72 SANRAD V-Switch User Manu al Introduction to V-Switch Clusters Two V-Switc hes can b e concurr ently connecte d to the sa me FC sto rage devices to balance volum e exposure thus creating a V-Switch clu ster. In a cluster, each V-Switch int eracts in an active-active, peer-to-p ee r fashion with the oth er V-Switch, or neighbor , in the cluster.
Chapte r 5: V-S witch Clust er Configura tion 73 . When creating a cluster, it is recommended that the same port on each V-Switch is used to connect to the same FC storage device. This increases the chance of the storage device receiving the same default storage number on both V- Switches during their auto-discovery cycles.
74 SANRAD V-Switch User Manu al In Figure 33, V-Switch 1 has gone off-line. V-Switch 2 activates V-Switch 1’s IP address and takes over expo sure of Volume 1 to Host 1, repre sented by the orange dashed line. Host 1 cont inues to access Volume 1 through the same IP address as it did before its V-Switch w ent off-line.
Chapte r 5: V-S witch Clust er Configura tion 75 Configuring a V-Switch Cluster Setting the V-Switch ID When you con figure a cluster, you must give each V-Switch a dif ferent device ID for proper cluster fun ctioning. Use the CLI com mand device set to configur e the V- Switch ID f or each V-Switch.

78 SANRAD V-Switch User Manu al Working with SCSI Storage Devices The V-Switch default SCSI bus ID is 7. If your storage cluster includes SCSI storage devices, on e of the V-Switch’s default SCSI bus ID must be changed. They cannot both be 7 on the same SCS I bus.
Chapte r 5: V-S witch Clust er Configura tion 79 Example: Every 2 seconds V-Switch 1 sends out a keep alive signal. If, after 6 seconds from the last keep alive sign al, V-Switch 1 does not receive an other keep alive signal from its neighbor, it enters a suspicious interva l .

Chapte r 6: Vol ume Configurat ion 83 6 V olume Conf igur ation IN THIS CHAPTER I NTRODUCTION TO V OLUME C ONFIGURATION I DENTIFYING A VAILABLE S TORAGE D EVICES C REATING A T RANSPARENT V OLUME C REA.
84 SANRAD V-Switch User Manu al Introduction to Volume Configuration This chapter describes ho w to identify the SAN storage devices and use them to create subdisk s and virtual volumes. Each description includes: A general description and gen eric diagram.
Chapte r 6: Vol ume Configurat ion 85 Identifying Available Storage Devices The V-Switch supports a maximum of 512 disks. Before beginning to c onfigure vir tual volumes, you need to know which storage devices are available.
86 SANRAD V-Switch User Manu al storage blink activate –s Stor_1 –t 120 Use the CLI command storage blink abort to stop the blinking before the end of the set time.
Chapte r 6: Vol ume Configurat ion 87 The V-Switch also recognizes all write- protected storage device s. Use the CLI command storage details to view a device’s details, in cluding if it is write-protected.
88 SANRAD V-Switch User Manu al Creating a Transparent Volume Transparent volumes cannot be used in further volume hierarchies. Tape devices must be virtualized as transparent volumes.
Chapte r 6: Vol ume Configurat ion 89 10101 Tras par ent Volu me 1 RAID C ont rol le r Disk 1, LUN 0 Figure 36. Transparent V olume 1 After creating the trans parent volume, you can use th e CLI comm and volume show to verify the volume creation.
90 SANRAD V-Switch User Manu al Creating a Subdisk (LUN Carving) The V-Switch supports a maximum of 512 subdisks. You can create on e or more subdisks on a ph ysical disk. The su bd isks can then be converted to sim ple volumes to be used for creating con catena ted, striped and mirro red virtual volumes.
Chapte r 6: Vol ume Configurat ion 91 Disk 3 Disk 7 Disk 8 10066 JBOD 1 JBOD 2 Disk 4 Disk 2 Di s k 5 Disk 6 Disk 1 Figure 38. Disk 1 be fore Subdisk If you are working in a V-Switch cluster, this volume must be configured on both V-Switches. In Figure Error! Bookma rk not defin ed.

S WITC H P ARAMETER D EFINITION S TATUS E XAMPLE -d DISK ALIA S ALIAS OF D ISK TO SHOW SUBDISKS FROM OPTIONAL USE THIS SWITCH TO LIST ONLY THE DETAILS OF A SPECIFIC DISK Disk1 This command calls up the following ta ble.
Chapte r 6: Vol ume Configurat ion 93 Creating a Simple Volume The V-Switch supports a maximum of 512 volumes. Before you can build co ncatenated, mirrored and striped volum es , you must create sim ple volumes from each disk or subdis k in your st or age network.
94 SANRAD V-Switch User Manu al If you are working in a V-Switch cluster, this volume must be configured on both V-Switches. Assigning a volum e alias is optional. If you do not include a volume alias in the command, the volume alias will d efault to the subdisk al ias in which the volum e is located.
Chapte r 6: Vol ume Configurat ion 95 Creating a Concatenated Volume The V-Switch supports a maximum of 512 volumes. To accommodate lar ge volumes of data or to best utilize sma ll v olumes spread over several disks , you can concatenate physical vo lumes across storage devices to create a larger virtual vo lume.
96 SANRAD V-Switch User Manu al The system d efault f or the number of childr en being conca tenate d is two. Therefore, you on ly need to specify the number of children for numbers greater than two. Example: If you are working in a V-Switch cluster, this volume must be configured on both V-Switches.
Chapte r 6: Vol ume Configurat ion 97 Creating a Striped Volume The V-Switch supports a maximum of 512 volumes. A striped vol ume has data writt en equitably acro ss two or mo re disks to provide higher read/w rite rates. Subdisks within a striped vol ume need to be on d ifferent disks to re alize the benefits of striping.

100 SANRAD V-Switch User Manu al Creating a Mirrored Volume Use mirroring to create data backups. The V-Switch supports a maximum of 512 volumes. A mirror ed volume i s synchronously writte n into two or mor e vol umes. Mirrored volumes provide protection aga inst data loss from a ph ysical disk crash.
Chapte r 6: Vol ume Configurat ion 101 Example: If you are working in a V-Switch cluster, this volume must be configured on both V-Switches. In Figure 48, a mirrored volume, M irrored 1, is created using t wo children, Simple 6 and Simple 11.
102 SANRAD V-Switch User Manu al See the working exam ple of off-line data replication “Replicati ng Dat a Off- line,” pag e 264. volume mirror sync You need to defin e two parameters to synchro n.
Chapte r 6: Vol ume Configurat ion 103 Creating a RAID 10 and RAID 0+1 You will need two separate comma nds to create a RAID 1 0 or 0+1 volume. RAID 10 first creates mirrored vo lumes and then creates a striped volume of the mirrored volum es. This gives the advantage of both high performance an d data redundancy.
