Assembling 13 Charge the ba tter y Y our device has a built-in battery . Befor e using the device for the first time or when the batt er y has been unused for an extended period, you must char ge the batter y . Use only Samsung-appro ved chargers . Unauthorised chargers can cause batteries t o explode or damage your device.
Assembling 14 Connecting the USB cable improperly may cause serious damage to the device or USB pow er adapter . Any damage caused b y misuse is not cov ered by the warrant y . Plug the USB pow er adapter into a pow er outlet. 2 Y ou can use the device while it is charging , but it may ● take longer to fully charge the batt er y .
Assembling 15 T o save energy , unplug the USB power adapter when not in use. The USB power adapt er does not have a power swit ch, so you must unplug the USB pow er adapter from the electrical socket when not in use to avoid w asting power . The device should r emain close to the electrical socket while charging.
Assembling 16 Open the cov er of the memor y card slot. 1 Inser t a memor y card with the gold- coloured contacts 2 facing down. Push the memory card in the memor y card slot until it 3 locks in place. Close the memor y card cov er . 4 Remov e the memor y card › Before r emoving a memory card, first unmount it f or safe remov al.
Assembling 17 F ormat the memory card › F ormatting your memory card on a PC may cause incompatibilities with y our device. F or mat the memor y card only on the device. Open the application list and select Settings → S tor age → F ormat SD card → F ormat SD card → Er ase ev er ything .

If you turn on your device f or the first time, f ollow the on-screen instructions to set up your device . T o turn off your device, pr ess and hold the P ower key and select Po wer off → OK .

23 Getting star ted Use the S P en and the touch screen Y our device ’ s touch screen lets you easily select items or per form functions. Learn basic actions for using the touch screen. Do not press the touch scr een with your fingertips, ● or use sharp tools on the touch screen.
24 Getting star ted Contr ol your touch scr een with the following actions: T ap: T ouch once with your finger or the supplied S P en to ● select or launch a menu, option, or application. T ap and hold: T ap an item and hold it for more than ● 2 seconds to open a list of options .
25 Getting star ted Get to know the Home screen When the device is in Idle mode , you will see the Home screen. F r om the Home screen, you can view indicat or icons, widgets, shortcuts to applications, and other it ems. Scroll left or right to a panel of the Home screen.
26 Getting star ted Sy stem bar F rom the syst em bar , you can quickly navigate screens , access applications, view sy stem information, and mor e. Number F unction 1 Capture the curr ent screen; Captur e the current scr een and open the drawing pad (tap and hold).
27 Getting star ted Add a widget on the Home scr een › Widgets ar e small applications that pro vide conv enient functions and information on your Home scr een. The widgets available ma y var y depending on your region or service provider . Open the application list and select 1 W idgets to open the widget panel.
28 Getting star ted Add or r emov e a panel from the Home scr een › Y ou can add or remov e Home screen panels to or ganise widgets. On the Home screen, place two fingers on the scr een and 1 pinch them together to switch t o Edit mode. Add , remov e, or reor ganise panels: 2 T o add a new panel, select ● .
29 Getting star ted T o display two differ ent Multi W indow applications side ● by side in full screen, select Dual view . Y ou can switch the positions of the two applications by tapping and holding an application ’ s title bar , and then dragging it on the other application.
30 Getting star ted Use the notifica tions panel › F rom the Home scr een or while using an application, select the right side of the system bar , and then selec t an option on the notifications panel. 32 Getting star ted C ustomise y our device Get more from y our device by customising it t o match your pref erences . Change the language of the display › Open the application list and select 1 Settings → Language and input → Language . Select a language you want.
33 Getting star ted Swit ch to Silent mode › T o mute or unmute your device , do one of the follo wing: Open the notifications panel at the right side of the syst em ● bar and select S ound . Pr ess and hold the P ower key , and then select ● . Selec t a wallpaper for the Home scr een › T ap and hold anywhere on the Home Screen.
34 Getting star ted Adjust the brigh tness of the display › Y our device includes a light sensor , which can detect the level of ambient light and adjust the brightness of the displa y automatically . Y ou can also manually set the brightness of the display .
35 Getting star ted › Set a screen lock Y ou can lock your device by activating the scr een lock featur e. Once you set a scr een lock, your device will requir e ● an unlock code each time you turn it on or unlock the touch screen. If you for get your PIN or passwor d, bring your devic e ● to a Samsung Ser vice Centr e to reset it.
36 Getting star ted Set a face and v oice rec ognition unlock Open the application list and select 1 Settings → L o ck screen → Screen lock → F ace and v oice . Select 2 Nex t → Set it up → C ontinue . Adjust the device t o fit your face inside the figur e.
37 Getting star ted Set an unlock pattern Open the application list and select 1 Settings → L o ck screen → Screen lock → P att ern . See the on-screen instructions and example patterns and 2 select N ex t . Draw a patt ern by dragging y our finger to connect at least 3 4 dots and select Continue .
38 Getting star ted Enter t ext Y ou can enter text by selecting characters on the vir tual keypad, inputting handwriting on the screen, or speaking wor ds into the microphone . Y ou cannot enter text in some languages. T o enter text, you should change the writing language to one of the suppor ted languages.
39 Getting star ted Number F unction 3 Acc ess the keypad settings. T ap and hold to switch to Handwriting mode , enter text by voice . 4 Clear your input.

Using special features 41 Learn adv anced S P en ac tions With the S P en, you can also per form the following advanc ed actions. Back While pressing the S P en button, draw to return to the previous screen. Menu While pressing the S P en button, draw to open a list of options available on the curren t screen.

Using special features 43 Learn motions Built-in motion rec ognition provides y ou with enhanced contr ols. Y ou can per form actions by moving your devic e or per forming gestures with your hands . T o use some of these func tions, you must first activate the motion recog nition featur e.
Using special features 44 Pa n › T ap and hold an item on the screen, and then pan the device to the left or right to move the it em to another page on the home screen or application list. When an image is zoomed in, slide the device in any dir ection to scroll through the image .
Using special features 45 Handwriting T utorial › When you ha ve written one character , write the next one. ● Write each lett er to the right of the previous character . I f you dra w a stroke on top of a pr evious character , it may be recog nised as a new character .
Using special features 46 Most of the languages can recognise not only individual ● characters but characters written together that make up wor ds. ( This is ref erred to as supporting words and phrases.) The languages that do and do not support words and phrase should be listed in this guide .

Using special features 55 Synchr onise notes › Y ou can synchronise your not es with the web ser ver . Open the application list and select 1 S Note . Select 2 → S ync → an option. Select notes to sync, and then select 3 Sync . T o synchronise all notes, select Sync all .
Using special features 56 Use the quick not e pad F rom an y screen, you can cr eate a quick note of t ext and sketches. While pressing the S P en button, double -tap the screen to 1 open the quick note pad.
Using special features 57 Use S Planner Y our device provides y ou with a powerful planner to help you organise your schedules and tasks mor e con veniently and effectively . Y ou can creat e and view events , add items, and change view modes. T o launch S Planner , open the application list and selec t S Planner .

Using special features 61 S P en Air View When you hold the S P en near the screen, a pointer appears on the screen. Mov e the pointer to files , subjects, or options to preview the c ontents or view inf ormation in pop-up windows . Y ou can scroll through panels or lists b y moving the pointer to an edge (top/bottom/left/right) of the screen.

Web 65 Open multiple pages › Y ou can open multiple pages and switch back and forth between them. Open the application list and select 1 Internet . Select 2 to open a new tab . Acc ess another web page on the new tab . 3 T o switch back and forth bet ween currently open tabs , 4 select the title of a tab.
Web 66 T o edit the book mark , select ● Edit bookmark . T o add the book mark shor tcut to the Home screen, select ● Add shortcut . T o send the web address of the w eb page to others, select ● Share link . T o copy the web addr ess of the web page, select ● C o p y li nk URL .

Web 69 Upload videos › Open the application list and select 1 Y ou T ube . Select 2 → Sign in , and then select your Google accoun t if it is linked to Y ouT ube. Y ou can also select Add acc ount and set up an account t o sign in Y ouT ube. Select 3 , and then select a video.
Web 70 Search for a specific loca tion › Open the application list and select 1 Maps . The map will display y our current location. Select 2 . Enter a keyword f or the location. 3 T o search for a location b y voice , select . Select the location you want to view details .
Web 71 Get directions to a specific destination › Open the application list and select 1 Maps . Select 2 . Enter the addr esses of the star ting location and the 3 ending location. T o enter an address fr om your contact list or starred places, or poin t the location on the map , select → an option.
Web 72 Local Learn to sear ch for a place ar ound you . This f eature may be una vailable depending on your region or service provider . Open the application list and select 1 Loc al . Communication 76 C ommunica tion Google Mail Y ou can retrieve new email messages fr om Google Mail ™ to your Inbo x. When you ac cess this application, the Inbox screen appears . The t otal number of unread messages displays in the title bar and unr ead messages display in bold.
Communication 77 V iew an email message › Open the application list and select 1 Google Mail . Select 2 to update the message list. Select an email message. 3 F rom the message view , use the following options: T o create a new message , select ● .
Communication 78 Email Learn to send or view email messages via y our personal or company email ac count. Set up an email accoun t › 1 Open the application list and select Email . Enter y our email address and passwor d. 2 Select 3 Nex t (for general email acc ounts) or Manual setup (for other compan y email accoun ts).
Communication 79 Select 5 → files to attach. Select 6 to send the message. T o send the message at a specified time and date, select . If you are offline or outside y our ser vice area, the message will be held in the outbox until y ou are online and in your service area.
Communication 80 T o make the message as unread, select ● → Mark as unread . T o move the message to another f older , select ● → Move . T o save the message , select ● → Sav e email . The message will be saved in My F iles → sdcard0 → Sav ed Email .
Communication 81 Add friends t o your friend list › Open the application list and select 1 T alk → . Enter an email addr ess of the friend and selec t 2 DONE . When your friend acc epts the invitation, the friend is added to your friend list. Star t a chat › Open the application list and select 1 T alk .
Communication 82 Messenger Learn to send and r eceive instan t messages to friends and family with the Google+ messenger instant messaging ser vice. Open the application list and select 1 Messenger . If you are launching this application f or the first time, follo w the on-screen instructions to complete the account setup .
83 Entertainment Ent er tainment Music Play er Learn to list en to your fa vourite music while on the go with the music player . The music pla yer suppor ts the follo wing file formats: mp3, aac , ogg, wma, flac , m4a .
84 Entertainment Play music › After transf erring music files to your device or memory card, Open the application list and select 1 Music Play er . Select a music categor y 2 → a music file. T ap the music player field. 3 Contr ol playback with the virtual keys.
85 Entertainment Crea te a playlist › Open the application list and select 1 Music Play er . Select 2 → Ne w playlist . Enter a title f or your new playlist and select 3 OK . T o add music files to the playlist, select 4 next to the music files. T o delete music files from the playlist, select next to the music files.
86 Entertainment Music Hub Y ou can access the online music stor e, and search f or and buy your fav ourite songs. Y ou can also add a music file to your wish list and play downloaded music files . This f eature may be una vailable depending on your region or service provider .

The photo is sa ved automatically . After taking photos, select the image viewer to view the captured photos .

Each time you lock the screen while playing a DivX Video- On-Demand, one of your available r ental counts will be decr emented.

Enter a name and select 3 OK . Select a folder in the left panel, and then selec t image to 4 move or c opy in the right panel.
102 Entertainment Select a recognised face 4 → A dd name . Select the person’ s name from the c ontact list. 5 The contact is linked to the face in the image . When the face tag appears with a name , select the face tag and use the available options .
103 Entertainment P aper Ar tist Learn to make images look like illustr ations with fun effects or frames. Open the applica tion list and select Paper Artist . The edited image will be sa ved in ● Galler y → P aper Pictures . This f eature may be una vailable depending on your ● region or service provider .
104 Entertainment Select 6 → a transition effect option. When you ar e finished, select 7 → Export . Select a resolution option. 8 Enter a name f or the video and select 9 OK . T rim a segment of a video › Open the application list and select 1 V ideo Editor .
105 Entertainment Apply an eff ec t to a video › Open the application list and select 1 V ideo Editor . T ap an item to edit in the timeline. 2 Select 3 V isual effects → an effect option. Select 4 → Save . Add a caption t o a video › Open the application list and select 1 V ideo Editor .
106 Entertainment Inser t a sound effec t to a video › Open the application list and select 1 V ideo Editor . Drag the thumbnail to place in the black dott ed line at the 2 desired point. Select 3 Sound effects → a sound option. Select 4 → Save .
