English 26 CA UTION Do not charge the battery pac k immediately after the camera has been in continuous use for a long time i The battery pack becomes hot when the camer a is used continuously f or a long time.
27 English INST ALLING THE BA TTER Y P A CK AND CAR D Install t he car d The card can be used after it has been f ormatted with the camera (page 145). 1 Open the battery/car d compartment cover. 2 Insert the card. h Firmly inser t the card until it clicks into place.
English 28 TURNING THE CAMERA ON AND OFF T urning on the camera 1 Open the monitor unit, and press the ON/OFF button for at least 1 second. h If you p ress the REC/PLA Y button f or at least 1 second, the ca mera turns on in the pla ybac k mode. h If you pre ss the ON/OFF butt on once, the camera will s witch to the power sav e mode.
29 English TURNING THE CAMERA ON AN D OFF T urning off the camera 1 Press the ON/OFF button for at least 1 second. h The camera turns off . h T o tur n off th e camera while it is in the shooting mode or po wer sa ve mode, cl ose the monitor u nit or press the ON/OFF but ton f or at least 1 second.
English 30 OPERA TION BUTT ONS The procedures to change the camer a settings , choose images, etc., ar e perf ormed by using the SET but ton to control the monitor displa y . This operation is used v ery frequently , so it is best to become f amiliar with it right away .
31 English OPERA TION BUTT ONS <Select the icon to the left or right> T o select the icon to the right, toggle the SET butt on to the right. T o select the icon to the left, toggle th e SET button to the left. <Actuate the selected icon> Press the SET b utton.
English 32 D A TE AND TIME SETTING The camera will record the date and time an image or audio recording is taken so that y ou can disp la y them during pla yback. Theref ore, bef ore capturing images, mak e sure the correct date and time are set. Example: T o set the clock to 7:30 p .
33 English D A TE AND TIME SETTING 4 Set the date. 1 Select “D A TE”. 2 Press the SET b utton. h The Set Date Screen appears . 3 Set the date to “2007/ 12/24”. h The date is set in the f ollowing order: Set the year → Set the month → Set the day .

35 English SCREEN DISPLA Y Specify how to s witch the Shooting Screen displa y mode (page 41), and specify the screen displa y during playbac k. 1 Display the OP TION MENU (page 122). 2 Select the info display icon j , an d press the SET button. h The Screen Displa y Screen appears.
English 36 When [ = ] is selected: [OFF]: Show only t he images. [DA TE & TIME]: Show the date an d time (capture date). [COUNTER]: Show the counter . [SHO W ALL]: Show the date/ time and the counter . 4 Toggle the SET button up or down to select the de sired setting, and press the SET button.
37 English BASIC OPERA TION BEFORE T AKING PICTURES For best r esults Hold the camera securely , keeping your elbows c lose to your body and making sure the came ra is stable. Make sure that the le ns and flash ar e not b lock ed b y y our fingers or the neckstrap .
English 38 Using the autof ocus The autofocu s will work in almost all si tuations; howeve r , there a re certain conditions that may cause the autofocus function to not work properly . If the autofocus function is not w orking properl y , set the focus range to capture images (page 78).

41 English BEFORE T AKING PICTURES Switching the disp la y mode In the shooting mode , you can select either t he “settings displa y mode” which allows y ou to confirm the shooting setting s on the monitor while y ou shoot, or the “normal display mode” in which the setting ind ications are turned off , providing a fu ll view of the subject.
English 42 Hints for taking pict ures Muting the operation sounds i The operation so unds that are gener ated, f or e xample , when the [ ] button, ME NU butt on or SET b utton is pressed, as w ell as the audio guidance when you s witch the mode, can be muted (page 126).

English 48 HINT What is the camera fo cusing on? i If the focus r ange (page 78) is set to a setting other than man ual - , a target mark & on the monit or shows the area the camer a is focusing on. i The camera automatically determines the correct f ocus by measuring from 9 diff erent f ocus points within the shooting area.

59 English USING THE ZOOM Y our camera has t wo zo om functions: opt ical zoom and digital z oom. Y ou can specify whether or not the digit al zoom is enab led (page 134). 1 Point the came ra lens at the subject. 2 Push the zoom switc h toward the [T] or [W] side to compose the desired image.
English 60 EXPOSURE CORRECTION By assigning the e xposure correction oper ation shortcut to the SET button (page 135), you can mak e the image lighter or darker when capturing images . 1 Assign the operation shortcut to the SET button (page 135). 2 Toggle the SET button in the direction fo r which the operation shortcut was assigned.
61 English SHOO TING P AGE 1 (BASI C SETTINGS) DISPLA YING THE RECORDING MENU The RECORDING MENU is used to adjust your camer a’ s shooting settings. The RECORDING MENU is organized into two displays: PA G E 1 and PA G E 2 . Y ou can also access the RECORDING MENU from the camera settings screen (OPTION MENU [ page 122]).

67 English IMA GE QU ALITY Video clip image quality setting When it comes to video clips, a lar ger number of pixels and a higher frame rate means bett er image quality a nd smoother pla yback. On the other hand, the file size becomes lar ge and uses more memory .
English 68 Still image resolution setting By setting the still image resoluti on (pixels) to a higher setting, image detail is enhanced for a smoother , finer picture. However , the file size also becomes large and uses more me mory . Select the resolution setting that suits your purpose.
69 English SCENE SELECT Y ou can select from v arious preset settings (ape r ture , shutter speed, etc.) f or specific shooting co nditions. 1 Display PAG E 1 of the RECORDING MENU (page 62). 2 Select the scene select menu. 3 Select the desired icon from t he scene select m enu, and press the SET button.

English 72 SETTING THE FLASH MODE The flash is used n ot only f or taking pi ctures where there is insuff icient light, but also when the subject is in shade or in backlight conditions. Y our camera’ s flash has three modes o f operation ( aut omatic flash mode , f orced flash mode and flash off mode).
73 English SETTING THE FLASH MODE CA UTION Do not touch the flash unit when shooting. i The flash unit becomes very hot and ma y cause a burn. A v oid touching the flash unit when shooting.

79 English FOCUS RANGE How to use the manual f ocus 1 Select the manual focus i con - from the focus menu (page 78), and press the SET button 2 times. h The focus dista nce adjustment bar appears . 2 Toggle the SET button to the right or left to select the desired focus distance, and press the SET button.
English 80 FOCUS AREA SETTING Y ou can choose from the f ollowing 2 type s of aut ofocus (stil l image shooting only): 9-point range find er focus: The distance to the subject is detected b y sampling from m ultiple areas of the entire shoot ing screen.
81 English LIGHT -MEASURING MODE SETTING Y ou can select from 3 types of light-measuring modes . Multi-section light- measuring: The exp osure is adjusted after sampling from mult iple areas of the entire shooting screen.
English 82 ISO SENSITIVITY With the initial se ttings, the ISO sensit ivity is automatically set according to the brightness of the subject. Howe ver , the ISO sensi tivity can be set to a fixed setting. 1 Displa y PAGE 2 of the RECORDING MENU (page 62).
83 English ISO SENSITIVITY HINT i By setting a hi gher ISO sensitivity , you can set h igher shutter speeds and capture images in darker locations , b ut noise in the captured images ma y increase. i By assigning an operation shortcut to the SET bu tton (page 135), y ou can change the ISO setting fr om the Shooting Screen.
English 84 WHITE B A LANCE This camera automati cally adjusts the white balance un der most lighting conditions. Ho we ver , if you w ant to specify the lighting co nditions or change the ov erall ton e of the image, the white bala nce can be manually set.
85 English PLA YBACK P AGE 1 (BASI C SETTINGS) DISPLA YING THE PLA YB A CK MENU The PLA YBA CK MENU is used to adjust yo ur camera’ s playbac k settings . The PLA YBA CK MENU is organiz ed into two displa ys: PA G E 1 and PAG E 2 . Y ou can also access the PLA YBACK MENU from the camer a settings screen (OPTION MENU [page 122]).
