1 Product Overview Introduction The Avocent LongView® IP KVM extender system, which incl udes a transmitter and a user station, provides users with a full workstation desktop experience from a nywhere on the corporat e TCP/IP network, while maintaining th e target co mputers securely housed in a corporate data center.
2 LongView® IP KVM Extenders Installer/User Guide Ethernet addre ssing The user station and the transmi tter are IP-addressable devices, giving you the flexibility to locate them anywhere within your enterpri se and at any distance from your desktop users.

4 LongView® IP KVM Extenders Installer/User Guide Multiplat form support The LongView IP KVM transmitter is connected to the target computer via USB connectors. This enables the user station to interoperate seamlessly with PC, Sun ® and M acintosh ® workstations.

9 Installation Getting S t arted Before installing your LongVi ew IP KVM extender system, refer to the list below to ensure that you have all the items n ecessary for installation.
10 LongView IP KVM Extenders Installer/User Guide Mounting Option The user station for each LongView IP KVM extender system mounts to either the rear of a flat panel monitor via a mounting plat e accessory (ordered separately) or is desk-mountable via a mounting kit, al so available from Avo cent.
Chapter 2: Installation 11 CAUTION: T o reduce the risk of electric shock or damage to your equipment, disconnect t he power from the user station by unplugging the power supply fr om the electrical outlet. Also, turn on the target computer and the user station in the order described in the f ollowing procedures.

Connect your keyboard, mo nitor , mouse and oth er peripheral cables to the appropriately labeled ports on the back of the user station. 2. Connect the UTP cable from the transmitter to the RJ-45 port on the back of the user station.
Chapter 2: Installation 19 Transmitters and user stations may be config ur ed for use on a single subnet or for use across routers. Use of routers, however, will cause a s light increase in end-to-end latencies, wh ich may not be acceptable for all applications.

21 Operations Overview Operating a target computer thro ugh the LongView IP KVM extender system is no different than working directly connected to y our target computer. All periph erals operate as if directly connected, even though the target co mputer is located at a distance.
22 LongView® IP KVM Extenders Installer/User Guide Accessing the System A LongView IP KVM user station will autom atically initiate a connection with t he target computer. A series of messages will be displayed on th e screen to inform you of the progress of the connection.

A message will display indicating that the firmware upgrade has failed.

Chapter 3: Operations 41 Configuring V ideo Input Settings The LVIP-R and LVIPHR-R user stations are capable of transmitting either dig ital (DVI) or analog video (VGA) from the target com puter to your moni tor. The LVIPDH-R user station is capable of transmitting DVI only from the target computer to you r analog or digital monitor.

51 CHAPTER 4 Share Mode Using Share Mode Share Mode allows multiple users (up to eight user stations per transmitter) to share the audio and video of a target computer over the network and arbitrate for control of that computer.
