5 VERIFYING SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS The following requirements must be met to use the software describ ed in this manual. * For the types of comp uters and operatin g systems that can run t he software, see "SYSTEM REQUIREMENT S" (page 4).
6 CONNECTING THE MACHINE CONNECTING TO A NETWORK To connect the ma chine to a network, connect th e LAN cable to the machine's network con nector. Use a shielded LAN cable. After connecting the machine to a network, be sur e to configure the IP address and other network settings before installing the softwa re.
7 This section explains how to install th e software and configure setting s so that the printer functi on of the machine can be used with a Windows computer . OPENING THE SOFTWARE SELECTION SCREEN (FOR ALL SOFTWARE) 1 Insert the "Softwa re CD-ROM" into your computer's CD-ROM drive.
8 OPENING THE SOFTWARE SELECTION SCREEN (FOR ALL SOFTWARE) 4 The "SOFTWARE LI CENSE" window will appear. Make sure tha t you understand t he contents of the li cense agreement and then click the [Yes] button . 5 Read the message in t he "Welco me" window a nd then cl ick the [N ext] button.
9 INSTALLING THE PRINTER DRIVER To install the printer driv er, follow the appropria te procedure in this sect ion depending on wh ether the machine is connected to a network or connected by USB cable.
10 INSTALLING THE PRINTER DRIVER X Standard installation When the software selection screen appears in step 6 of "OPENING THE SOFTWARE SELECTION SCREEN (FOR ALL SOFTWARE)" (page 7), perform th e steps below. 1 Click the [Print er Driver] button.

18 INSTALLING THE PRINTER DRIVER X Printing using the IPP function and the SSL function The IPP functi on can be used to print to t he machine over a networ k using HTTP protocol. The IPP functi on can also be used in combination wit h the SSL (encrypted communication) func tion to encrypt the print data.
19 INSTALLING THE PRINTER DRIVER 2 Click the [Custom i nstallation] but ton. 3 When you are asked how the printer is connected, select [ IPP] and click the [Next] butto n. 4 If a proxy se rver is used, sp ecify the proxy serve r and click the [Nex t] button.
20 INSTALLING THE PRINTER DRIVER 5 Enter the machine' s URL and click the [Nex t] button. Enter the URL in the following format: Normal format: http://<the machine's doma in name or IP address>:631* 1 /ipp *1 Normally "6 31" should be entered for t he port number.
21 INSTALLING THE PRINTER DRIVER WHEN THE MACHINE WILL BE CONNECTED WITH A USB CABLE Supported operating sy stems: Windows 98/Me/2000 * /XP * /Server 2003 * / Vista * /Server 2008 * /7 * * Administrator's rights are r equired to install the software.
22 INSTALLING THE PRINTER DRIVER 2 Click the [Custom i nstallation] but ton. 3 When you are ask ed how the pr inter is connect ed, select [Connected to this computer] and click the [Next] button. 4 When you are asked if yo u wish to install the display fonts, select an answer and clic k the [Next] button.
23 INSTALLING THE PRINTER DRIVER 5 Follow the on-s creen instructions. Read the message in the window that appears an d click the [Next] button. When the installation comple ted scree n appears, click the [OK] button. 6 Click the [Close] butto n in the window of step 1.
24 INSTALLING THE PRINTER DRIVER 8 Installation of the PCL6 printer driver begins. When the "Found New Hard ware Wizard" appears, select [Install the software automatically (Recommended) ], click the [Next] button, and follow the on-screen instructions.
25 INSTALLING THE PRINTER DRIVER When installing the PCL5e printer dr iver, PS printer driver, or PPD drive r Installation is possible eve n after the USB cable has been connected. When the software select ion screen appears in ste p 6 of "OPENING THE SOFTW ARE SELECTION SCREEN (FOR ALL SOFTWAR E)" (page 7), perform the steps below.
26 INSTALLING THE PRINTER DRIVER 3 When you are ask ed how the pr inter is connect ed, select [Connected to this computer] and click the [Next] button. 4 When the port selectio n window a ppears, se lect the po rt that the PCL6 printer driv er is using (USB001, etc.
27 INSTALLING THE PRINTER DRIVER 6 Select whether or not yo u wish the printer to be your default print er and click the [Ne xt] button. If you are installing multiple drivers, select the printer dr iver to be used as the default printer. If you do not wish to set one of the printer dr i vers as the default printer, select [No].
28 INSTALLING THE PRINTER DRIVER This completes the installati on. • After installation, see "CON FIG URING THE PRINTER DRIVER FOR THE OPTIONS INSTALLED ON TH E MACHINE" (page 34) to conf igure the printer driver settings. • Make sure th at the port of the in stalled driver is the same as the port us ed by the PCL6 printer drive r.
29 INSTALLING THE PRINTER DRIVER USING THE MACHINE AS A SHARED PRINTER If you are going to use the machine as a shared printer on a Windows network with the printer driver installed on a print server, follow the steps below to install the printer driver on the client computers.
30 INSTALLING THE PRINTER DRIVER 1 Click the [Print er Driver] button. 2 Click the [Custom i nstallation] but ton. 3 Select [Shared Pri nter] and click th e [Next] button.
31 INSTALLING THE PRINTER DRIVER 4 Select the print er name (config ured as a shared printe r). (1) Select the printe r name (configured as a shared printer on a print server) from th e list.
32 INSTALLING THE PRINTER DRIVER USING THE STANDARD WINDOWS PS PRINTER DRIVER (Windows 98/Me/NT 4.0) If you wish to use the standar d Windows 98/Me/NT 4.0 PS printer driver, follow the steps below to install the PPD dr iver using th e Add Printer Wizard.
33 INSTALLING THE PRINTER DRIVER X Installing the resident font information (Windows 98/Me) If you have installed the PPD driver on Windows 98/Me and will be using the resident fonts in the machine, you must install the resident font inf ormation. Follow the procedure belo w to install the resident font infor mation.
34 INSTALLING THE PRINTER DRIVER CONFIGURING THE PR INTER DRIVER FOR THE OPTIONS INSTALLED ON THE MACHINE After installing the printer driver, you must configure the printe r driver settings appropriatel y for the options that ha ve been installed and the size and type of paper loaded in the mach ine.
35 INSTALLING THE PRINTER DRIVER 4 Click the [Auto Configur ation] button. The settin gs are automatical ly configur ed based on the detected machine status.
36 INSTALLING THE PRINTER DRIVER 6 Click the [OK] button in the printer properties window. If automatic con figuration fa ils, configure th e settings manually. • You can check the op tions that are i nst alled and the tray settings by printing out the "All Custom Setting List" in th e system settings of the machin e.
37 INSTALLING THE PRINTER DRIVER X When the PPD driver is installed 1 Click the [Start] button ( ), click [Cont rol Panel], and the n click [Printer]. • In Windows 7, click the [Start] button and then click [Dev ices and Printers]. • In Windows XP/Server 2003, click the [sta rt] button and then click [Printe rs and Faxes].
38 INSTALLING THE PRINTER STATUS MONITOR Printer Status Monitor is a printer utility that allows general users to check the current statu s of the machine on their com puter screen, such as whether or not the machine is ready t o print.
39 INSTALLING THE PRIN TER STATUS MONITOR 2 Follow the on-s creen instructions. 3 When the in stallation c ompleted sc reen appears , click the [ Finish] button. To have the Prin ter Status Monitor star t automatically when your computer is started, select the [Add this program to your Sta rtup folder] checkbox and click the [Finish] button.
40 CHANGING THE PORT When using the machine in a Windows en vironment, follow the ste ps below to change the port when you have changed the IP ad dress of the machine when the machine is connected with a USB cable . 1 Click the [Start] button ( ), click [Cont rol Panel], and the n click [Printer].
41 CHANGING THE PORT 3 Adding or changing a port. (1) Cl ick the [Ports] ta b. In Windows 98/Me, click the [Details] tab. (2) Clic k the [Add Port] button. 4 Select [SC2 TCP/IP Port] and then clic k the [New Port ] button. In Windows 98/Me, select [Other], [SC2 TCP/IP Port], and then click the [OK] button.
42 CHANGING THE PORT 5 Create the ne w port. (1) Ent er the machine's IP address. ☞ Checking the IP address of the machine (page 6) (2) Make sure that [LPR] is s elected. (3) Make sure that [lp] is entered . (4) Clic k the [OK] button. 6 Click the [Close ] button in the screen of step 4.

44 MAC OS X 4 Double-click the folder corresponding to the versions of th e operating syst em. 5 Double-click the [MX-PBX1] icon ( ). 6 Click the [Continue] but ton. 7 The License Agreemen t window will app ear. Make sure th at you understand t he contents of the li cense agreement and then click the [Continue] button.
45 MAC OS X 8 Select the h ard drive where the PPD file wi ll be inst alled and clic k the [Continue] button. • Be sure to select the hard drive on wh ich your operating system is installed. • In Mac OS X v10.6, the scree n below appears when you click the [Change Install Location] button.
46 MAC OS X 11 Select [Util ities] from the [Go] menu. • If you are using Mac OS X v10.5 to 10.5.8 or v10.6, click [System Preferences] in the App le menu ( ) and select [Print & Fax] ( ). When the screen for adding a printer appears, click the button and go to step 14.
47 MAC OS X 14 Configure the pr inter driver. • The procedure for configuring the prin ter driver varies dependin g on the operating system version. The procedure fo r version s 10.4.11, 10.5 - 10.5.8 and 10.6 and the procedure for other versi ons are explained sepa rately below.
48 MAC OS X (1) Select [AppleTal k]. If multiple AppleTalk zones are displaye d, select the zone that includes th e printer from the menu. (2) Click the machine's mode l name. The machine's model nam e usually appears as [SCxxxxxx]. ("xxxxxx" is a sequence of characters that varies depending on your model .
49 MAC OS X 15 Display printe r information. (1) Click the ma chine's name. If you are using Mac OS X v10.5 to 10.5.8 or v10.6, click the [Options & Supplies] button, click the [Driver] tab and go to step 16. (2) Clic k [Show Info]. If you are us ing Mac OS X v1 0.
50 MAC OS X X Printing using th e IPP function The machine can print using the IPP function. If you wish to use the IPP function, follow th ese steps to select the PPD file when configuring the printer driver (step 14 on pa ge 47). (1) Clic k the [IP Printer] icon.
51 MAC OS X (1) Select [IP Pr inting]. (2) Select [Internet Printing Proto col] in "Printer Type". Enter the address of the mac hine (IP address or domai n name) and the "Queue Name". • If you are using Mac OS X v10.2.8, enter the address of th e machine (IP address or domain na me) in "Printer's Addres s".
52 MAC OS 9.0 - 9.2.2 1 Insert the "Softwa re CD-ROM" into your computer's CD-ROM drive. Insert the "Softwar e CD-ROM" that shows "Disc 2" on the front of the CD-ROM. 2 Double-click the [CD-ROM] ic on ( ) on the desk top.
53 MAC OS 9.0 - 9.2.2 7 Read the message in the window that app ears and click the [Continue] button. Installation of the PPD file begins. After the installation, a message promptin g you to restart your computer will appear. Click the [OK] butto n and restart your computer.
54 MAC OS 9.0 - 9.2.2 10 Select the PPD file. (1) Clic k the PPD file for your model. (2) Cl ick the [Select] b utton. 11 Make sure that the machine is select ed in the "Select a PostScript Printer" list and the n click the [Setup] button. 12 Click the [Configure] butto n.
55 MAC OS 9.0 - 9.2.2 13 Select the machi ne configuration . (1) Select the opt ions that are in stalled on the ma chine. (2) Clic k the [OK] button . 14 Click the [OK] button in the window of step 12 to close the window. 15 Click the close box ( ) to close the "Chooser".
56 WHEN INSTALLATION WAS NOT SUCCESSFUL This section provides solutions to possible installation problems. See the following table of contents to locate the appropriate page for your question or problem. 4 TROUBLESHOOTING • The softwa re cannot be installed.
57 WHEN INSTALLATION WAS NOT SUCCESSFUL The machine is not detected (when connected to a network). Is the IP address of the machine configured? If the IP address of the ma chine is not configured, the machine wil l not be detected.
58 WHEN INSTALLATION WAS NOT SUCCESSFUL The plug and play screen does not appear (USB connection in Windows). Is the machine power on? When a USB cable is connected, make sure the power of the machine is "ON" and then co nnect a USB cable to the machine.
59 WHEN INSTALLATION WAS NOT SUCCESSFUL The printer driver is not installed correctly by plug and play (USB connection in Windows). Did you connect th e machine to your computer before installing the .
60 WHEN INSTALLATION WAS NOT SUCCESSFUL X The printer driver cannot be installed (Windows 2000/XP/Server 2003) If the printer driver cannot be installed on Windows 2000/XP/Server 200 3, follow the steps below to check your computer settings. 1 Click the [start] button and then click [C ontrol Panel].
61 REMOVING THE SOFTWARE To remove the printer driver or software installed using the installer, follow the steps below. X Windows 1 Click the [start] button and then click [Control Pane l]. In Windows 98/Me/NT 4.0/200 0, click the [Sta rt] button, point to [Settings], and cli ck [Control Panel].
62 REMOVING THE SOFTWARE X Mac OS X 1 Delete the p rinter that us es the ma chine 's PPD file from the print er list. To show the printer list, see step 11 and 12 of "MAC OS X" (page 43). 2 Delete the PPD fi le. The PPD file has been copied to the following fo lder on the startup disk.
