Getting Started 4 Section 1: Getting Star ted This section helps you to quickly start using your device. Understanding T his User Manual The sections of this manual generally follo w the features of your device. A robust index for features begins on page 111.
5 T ext Conv entions This manual provides condensed information about how to use your device. T o make this possible, the follow ing text conventions are used to re present ofte n-used steps: Bat ter y Y our device is powered by a re chargeable, standard Li-Ion battery .
Getting Started 6 Charging the Batter y Y our device comes with a W all/USB Charger (Charging Head and USB cable) to charge your device from any standard AC power outlet. Note: The battery comes partially charged. Y ou must fully charge the battery before usin g your device for the first time.
7 3. Plug the Charging Head into a standard AC po wer outlet. War ning ! While the device is charging, if t he touch screen does not function due to an unstable power supp ly , unplug the USB power adapter from the power outlet or unplug the USB cable from the device.
Getting Started 8 Setting Up Y our De vice When you turn on your device for the first time, i t displays a Welcome screen. Follow the prompts to set up fea tures and preferences on your device. Some screens can be skipped (touch Next ) or re-displayed (touch Ba ck ).
9 Holding the De vice Y our device’ s internal antenna is located alon g the top back of the device. Do not block the antenna; doing so may affect signal quality and may cause the device to opera te at a higher power level than is necess ary .

13 Navig ating Y our De vice Use command keys and the touch screen to na vigate. Command K eys Recent Apps T o display a list of recently used apps: To u c h Recent apps . T ouch an a pp to open it. T o close an app: Drag the app preview up or down.
Understanding Y our Device 14 Using the T ouch Screen Use only fingers to touch the screen. Caution! Do not allow the touch s creen to come into contact with other electrical devices . Electrostati c discharges can cause the touch screen to malfunction.
15 Rotating the Screen Many applica tions allow display in either portrait or landscape orientation. Rotating the device causes the display to automatica lly adjust to fit the new screen orienta tion. T o prevent t he display from ro tating automatically , open the Notification Panel and deselect Screen rotation .

19 Home Screen The main Home screen is the st arting point for many applications and functions and it contains items like application icons, shortcuts, folders, or Google widgets, which gives you instant access to informa tion and applications. This is the default pa ge and accessible from any menu by pressing Home .
Understanding Y our Device 20 Extended Home Screen The Home screen consists of th e Home panel plus additional panels that extend beyond the display width to provide more space for adding shor tcuts and widgets. Slide your finger horizontally across the scr een to scroll to the left or right side panels.
21 Use these controls to configure panels: 1. Remove : T ouch and drag a panel to the T rash Can to remove the panel from the Home s creen. 2. Default Home P age : T ouch the Home icon on a panel to set it as the default home screen. 3. Add : T ouch to add a new panel, up to a total of seven.
Understanding Y our Device 22 Notificati ons Notification icons appear on th e Status Bar at the top of the screen to report new messages, calendar events, device status, and more. 23 Status Bar The Status Bar at the top of the home screen provides device information (s uch as network status, signal strength, batter y charge, and time) on the right si de and notifi cation alerts on the left. T o display the Status Bar: From a Home screen, swipe downward fr om the top of the screen.
Understanding Y our Device 24 Other Ico ns Shor tcuts and Widgets Y ou can add, reposition, or remove short cuts and widgets from the Home screen. • Shortcuts : Icons on the Home screen that launch applications. • Widgets : Small applications tha t run on the Home screen.
25 Fo ld e r s Place folders on the Home screen to organize items. Adding Folders 1. From a Home screen, touch and hold on an empty area of the screen unti l the Home screen pop-up appears. 2. T ouch Folder . 3. Enter a name for the fol der and touch OK .
Understanding Y our Device 26 Apps Scr een The Apps screen displays all applica tions installed on your tablet. Applicatio ns that you download and install from Google Play or from the web are al so added to a Home screen. For mor e information, refer t o “Applications” on page 63.
27 T ask Manager Y our device can run applicat ions simultaneously and some applications run in the background. Use T ask Manag er to see which applica tions are running on your device and to end running applications t o extend battery life. Y ou can also uninstall ap plications from your device and see how much m emory is used by applica tions.
Understanding Y our Device 28 Entering T e xt Use the Samsung keyboard or the voice input fea ture to enter text. Note: T ext entry is not supported in some languages. T o enter text, you must change the i nput language to one of the supported languages.
29 Use handwriting gestures to perf orm actions, such as editing or deleting characters and inserting spaces. T o view the gesture guides, touch an d hold Options , an d then touch Settings ➔ Help ➔ Keyboard ➔ Using handwriting gestures . Accounts and Contac ts 30 Section 3: Accounts and Contacts This section explains how to ma nage accounts and contacts. Accounts Y our device can synchronize with a variety of accounts. With synchronization, in formation on your device is updated with any informa tion that changes in your accounts.
31 Y our Google Account In order to utilize your device to the fulles t extent, you will need to create a Google Account when you first use your device. With a Google Account, Google a pplications will always be in sync between your tablet and computer .

35 Impor ting and Expor ting Contacts T o back up and restore your cont acts, you can export your contacts list to a stora ge device (such as a PC), or import your contacts list from a storage device. 1. Use the USB cable to connect your de vice to the storage device.

Messaging 38 Section 4: Messaging This section describes ho w to send and receive messages and other features as sociated with messaging. Types of Messages Y our device suppor ts these types of messages: • Gmail • Email • Hangouts • Google+ Note: Y our Wi-Fi-only device does NOT support voice calling and messaging ser vices.
39 Composing and Sending Gmail 1. T ouch Gmail . 2. To u c h Compose , then touch fields to compose the message. Whi le composing a message, touch Menu for options. 3. T ouch SEND to send this message. – or – T ouch Menu ➔ Save draft to save a draft of this message.
Messaging 40 Note: T o configure email account settings at any time, use Menu ➔ Settings . T ouch the account to d isplay Account settings. Composing and Sending Email 1. T ouch Email . 2. If you have multiple accounts set up, ch oose an account from the menu at the top of the screen.
41 Deleting Email Accounts T o delete an Email account: 1. T ouch Email . 2. T ouch Menu ➔ Settings ➔ Delete account . Email Settings Use the Email Settings to configure your Email preferences. Note: Available settings depend on the email provider .
Multimedia 42 Section 5: Multime dia This section explains how to use the music features of your device including Google Play Music and Music Player . WatchON is also described. Listening to Music Y ou can listen to music using your device’ s built-in spea kers, through a wired headset, or t hrough a Bluetooth headset.
43 Music Player Use the Music application to l isten to music. T o access Music Player: From a Home screen, touch ➔ Mu sic . Note: Some file formats are not suppor ted depending on the software installed on th e device. Some files may not play properly depending on the encoding method used.
Multimedia 44 T o listen to songs a t equal volume levels: To u c h Menu ➔ Settings ➔ Player ➔ Smart volume . Caution! When Smart volume is activated, the volume may end up louder than the device volume level. Use caution to avoid long-ter m exposure to loud sound s to prevent damage to your hearing.
45 Watch ON Enjoy all of your fa vorite movies and TV shows with WatchON. Important! Before you use W a tchON, verify that you have an active Internet connection available . F or more informatio n, refer to “Wi-Fi” on page 56. Notes 1. Before beginning your initial W a tc hON application setup, make sure that yo ur TV is turned off.
Camera and Video 46 Section 6: Camera and Video Camera Use this application to take photos or videos. Use Gallery to view photos and videos taken with the device’ s camera. From a Home scr een, touc h ➔ Camera . Note: The camera automatically shuts off when unused.
47 Shooting Mode Several photo effects are available. Some mo des are not available when taking self-portraits. To u c h MODE , and then scroll up or down the screen at the right side of the screen. •A u t o : Use th is to allow the camera to evaluate the surroundings and determine the ideal mode for the photo.
Camera and Video 48 Panoramic Photos A panoramic photo is a wide landscape image consisting of multiple shots. 1. T ouch MODE ➔ Pan ora ma . 2. T ouch and move the camera in one direction. W hen the blue frame aligns with the viewfinder , the cam era automatically ta kes another shot in a panoramic sequence.
49 Zooming In and Out Use one o f the fo llowing me thods: Use the Vol um e button to zoom in or out. Spread two fingers apart on the screen to zoom in, and pinch to zoom out. Note: The zoom in and out effect is a vailable when using the zoom feature while shooting video .
Camera and Video 50 Video r ecorder : • Video size : Select a resolution. Use higher resolution for higher quality. Higher reso lution videos take up more memory .
51 Shor tcuts Reorganize shortcuts for easy access to the camera’s various options. 1. T ouch Options . 2. T ouch and hold a shortcut icon to display all shortc uts. 3. T ouch and hold an option and dr ag it to a s lot at the top of the screen. Note: The other icons can be mo ved within the list by touching and dragging them.
Camera and Video 52 T rimming Se gments of a Video 1. Select a video, and then touch Tr i m . 2. Move the start bracket to th e desired starti ng point, move the end bracket to the desired ending point, and then save the video.
53 Setting as Wallpaper When viewing an image, touch Menu ➔ Set as to set the image as wallpa per or to assign it to a contact. T a gging Faces 1. T ouch Menu ➔ Settings ➔ Ta g s ➔ Fac e ta g . A yellow frame appe ars around the recognized face.
Camera and Video 54 Playing Videos Select a video to play . Notes: Move forwards or backwa rd s by touching and dr agging the Prog ress Bar . Under the Progre ss Bar , the elapsed time displays to t he left and the total time to the right. Use the Rewind button to re start the current video or skip to the previous video.
55 Deleting Videos To u c h Menu ➔ Delete , select videos by ticking, and then touch De lete . Sharing Videos T ouch Menu ➔ Share via , select videos by ticking, touch Done , and then select a sharing method. Using Popup Video Play er Use this feature to use other applicat ions without c losing the video player .
Connections 56 Section 7: Connection s Y our device inc ludes fea t ures to connect to the internet and to other devices via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or a USB cable. W i-Fi Wi-Fi is a wireless networking technolog y that provides access to local area networks .
57 Add a Wi-Fi Network Manually 1. From a Home screen, touch ➔ Settings ➔ Connections tab ➔ Wi-Fi . 2. T ouch th e OFF/ON button to turn Wi-F i ON . 3. T ouch Add Wi-Fi Network (below the avai lable networks), then enter these fie lds: •N e t w o r k S S I D : Enter the name of the Wi-Fi network.
Connections 58 – Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep : Spec ify when to switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data for da ta communications when the device goes to sleep (when the backlight goes out). – Always allow scanning : Allow Google location service and other apps to scan for networks, even when Wi-Fi is turned off.
59 Connect to Wi-Fi Direct Devices 1. From a Home screen, touch ➔ Settings ➔ Connections tab ➔ Wi-Fi . 2. T ouch th e OFF/ON button to turn Wi-Fi ON . (Wi-Fi must be enabled to use Wi-Fi Direct.) 3. T ouch Wi-Fi Dir ect to turn Wi-Fi Direct on. 4.

Applications 64 Alar m Set alarms for reminders or for wake-up times. 1. T ouch Alarm . 2. T ouch Tu r n a l a r m o n to activate the alarm. A gray alarm means the alarm is deacti vated. 3. T ouch an alarm to change an y of its s ettings and then touch Save to save the updates.
65 T o clear the calculator history: To u c h Me nu ➔ Clear history . For more advanced problems, use the advanced operators sin , ln , cos , log , tan , and so on, just as you would on a pocket calculator . For more information, touch About Hancom V iewer ➔ Online Support . Hangouts Hangouts is an online place to meet fr iends and family , share photos, and host video calls.

75 Screen Saver When your tablet screen automa tically times out, instead of a blank screen, enable the Galaxy T ab 4 Screen Saver , which is actually an action-packed vid eo tour of all the fantastic features t hat you will find on your Galaxy T ab 4.
Applications 76 W or ld Cloc k Use this application to check the time of many major cities in the world. 1. T ouch Worl d Cl ock . A list of the locati ons you have added displays. T o add another ci ty to the list: 1. T ouch Add city to add another c ity to the list.
77 Section 9: Settings About Settings Use this applica tion to configure the device, set application options, and add accounts. Accessing Settings From a Home screen, touch ➔ Settings . – or – From any screen, touch the top of the screen and swipe do wnward, to display the Notification Panel, and then touch Settings .
Settings 78 Settings Screen Some options are enabled or disabled by touching the OFF/ON b utton to turn the option ON or OFF . For some options, you must touch the field, such as Wi -F i, to display and set more options. Some options are enabled or disabled by touching a check box.
79 Air plane Mode Airplane mode allows you to use many of your tablet’ s features, such as the camera, musi c and video apps, etc. when you are in an airplane or in any other area where accessing data netw orks is prohibited. Important! When your tablet is in Airplane mode, it cannot access online informa tion or applications .
Settings 80 Location Y our device only acquires your loca tion when you allow it. T o use location-based ser vices, you must first enable location ser vices on your device. 1. From a Home screen, touch ➔ Settings ➔ Connections tab ➔ Location . 2.
81 My Places Y ou can save your favorite locations for use with services that require loca tion information. This information ca n improve your search results and other location-rela ted activities. 1. From a Home screen, touch ➔ Settings ➔ Connections tab ➔ Location .
Settings 82 VPN The VPN settings menu allows you to set up and manage Virtual Private Netwo rks (VPNs). Adding a VPN Note: Y ou must set a screen lock PIN or password before setting u p a VPN. For more informa tion, refer to “Screen Security” on page 86.

Settings 90 Accessibility Accessibility ser vices are specia l features to make using the device easier for t hose with certain physical disabilities. Use the Accessibility settings to activa te these services. Note: Y ou can download accessibility applications from the Google Play and manage their use here.
91 Services • T alkBack : Activate the T alkBack feature, which speaks feedback aloud to help blind and low-vision u sers. Important! T alkBack can collect all of the text you enter , except passwords, inc ludi ng personal data and credit card numbers.
Settings 92 • Samsung subtitles (CC) : Use Samsung subtitles with multimed ia files when avai lable. T ouch the OFF/ON button to turn the feature ON . T ouch Samsung subtitles (CC) for options. Dexterity • Assistant menu : Improve the device accessibility for users with reduced dexterity .
