Section 1: Getting Star ted This section hel ps you to quickly start usin g your device. Understanding T his User Manual The sections of this manual gene rally follow the featur es of your device.
T ext Conv ent i ons This manual provides condensed informa tion about how to use your device. T o make this possible, the follo wing text conventions are used to represent often-used s teps: Arrows are used to represent the sequence o f selecting successive options in longer , or repetitive, procedures.
Charging the Batter y Y our device comes with a Wall/USB Charger (Charging Head, and USB cable) to charge your device from any standard AC power outlet . Note: The battery comes partially charged. Y ou must fully charge the battery before using your device for the first time.
Note: Y ou cannot charge the batt er y using the USB cable and your PC. Note: If the battery is complet ely discharged, allow it to charge for a few minutes before you try to turn on the d evice. T ur ning Y our Device On and O ff T ur ning Y our De vice On Press and hold the Power/Lock Key .
Memor y Car d Y our device supports removable microSD o r microSDHC memory card s with m aximu m capacit ies of 6 4 GB (depending on the memory card manufacturer and ty pe). Memory cards are used to store music, photos, videos, a nd other files. Installing a Memor y Car d 1.

Light Sensor : Controls screen brightness automatic ally when taking photo s with the front-facing Camera. 2. Front-Facing Camera Lens : T ake self-portraits and record videos.
Back, T op, and Bottom The following items can be fo und on the back, top, and bottom of your device as illustra ted. 1. Flash : Provides ade q uate light when taking pictures in dark places. 2. Camera Lens : Used when taking photos or recording videos.
Home Screen The Home screen is the sta rting point for using your device. It consists of: • Status Bar : The Status Bar displays notifica tions on the left side and stat us indicators on t he right side. Notifications Widgets Refresh content Status Bar Stat us indicators Note : The Status Bar is normally hidden.
Additional Home Screens T o modify a H ome Screen: 1. From a Home screen, touch and hold on a Home Screen App until the Edit screen di splays . The Home screen consists of the a main Home screen and up to 6 additional screens.
T o resize a window: 1. T ouch and hold a Home Screen App until it “releases” from the page. A gold box appears ar ound the window . 2. Dra g a side of the window to resize it. The other Home Screen Apps will autom atically adjust to accommodate the resized window .
T o uch and hold, and then drag a page to a new location. on a Home screen to set it as the new main Home scre en ( ) T o prevent the dis play from rotating au tomatically , op en the Notification Panel and deselec t Screen rotation . Note: Some applicat ions do not allow screen rotati on.
Naviga ting Y our Device Use command keys and the touch s creen to navigate. Command K eys Recent Apps T o display a list of recently us ed apps: To u c h Recent apps . T ouch an app to open it. T o close an app: Drag the app preview up or down.
Finger Gestures T ouching and Holding T ouch and hold an it em for more than 2 seconds to access available options. T ouching T o open an application, to select a menu item, to press an onscreen button, or to enter a character using the onscreen keyboard, touch it with a finger .
Dragging Double-T a pping T o move an icon, thumbnail, or preview to a new loca tion, Double-tap on a web page, map, or image to zoom in a part. touch and hold it and drag it to the target position .
Swipe Pinching and Spreading Swipe left or right on the Home scree n or the Applications screen to see another panel. Swipe up or do wn to scroll through a web page or a list, such as contacts. Spread two fingers a part on a web page, map, or ima ge to zoom in.
Contro l Motio ns Simple motions allo w easy control of the device. Before using motions, make sure the motion fea ture is activated. 1. From a Home screen, touch Apps Settings Controls tab Motions . 2. T ouch the OFF/ ON button to turn the feature ON .
23 SP e n The S Pen is a stylus that assists yo u in performing different functions. By u sing the P en but ton, you can minimize having to switch between touch and pen in put. S Pen but ton : Perform advanced S P en actions. S Pen tip : Perform basic S P en actions.
Capturing Scr eenshots With the S Pe n button pressed, touch the screen until you hear a c lick. It is possible to draw or write on or to crop a screenshot. The edited image is sa ved in the Gallery Screenshots folder . It is not possible to capt ure a screenshot while using some applica tions.
Selecting and Capturing an Ima ge With the S Pen bu tton pressed, draw a line around an area to select it. If necessar y , use one of the following options: Restore the original selection. Convert the selection to circular sha pe. Convert the selection to rectangular sh ape.
Some items have contextual menus tha t make the S P en pointer glow . Press the S Pe n button to display the menu while hovering the S Pen over the item. Air View Use this feature to perform various functions whi le the S Pen is hovering over the screen.
R e placing the S P en Tip While using the S Pen, the S Pen tip may get dull. If the tip is dull, replace it with a new one. 1. Hold the tip w ith the tweezer firmly , and then pull it out. 2. Insert a new tip into the S Pen until you hear a click. Multi W indo w Multi task by using up to four applica tions at the same time.

Notificati ons Notification icons appear on th e Status Bar at the top of the screen to report calendar even ts, device st atus, and more. For details about these notifications, open the Notification Pan el. Notification Pa nel T o view the Notific ation Panel: 1.
• T ouch Brightness and volume to create a check mark if you want to be able to adjust the scree n brightness and volum e from the Notification Panel. • T ouch Back to exit the Notification Panel. 4. T ouch to display only your primary funct ions.

Note: Y ou can also set the wa llpaper in Settings. F rom a Home screen , touch Apps Settings Device tab Wallpaper . F older s Place folders on the Home screen to organize items. Adding Folders 1. From a Home screen, touch and hold o n an empty area of the screen until the Home screen pop-up appears .
Apps Scr een The Apps screen displays all applica tions installed on your tablet. Applica tions that you download and install from Google Play or from the web are also added to a Home screen. The Apps icons can be arranged in various ways. T o change the arrangement of the Apps icons: 1.

T ask Manager Y our device can run applicatio ns simultaneously and some applications run in the background . Use T ask Manager to see which applications are running on your devic e and to end running a ppl ications to extend battery life. Y ou can also uninstall applic ations from your device and see how much memor y is used by applications.
Entering T ext Use the Samsung keyboard or the voice input featu re to enter text. Note: T ext ent ry is not supported in some languages. T o enter text, you must change the in put language to one of the supported languages.
Direct Pen Input 1. From a Home screen, touch Apps Settings Controls tab S P e n Direct pen input . 2. T ouch the OFF/ ON button to turn the feature ON . 3. When hovering the S Pen over a text field, the icon appears at the upper left corner of the text field.
Section 3: Accounts and Conta cts This section expl ains how to mana ge accounts and conta cts. Accounts Y our device can synchroniz e with a variety of accounts. With synchronization, information on your device is updated with any information that changes in your accounts.
Y our Google Account In order to utilize your device to t he fullest extent, you will need to create a Google Account when you f irst use your device. With a Google Account, Google a pplications will always be in sync between you r tablet and computer .
3. T ouch each field to enter in formation. T ouch to add another entry, or to r emove an entry . T ouch to choose a label. •P i c t u r e : T ouch the picture icon to assig n a picture to the new contact. •N a m e : Enter the name. T ouch to display additional name fields.
Contacts Display Options There are various ways to display your co ntacts. 1. T ouch Contacts . 2. T ouch the Groups tab, Fav ori te s tab, or Contacts tab to view contacts in various ways: • Groups : Display contacts sorted into grou ps — such a s Not assigned, Co-worke rs, Family , Friends, etc.
Separating Contacts 1. T ouch Contacts . 2. T ouch a contact in t he Contacts list to display it. 3. T ouch Menu Se parate contact. A list of linked contacts is displayed.
Groups Assign contacts to Groups, such as co-workers, family , or friends, to make searching for contacts faster or to quickly send an email to group members . Create a New Group Create a new group when you add or edit a conta c t. 1. T ouch Contacts Groups tab.
R enaming a Gr oup 1. T ouch Contacts Groups tab. 2. T ouch the group you want to rename. 3. T ouch Menu Edit . 4. T ouch the Group name field and enter a new name. 5. T ouch Save . Deleting Groups 1. T ouch Contacts Groups tab Menu Delete groups .
Re move Favo r it e s 1. T ouch Contacts Fav ori tes tab. 2. T ouch Menu Remove from F avorites . 3. T ouch individual contacts or touch Select all , then touch Done to remove. Note: T o re move the currently di splayed contact from your favorites list, touch the Star next to the contact’ s name so that it is no longer gold .
Section 4: Messaging This section describes how t o send and receive messages and other features associated with messaging. Types of Messages Y our device supports these types of messag es: • Email • Gmail • Hangouts • Google+ • Tw i t t e r Note: Y our Wi-Fi-only device does NOT support voice calling and messaging ser vices.
Note: For Exchange ActiveSync accounts, the Activa te device administrator? screen may a ppear . Read the info rmation and touch Activate to continue. 5. Enter an accoun t name and your name, if requ ired. 6. T ouch Done . The device communicates with the a ppropriate server to set up your account and synchronize your email.
Email Se ttings Use the Email Settings to configure your Email preferences. Note: Available settings depend on the email provider . 1. T ouch Email . 2. T ouch Menu Setting s , then touch General settings . The following options display: •D i s p l a y : Set how email is show n in the email list and whe n you open th em.
R eply in g to an Email Gmail 1. T ouch Email . Send and receive email with Gmail, Google’s web-based 2. Open an email that you have received. email service. 3. T ouch Reply to reply to the sender of the email. From a Home screen, touch Apps Forw ar ding an E mail Google folder Gmail .
Composing and Sending Gmail 1. T ouch Gmail . 2. To u c h Compose , then touch fields to compos e the message. Whi le composing a message, touch Menu for options. 3. T ouch SEND to send this message. – or – T ouch Menu Save draft to sa ve a draft of this message.
Twitte r Get real-time stories, pict ures, videos, conversations , ideas, and inspiration all in your time line. Follow people and your interests to get unfilter ed access and unique behind-the- scenes perspect ives. Express yo urself with photos, videos and comments.
Section 5: Multimedia This section explains how to us e the music features of your device including th e Music app and the Music Player . Flipboard, SketchBook for Galaxy , and WatchON are also described. Listening to Music Y ou can listen to music using your device’ s built-in speakers, through a wired headset, or th rough a Bluetooth headset .
Music Player Use the Music applica tion to listen to music. T o access Music Player: 1. From a Home screen, touch Apps Music . The Music Player applicatio n searches your device’ s internal storage or on an ins talled memory card for music and playlists.
t h e – Music auto off : Set the op tion Off or set your music to turn off automatically by touching one of the time values. – Ly ri c s : Display the lyrics of the song, if available. – Smart volume : Automatically adjust volume to surroundings.
Adding Songs t o a Playlist 1. T ouch the Playlists tab and, under My playlists , touch a playlist. T ouch Add tracks . – or – T ouch the Tr a c k s tab and touch Menu Add to playlist . 2. T ouch each song you want to add or touch Se lect all , and then touch Done .
Deleting a Playlist 1. T ouch the Playlists tab. 2. T ouch Menu Delete . 3. T ouch each playlist you want to remove or touch Select all . 4. T ouch Don e . Playing Music 1. To u c h Music . 2. T ouch a song or touch an album or genre and then touch a song in the list of songs on the album.
Music Play er Contr ols When a song is playing, the Mu sic Player screen displays and various controls are a vailable. 1. To uch Music . 2. 3. T ouch the song thumbnail to enlarge th e music pl ayer . During playback, the f ollow ing controls are available: Scan for DLNA-enabled devices.
Start the song after pausing. T ouch and hold to f ast-forward the song. T ouch to go to next song. Shuffles the current list of s ongs randomly . Songs play in order and are not shuffled. Plays the entire song list once. Replays the current list when the list ends.
Playing Music b y Mood Play music grouped by mood. The playlist is automa tically created by the device. To u c h Music Menu Music squar e and select a cell of mood. – or – Select multiple cells by dra gging your finger across multiple cells.
Sk etchBook for Galaxy Use this applica tion to create a quick concept or sketch out your idea for a project. Note: The SketchBook app must be installed before you can use it. T ouch OK on the pop-up and follow the onscreen instruct ions. 1. From a Home screen, touch Apps Samsung folder SketchBook for Galaxy .
WatchO N Enjoy all of your favorite movies and TV shows with WatchON. Important! Before you use WatchON, verify that you ha ve an active Internet connec tion available. For more informat ion , refer to “Wi- Fi” on page 78. • Before beginning your initial WatchON application setup, make sure that your TV is turned off.
Section 6: Camera and Video Camera Use this applica tion to take photos or videos. Use Gallery to view photos and videos taken with the device’ s camera. From a Home screen, touch Apps Camera . Note: The camera automatically shuts off when unused.

To u c h MODE , and then scroll up or down the screen at the right side of the screen. •A u t o : Allow the camera to evaluate the surroundings and determine the ideal m ode for the photo.
• Sound & shot : T ake a photo with sound. – T ouch to take a photo. The device records a few seconds of audio a fter taking a photo. •D r a m a : T ake a series of photos and combine t hem to create an image that shows trails of the movement.
•P a n o r a m a : T ake a photo composed of many photos strung together . T o get the best shot, follow these tips: – Move the camera slowly in one direction. – Keep the camera’ s viewfinde r within the guide frame. – Avoid taking photos of a subject in front of unrecognizable backgrounds, such as empty skies or plain walls.
R ecor ding Mode To u c h Options Recording mode to change the recording mode. •N o r m a l : Use this mode for normal quality . • Limit for email : Use this mode to lower quality for sending vi a messages. •F a s t m o t i o n : Use this mode when rec ording action scenes.
Share Shot To u c h Options , and se lect one of the following: •S h a r e s h o t : Send a photo directly to an other device via Wi-Fi Dir ect. • Buddy photo share : Set the device to recognize a person’ s face that you ha ve tagged in a photo and send it to that person.
•I S O : Select an ISO value. This controls cam era light sensitivity . It is measured in film-camera equivalents. Low values are for stationary or brightly-lit objects. Higher values are for fast-mov ing or poorly-lit objec ts. • Smart stabilization : Activate or deactivate anti- shake.
• V oice control : Set the camera to take photos with voice commands. • Contextual filename : Set the camera to display contextual tags. Activ ate this to use T ag Buddy in Gallery . • Save as flipped : Invert the image to create a mirror - image of the original sc ene.
Zooming In and Out Use one o f the fo llowing m eth ods to zoom in or out on an image: Double-tap anywhere o n the screen to zoom in or zoom out. Spread two fingers apart on an y place to zoom in. Pinch the screen to zoom out. Viewing Images Using the Motion F eature Use the motion featur e to execut e a function with particular motion.
• Copy to c lipboard : Copy to clipboard. •P r i n t : Print the image via a USB or Wi-Fi connection. Some printers may not be co mp atible with the device. •R e n a m e : Rename the file. • Buddy photo share : Send the image to a person whose face is tagged in the image.
Setting as W allpaper When viewing an image, touch Menu Set as to set the image as wallpa per or to assign it to a contact. T a gging F aces 1. T ouch Menu Setting s Ta g s Face tag . A yellow frame appe ars around the recognized face.
5. T ouch to display the volume control, and th en touch and drag on the scale to set volume. Y ou can also press the Volume Key on the side of the device to adjust playback volume. 6. Display the volume control (5) and touch this icon to access Sou ndAlive s ettings.
Y ouT ube Use this applica tion to watch videos from the Y ouT ube website. From a Home screen, touch Y ouT ube . Wa t c hing Videos 1. T ouch , and then enter a keyword. 2. Select one of the retur ned search results to watch a video. 3. Rotate the device to landsca pe orientation to display full screen.
Section 7: Connection s Y our device inc ludes fea tur es to connect to the internet and to other devices by using Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or a USB cable. W i-Fi Wi-Fi is a wireless networking technolog y that provides access to local area networks .
Scan and Connect to a Wi-Fi Netw or k When you turn on Wi-Fi, yo ur device searches for and displays available Wi-Fi connections. 1. From any screen, touch the top of the screen and swipe downward. The N otification Panel displays. 2. T ouch Wi-Fi to turn Wi-F i ON (green).
Wi-Fi Status Indicators The following icons sho w your current Wi-Fi connection stat us at a gla nce: Displays when Wi-Fi is connected, active, and communicating with a Wire less Access P oint (WAP). Displays when there is a Wi-Fi access point available but you are not connecte d to it.
– MAC address : View you r device’ s MAC address, which is required when connecting to some secured networks (not configurable). – IP address : View your device’ s IP address (not configur able). • WPS push button : Set up a connec tion to a WPS (Wi- Fi Protected Setup) router or other equipment.
Share I nf or mation with W i-Fi Direct T o share videos, photos, or other informa tion with the connected device, follow these steps: 1. View the information that you want to share. F or example, if you want to shar e a photo, find the photo in your camera viewer or touch My Files folder , then touch the Share, Share via, or Send via option.
Pairing w ith a Bluetooth De vice T o exchange information betw een you r device and another bluetooth-enabled device, yo u first must pair them. Tip : After pairing, your de vice a nd the target device recognize each other and exchange info rma tion without havi ng to enter a passcode or PIN.
R econnect to a Bluetooth De vice When you hav e paired your ta blet with another device, you should be able to reconnect it automat ically by turning on Bluetooth on your tablet. 1. From a Home screen, touch Apps Settings Connections tab Bluetooth .
Send Information Using Bluetooth Y ou can use Bluetooth to transfer information between yo ur tablet and another Bluetooth-enab led device such as a tablet or notebook computer . The first time you transfer information between your table and another device, you need to enter or confirm a security passcode .
R eceiv e Data Using Bluetooth Y our tablet is capable of receiving a wide variety of file types with Bluetooth , inc l uding phot os, audio files, and documents such as PD Fs. Note: Y our ta blet must already be paired to the target device in order to share files.
Bluetooth Settings 1. From a Home screen, touch Apps Settings Connections tab Bluetooth . 2. T ouch th e OFF/ ON button to turn Bluetooth ON . 3. T ouch Menu for options: • Visibility timeout : Set the length of time your tablet is visible to other devices when you turn on visibility .
Uninstalling an A pp Apps come pre-installed on your device and you can download additional apps fr om Google Play . If you decide to, you can uninstall a pps you downloaded from Google Play and other sources. There are several ways to uninsta ll an app: 1.
Samsung Kies Samsung Kies is a software that enables you to update your device firmware, synchronize files, and transfer data to and from your devic e directly by connecting to your computer . T o learn more about Samsung Kies and to do wnload the software (PC and Mac), visit samsung.

Application F older s There are se veral appli cations th at are grouped into different folders. The applications in this secti on are described alphabetically .
Alar m Set alarms for reminders or for wake-up times. 1. T ouch Samsung folder Alarm . 2. T ouch Tu r n a l a r m o n to activate the alarm. A gray alarm means the alarm is deacti vated. 3. T ouch an alarm to change an y of its settings and then touch Save to save the updates.
Calcula tor The Calculator provides basic and advanced arithmetic functions. 1. T ouch T ools folder Calculator . 2. Enter the first n umber using the numeric keys . 3. Enter the operatio n for your calculation by touchin g the corresponding onscreen ar ithmetic function key .

Chrome Use Chrome to brow se the intern et and br ing your open tabs, bookmarks and omnibox data from your computer to your tablet. To u c h Googl e folder Chrome . Store contact i nformation for your fr iends, family , and colleagues, to quickly access infor mation or to se nd a message.
Dropbox Use this application to s ave and share files with others via the Dropbox cloud storage. When you save files to D ropbox, your devic e automatically sync s with the web server and any other computers that have Dropbox in stalled. 1. T ouch Dropbox .
Gmail Send and receive email with Gmail, Google’s web-based email. To u c h Goo gle folder Gmail . For more informati on, refer to “Email” on page 49. Google Use this applica tion to search no t only the Internet, but also applications and their contents on the device as well.
Google folder Hangouts Hangouts is an online place to meet friends and family , share photos, and host video calls. To u c h Hangou ts . For mor e information, refe r to “Hangouts” on page 53.
