Getting Started 2.2 2 Re mo ve the packing tape from the front, back, and sides of the machine. Selecting a Location Select a lev e l, stable place with adequate space for air circulation. Al low extra space for opening doors and trays. The area should be well-ventilated and away from direct sunlight or sources of heat, co ld, and humidity .
Getting Started 2.3 2 Remove the toner cartrid ge from its bag and r emove the paper protecting the cartridge b y pulling the packing tape. 3 Gently roll the cartridge 5 or 6 times to distribute the toner . Thoroughly ro lling the ca rtrid ge will assure maximum copies per cartridge .

Getting Started 2.9 Setting the Machine ID (Only for SCX-4521F/ SCX-4521FR) In some countries, you are required by law to indicate your fax number on any fax y ou send. The Machine ID , containing your telephone number and name (o r company name), wil l be printed at the top of each page sent from y our machine.
Getting Started 2.10 Setting the Date and Time (Only for SCX-4521F/ SCX-4521FR) When you turn y our machine on for the first time, the display prompts you to e nter the current date and time. After ente ring, it will not appear an ymore. N OTE : When turning on the machin e after turning it off for a long time, you need to reset date and time .

Paper Handling 3.2 Guidelines for Paper and Special Materials When selecting or loa ding paper , env elopes, or other spe c ial material, kee p these g u ide lines in mind: • Always use paper and other materials that conform with the specifications listed under “P aper Specifications” on page 10.
Paper Handling 3.3 Loading Paper Proper pa per loadi ng helps pre vent paper ja ms and ensur e trouble-free printing. Do not remo ve the paper in the tray while a job is pr inting. Do ing so may cause a pape r jam. See “ Paper T ype , Input Source s, and Capaci ties” on page 3.

Copying 4.2 Making Copies on the Document Glass 1 Lift and open the document cover . 2 Place the document face down on the document glass and align it at the top left corner of the gla ss. N OTE : Make sure that no do cuments are in the ADF (Automatic Document F eeder).
Copying 4.3 3 Customize the copy settings including number of copie s, copy size, darkness, and origin al type, by using the control panel buttons. See “Setting Copy Options” on page 4.3. T o clear the settings, use the Stop/Clear button. 4 If necessary , you can use special copy features, such as Collate and 2 or 4 Up copying.
Copying 4.4 Using Special Copy Features Y o u can use the following copy features: • Off : Prints in normal mode. • Clone : Prints multiple imag e copies from the original document on a single page. The number of images is automatically determined by the original image and paper size.
Copying 4.5 5 If necessary , customize the copy settings, including number of copies, darkness, and original t y pe, b y using the control panel bu ttons. See “Setting Copy Options” on page 4.3. N OTE : Y o u cannot adjust the copy size using the Reduce/ Enlarge button while Auto Fit copying is enabled.
Copying 4.6 Changing the Default Settings The copy options, including dark ness, original type, copy size and number of copie s, can b e set to the most frequently used modes. When yo u copy a docu ment, the de fault settings are used unless they are changed by using the corresponding buttons on the control panel.

Faxing (Only for SCX-4521F/ SCX-4521FR) 7.4 Adjusting the Document Resolution The default document settings produce good results wh en using typical text-based documents. However , if you send documents that ar e of a p o or quality , or contain photographs, y ou can adju st the resolution to p roduce a higher quality fax.

Faxing (Only for SCX-4521F/ SCX-4521FR) 7.6 Receiving a Fax About Receiving Modes •I n Fax mode, the machine answers an incoming fax call and immediately goes into the fax reception mode .
Faxing (Only for SCX-4521F/ SCX-4521FR) 7.7 Receiving Manually Using an Extension Telephone This features works best when you are using an extension telephone connected to the EXT . jack on the back of your machine. Y ou can receive a fax from some one you are talking to on the extension telephone without going to the fax machi ne.
Faxing (Only for SCX-4521F/ SCX-4521FR) 7.8 Automatic Dialing Speed Dialing Y o u can store up to 100 frequent ly dialed numbers in o ne o r two-digit speed dial locati ons (0-99). Storing a Number for Speed Dialing 1 Press Phone Book on the control panel.
Faxing (Only for SCX-4521F/ SCX-4521FR) 7.9 9 Press the Upper Level button when you have entered all of the desired numbers. Faxing (Only for SCX-4521F/ SCX-4521FR) 7.10 Searching with a Part icular First Letter 1 Press Phone Book . 2 Press Enter when “Search&Dial” appe ar s on the d isplay . 3 Press the button labeled with the letter you w ant to search for . A name beginning wi th the letter displays.
Faxing (Only for SCX-4521F/ SCX-4521FR) 7.11 Sending a Delayed Fax Y o u can set your machine to send a fax at a later time when y ou will not be present. 1 Load the document(s) fa ce up into the ADF . OR Place a single document face down on the document glass.
Faxing (Only for SCX-4521F/ SCX-4521FR) 7.12 8 Press Enter . The document is scanne d into memory bef ore transmission. The display show s memory capacity and the number of pages being stored in memory . For a document placed o n the document glass, the display asks if you want to load another page.
Faxing (Only for SCX-4521F/ SCX-4521FR) 7.13 Additional Features Using Secure Receiving Mode Y ou may need to prevent your receiv ed faxes from being accessed by unauthorized people . Y ou can turn on Secure R eceiving mode to restrict printi ng of received fax es when the machine is unattended.
Faxing (Only for SCX-4521F/ SCX-4521FR) 7.14 Power Failure Report This report is printed out automatically when power is restored after a power fai lure, if any da ta loss occurs due to the power failure. N OTE : The lists you hav e set to print out automatically don’ t print out when there is no paper load ed or a pa per jam has occurred.

Maintenance 8.2 Setting the Machine to be Checked by Phone (Only for SCX-4521F/ SCX-4521FR) The R emote T est feature allows your machine to be checked out by a service com pa n y at a remote place by phone . 1 Press Menu on the control pane l until “Maintenance” appears on the top line of the display .
Maintenance 8.3 5 With a dry lint-free cloth, wip e away any dust and spilled toner from the toner cartridge area and the toner cartridge cavity . C AUTION : Do not touch the black tr ansfer roller insid e the machi ne.
Maintenance 8.4 Redistributing Toner When the toner cartridge is near the end of its life, w hite streaks or light printing occurs. The LCD displa ys the warning message, “[T oner Low]” . Y ou can temporarily reestab lish print quality by re distributing the remaining toner in the cartr idge.
Maintenance 8.5 Cleaning the Drum Y ou can clean the OPC drum of the toner cartridge manually or automatically . If there are streaks or spots on docume nts you print, the OPC drum of the toner cartridge ma y require manual cleaning. 1 Before starting the cleaning procedure, mak e sure that paper is loaded in the machine .
Maintenance 8.6 Replacing the ADF Rubber Pad Y o u can purchase an ADF rubber pad from your Sams ung dealer or the retailer w her e you bought your machine. 1 Open the A DF cover . 2 Re mo ve the ADF rubber pad from the AD F , as shown. 3 Insert a new ADF rubber pad into pla ce.

Troubleshooting 9.2 Exit Misfeed 1 Remo ve any remaining page(s) from the ADF . 2 Open the A DF cover . 3 Remo ve the misfed documents from the document output tray . 4 Close the ADF co ver . Then lo ad the r e mo ved page(s), if any , back into the ADF .
Troubleshooting 9.3 In the Fuser Area or Around the Toner Cartridge N OTE : The fuser area is hot. T ake care when rem oving paper from the machine. 1 Open the fr ont door . 2 Pull the toner cartridge out, lightly pushing it down . 3 If necessary , pull the manual tray out.
Troubleshooting 9.4 3 If there is any resistance and the pa per does not mo ve when you pull, or if you canno t see the paper in the output tray , open the rear cover by pulling the tab on it. 4 Remove the jammed pape r by gentl y pulling it straight out.
Troubleshooting 9.5 Low Heat Error There is a problem in the fuser unit. Unplug the power cord and plug it back in. If the problem persists, please call for service.
Troubleshooting 9.6 Re mo v e Do c u m e n t s from ADF The F avorite Copy button is set to Clone, Autofit, ID Card Copy or P oster and y ou press the button. The Clone, Au tof it, ID Card Copy or Poster feature does not work with ADF . Remov e the documents in the ADF .
Troubleshooting 9.7 Printing Problems Conditi on Possible ca use Suggested soluti ons The machine does not print. The machine is not receiving power . Check the power cord connections. Check the power switch and the power source. The machine is not selected as the default printer .
Troubleshooting 9.8 Pages print, but are blank. The toner c a rtri dge is defective or out o f toner . Redistribute the toner , if necessary . See “R edistributing T oner ” on page 8.4. If necessary , replace the toner cartridge. The file may have blank pages.
Troubleshooting 9.9 Vertical lines If black vertical streaks appear on the page: • The drum inside the toner cartridge has probably been scratched. R emove the toner c artridge and install a new one. See “Replacing the T oner Cartri dge” on page 8.

Troubleshooting 9.13 I can’t print when I installed both Linux Print Pa ckage (LPP) and MFP driver on the same machine simultaneously . • Since both Linux Printer Pa ckage and MFP driver mak e a symbolic link to “lpr” printing comm and, which is commonly used on Unix clones, it is not recommended to use both package on the same machine.

Basic Printing 8 Printing to a file (PRN) Y ou will sometimes nee d to save the print data as a file for yo ur purpose. T o create a file: 1 Check the Print to file box at the Print window. 2 Select the folder and assign a na me of the file and then click OK.
Basic Printing 9 Layout Tab The Layout tab provides options to adjust how the document appears on the printe d pa ge . The Layout Option s includes Multiple Pa ges per Side , Poster Printing and Booklet Printing . See “Print ing a Docume nt” on page 7 for mor e information on accessing printer pr op erties.
Basic Printing 10 Type Set Type to correspond to the paper loaded in the tray from which you want to print. This will let you get the best quality printout. If not, print quality ma y not be acheived as you want. Thick Paper : 24 lb to 28 lb (90~105 g/m 2 ) thick paper .
