Getting Started 6 T ext Conv entions This manual provides condensed informat ion about how to use your device. T o mak e this possible, the following text conventions are used to represent often-used s teps: Batt er y Y our device is powered by a rechargeable, standard Li-Ion batter y .
7 Note: The battery comes partially charged. Y ou must fully charge the battery before using your device for the first time. After the first c harge, you can use the device while charging. 1. Insert the USB cable into the C harging Head (1). 2. Insert th e USB cable i nto the device’ s Charge r/ Accessory Port (2).

Getting Started 10 Make it Google This screen displays if you did not sign into your Google account. The Make it Google screen allo ws you to create a new Google account. Note: If you skipped Wi-Fi setup, the Wi-Fi setup screen displays and you must connect thr ough a Wi-Fi network.

13 Installing a Memor y Card 1. Open the Memory Card Sl ot cover and tu rn to expose the slot. 2. With the gold contacts facing do wn, carefully slide the memory car d into the slot, pushing gently until it clicks into p lace. 3. Replace the Memory Card Slot cover .

Understanding Y our Device 20 Home Screen The Home screen is the starting point for using your device. Note: Unless stated otherwise, instructions in this user manual start with the device unlocked, at the Home scre en.
21 Extended Home Screen The Home screen consists of the Home panel, plus f our panels that extend beyond the d i splay width to pr ovide more space for adding shortcuts and widgets. Slide your finger horizontally across the scree n to scroll to the left or right side panels.

25 R emo ving the S Pen F rom Y our Device The S Pen is conveniently stored in your device to make it easy to find. T o remove the S Pen, follow these steps: 1. Locate the S Pen at the lower right corner of the device.Use your fingernail or a sharp object to pull the end of the S Pen out of the device.

27 Status Details T o display the current date and time, battery status, and Wi-Fi connectivity status, open Status Deta ils. 1. T ap and swipe down the top of the screen to see the Quick Settings, Recommended shortcuts using y our S Pen and any notifications.

Widgets are self-contained app lica tions that you can place on the Home scree ns to access your fa vorite fea tures.

Understanding Y our Device 40 Copying, Deleting, or Replacing T ext T o select and copy , delete, or re place text: 1. T ouch and hold the text or word you want to select. The selected text is highlighted wi th a tab at each end of the selection. 2. T ouch and drag either tab to select more or less text.
41 Using the Handwriting F eature Y ou can enter text simply by using your finger or the S Pen to handwrite letters on your screen. 1. From a screen where you can enter text, activate the keyboard by touching a text input field on the scr een. 2. If necessary , touch Set up input methods in the Status bar and then touch Samsung keyboard .

43 Section 3: Contacts and Accounts This section explains how to manage contac ts and account s. Accounts Y our device can synchronize with a variety of accounts. With synchronization, information on your device is updated with any information that changes in your accounts.

51 Section 4: Messaging This section describes how t o send and receive messa ges and other features associated with messaging. Types of Messa ges Y our device suppor ts these types of messages: • Gmail : Send and receive Gmail fro m your Google account.

Messaging 58 Managing Y our Email Accounts Y ou can view email yo u receive for all accounts in the Combined view screen or you can view email accounts individually . 1. From a Home screen, touch Email . 2. T ouch the drop-down menu at the top left of the screen to select: • Combined view : View all email in a combined inbox.
59 • If you are sending the em ail message to several recipients, separate the email addre sses with a comma. Y ou can add as many message recipie nts as you want. • T ouch to add a contact to the field. • T ouch +Cc/Bcc to add additional carbon copy recipients.
Messaging 60 7. T ouch Save to save the email to the Drafts folder , Send to send the email, or Discard to delete the email. Account Settings Account settings lets you confi gure handling of email on your device.
61 • Always Cc/Bcc myself : Lets you manage whether your email address is included in the C c or Bcc lines. • For ward with files : T ouch the check box to include any file attachments when you forw ard an email. •S h o w i m a g e s : Display images in an email.

63 • Security type : Select the security type re quired by your em ail service pr ovider . Select the SLL (Accept al l certific ates) option for your security type to accept a server certifica te from your SMTP serv er that is self-signe d, out of date, or in som e other way not accepted by the Email application.
Messaging 64 Once sign in is complete, the T alk main screen displays . Invite a F riend to Chat Y ou can invite an yone with a G oogle Account to become your friend in Google T alk, s o yo u can chat with each other and view each other’s online status.

The following o ptions are also displayed: – Block : Keeps this person from sending you messages and removes th e person from your Frien ds list. – Remove : Remove the friend as if you never accepted their invitation.
Messaging 66 Google T alk Settings Use Google T alk Settings to co nfigure you r T alk account. If you have more than one account, each maintains its own T alk settings.

Listening to Music Y ou can listen to music by using your device’ s built-in speakers, through a wired head set, or through a wireless Bluetooth stereo headset.

Photos and Video 84 T aking Photos T o take a photo: 1. From a Home screen, to uch Apps ➔ Camera . 2. Using the display as a viewfinder , compos e your photo by aiming the lens at the subject. T o configure set tings, see “Camera Settings” on page 84.
85 Configuring Camera Setti ngs T o configure Camera settings: While in Camera mode, touch a sett ings shortcut or touch Settings to configure the following camera settings: • Edit shortcuts : Customize your settings sh ortcuts. For more information, refer to “Editing Camera Settings Shortcuts” on page 84.

Use a low er ISO number to make your camera less sens itive to light, a higher ISO number to take photos with less light, or Auto to let the camera automatically adjust the ISO for each of you r shots.
