Starting Android the rst time 7 Star ting Android the rst time When you rst turn on y our tablet, you ha ve the opportunit y to activate y our mobile data ser vice , to sign int o your Google Accoun t, and to decide how y ou want t o use some Google ser vices.

It ’ s a good idea to become familiar with the basics of your tablet and how t o use it—Home and its Home screens , the touchscr een, securing your tablet, monit oring and responding to sta tus and notication messages, and so on.

Home and Android basics 14 Double -tap ● : T ap quick ly twice on a webpage, map , or other screen to zoom. F or example, you double-tap a sec tion of a webpage in Br owser to z oom that section to t the width of the screen. Home and Android basics 18 Managing notications Notications report the arrival of new messages, calendar events , and alarms, as well as ongoing ev ents , such as when you hav e congur ed your tablet as a Wi-F i hotspot.
Home and Android basics 19 Open the Notications list T ouch the time in the System bar . 1 T ouch a notication summar y to respond t o it. 2 Y ou can also touch a notication ’ s Close button to remov e it from the Notications list, or t ouch elsewhere on the screen to close the list.
Home and Android basics 20 Status Details and Quick Settings Y ou can get more details about the curren t date and time , networking, and battery status in with the Status Details. Y ou can also open the Quick Settings to view and control the most c ommon settings for y our tablet, as well as ac cessing the complete Settings application.
Home and Android basics 21 W ork with Quick S ettings The Quick Settings make it conv enient to view or change the most c ommon tablet settings and to open the full Settings app. Open the Status Details. 1 T ouch anywhere in the Status Details . 2 The Quick Settings open below the Status Details, r eplacing the list of current notica tions.
Home and Android basics 22 The Quick Settings are: Fligh t mode ● : Drag the switch to ON t o turn o all the tablet ’ s radios that transmit data, including mobile da ta and W i- F i. See “ Wireless & Network settings scree n ” on page 91 .
Home and Android basics 23 Secure your lock scr een T ouch the time in the System bar , touch the time in the Status Details panel, and touch 1 Settings at the bottom of the Quick Settings. Y ou can also open Settings by touching its icon in the Apps scr een or on a Home screen (if y ou placed a shortcut to it there).
Home and Android basics 24 Encr ypt y our tablet Y ou can encr ypt all the data on your tablet: Google A ccounts , application data, music and other media, do wnloaded information, and so on. If you do , you must enter a numeric PIN or password each time y ou pow er on your tablet.
Home and Android basics 25 Enter y our lock screen PIN or passw ord and touch 4 Con tinue . T ouch the 5 Encrypt tablet button again, to conrm you want t o continue . The encryption process star ts and displays its pr ogress . Encr yption can take an hour or more , during which time your tablet may r estart several times.

Some widgets are standalone applications , some open a relat ed application when you t ouch them, and others provide a subset of useful inf ormation or con trols f or their relat ed applications.
Home and Android basics 29 Optimizing battery life Y ou can extend your battery ’ s life between charges by turning o fea tures that y ou don ’t need. Y ou can also monitor how apps and system r esourc es consume batt er y power . Extend the life of your ba ttery T urn o radios that you aren ’t using.
Home and Android basics 30 Check the battery charge lev el Open the Settings app and touch About tablet → S tatus . The battery status (charging , discharging) and lev el (as a perc entage of fully charged) ar e display ed at the top of the screen.
Working with apps 31 W ork ing with apps Y ou can open and switch among numerous apps: Andr oid manages your tablet’ s resourc es for y ou so you don ’t need to quit one to get the most out of another one. Y ou can learn about how your apps memor y .
Working with apps 32 Open the Apps screen In Home, touch the Apps butt on (at the top right). If you have mor e apps than can t on the Apps scr een, you can slide the scr een left or right to view more.
Working with apps 33 Managing how apps use memor y As described in “Opening and switching app s ” on page 31 , you typically don ’t need to worry about managing apps beyond installing , opening , and using them. The operating system manages ho w they use memor y and other resourc es automatically .
Working with apps 34 Y ou manage how apps use stor age memor y directly and indirectly in many w ays as y ou use your tablet , for e xample, b y : Installing or uninstalling apps (see “ ● Marke t .
Working with apps 35 T ouch the ● Active tab to view the apps and their pr ocesses and services that are running or cached . See “Stop a misbehaving ap p ” on page 36 . When viewing the ● Downloaded or All tab , touch the By Size icon or the Alphabetical ic on to switch the or der of the list.
Working with apps 36 Y ou can delete an app ’ s settings and other data by touching the ● Clear data button. Cache ● : If the app stores data in a tempor ar y area of the tablet’ s memor y , lists how much inf ormation is stored , and includes a button for clearing it.
Working with apps 37 Uninstall an app Y ou can uninstall apps you downloaded fr om Market and other sources . ( Y ou can also use Mar ket to uninstall apps you downloaded from ther e; see “Managing download s ” on page 37) Open the Manage Applications screen.

Entering and editing text 39 Ent ering and editing te xt Y ou can use the onscreen keyboar d to enter t ext in web pages, when composing mail , and an yplace else with a text eld, or y ou can enter text by speaking instead of typing. Y ou can also edit text: inser t, delete, c opy , and even paste between applicators .
Entering and editing text 40 Enter te xt by typing T ouch a text eld to open the keyboard. The onscreen keyboar d opens. T ouch space or a punctuation mark to enter Android’ s best guess at the word you mean t o enter . T ouch the Shift key once to capitalize the next letter you type.
Entering and editing text 41 T ouch a suggestion to enter it in place of the underlined w ord in the te xt eld. T ouch the keys on the keyboard to en ter text. ● As you type, w ords tha t the keyboard has suggestions f or are underlined . If you set the keyboard to sho w correction suggestions, they appear in a strip abov e the keyboard .
Entering and editing text 42 T ouch space or a punctuation mark to enter a suggested w ord in place of the underlined w ord . ● If you mistype a word that the keyboar d rec ognizes , it corrects it automatically (unless y ou turn that fea ture o ).
Entering and editing text 43 Change the input language If you ’ve used the Input Method settings to make more than one language or input method a vailable , the Input Method button appears in the Syst em bar when the onscreen keyboar d, v oice input panel, or other input method is open.
Entering and editing text 44 When prompt ed to “Speak now , ” speak what you want to ent er . 3 Say “ comma, ” “period , ” “ question mar k, ” “ exclamation mark, ” or “ exclamation point” to enter punctuation. T ext that you enter by speaking is underlined.
Entering and editing text 45 Editing te xt Y ou can edit the text you enter in t ext elds and cut, copy , or paste text, within or across apps. Some apps don ’t suppor t editing some or all of the text they display ; others may o er their own wa y to select text you want to w ork with.
Entering and editing text 46 Selec t text Y ou select text that you want to cut, c opy , delete, or replac e. T ouch & hold the text or word y ou want to select. 1 The selected text is highlighted, with a tab a t each end of the selection. Drag a selection tab to expand or reduce the r ange of selected text.
Entering and editing text 47 Use the tools in the Application bar t o cut, cop y , or paste to replace the selected text. 3 Y ou can also simply enter text by typing or speaking, to replac e the selection with what you type, or touch the Delete key to deleted the selected text.
Connecting to networks and devices 48 C onnecting to net w orks and devic es Y our tablet can connect to a variety of networks and devices, including mobile networks for data tr ansmission, Wi-F i data networks, and Bluetooth devic es, such as headsets .
Connecting to networks and devices 49 Network status icons turn blue if you ha ve a Google Ac count added t o your tablet and the tablet is connected to Google ser vices, f or syncing your Google Mail, C alendar events , contacts, f or backing up your settings, and so on.
Connecting to networks and devices 50 Limit your da ta connection to slow er netw orks If your tablet connects to GSM mobile networks, you can e xtend your battery life by limiting your da ta connections to slower , 2G networks (GPRS or EDGE).
Connecting to networks and devices 51 C onnecting to Wi-F i net w orks Wi-F i is a wireless network ing technology that can pr ovide Internet access at distanc es of up to 100 meters , depending on the W i-F i router and your surroundings . T o use W i-F i on y our tablet, you c onnect to a wireless access poin t, or “hotspot.
Connecting to networks and devices 52 T urn W i-F i on and c onnect to a W i-Fi networ k If you ’ re adding a W i-F i network when rst setting up y our tablet, Wi-F i is turned on automatically , so you can skip to step 4. Open the Settings app. 1 See “Opening Setting s ” on page 90 .

Connecting to networks and devices 57 Change y our tablet’ s Bluetooth name Y our tablet has a generic Bluetooth name by default, which is visible to other devic es when you c onnect them. Y ou can change the name so that it is more r ecognizable . Open the Settings application.
Connecting to networks and devices 58 If the device you want t o pair with isn ’ t in the list, ensure tha t the other device is turned on and set to be 4 discov erable . See the documentation that came with your devic e to learn how to make it disc ov erable by y our tablet, and for other instructions for pairing.

In the list of devices, touch a pair ed but unconnected device in the list. 4 If the device you expected isn ’ t display ed, t ouch Scan for devices . When the tablet and the device ar e connected, the device is displa yed as c onnected in the list.

Settings 96 Screen settings Use the Screen settings to c ongure brightness and other scr een settings. Brightness ● : Opens a dialog for adjusting the brightness of the scr een. Y ou can check Automa tic brightness to set the tablet to adjust the brightness automatically , using the tablet ’ s built-in light sensor .
Settings 97 Enable GPS ● : Check to use your tablet’ s global positioning system (GPS) sat ellite r eceiver t o pinpoint your loca tion to within an accuracy as close as several meters (“ street level”). Actual GPS accuracy depends on a clear view of the sky and other factors.
Settings 98 Use secur e credentials ● : Check to allow applications t o access y our tablet’ s encr ypted stor e of secure certicates and relat ed passwor ds and other credentials . Y ou use credential stor age to establish some kinds of VPN and Wi-F i connections, as described in “Connecting to networks and device s ” on page 48 .
Settings 99 Battery use ● : Opens a list of the applications that hav e used battery power since y ou last charged y our tablet. See “ Optimizing batt er y lif e ” on page 29. Y ou also use these settings to contr ol how and whether applications send , rec eive , and sync data on their own schedules , and whether applications can synchroniz e user data automatically .
Settings 101 Priv acy settings Y ou use the Privacy settings to manage whether your settings and other data ar e backed up to Google servers, using your Google accoun t. Y ou also use these settings to erase all the data on your tablet b y per forming a factor y data reset.
Settings 102 Stor age settings Use the Stor age settings to monitor the used and a vailable space on y our tablet ’ s internal storage . Y ou can also view and manage the storage used by applica tions; see “Managing how apps use memor y ” on page 33.
