17 CHAPTER 4 File V olume Operations File System Concepts The following commonly used terms are br iefly described in th e following list. RAID RAID stands for Redundant Array of Independent Disks. RAID systems allow data to be distributed to multiple drives throug h an array controll er for greater data security and recoverabi lity .

Y ou can attach a segment from the same LUN or from a dif ferent LUN. Once you add a segment to a volume, you cannot remove it.

Quotas can only be configured for directories created in this pa nel, not for previously existin g directories .

33 CHAPTER 5 W indows Configuration How to Configur e Microsoft Networking Configuring the domain, work group, or Active Dir ectory Ser vice (ADS) is a W indows function. If you are r unning a pure UNIX network, you do not need to configure either W indows Doma ins or W indows W orkgr oups.

T o add a WINS server: 1. In the navigation panel, select Wi ndows Configuration > Set Up WINS.
Chapter 5 Windows Configuration 37 W indows Shares About Shar es A shared r esource, or shar e, is a local r esource on a server that is accessible to W indows clients on the network. On a NAS server , it is typically a file volume or a sub-tr ee within a volume.
38 Sun StorEdge 5210 NAS Quick Reference Manual • November 2004 How to Configur e Shar es The table at the top of Configure Shares panel (in the W indows Configuration folder) shows information about all existing SMB shar es in the Sun StorEdge 5210 NAS.

40 Sun StorEdge 5210 NAS Quick Reference Manual • November 2004 8. The Container field (optional) specifies th e ADS container in which the share is published. This field is available only if you have enabled ADS for the Sun StorEdge 5210 NAS in the Set Up AD S panel.
Chapter 5 Windows Configuration 41 10. In the Umask field, enter the file creation mask, if any , you want to apply to this share. The umask defines the security po licy for files and directories created in Share mode. It specifies the permission bits to turn off when a file is created.
42 Sun StorEdge 5210 NAS Quick Reference Manual • November 2004 When a user logs on, the server checks for a subdir ectory that ma tches the user ’s name. If a match is found and that share do es not already exist, a temporary shar e is added. When the user logs off, the share is removed.
Chapter 5 Windows Configuration 43 4. Enter the ADS Contai ner . This specifies the ADS container in w hich the shares are published. The sh ares are published in ADS only if you configure ADS for the Sun StorEdge 5210 NAS in the Set Up ADS panel. Enter the path using the share’s cn (common name) folder or ou (organizational unit).

NDMP architecture lets ne twork attached storage vendors ship NDMP-compliant servers that you can use with any NDMP-compliant backup administration application .
