4 This chapter provides basi c information for using the unit. USING THE MANU ALS In addition to this printed ma nual an online manual is also provi ded. To get full use of all features and functions of this product, be sure to familiarise yourself with both manuals.

8 CHECKING P A CKED COMPONENTS AND AC C E S S O R I E S Open the carton and check if the following components an d accessories are included. If anything is no t included or is dama ged, contact your authorised service representative.
9 2 2 Remove all piec es of tape show n in the illustration below. Then open the original cover/SPF/RSPF and re move protective materials. Afte r that, take out the b ag containing the power cord and TD cart ridge. 3 Release the scan head locking swit ch.
10 INST ALLING THE TD CARTRIDGE 1 Open the multi-bypass tray (AL - 1 553 , AL - 15 5 5, p . 17 ) , and then open the side cover. 2 Push gently on bot h sides of the front cover to open the cover. 3 Remove the TD cartridg e from the bag. Hold the car tridge on both sides and shake it horizontally four or fiv e times.
11 2 5 Close the front cover and then the side cover by pressing the round projections near the side cover open but ton. When closing the cov ers, be sure to close the front cover securely and then close the side cov er . If the co vers are closed in the w rong order , th e cov ers ma y be damaged.
12 CONNECTING THE PO WER CORD 1 Ensure that th e power switch of the unit is in th e OFF position. Insert the attac hed power cord into the pow er cord socket at the rear of the unit. 2 Plug the other end of the power cord into t he nearest ou tlet. Power on Ensure that the power switch of the unit is in the OFF position.
13 2 About the scan he ad The scan head la mp remains on constantly when the u nit is in the ready condi tion (when the start ( ) indicator is illuminated). The unit adju sts the scan head lamp peri odically to main tain copying qua lity. At this time, the scan head moves automati cally.
14 Follow the ste ps below to load paper into the tray. PA P E R For best results, use only paper recommended by SHARP. * Do not use non-standard envelo pes, and envelopes that have metal clasps, plastic snappers, string cl osures, windows, lining s, self-adhesive, patches or synthetic materials.
15 3 LO ADING THE P APER TRA Y 1 Raise the hand le of the paper tray and pull the paper tray out until it stops. 2 Remove the pressu re plate lock. Rotat e the pressure plate lock in the direction of the arrow to remove it whil e pressing down the pressure pl ate of the paper tray.
16 5 Fan the paper and in sert it into th e tray. Make sure the edges go under the corner hooks. 6 Gently push the paper tray back in to the unit. Do not load pa per abov e the maximum height line ( ).

18 The single bypass (AL-1 552 ) 1 Select copy settings bef ore you begin the copy job. For information on the copy settings, see "MAKIN G COPIES" (p.46)". For information on the print settings, see the onli ne manual or the Help file for the printer driver, and then begin printi ng from the single bypass.

20 HARD W ARE AND SOFTW ARE REQ UIREMENTS Check the following hardware and software requirements in order to install the software. * 1 Compatible with Windows 98, Wi ndows Me, Windows 2000 Professional , Windows XP Professional or Windows XP Home Edition prei nstalled model with USB interface equipped as standard.

22 INST ALLING THE SOFTW ARE The following term is used in this section. MFP Means the unit as a printer and scanner. Installing onto Windows XP (USB/parallel interface) Before starting the installation , make sure the USB or parallel interface cable is not connected to the MFP.
23 4 5 Review the so ftware packages to be installed on the screen, and the n click the "Start" button. The software packages to be installed will be displayed on the screen. If inappropriate packages are displayed, click the "Back" button to select appropriate packages ag ain.
24 7 Begin installation of t he Button Manager (This step will start if it was select ed in step 4). 1 After confirming the message in the "Welcome" window, click the "Next" button. 2 Read the message in the "Please r ead the following information.
25 4 10 Make sure that the pow er of the MFP is turned on, and then connect the USB interface ca ble or parallel inte rface cable. (p.45) Windows will detect the MFP and the Plug and Play screen wil l appear. If you are using Windows XP with the parallel interfa ce, go to step 12.
26 Installing onto Windows 98/ Me/2000 (USB interface) Before starting the installation , make sure the USB interface cable is not connected to the MFP. 1 Insert the suppli ed CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. 2 Double-click "My Computer " ( ), and then double-click the CD-ROM ( ) icon.

29 4 Installing onto Window s 95/98/Me/NT4.0/2000 (Parallel interface) Before starting the installation , make sure the USB or parallel interface cable is not connected to the MFP. 1 Insert the suppli ed CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. 2 Double-click "My Computer " ( ), and then double-click the CD-ROM ( ) icon.

32 INDICA T ORS ON THE OPERA TION P ANEL The ONLINE indicator and the start ( ) indica tor indicate the state of the printer or scanner. Start indicator On: Indicates the unit is ready for copying or scanning is bei ng performed. Blinking: The indicator blinks in th e following situations: • When a print job is inte rrupted.
33 4 USING THE PRINTER MODE Opening the printer driver from the start menu Open the printer driver setup screen by either of the methods shown be low. 1 Click the "star t" button. 2 Click "Control Panel", select "Printers and Other Hardware", and then click " Printers and Faxes.
34 3 Make sure t hat "SHARP AL-xxxx" (w here xxxx is the mod el name of your unit) is selected as t he current printer. If you intend to change any pr int setting, cl ick the "Prefere nces" button to open the setting dialog. On Windows 95/98/Me /NT 4.
35 4 USING THE SCANNER MODE The scanner driver for this unit incl udes an STI (Still image) driver and WIA (Windows Im age Acquisitio n) driver. Yo u can install software that supports the STI driver and WIA driver to enable scanning usin g the operation panel of the unit.
36 Windows 98/ Me/2000 To scan directly into an application usin g the Button Manager on Windows 98, Windows Me and Window s 2000. Set the Event Manager properties to send only to Button Manager as shown below.
37 4 Scan Parameter Settings Dialog Box After you have completed the Button Manager settings in Windows, configure the scan settings in Button Ma nager. To configure the scan settin gs in Button Manager, right click the ( ) icon in the Taskbar and select " Setting" from the menu that appears.
38 The settings for the Windo ws Event Manager for the SHARP AL-xxxx (where xxxx is the model name of your unit) device allow the user to take advantage of the Sharp Button Manager to take control of events from Windows and send scanned images to any application that can be selected in Button Manager.
39 4 Using the SCANNER key to begin scannin g 1 Press the SCANNER ( ) key. The unit enters scan mode . 2 Place the origi nal you wish to scan on the original table/ SPF/ RSPF. For the procedure for placing the or iginal, see "ORIGINAL PLACEMENT" (p.
40 4 Press the sta rt ( ) key. Scanning will start and the scanned data will be transferred to the application. Opening the scanner driver and scanning from your computer Follow the steps below to op en the scanner driver setup screen. As an example , this instruction is given using Sharpd esk as an image capture application.
41 4 3 Select "SHARP Personal MFP series", and cli ck the "Select" button. 4 Select "Acquire Image" from the "File" menu , or click the "Acquire" button ( ) . 5 Set the configur ation for scann ing (refer to the onl ine manual and help file), and click the "Sca n" button.
42 Scanning with the "Scanner and Ca mera Wizard" in Windows XP Windows XP include s as a standard feature an image scanning function. The procedure for scanning with the "Scanner and Camera Wizard" is explained here. 1 Place the original you wish to scan on the original table/SPF/RSPF.
43 4 HO W T O USE THE ONLINE MANU AL The online manual provides detailed instruct ion s for operating the unit as the printer or scanner and a list of methods for dealing with printing or scanner problems. To access the online manual, your comput er must have Acrobat Rea der 5.
44 USING O THER INST ALLED DRIVERS If you use another GDI pri nter or a Windows Printing System printer, interference between printers may occur and printing may not be performed properly. To use another GDI printer or a Window s Printing System printer, you must change the port setting of the printer driver using the fo llowing procedure.
45 4 CONNECTING THE INTERF A CE CABLE This unit includes both USB and parallel interface con nectors. Interface cables for connecting the unit to your computer are not included with this unit. Please purchase the appropriate cable for your computer. I Connecting the USB interface cable 1 Obtain a shielde d USB interface cable.
46 This chapter explains basic and other copying function s. The unit is equ ipped with a one-page memory buffer. This memory allows the unit to scan an original once only and make up to 99 copies.
47 5 About interrupt copying If you press the start ( ) key to begin a copy job while a print job using the paper tray or multi-bypass tray is in progress, th e copy job will begin automatically after the print data in the unit's me mory is printed (interrupt copying).
48 Setting a large original (AL-1 552 ) The original cover can be removed to allow copying of bulky objects. 1 Simply lift the original cover straight up.
49 5 Stream feeding mode The stream feeding mode all ows easy operatio n of continuous co pying from the SPF/ RSPF. If the stream feeding mode h as been enabled using user pr ogram No.4, the SPF/RSPF ( ) indicator will b link approximat ely 5 seconds af ter the last or iginal has been fed by t he SPF/RSPF.
50 Automatic exposure adjustment The automatic exposure level can be adjusted to suit your copying needs. This level is set for copying from the original table and copying from the SPF/RSPF respectively.
51 5 REDUCTION/ENLARGEMENT/ZOOM Three preset reduction ratios and two enlargement ratios can be selected. The zoom function enables copy ratio selection from 25% to 400% in 1% increments. 1 Set the origina l and check the pape r size. 2 Use the copy ratio selector key and/or ZOOM ( , ) k eys to select the desi red copy ratio.
52 This chapter describes the special functi ons of this unit. Use these functions as needed. TW O SIDED COPYING When copying from the SPF/RSPF, two-side originals can be copied au tomatically without having to manually turn th em over. Automatic two-sided copying can also be performed without using the SPF/RSPF.
53 6 A: When copying in a one-sided to two-si ded mode: Use the original to copy key to select the d esired one-sided to two-sided copying mode (Turn on Long Edge or Turn on Short Edge).
54 1 2 3 4 DESCRIPTION OF SPECIAL FUNCTIONS Toner save mode (page 54) Reduces toner consumption by approximately 10%. Power save modes ( page 55) The unit has two power save modes of operation: prehea t mode and auto power shut-off mode.
55 6 2 Press and hold down the exposure mode selector key for approximately 5 seconds. The MANUAL ( ) indicator will go out and the PHOTO ( ) indicator will begin to blink. The light and dark indicator marked "5" will light up, indicating the standard toner mode is active.
56 * Factory default settings are indicated with an asterisk (*). 5 Press the start ( ) key. Th e right-hand number in the displa y will be steadily lit and the entered value w ill be stored. 6 Press the light ( ) or dark ( ) key to return to the normal copy mode.
57 7 This chapter describes how to replace the TD cartrid ge and drum cartridge, and how to clear the unit. 60 Transfer charger If copies start becoming streaky or blotchy, the transfer charger may be dirty. Clean the charger using the following procedure. 1 Turn the power switch off.
61 8 This chapter describes misfeed removal and trouble shooting. For problems with the printer function or the scann er function, see the online manual or the Help file for the printer/scan ner driver. 62 ST A TUS INDICA T ORS When the followin g indicators light up or blin k on the operation panel or the following alphanumeric codes a ppear in the display, solve the problem immediately referri ng to both the table below and the relevant page. Be sure to use onl y genuine SHARP par ts and supplies.
63 8 MISFEED REMO V AL When the misfeed ( ) indicator blinks o r blin ks in the display, the unit will stop because of a misfeed. If a misfeed occurs when using the SPF/RSPF, a number may appear in the display afte r a minus sign. This indicates the number of the originals that must be returned to the origin al feeder tray after a misfeed.
64 A: Misfeed in t he paper feed area 1 Gently remove the mis fed paper from the paper feed area as shown in the illus tration. When the misf eed ( ) indi cator blinks, and the misfed paper is not seen from the paper feed area, pull out the paper tr ay and remove the mi sfed paper.
65 8 2 Gently remove the misfed paper from under the fusing unit as shown in the ill ustration. If the paper cannot be removed , proceed to "C: Misfeed in the transp ort area". 3 Raise the fusin g unit release le ver and then close the side cover by pressing the round projections near th e side cover open button.
66 D: Misfeed in the lower paper feed area (AL-1555) 1 Open the lower side cover (under the manual tr ay) and remove the misfed paper. If blinks and the misfed paper is not seen from the area of th e lower side c over, pull out the lower paper tra y and remove the misfed paper.
67 8 (B) Open the SPF/RSPF and rotate the ro ller rotating knob to remove the misfed original from the exit area. If the misfed original cannot be easily removed, proceed to (C). (AL-1555) With the RSPF, pull out the reversing tray to remove the misfed origin al.
