Getting Started 6 T ext Con v entions This manual provides condensed informa tion about how to use your device. T o make this possible, the follo wing text conventions are used to represent often-used s teps: Batter y Y our device is power ed by a rechargeable, standard Li-Ion battery .
7 Note: The battery comes partially charged. Y ou must fully charge the battery before using your device for the first time. After the firs t charge , you can use t he device while cha rging. 1. Insert the USB cable int o the device’ s Charger/ Accessory Port.

Getting Started 10 Memor y Car d Y our device supports removable microSD or micr oSDHC memory cards with ma ximum capacities of 64 GB (depending on the memory ca rd manufacturer and type). Memory cards are used to s tore music, photos, videos, and other files.
11 Locking the De vice Manually Press the Pow er/Lock Key . Unlocking the De vice 1. Press the Power/Lock Key . The Lock screen displays. 2. Swipe across the screen as shown. This is the default Swipe screen lock and offers no security . Holding the De vice Y our device’ s internal antenna is located a long the top back of the device.

Understanding Y our Device 14 Home Screen The Home screen is the starting point for using your device. I t consists of: • Status Bar : The Status Bar di splays no tifications on the left side and status indicators on the right side. Note : The Status Bar is sometimes hidden.
15 Additional Home Screens The Home screen has two different kinds of pane ls. The Standard panels display shortcut s to applications and widgets and the Magazine panels can host Home Scre en Apps, whic h are built-in apps that r un on the Home screen.
Understanding Y our Device 16 T o resize a Home Screen App: 1. T ouch and hold a Home Screen App until a gold box appears a round it. 2. Drag a side of the box to resize it. The other Home Screen Apps automa tically adjust to accommodate the resize d window.
17 Add or remove Hom e Screen Apps: Home Screen Apps curr ently in use on the active page display a check mark. To u c h a Home Screen App to add it to the acti ve page.

19 Finger Gestures T ouching T o open an application, to select a menu item, to press an onscreen button, or to enter a character using the onscreen keyboard, touch it with a finger . T ouching and Holding T ouch and hold an it em for more than 2 seconds to access available options.
Understanding Y our Device 20 Dragging T o move an icon, thumbnail, or preview to a new location, touch and hold it and drag it to the target position . Double-T a pping Double-tap on a web page, map, or imag e to zoom in a part. Double- tap again to z oom out aga in.
21 Swipe Swipe left or right on the Hom e screen or the Applications screen to see another panel. Swipe up or do wn to scroll through a web page or a list, such as contacts. Pinching and Spreading Spread two fingers a part on a web page, map, or ima ge to zoom in.
Understanding Y our Device 22 Note: Excessive shaking or impact to th e device may result in unintended inputs. Control motions p roperly . Rota ting the Screen Many appl ications allow display in either po rtrait or landscape orientation. Rotating the device causes the display to automatically adjust to fit the new screen orienta tion.
23 Panning to Browse When an image is zoomed in, touch and hold a point on the screen, and then move the device in any direction to browse the image. Palm Motions Use palm motions to control the device by t ouching the screen. Before using motions, make sure the palm motion feature is activated.
Understanding Y our Device 24 Cove r ing Cover the screen with a palm to pause media playback. Capturing Screenshots Press and hold the Po wer/Lock Key and Home to capture and save an ima ge of the current screen. Note: A copy of the screenshot is automat ically saved to the clipboard.

27 Configuring Apps T o remove an app from the panel : T ouch and drag it off of the panel and place it in the storage area. T o add an app to the panel: T ouch and drag it from the stora ge area to the panel. T o relocate an app: T ouch and drag it to a new location.
Understanding Y our Device 28 Accessing Additional P anel Functions In addition to n otifications, the Not ification Panel also provides quick and ready access to se parate device functions. These can be quickly activated or deactivated by toggling them on or off.

Accounts and Contac ts 38 Section 3: Accounts and Contacts This section explains how to ma nage accounts and contacts. Accounts Y our device can synchronize with a variety of ac counts. With synchronization, in formation on your device is updated with any informa tion that changes in your accounts.
39 Y our Google Account In order to utilize your device to the fulles t extent, you will need to create a Google Account when you first use your device. With a Google Account, Google a pplications will always be in sync between your tablet and computer .

T ouch the Groups tab, Fav ori tes tab, or Contacts tab to view contacts in various ways: •G r o u p s : Display contacts sorted into groups —such as Not assigned, Co-workers, Family , Friends, etc.

43 Impor ting and Exporting Contacts T o back up and restore your cont acts, you can export your contacts list to a stora ge device (such as a PC), or import your contacts list from a storage device. 1. Use the USB cable to connect your de vice to the storage device.

Types of Messages Y our device supports th ese types of messages: • Email • Gmail • Hangou ts • Google+ • T witter Note: Y our Wi-Fi-only device does NOT support voice calling and messaging ser vices.
47 Composing and Sending Gmail 1. T ouch Gmail . 2. To u c h Compose , then touch fields to compose the message. Whi le composing a message, touch Menu for options. 3. T ouch SEND to send this messa ge. – or – T ouch Menu ➔ Save draft to save a draft of this message.
Messaging 48 Note: For Exchange ActiveSyn c accounts, the Activate device administrator? screen may a ppear . Read the info rmation and touch Activa te to continue. 5. Enter an accoun t name and your name, if requ ired. 6. T ouch Done . The device communicates with the a ppropriate server to set up your account and synchronize your email.
49 Email Se ttings Use the Email Settings to configure your Email preferences. Note: Available settings depend on the email provider . 1. T ouch Email . 2. To u c h Menu ➔ Settings , then touch General settings . The following options display: •D i s p l a y : Set how email is show n in the email list and whe n you open th em.
Messaging 50 Hangouts Previously know n as Google T a lk, Hangouts is an online place to meet friends and family , share photos, and host video calls. Conversation logs are auto matically saved to a Chats area in your Gmail account. Fro m a Home s creen, touch ➔ Google folder ➔ Hangouts .

Multimedia 52 Music Player Use the Music applica tion to listen to music. T o access Music Play er: Fro m a Home s creen, touch ➔ Music . Note: Some file format s are not supported dependin g on the softwar e insta lled on the device. Some fil es may n ot play properly depending on the encoding method used.
53 T o listen to songs at equal volume levels: To u c h Menu ➔ Settings ➔ Player ➔ Smart volume . Caution! When Smart volume is activated, the vo lume may end up louder than the device volume level. Use caution to avoid long-term exposure to loud sounds to prevent damage to your hearing.
Multimedia 54 Playing Music b y Mood Play music grouped by mood. The playlist is automa tically created by the device. To u c h Menu ➔ Music square and sel ect a ce ll of mood. – or – Select multiple cells by dra gging your finger across multiple cells.
55 Watch ON Enjoy all of your fa vorite movies and TV shows with WatchON. Important! Before you use WatchON, verify that you have an active Internet connection a vailable. For more information, refer to “Wi-Fi” on page 70. Notes 1. Before beginning your initial W a tchON application setup, make sure that yo ur TV is turned off.
Camera and Video 56 Section 6: Camera and Video Camera Use this application to take photos or videos. Use Gallery to view photos and videos taken w ith the device’ s camera. Fro m a Home s creen, touch ➔ Camera . Note: The camera automatically shuts off when unused.

Camera and Video 60 R ecording Mode To u c h Options ➔ Recording mode to change the recording mode. •N o r m a l : Use this mode for norm al quality . • Limit for email : Use this mode to lower quality for sending via messages. • Fast motion : Use this mode when recording action scene s.
61 Note: Y ou can record vid eos in dual camera mode for up to 5 minutes in Full HD and up to 10 minutes in HD . While taking videos in this mode, sound is recorded by the internal microphone. Share Shot To u c h Options ➔ and select one of the following: •S h a r e s h o t : Send a photo directly to anothe r device via Wi-Fi Direct.

Move the start bracket to the desired starting point, move the end bracket to the desir ed ending point, and then save the video.
Camera and Video 66 Modifying Images While viewing an image, touch Menu ➔ Edit and use the following f unctions: •R o t a t e : Rotate the image. •C r o p : Crop the image. •C o l o r : Adjust the saturation or brightne ss of the image. • Effect : Apply effects to the image.
67 T agging Faces 1. T ouch Menu ➔ Settings ➔ Ta g s ➔ Fac e ta g . A yellow frame appe ars around the recognized face. 2. T ouch the face, touch Add name , and then select or add a contact. 3. When the face tag appears on an image, to uch the face tag and use availa ble options, such as sending messages.

Connections 70 Section 7: Connection s Y our device inc ludes fea tur es to connect to the internet and to other devices by using Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or a USB cable. W i-Fi Wi-Fi is a wireless networking technolog y that provides access to local area networks .
71 Scan and Connect to a Wi-Fi Netw or k When you turn on Wi-Fi, yo ur device searches for and displays available Wi-Fi connections. 1. From any screen, touch the top of the screen and swipe downward. The N otification Panel displays. 2. T ouch Wi-Fi to turn Wi-F i ON (green).
Connections 72 Wi-Fi Settings The Wi-Fi settings menu allows you t o set up many of your device’ s a dvanced Wi-F i services. 1. From a Home screen, touch ➔ Setting s ➔ Connections tab ➔ Wi-Fi . 2. T ouch the OFF / ON button to turn Wi -Fi ON .
73 W i-Fi Direct Wi-Fi Direct allows device-to-device connect ions so you can transfer large amounts of data over a Wi-F i connection. These devices must be enabled for Wi-Fi Direct communication. This connection i s direct and not via a hot spot or Wireless Access Point (WAP).
Connections 74 Bluetooth Bluetooth is a short-range w ireless communications technolog y for exchanging info rmation over a distance of about 30 feet. Y ou do not need to line up the devices to send information with Bluetooth. If the devices are in r ange, you can exchange information between them — even if they are in different rooms.
75 Pairing w ith a Bluetooth De vice T o exchange information betw een you r device and another bluetooth-enabled device, yo u first must pair them. Tip : After pairing, yo ur device and the target devic e recognize each other and exchange info rma tion without havi ng to enter a passcode or PIN.
Connections 76 R econnect to a Bluetooth De vice When you ha ve paired your ta blet with another device, you should be able to reconnect it automa tically by turning on Bluetooth on your tablet. 1. From a Home screen, touch ➔ Setting s ➔ Connections tab ➔ Bluetooth .
77 Send Information Using Bluetooth Y ou can use Bluetooth to transfer information between yo ur tablet and another Bluetooth-enab led device such as a tablet or notebook computer . The first time you transfer information between your table and another device, you need to enter or confirm a security passcode.
Connections 78 R eceiv e Data Using Bluetooth Y our tablet is capable of receiving a wide variety of file types with Bluetooth , inc l uding phot os, audio files, and documents such as PD Fs. Note: Y our tablet must already be paired to the target device in order to share files.

81 Samsung Kies Samsung Kies is a software that enables you to update your device firmware, synchronize files, and transfer data to and from your devic e directly by connecting to your computer . T o learn more about Samsung Kies and to download the software (PC and Mac), visit samsung.
