pe rform the broadcasting ope ration using the fo llowing simplif ied procedur e. Refer to "STORING NUMBERS UNDER GROUP KEYS" (p.
73 5 POLLING Polling allows you to request another fa x machine to send an original to your fax machine. In other words, the receiving f ax machine, n ot the transm itting fax mach ine, activate s the transmiss ion. You can use your fax to both poll and be polled by others.
74 SPECIAL FUNCTIONS SERIAL POLLING You can poll several fax machines one at a time with a single serial polling operation. A maximum of 100 fax machines can be polled in one s erial polling operation. Follow these steps to use the serial polling function: 1 Press the [M ENU] key.
75 SPECIAL FUNCTIONS 5 POLLING TRANSMISSION (MEMOR Y POLLING) This function is used t o transmit an original tha t has been scanned int o memory to a fax machine that polls your fax machine.
76 SPECIAL FUNCTIONS Adding a original to polling memory: Use this procedure to ad d an original to another original that has already been scanned into polling memory. Place the origina l in the RADF or on the document glass and follow the st eps below.
77 SPECIAL FUNCTIONS 5 RESTRICTING POLLING MA CHINES (POLLING SECURITY) If you wish to allow only specified fa x m achines to poll yo ur fax machine, enable polling security and program the fax numbers of the ma ch ine s th at are to b e allowe d to p oll yo ur m achin e.

79 5 TIMER OPERA TIONS The timer function all ows you to set a transmission or polli ng operation to b e performed aut oma tically at a time you specify. Up to five transmission oper ations or polling operations can be set at any one time, and the times they will be performed ca n be specified up to a week in adva nce.

81 5 ANTI JUNK F AX You can avoid wasting f ax paper by using the Anti Junk Fax fu nction. This funct ion blocks reception of fa xes from up to ten specified parties. To turn the Anti Junk Fax fea ture on and off, use t he following procedu re: 1 Press the [M ENU] key.
