Getting Started 6 T ext Conv entions This manual provides condensed informa tion about how to use your device. T o mak e this possible, the following text conventions are used to represent often-used s teps: Batt er y Y our device is powered by a rechargeable, standard Li-Ion batter y .
7 Note: The battery comes partially charged. Y ou must fully charge the battery before using your device for the first time. After the first charge, you can use the device while charging. 1. Carefully slide the Outlet Conne ctor into the Charging Head (1), making sure th e connection is secure.

T ouch Next . Use Google Location 1. Read the informatio n on the screen and enable either or both of the Google locatio n services.
11 Using Google Maps In order to use some ap plications rela ted to Google Maps, you must first conne ct Wi-Fi. F or more information, refer to “Wi-Fi” on page 15 8. Y ou must als o enable location servi ces to use Google Maps. Some features require Standa lone or Google loca tion services.
Getting Started 12 T ask Manager A pplication The T ask Manager application provides informa tion about applicat ions, including Active applicatio ns , Downloaded , RAM manager , Storage , and Help . To a c c e s s t h e Ta s k M a n a g e r : 1. Access T ask Manager from the T ask mana ger pop-up.
13 Installing a Memor y Card 1. Open the Memory Card Sl ot cover and tu rn to expose the slot. 2. With the gold contacts facing do wn, carefully slide the memory ca rd into the slot (1), pushing gently until it clicks into place (2). 3. Replace the Memory Card Slot cover .
Getting Started 14 4. Gently press down on the mem ory card (1), so that it pops out from the slot, and carefully pull the card out (2) . 5. Replace the Memory Card Slot cover . 19 Side Views The following items can be fo und on the sides of your device. 1. Memory Card Slot : Install a memor y card for stora ge of files. 2. Pow er/Lock Key : Press and hold to turn th e device on or off. Press to lock the device or to wake the scr een for unlocking.

21 Home Screen The Home screen is the starting point for using your device. Note: Unless stated otherwis e, instru ctions in this use r manual start with the device unlocked, at the Home s creen. 1. Google Searc h : Search your tablet and the web by typing or speaking.

23 Extended Home Screen The Home screen consists of the Home panel, plus f our panels that extend beyond the d i splay width to pr ovide more space for adding shortcuts and widgets. Slide your finger horizontally across the screen to scrol l to the left or right side panels.

The following table lists those icons. Status Bar The Status Bar displays icons to sho w network status, battery power , and other details.

Th ey can al so appear on the Home screens to the left an d right of the center Hom e screen. Widgets are self-contained app lica tions that you can place on the Home scree ns to access your fa vorite feature s.
31 Widget Options The fol lowing widgets ar e available. • AccuWeather .com : Display the forecast from Accu Weather . T ouch the widget to choose locations. • Analog clo ck : Display an analog clock. T ouch the widget to view alarms or add a new alarm.

37 Applica tion Infor mation T o view informa tion about an App, such as the amount of storage it uses, for ce the App to stop, uninstall upda tes, and cle ar d at a : 1. From a Home screen, touch Apps . 2. T ouch and hold an App icon, then drag it to Information to open a screen with details about the App.

39 Market : Browse, do wnload, and install Android applications. A shortcut to Mar ket displays on a Home screen by default. For more in formation, refer to “Market / Play Store” on page 140. Note: After initial access to Market, the Google Play™ Store icon displays.

Entering T ext 42 Section 3: Entering T ext This section describes ho w to enter words, letter s, punctuation and numbers when you need to enter text. Samsung K eyboar d Y our device uses a virtual QWERTY keyb oard for text entry called the Samsung keyboard .
43 Using the Samsung K eyboar d The Samsung keyboard is a cust om virtual QWERTY keyboard, featuring predictive text. Input ch aracters by touching the on-screen keys with your finger or use speech recognition. As you enter characters, predic tive text matches your key touches to common words and di splay s them.
Entering T ext 44 Entering Symbols and Numbers The number keys are displayed a t the top of the keyboard and are always a vailable. T o enter common symbols , touch to switch to Symbols mode, then touch the corresponding key . There are three pages of s ymbols.
45 6. Begin typing a word. A list of word options di splays. 7. T ouch to display m ore words. T o add more words, see “Adding Words T o Y our Word List” on page 45. 8. Continue typing your messag e. XT9 mode can be used in portrait or landscap e mode.
Entering T ext 46 Editing Existing Te xt T o edit text that you ha ve entered: 1. T ouch the text at the point you want to edit. The Cursor displays at the point you touched. 2. T ouch and drag the Cursor to a better position, if necessary . 3. Enter additional t ext or delete text by repeatedly touching the Delete key .
47 Pasting T ext T o paste previo usly copied text where the Cursor is positioned: 1. T ouch the text at the point you want to paste the copied text. The Cursor displays at the point you touched. 2. T ouch and hold the Cursor and touch Pas t e in the pop-up.
Contacts and Accoun ts 48 Section 4: Contacts an d Accounts This section explains how to manage contacts and accounts. Accounts Y our device can synchronize with a variety of accounts. With synchronization, in formation on your device is updated with any informa tion that changes in your accounts.
49 Contacts Store contact information for your friends, family , and colleagues to quickly access information or to send a message. T o access Contacts: From a Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Contacts . Creating Contacts 1. From a Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Contacts ➔ .
Contacts and Accoun ts 50 • Groups : T ouch this field to display the Select group screen. T o assign the contact to one or more groups, touch the check box next to each group. Whe n enabled, a check mark appears in the check b ox. For more information about Group s, see “Groups” on page 55.
51 Managing Photo IDs T o remove or upda te a contact’ s Photo ID: 1. From a Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Contacts . 2. T ouch Menu ➔ Edit . 3. T ouch the Photo ID, then touch Remov e , Picture , or Ta k e picture . Contacts Display Options There are various ways to display your Contact s and general Contacts settings.

53 •S e n d e m a i l : T o send an email to one or more members of the group, touch and check mark the box next to each contact yo u want to send to and touch . T ouch Compose Gmail or Compose Email as the method for send ing the email. • Change order : Changes the order o f how the groups display .
Contacts and Accoun ts 54 Sharing Contact Information Y ou can send a contact’ s information by way of Bluetooth to other Bluetooth devices or in an Emai l or Gmail as an atta chme nt. Note: Not all Bluetooth de vices a ccept contacts and not all devices support transfers of multiple contacts.
55 4. T ouch Import from US B storage , Import from S D card , Export to USB storage , Export to SD c ard , or Send namecard via , then follow the prompts to complete the operation. Groups Assign contacts to Groups to make searching for contacts faster or to quickly send messages to group members.

Messaging 58 Section 5: Messaging This section describes ho w to send and receive messa ges and other features as sociated with messaging. Types of Messages Y our device supports these types of messages: • Gmail : Send and receive Gmail from your Google account.

Messaging 60 Managing Y our Gmail Conv ersations In addition to managing your Gma il account, there are options for changing the status of one or more Gmail conversations in an account.
61 Composing and Sending Gmail 1. From a Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Gmail . 2. To u c h Compos e . 3. T ouch the To field to enter re cipients. As you enter names or email addresses, ma tching contacts display . T ouch a contact to add it to the field.
Messaging 62 • Ask to show pictures : Restores the default setting (d o not show pict ures auto matic ally) f or all t he people w ho send y ou email, including th ose whose Show pictures setting you may have changed when re ading messages from them.
63 Email Use Email to view and manage all your email accounts in one application. Configuring Email Accounts 1. From a Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Email .
Messaging 64 • Sync calendar : When enabled, even ts from your account are synchronized with your de vice’ s Calendar . • Automatically d ownload atta chments when connected to Wi-Fi : Enable or disable auto-do wnload of files attached to recent messages when conne cted through Wi-Fi.
65 Managing Y our Email Conv ersations In addition to managing yo ur Email account, there are options for changing the sta tus of one or more Email conversations in an account.
Messaging 66 • T ouch +Me to add yourself as a recipient. • T ouch +Cc/Bcc to add add itional ca rbon copy r ecipien ts. – Use the Cc field to carbon copy additional recipients. – Use the Bcc field to blind copy additional r ecipients. 4. T ouch the Subject field to enter a sub ject.
67 7. T ouch Send to send the message or touch Save to save the email to the Drafts folder . Account Settings Account settings lets you conf ig ure handling of email on your device.
Messaging 68 Data usage • Email check frequency : Set how often to check for new em ail sent to this account during. Options are: Never , ever y 5, 10, 15, or 30 minutes, every hour , every 4 hours, or once a day .
69 • Sync email : When enabled, ema il from your account is synchronized with your device’ s email. • Sync contacts : When enab led, cont acts from your accou nt are synchronized with your device’ s Contacts. • Sync calendar : When enabled, ev ents from your account are synchronized with your device’ s Calendar .

Select the SLL (Accept all certifi cates) option for your security type to accept a server certificat e from your SM T P s er ve r t h a t i s s e lf - si g ne d, o ut of d a te , or in s om e ot he r wa y not accepted by the Email applicat ion.
71 Note: If you have alread y set up your Google acco unt, you are automaticall y logged in. Just touch the account. Once sign in is complete, the T alk m ain screen displays.
Messaging 72 Options While Ch atting There are several options tha t are available while you are chatting. 1. T ouch to search your chats for a word, to invite another friend to chat, to invit e this friend to video chat, or to invite this friend to voice chat.
73 • Send feedback : Fill out a Google feedba ck fo rm. 3. T ouch a Friend’ s entr y to display the Chat ent ries for that Friend. Google T alk Settings Use Google T al k Settings to configure your T alk account. If you have more than one account , each maintains its own T alk se ttings.
Messaging 74 ACCOUNT • Blocked friends : Displays a list of friends yo u have blocked. T ouch a blocked friend and then touch OK to unblock the frien d. • Clear search history : Erases your sear ch histor y . No previous searches are shown u ntil you search for new words.

Options are: Ne ver , Only via Wi-Fi, or Always. •L o a d i m a g e s : When enabled , images are automatically loaded when you visit a p age.
85 Latitude With Google Latitude, you can s ee the location of all of your friends on a map or on a list. Y ou can also share or hide your location. Y ou must first se t up your tablet to use wirel ess networks to help pinpoint your location. Also, L atitude works best when Wi-Fi is enabled.

T ouch the HOME tab to return to th e main Y o uT ube page. 3. T ouch the BROWSE tab to browse videos by ca tegories like Comedy , Education, Music, and so on.
93 Section 7: Music This section explains how to us e the music features of your device including the Music ap p, the Music player , and the Music Hub. Music A pp The Music app contains a music player that plays music and other audio files th at you copy from yo ur computer or store onli ne.

95 • Hide now playing bar / Show now playing bar : Hide or sh ow the Now Playing bar that displays at the b ottom of the screen. Y ou can return to the Now playing screen fr om other Music screens by touching the nam e of the current song in the Now Playing bar .
